What would you do if you were trapped underground with a bunch of religious fanatics who are all waiting for the world to end?

16 year-olds Gwen and Isaiah thought they had finally uncovered the truth about the world-wide conspiracy to manufacture the rapture when they discovered where all the missing people were hiding. But then they became trapped there themselves! They must use their wits to navigate this strange new place and figure out who their real allies are if they are ever going to find a way out. Meanwhile, their friend Mindy is on the outside looking for them as she begins questioning why the infamous Reverend Haymouth has suddenly shown an interest in her and whether her devotion to the True Believer Temple may have been misplaced all along.

An Excerpt from The Sainted:

"Mindy, what do you know about this Isaiah guy?" Mrs. Byron said. "I'd never even heard of him until today."

"I…" I hesitated to verbalize my thoughts. Logically, Isaiah was the only person capable of orchestrating Gwen's disappearance that way, but my gut told me he couldn't have. I didn't know him very well, but I couldn't imagine him purposely doing something that weird. Maybe he'd try to convince Gwen the rapture hadn't happened, but he wouldn't make her go missing. "I don't know him that well, but I know Gwen has had a crush on him this past school year and they just began hanging out more recently. I mean, I don't know who else she showed the emails from Lana's email address to, but he was the only person who believed them."

"Did Lana hang out with him too?" Officer Mulligan asked. "No, not that I ever heard of. Like I said, Gwen and Isaiah really began hanging out more recently. Like pretty much right after the rapture happened. Before that, they would just talk sometimes in Gwen's government class."

"Isaiah's parents were just as surprised as you about him not coming back home. They, however, noticed their son was missing yesterday, and if we'd had the information from Mindy earlier, it might have been possible for us to connect the dots and figure out what they were up to earlier on." Officer Mulligan looked at his watch. "As it is, they have been gone for almost forty-eight hours. That's a really long time, and they could be just about anywhere now."

"I know. I wish more than anything we had figured this out earlier," Mr. Byron said. "We would give anything to have her safely back home right now."

My Review of The Sainted:

When people started disappearing all over the world and people were calling it the rapture Gwen and Isaiah didn’t quite believe it as they were too many good people left behind for it to be the rapture. When Gwen receives an email from her friend Lana who is among the departed she really starts to investigate the disappearance of so many people.

Gwen and Isaiah finally find her friend Lana and discover that Lana with thousands more have been taken to underground compounds where they are waiting on the real rapture. Gwen may have found her friend but now she is trapped in the compound with everyone else. They can’t let her go because then she would tell everyone that the rapture was a hoax and they can’t have that.

But Gwen and Isaiah have no intentions of staying in the compound for the rest of their lives and start right away trying to find a way to escape. But with so many people keeping their eye on them and keeping them separate from each other may be harder than they think. They hope that they can enlist the help of their new friends in helping them to escape. That is if they can find anyone inside who wants to leave that is.

Can they make the people in the compound see the truth about the rapture being a fake? Can they find anyone who will help them? Is there anyone in the compound who wants out as well? Will they ever be able to escape their life of imprisonment? Will they ever see the outside world again? Will they ever see their parents again? Are they doomed to living a life underground without sunshine or trees?

If you like a good dystopian novel then The Sainted is the book for you and I would highly recommend it but I would suggest that you read book one The Departed first so that you will know and understand what is happening. I have truly and dearly loved reading both books The Departed and The Sainted and can’t wait for the next book in the series.

The Departed: Book 1 of The Departed Series

My Review of The Departed

An Interview with Kristy Cooper

1) What inspires you to write?

I've always had many random story ideas that I felt I needed to do something with. I had this idea, that someday, I would finally get around to sitting down and writing the stories that were growing in my head, but I just kept postponing that day. I think this is such a common problem for a lot of people who would like to write. I finally had a little time on my hands, so I began working on The Departed and as I began writing it, I realized it had so many more details and layers that it should be a series. I have a few other YA science fiction series ideas, that I hope I get a chance to work on after this one is done.

2) What is the hardest thing about being a writer?

I think the hardest thing about being a writer is wishing you could write faster. I keep reading about writers who regularly write 10,000 words a day and I am so jealous! Although I am slowly getting a little faster, I usually end up averaging about 500-2000 words a day.

Related to that issue, is the also wishing I could read faster problem. The more I write, the less time I have to read and vice versa!

3) What do you do when you get writers block?

Most of my experience with writers block has been about particular details in my stories. I haven't really experienced it yet in terms of larger story arc issues. I tend to deal with these blocks by just typing some gibberish and highlighting it in red, so there is no way I will not forget to go back and edit it later. If I am feeling stuck on a small part, I think it's better to just keep writing and go back to whatever the problem is at a later time, otherwise it will completely interrupt your flow.

Sometimes I just can't come up with character names when I am introducing them. While I was working on The Sainted (Book 2 of The Departed Series), I had an Officer Butt and a Mrs. Whatever (really mature I know). They got "real" names later when I went back to edit.

4) What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Make yourself write everyday by setting a mini-habit. I made my goal to only write 50 words a day which I know isn't very much. But it's also a very attainable goal even if you have an otherwise busy and full day. When your WIP is in front of you, you will almost always write much more than just 50 words.

5) Do you have a street team or an email readers can subscribe to receive updates on upcoming releases, etc?

I do! You can sign-up to get an early review copy of my next book The Sainted at: kristycooper.com/blogger.

Book 3 in the Death by Cupcake series. Can be read as a standalone.

Kristie is kind with a capital K, so it’s quite the surprise when she wakes up next to a dead man with no recollection of the previous night. Even worse? She’s naked. Kristie may be a sweetheart out to save the world, but sticking her nose into an investigation of rapes across campus makes her the target of a murderer. Before she knows it, Callie is smack dab in the middle of a murder investigation with her colleagues Callie and Anna. If that’s not enough to drive a sane person up the wall, a friend has decided he’s going to keep her safe whether she wants him to or not. And, oh yeah, he’s her man and that’s that.

Come join us at Callie’s Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu. You are most welcome, but you may need to serve yourself as our barista Kristie is busy trying to save the world.

Warning: Although there are plenty of moments that will make you shake your head and laugh at the antics of the ladies of Callie’s Cakes, the subject matter – rape on college campuses – is very real and somewhat darker than your usual cozy mystery.

About the Author

I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom's Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Women. When I wasn't flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage, every once in a while, to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. But being a lawyer really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out being a B&B owner wasn’t my thing either. I decided to follow the husband to Istanbul for a few years where I managed to churn out book after book. But ten years was too many to stay away from ‘home’. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.

Paranormal Romance

Divided by Centuries

Diana Dearborn knows all about romance, at least in the books she writes. But passion eludes her in real life—until she’s offered the chance to travel back in time to Camelot. The world of King Arthur and Guinevere is nothing like she pictured, and neither is the knight she encounters upon her return to San Francisco: Gawain, the hero of her current project. He’s complicated, mysterious, and sexier than anything her imagination could conjure. And he’s been waiting for her…

Entwined by Desire

Now, joined together in a desperate race, Diana and Gawain must prevent an ancient, evil force from wreaking mayhem in the all-too-real present. Diana must learn to trust Gawain, even while she encounters secrets about her own past. But even if their mission succeeds, does Diana’s destiny lie with this man from another time—and will their love alter history forever?

EXCERPT

Making love to her had been a miracle. Gawain couldn’t regret it. The way she opened to him, the way she trusted him. He’d worried when she was so hesitant. He’d wondered if she was too damaged by her previous experience.

Had he been gentle enough with her? It had cost him every ounce of his control to go as slowly has he had, when he wanted to claim her as his own, fast and fierce, with the right to protect and defend her, the right to make love to her, for them to bear children together and stand together against all comers.

Gawain felt her stir in his arms. She still had her sleep shirt on, though it was entirely unbuttoned, leaving her soft breasts pressed against his chest. He had captured her thigh between his own as she dozed after sex. This was how they should sleep together, always.

She wiggled the leg between his. He opened his thigh immediately. “Did your leg go to sleep?”

“No. I just liked the feel of it against your, uh, you know.’

He raised his brows. “Against my ‘you know’? Those are my bollocks and my cock you’re speaking of.”

Her eyes went dark. “Yes.”

“I know you know those words. You use them in your books.”

“Yes.” She cleared her throat. “Well, it’s a little different saying them to someone in real life.” She cleared her throat again. “I, uh, I hope it was okay for you.”

“Yelling is a clue. You don’t often get yelling.”

She tried to suppress a smile and looked down.

He felt his cock springing to new life. Would he ever get enough of her? “I’m not sure your research is yet complete if you have to resort to ‘you know’ to describe things.” He rolled over on his back and scooted her over next to him. “Don’t you think you should explore a little yourself? Just in the name of research.”

She grinned but looked away.

“You can’t possibly be shy after opening to my mouth the way you did.”

“Was…was I too brazen?” She looked stricken.

“A man likes his woman to be lady in public and brazen in bed. You were perfect.”

“So, uh, I should be brazen now.” She slid a glance down to his groin.

“Yes.”

She took her lip between her teeth as though she were girding her own loins. “I suppose you know that all those things I wrote in my books—they were pretty much just words to me. I know the words well enough but…”

“But you should explore the reality,” he said.

She smiled shyly. “If you’re sure you wouldn’t mind.”

“I’ll bear up.” At least this time he could wait. He’d had one hell of an orgasm less than an hour ago.

“Well, I think I’ll start with your nipples. I was very curious earlier, but I didn’t like to, uh, just.... Well, you know.”

“You think you’re conveying something with this phrase ‘you know.’ But you’re not. Could you mean ‘lick them’?”

She sighed as if relieved. “Yes. Lick them.”

She bent over him and touched her tongue to his right nipple. Sensation shot to his groin. He hadn’t expected that. Not from just a nipple. Not after having spent himself so forcefully less than an hour before. She ran her tongue over it and then sucked gently. He cleared his throat. Now she raked her teeth across it, not biting, but the mere possibility of biting made him feel open and vulnerable to her. She continued working at it, alternating techniques while her other small hand gravitated toward his other nipple and began to tweak it.

She pulled up. “Now, describe how that feels please.”

“Good.”

She frowned at him. “I can’t just say it feels ‘good’ in my books.”

“Well, I’m a man. Men don’t wax flowery over…over things like that.” He took a breath. “That doesn’t mean you have to stop.”

She slipped down and slid her tongue into his navel. “I have other fish to fry right now. I’ll try to get back to them later.” She pulled his thighs apart and he obliged her. “I’ve read,” she said meditatively, “that the area just behind the testicles is very sensitive.” She took two fingers and rubbed the spot in question slowly, deeply. Lord, he was hard as a rock already. Could things get any more intense? “Is that true?” she asked.

“Uh, yes.” Where did she read these kinds of things? In books like hers?

“Pleasurable?”

“That would be yes.”

“And balls, do you like them caressed if I promise to be very gentle?”

“I, uh, I don’t know. No one’s ever done, uh, that exactly to me.”

“You surprise me.” She gave a knowing smile. “A man with your experience?”

The last woman he’d had was the Green Knight’s wife, and that was many years ago. At the thought of the Green Knight and his failure of honor, his heart contracted. He had to put that failure away. This was for Diana. He would perform the act of loving with her, for her, as a healing rite. That was the height of honor. And if it wasn’t, then honor be damned.

Review + #Giveaway: The Ghostwriters by Mickey J. Corrigan @GoddessFish

The  Ghostwriters
by Mickey J. Corrigan
GENRE:  psychological thriller, romance

BLURB:

She's funny, cynical, and kinda crazy, but she knows how to tell a story.

A struggling writer living in Manhattan, Jacy McMasters is the first to admit she's a terrific liar and a screw-up. Then the ghost of the famous novelist JD Balinger asks her to "channel" a follow-up to his classic coming of age book The Watcher in the Sky. Along with her new boyfriend, a bear of a man who has no patience for mind games, the ghost in Jacy's head forces her to confront a lifetime of secrets—dark secrets. Secrets she's been keeping from herself.

Excerpt:

When I woke up the next day, I felt awful. My eyes were swollen shut so I had to tumble out of bed and crawl through clustering dust-devils to the bathroom. I'd suffered worse hangovers after overindulging, but there was a real sharp edge to this one. When I steamed my eyes open with a hot wash cloth, I noticed it right away.

I was still hallucinating.

"You look bad, Jacy my girl," JD said from his cross-legged perch on my wicker laundry hamper. "First thing we need to do is ease back on the hard core boozing."

I screamed once or twice before he uncrossed his spidery limbs and said, "Don't be a ninny. You know who I am, that I come from you. From your own deranged mind. So what's the sense of yelling, disturbing your neighbors?"

He had a point. I calmed a little and said, "You may be an illusion, my illusion. But that does not mean you can stay in my bathroom while I shower."

He shrugged, brushed by me on his way out. "I'll make coffee. And when you come out, all fresh and bright-eyed, we'll discuss how I can save you. Help dislodge you from your habitual cycle of wanton, destructive choices. No more dabbling. Time for you to shed your loser image, child. It is high time. Take my word."

My Review:

Jacy McMasters is a struggling writer who is stuck in the in between. She dropped out of school and now works at a brewery on the weekends struggling to stay afloat with all her bills which include student loans. Jacy is just trying to survive the day to day hustle of life when she has a visitor. Her new friend is the famous author J.D. Balinger who just happens to have passed away a few days ago. J.D. comes to Jacy wanting her to write his next bestseller. With Jacy being down on her luck and needing the money she decides to take the job and so begins her writing secessions with J.D.

Not only is Jacy struggling to become a writer she is also going through a dark time in her life where she spends most of her nights drinking trying to make herself numb to the point where she can’t feel anything and can block out a lot of stuff that she wishes to forget. Jacy is headed down a deep dark hole one that she may not be able to come out of on her own.

But Jacy is lucky when she meets a guy Firth who she likes lot and wants to be friends with but she is not sure if she can be friends with anyone. It has been a long time since Jacy has been able to trust anyone not since her boyfriend dumped her.

I will have to say The Ghostwriter was not quite what I was expecting. Mickey J. Corrigan had me guessing from the first page. Mickey will take you down these long corridors that just go on and on not knowing where you are going to end up next. One minute you think you have Jacy’s life figured out and then the next minute you are like whoa wait a minute I didn’t see that one coming. I love a book where the author can keep you guessing through the whole book. When you can’t figure out what is going then that makes one fantastic book that will stay with you for days and years to come.

I would highly recommended The Ghostwriter to anyone who loves a good story and great mystery not to mention a great writer.

Book Blast + #Giveaway: 51 Love by Jeremy T. Ringfield @JTRingfield @GoddessFish

51 Love
by Jeremy T. Ringfield
GENRE: New Adult Contemporary Romantic Suspense

BLURB:

This story is about Abram, a hopeless romantic who enrolls into college and begins leaving love notes for the girl, Jec, who works at the front desk of his student apartments. About why they know each other when neither have even met. That's right, she had seen his face only two weeks earlier, when he tossed his book bag in the middle of the street, holding up traffic like a mad homeless man. But what she doesn't know is that just before he came to grab his keys to move in, the handsome albeit strange eyes and the person they belong to had just been released from the county jail.

The jail cell talk without any cameras around to record make his last 51 minutes in the pen with a sketchy bunkmate a do or die conversation that may explain why he became homeless, why he wrote the love letters in the first place, and if both were random at all.

Excerpt:

Chapter 9

The same day in August, 2015

I think, for the price of a pizza, the experience of the novel is priceless.

A literary ecstasy, this was not a book I wanted to lend. I had to have it.

My co-worker interjects my thoughts, “Is that lighter fluid? What is he burning out there in our fire pit? I’m telling you Jec, that dude killed somebody. You haven’t seen him around as long as I have. The way he’s always scrunching his face, looking like a stone cold killer with all that stinking thinking. Some people struggle with who they really are. And when it goes foul, you know they don’t always catch these people.”

He picks up and holds out the book I am reading titled Wait For You, and says, “Some novels you have to read twice to really see all the beauty in the nuances, but these plots don’t always end beautifully Jec. You should start reading more of them.”

I take a bite out of an apple and stop scratching my thumb across a squiggled smear on my permanent marker to look out the window as I reply to my front desk co-receptionist, “Bobby, you’re being ridiculous. It just looked like he pulled some papers from a box and threw them into the pit. Hey, where’d he go?”

Bobby answers quickly, “No really, have you seen him using his hands on the street? He’s probably practicing some lethal judo that nobody knows right now. Hi-yah!—”

Ding-Ding.

At the sound of the front door bell I tried to smother my giggle in professionalism, but I no longer found it necessary to suppress as the blurry silhouette of the person entering the front door became clear and my laughter came to a sudden halt.
