Excerpt:

CHAPTER 1

Scalding hot water traced the scars along my back as I placed my hands against the stone shower wall. As a warrior angel I have survived several years of battle, but not unscathed. I have many battle wounds—most of which reside on my back and arms. Wounds from human weapons we tend to heal without a problem; wounds by the weapons of angels and demons are not so forgiving.

After weeks of searching for him, last night I finally caught up with the demon I had been hunting. He put up a ferocious fight and my muscles were still aching despite the heat of the shower but I would be getting briefed on my next case soon so reluctantly I reached out and turned off the faucet.

Just before I stepped out of the shower, I froze. The air changed, and I knew that I was no longer alone. Don’t ask me how I knew because I couldn’t tell you. Not really. There was no pop, or bells; no flash of light, breezes, or anything like that. It was as if there was just the slightest shift in the air. I braced for attack, reached my right hand behind my back, and unsheathed a sword that wasn’t there a moment before. My heavenly relics—my weapons—are always there when I need them and never when I don’t. Where they go when I am unarmed, I have no idea. All that matters to me is that they are there when I reach for them.

With my left foot, I kicked open the glass door and stepped out into the empty bathroom, dripping wet. Utterly naked but for my sword. I peeked around the door and slowly entered my bedroom.

“What do you want?” I said to the empty room, making my voice as calm as possible.

“Relax, Beauty, I’m completely unarmed,” said a humored voice without a face. “You’re looking just as scrumptious as the last time we faced each other.”

A dark-haired figure walked in, full of ease, and leaned against my bedroom door, crossing his feet. He had an apple from my dining-room table in his hand. I spun my sword, placing the tip of it into his throat the moment he walked through the door. He brought the apple to his mouth, rubbed it against his shirt, and took a big bite, looking as though he didn’t have a care in the world.
It was Colton.

Love is an addiction. And its name is Scott Melt-Your-Panties Meyers.

For twenty-five-year-old Amy Miles, moving into her craptastic new apartment was like winning the lottery.

Here, she could start over.

No more nightmares. No more drama. No constantly looking over her shoulder, waiting for the boogeyman to strike.

No, she was done with all that. She was going to be a normal girl, dammit.

Then Scott Meyers saunters into her life.

She knows she should stay away from her hot-as-sin apartment building manager.

Shouldn’t put her heart out there, or get into another hot, romantic mess.

Two years of heartache, a helluva lot of tequila, and buried regrets should have been enough to make her call it quits on passion.

Except, Amy knows the moment she lays eyes on Scott, she’s not going to be able to run away from the undeniable attraction between them. They’re both damaged goods—and there’s a saying that darkness calls to darkness.

But some ghosts won’t be laid to rest.

When a stalker from Amy’s past returns, hell-bent on ending her life, she realizes happily ever after with Scott is just a dream. For his safety, she should walk out the door and never look back. It’s what the old Amy would have done—run like hell. Away from her past, away from inevitable heartbreak.

Except this time, she’s tired of running.

She’s ready to fight—even if it kills her.

“Why Gentlemen Are Sexy” – by Lola Taylor

Reading romance is like going on a first date every time you open your next book. As you read you’re getting to know the hero, falling in love with him page by page. Some romances are sweeter than others. Some are bittersweet. Some are hotter than hell and steam up the screen of your ereader. And all of that’s fabulous and makes you excited to read more romance.
So you pick up another book off your gigantic TBR romance pile, eagerly gearing up for your next first date… only to discover about fifty pages in that your prince is more like a toad.
Or, more accurately, an asshole.
Symptoms of a First-Class Jerk
I see it all the time in hotter romance. The hero is, well, kind of a tool. He doesn’t hold the door open for you. He’s demanding with little compassion. He demeans or humiliates you. He’s possessive because “he just has problems and a helluva lot of baggage, baby.” But don’t worry, he’ll work on that. (Never.)
He thinks he’s all that. He thinks you’ll stick around because hey, what other options do you have? And who could compete with him anyway? He’s just that awesome (and full of crap).
What he doesn’t realize is that gentlemen are sexier.
I like heroes who treat their women with respect. Who make the heroine feel pretty when she’s just rolled out of bed, who bring her breakfast in bed—preferably after a hot round of “let me show you how much I love you.”
I like heroes who are there for their women no matter what, through the good and the bad. Heroes who would never put the heroine down or make her feel bad about herself. Heroes who encourage the heroine to be independent and bring out the best in her.
I like heroes who are tough as nails without being crazy or possessive. An alpha male who knows how to be a teddy bear around his woman, and who treats her like a queen.
I like reading and writing about gentlemen.
Because, in my opinion, nothing is sexier on a man than confidence—and adoration and respect for his queen.
***
Who’s your favorite swoon-worthy hero? Be sure to mention what series/book he’s from so the rest of us can fall in love with him, too.

Excerpt:

Cornelius leaned over the bar, his voice wispy and deep. “They say she was born with the mark of darkness, killing her first man at two.”

The bartender’s voice grew louder. “A vixen and horror of the seas, she is. She’d be the rarest beauty ever to fall upon any man’s eyes, but dare you gaze upon her, and your eyeballs would be plucked from your skull with her twin blades at her side. Her only love is the darkest parts of the sea where sharks follow her like babies to a mother. The Dark Eve, her ship, be stained red with blood, and sirens sing at the helm, estranging men from their souls. And treasures,” Cornelius paused, his voice straining, “mountains of gold, cursed by her blood, hidden.”

Hurly lifted an eyebrow in response as Cornelius continued.

“I tell you, be careful!” he warned, his voice rising. “She’s not to be messed with. Her heart is black!” he stressed, spitting out the words. The air of the tavern had grown thick with the influence of the old man’s speech.

Guest Post:

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Start writing. Do it every day. If I could go back I would have started so much earlier that 30! But I didn’t ever think that I could or would be an author. I just thought I had a very large imagination, which wasn’t very practical or useful. It didn’t even register in my brain to be a writer until the idea and story presented itself and I couldn’t help but to write it. Write down your ideas, all of them!  It took me four years to write, The Dark Eve: A New Recruit.  Four years!!!! After that though it only took me six months to do my next. I had figured out my method of writing and now that I had, it was all too easy to continue writing.

Have realistic expectations of yourself and of others around you. Not everyone is going to support you the way that you want them to. Even my own mother hasn’t read my first book. She is not a big reader and falls asleep with every book she reads. Accept what others are willing to do to support you or you could find yourself very frustrated and disappointed with large expectations.

Spend a whole lot of time just thinking about your characters. I talk to people all the time that are so excited about their plot and the idea of the book that they forget we have to follow someone’s journey. Sometimes I just run through conversations in my head with my characters. Some don’t ever see the page, but they become very real to me that I can talk about them as if they were a real live person. Remember everyone has a present, future, and a past, your characters should have them as well.

Join a writers group were you can get honest critiquing feedback and don’t ever get defensive of what feedback you get. You need to know how your story reads through another person’s mind. Whether or not they were confused or had an emotional experience. You need to see what a reader sees, because the book lives and breathes in your mind like a movie can. Does the reader experience the same thing? A good way to start is by asking those that read it for you these questions. What did you like? What didn’t you like? Were you ever confused or bored? What type of emotions did you feel? What do you think will happen next?

AUTHOR BIO:

I was born in Provo, UT and raised in copper mining towns in-between Arizona and New Mexico.  I can be compared to a lizard. The warm weather makes a great home, but I have always had a love for the rain and overcast skies, extremely contradictory from my given habitat. That’s how I see myself sometimes, a lover of opposites. I would consider my childhood to be groundless when it came to my imagination.  I was trapped inside my own mind and I believe I learned the world in small harsh but necessary truths, like a slow awakening.  My little stories had their encompassing place along with underdeveloped drawing skills.  But rationality whispered in my ears through my upbringing. I sought out what I felt to be important, the events of graduating high school, Silver City, NM 1999.  I went to a safe community college in Thatcher, AZ.  They say that college is a large defining time in a young person’s life. It’s where they start to wonder about who they are, what they know as truth, and far away from those that defined it for them.  I was of course set with innate knowledge and experience and given power with irrational brain resources.  My heart had plenty of stitches and I gave many to others. But I could not find peace in a single person. My ideas of life, love, and the world that I wanted to exist in felt unattainable. Having the whole picture felt like an impossible task. I went on a mission for my church in Washington, where I happily got my rain and clouds. Spending eighteen months dedicated to serving others and not yourself is a mind-opening task.  It set me up to find the true roots within and be ready to insult my future husband Dustin Thompson when he walked through the door. I am as plain as I want to be.  I have three crazy children to help fuel my life and since have received my Bachelors Degree in business management, UOP.  But most of all I have tapped back into my imagination, pushed aside all rationality, and finished one of my best thoughts so far. Every day I continue to face my vulnerabilities.

Book Blast + #Giveaway: A Lady Never Lies by Stephanie Burkhart @StephBurkhart @GoddessFish

A Lady Never Lies
by Stephanie Burkhart
GENRE:  Steampunk Romance

BLURB:

Jocelyn Dunkirk is not your typical Victorian lady. She dresses in leather, wears goggles and is not afraid to get a little grease under her fingernails. Gentlemen avoid her like a dirty rivet.

Richard Windsor, the Prince of Wales, travels through time to claim Jocelyn's heart, but if it isn't one challenge, it's another. He determines to be a constant, steady presence in her life, hoping to prove he'd make a worthy husband.

Jocelyn's facing a bucket full of problems. The Prime Minister wants her to assist in ending a coal strike before it cripples the nation while her father attempts to recover from a serious injury. Will Jocelyn's dedication to her country and family ruin the one chance she has at love?

Excerpt:

Richard approached and stood behind her, looking past her shoulder. "I suppose it can be. Do you want to talk?"

"Not really."

Richard remained quiet, aching to touch her and offer her the physical comfort he believed she craved, but he waited for her to give a signal.

"I think today went well," she began, still staring. "Mr. Ruston and Mr. Foster have guards and they've promised to keep shipping coal."

"They did."

"And we've got an escort to meet with the coal mine owners in York."

"We've got to be on our guard."

"How so?"

"I saw Jonas talking to them and it didn't sit right with me."

"Why not?"

"I can't trust his motives or intentions. They were questionable the last time he visited."

She turned around to face him again, but Richard kept his hands clasped behind his back, straining his will power. He wanted nothing better than to touch her all over.

"Who is Mr. Brandon? The man I gave my scent to?"

"He's a reporter from the future. I don't trust him much, but I think there's something physically wrong with him. He told me he felt time displacement the last time the machine was used and the Professor sent him back to study his vitals."

"I take it that's unusual?" she questioned.

"Yes." He paused. "He promised to keep an eye on Jonas, but I need to watch out for him."

"Good."

"Why do you look so withdrawn? I hate seeing you like this. Is it Augustus?" Richard asked.

"Some. He's out of his element. This is all new to him. It will take him time, but I believe we've laid a foundation to build a relationship on."

"And your father?"

She raised her hand, cupping her cheek. "I don't know what I'll do without him."

"You've got to think about that possibility. I don't mean to sound insensitive, but we've both seen him. He's not getting better."

She hung her head. "No, he's not."

"I'm so sorry..." His voice broke.

Jocelyn moved toward him. She wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head against his chest. "Hold me."

Richard's heart soared with happiness knowing that she reached out for him, because his own willpower was about to break. Then the reality of the situation crashed against him.

Book Blitz + #Giveaway: The Sweetheart Deal by Allison Morse @AllisonMorseLA @XpressoTours

The Sweetheart Deal
Allison Morse
Publication date: June 5th 2015
Genres: Adult, Historical, Romance

Some people think Ellen Hamilton, the business savvy daughter of the largest employer in town, is too big for her britches. After all it’s the 1950s and women have no place running factories. But when the Hamilton company is threatened with takeover by John Adair, the man who broke her heart and was run out of town years ago, the game is on. Has Ellen met her match? Or, will this time be different and will Ellen win everything—including the handsome and mysterious John.

EXCERPT:

Nancy leaned toward her and whispered, “Isn’t John Adair handsome? Don’t you think he looks like that movie star Burt Lancaster?”
Ellen choked slightly. “No, not really.”
“John lives near Hollywood, you know,” Nancy said, her eyes alight. “Near the ocean!”
Ellen nodded politely. Even Boris Karloff would seem dreamy to Nancy if he could be her ticket out of Pitney.
“So, tell,” Nancy said.
“What?”
“Did you know him?” Nancy’s eyes widened. “I mean, when he worked for your dad.”
“I, ah…” Ellen patted down her dress’s exaggerated puff at her hips. “Yes, sure.”
The man himself strode to the dance floor with Ellen’s mother. Ellen’s throat tightened, and her pulse beat like a conga drum. Swallowing hard, she commanded her body to behave. It didn’t.
Damn. She was hardly some school girl to go all gooey at the sight of him.
Ellen had to admit she was impressed by the elegant way John led her mother around the dance floor, a skill he wouldn’t have learned on a farm or in a factory. His transformation from the boy she had known was complete. He was now perfectly groomed, his wavy red hair tamed by a generous application of pomade, his bulky shoulders filling up the black tuxedo jacket. He had made it. Good for him. But she prickled with irritation. Why did he have to come back?
John continued to whirl her mother around the dance floor. When the waltz was over, he escorted her straight to Ellen. Her mother withdrew a lace handkerchief from her beaded wrist purse and delicately fanned her face with it, as if it were the 1850s, not 1950s. Nancy arched her back slightly as John approached. Ellen crossed her arms.
Apparently oblivious to Nancy, he said, “Hi, Ellie. I was just telling your mother how much I appreciate the effort your family has made to welcome me here tonight.”
Ellen gave him a perfunctory glance, but then her breath caught. Shoot! Just the sight of him did that to her, as well as other reactions in her lower region she was trying to ignore.
It wasn’t just his broad shoulders or his handsome, rugged face that made her react. She’d been around plenty of attractive men. But John had an intensity of expression that had almost knocked her flat the first time she met the young factory worker, who spent his off hours, unbelievably, at the library. As she looked at his once much loved face, she saw he still had that effect on her. But that could be controlled. She’d will it to be so.
Her expression flat, her voice a monotone, she said, “Riesel Lang is an important distributor of Hamilton products.”
John scanned the room. “Quite a gathering. It almost matches the effort I know your family made with my departure.” Acid dripped from his words, which made no sense. What right did he have to be angry? After all, he was the one who had hurt her and jeopardized the family business.
“Oh, really?” Daisy perked up. “I don’t recall a party for you before.”
