Love can thaw the fiercest winter.

In a society where elves are no longer creatures of myth and magic, Brynne Mirren is just trying to survive the holidays as one of Santa’s Rejects. Loyal to her duty as the eldest child, she stands outside in the freezing cold and sell matchbooks—not that anyone would buy anything from an elf. Each fruitless day is the same without exception until her path crosses with Carter Holly. Persistent though he is, she can’t help but wonder if he has an ulterior motive.

After all, very few humans look kindly on elves these days.

Days before Christmas, Brynne’s life takes a drastic turn and she is forced to trust the gentle stranger in the darkest time of her life. Carter Holly continues to surprise her, stirring up new feelings within her with every act of kindness.

Though the threat of freezing along with her matchbooks is very real, Brynne can't forget that falling in love with a human is even more dangerous.

Matchsticks and Candy Canes is the first book co-written by C.E. Wilson and Mary Dublin.

My Review:

Carter Holly has been waiting on this day to come for a year now. Today is the day that the little Elf girl sets up Shoppe across the street from his uncle’s bakery selling matchsticks. Carter has watched the girl for a few years now. He has wanted for so long just to have the nerve to talk to her but unfortunately he has not had enough courage until now. Yep today is the day. Yep today is the big day. The day that he finally does it yep he is going to talk to her.

Brynne Mirren is the oldest child in her family so it has fallen on her shoulders to help out the family. Brynne’s family have been down on their luck as of late her father doesn’t have a job so that is why Brynne sets her cart up on the street hoping that the big giants, the humans will buy them. Brynne has been taught all her life that humans could not be trusted. Brynne is very afraid of all the big giant humans. But when tragedy strikes Brynne’s family and she is left all alone she has no choice but to trust the big giant human.

Carter is the guy that all girls want he is so loving and kind and wants nothing more than to protect Byrnne to keep her safe from all harm. He just has the biggest heart always waiting to help everybody and make them happy.

Brynne is just like all girls who just want to someone to hold her and love her and just make everything better. She has so much warmth and love in her heart. She loves and cares for her family so very much especially her little brother and sister. She loves her father too she knows he is just having a hard time having to live in a world of giants and can’t find a job.

Brynne and Carter make the cutest couple. I just adore Brynne she is so cute and small. I kind of know how she feels living in a world of giants as I do myself. Well I am not as short as she is but I do live with giants. I am 4’10” and my husband is 6’2” so I know what it is like to stand in front of him and have to lean over backwards to see up into his face. Ha-ha! I also have two step-sons who are tall as well. The oldest is 6’5” and the youngest is 6’ so you see I do know a little bit of how she feels.

I have so enjoyed reading Brynne and Carter’s story. There was this one scene that I really loved and that is when Brynne decides to go climbing. I would like to know more about Brynne and her family and how they ended up where they are now. I would also like to read more about Brynne and Carter’s life together. They have a hard road ahead of them but hopefully they can change the world.

With this year I think I am going to start a list of some kind that includes Christmas stories. It is not a wish list, it is a list where you add books that you have read and would read again. But they must be Christmas stories. Matchsticks and Candy Canes have made it on that list. Do you have a list? What is on your list? Have you read Matchsticks and Candy Canes? No? Pick up a copy today and read it by Christmas and then add it to your list.

Genre: Science Fiction /Fantasy
Hosted by: Ultimate Fantasy Book Tours

Blurb:

It's a new day on Earth in the twenty-third century, and an awestruck public is witnessing the stunning arrival of what looks like a lunar lander in Washington, D.C. Called in for their scientific and linguistic expertise, husband and wife team Danny and Chris Marama wait eagerly to meet the alien visitors, whose spacecraft now rests in the American president's Rose Garden. When two space-suited beings emerge, they surprise exo-linguist Danny by speaking English, among other languages, as they disclose their agenda: to explore Earth's technology and return to their home planet with it.

Accompanying them is a prestigious assignment Danny is only too happy to take on. What she doesn't discover until later is their secret agenda, much more sinister and life-changing for Danny, Chris, and the entire human race. And both Danny and Chris must choose: loyalty to Earth, whose leaders may be targeting their own people for death, or to the alien race-and life.

An Interview with Mary Louise Davie:

Are you a full time author or do you have another job as well and if so how do either or these fit in with writing time?

I have several businesses. (One is a production Co) and also I am a presenter; giving NASA presentations across the US. I am up for a position as a NASA Solar System Ambassador which would open up a larger audience to my presentations and love of all things NASA, with the traveling and writing and planning out film productions and I am working on a pilot right now, so much as writing is my biggest love, it sometimes suffers neglect.

Do you write on your novel daily or do you try to have days off?

Because I am working on so many projects including having just started a production company I divide my work between what I have to do & what I want to do. I always want to write, but there are a certain amount of have-to’s that I make sure to devote time every other or every second day. As far as which book or whether to stick with one particular one for a period of time, I let the characters decide. If they are flowing and eager to continue, I listen, but if maybe there is a scene I need to sleep on, I may work on something else first. (I am writing two books, a short story, a pilot, and storyboards so it’s difficult right now!)

If you have a ‘baddy’ in your book, can you tell us a little about this character?

In my book Target Earth there is no black & white. One could see the aliens as the bad guys but as is evidenced by Danny’s deep friendship and regard for them (Ishmael in particular) we see a different side. When we know the why of their coming, it is stone cold, but not bad. The politicians however and the terrorists don’t seem to have a good side but then again are they doing what they perceive is right? I guess I am saying, it is like life, it’s just not that simple.

Is there any romance in your story and if so can you tell us a little about this?

Yes there is romance; actually more than romance. It’s filled with that kind of deep love & caring that we all want and some of us have. The sort where two people complete each other and yet are 110% complete on their own. Don’t have to explain themselves because their partner already knows. Plus they bring you flowers and know you favorite song and your favorite drink and will fight anyone or anything to save you and be with you. As I said before, SciFi, at least my view of SciFI, is life, just with cooler toys and maybe stuff has happened and the rules have changed but when you get down to it, in the middle of it all is people trying to love, live, and figure out what on Earth is going on! So there is romance in Danielle & Christians relationship, but it is more subdued sort which actually in my mind plays more romantic.

Do you ever write sad scenes and do you feel the sadness as you write it?

Yes. Let me give you an example. In ‘Sanacion II: We Are the Aliens” I had one main character die. It was not expected. It was during one of those writing sessions that I release control to the characters and events. It was not in my outline but it happened. I sobbed so hard (I liked the character too!)I had to take a break. During that break my friend said the character didn’t have to die that I was the author and could just write it over. I was adamant that it had happened and flowed and actually was probably what would have happened in real life and so it must stay. But I mourn her still. She and her partner were good together!

What is the time period setting of your latest book?

Target Earth: You Only See What You Want To is set in the 23rd century. There are two classes the ‘plant’ class and the privileged class. While certainly money is some of the difference, the plant is just what it sounds like, a huge building, and this building houses apartments from the small studio to the 3 bedroom home. There is no property, the rooftops are small gardens or playgrounds or like empty lots.

But if you have money you have a house with property but though you pay taxes you really only own the house as the government can come by any time and plant trees where ever they want – constantly calculating what changes need to be made for the continuation of Oxygen.

Can you tell us a little about your protagonist and your antagonist and how they relate to each other?

The protagonists & antagonists are more like teams. Team Human would generally seem to be the antagonists. As far as the protagonists, they’re a little more complicated. Danny & her husband Christian are unique in that they form protagonists both as a couple and as solo entities; as to the aliens Ishmael & Rudy – same thing; separate and together and the story changes one iota.

As far as relating to each other – in the case of Danny and the government while she is quiet about many things and waits to hear what they have to say first, although an intelligent person she still wants to believe they are on her side and so feels true disappointment each time the government shows their true colors.

Kent Casado has lost everything that defined him: his construction business, his husband, his home, and his fortune. He went from one of the first gay men to marry in Colorado, to the first to be divorced. Crushed and alone, his only recourse is to move into a hurricane-damaged cottage in Key West, but his troubles seem to follow him to the beach paradise.

Dusk “Doctor Dusky” Keller has never allowed himself to be defined by anyone or anything. Growing up in the Keys with his hippie parents, he ran an animal hospital until a hurricane destroyed it. He never expects to fall straight into lust with an uptight stranger who he sees on his daily beach walks.

Satisfied with a prolonged one-night stand, neither expects to plummet from casual to complicated.

While Dusk drifted away from him, Kent found himself drawn to inspecting the man. He had longish dirty-blond hair, wavy, and out-of-control; it matched the scruff on his face which was barely more than a five o’clock shadow. He had tanned skin likely from days spent under the heat of the Florida sun, which only served to make his incredible blue eyes stand out.

Those eyes glanced back toward him as if sensing his perusal. Dusk winked at him and waved cheerily. It only worked to make the blue even brighter.

Kent could easily spot at least three tattoos on the dog walker with his beach attire of khaki shorts and a tank top. He had an island and ocean scene on his left arm while his right had several symbols on it that looked almost like doctor symbols, but might’ve been for a vet instead. The edges of some sort of map peeked out from under his shirt in the back.

A few more steps sent Dusk out of his view. It left Kent with one lasting impression—the man did have a nice ass. He might put up with the barking dogs for a closer look at it each morning. Not the chickens, however. Maybe he could write to Popeye’s to offer them up. The locals might not be too thrilled with him, but he might get to sleep in a little.

Stretching his legs out until his feet dug into the sand, Kent relaxed against the steps with his eyes closed against the sun. Florida had certainly not done anything for his productivity. His type-A need to accomplish tasks had taken a nosedive over the last few weeks.
