Soul Finder (The Immortal Gene #2)
by
Jacinta Maree
Genre: NA Supernatural/Dystopian
Release Date: September 16th 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

Since being discovered as Soulless, Nadia has become a target for both terrorist groups and government corporations. Now, her only hope for survival rests in the hands of the man sent out to kill her: Diesel, the Mad Dog terrorist.

Diesel is determined to free himself of the never ending curse of reincarnation and the haunting memories that plague his mind. But when his search leads him to Nadia, a greater desire stills him from taking her life.

Unable to see into Diesel's cracking mind, Nadia instead puts her faith into his strength, fueled by eleven generations of unmatched rage and insanity. Their tight-rope relationship balances the two between life and death, love and rage, trust and betrayal.
Tension pulls at the hems of their dangerous companionship, and as time runs out all madmen must eventually make their choice.

Book two of the thrilling Immortal Gene series dives deeper into the danger of trusting your heart over your head.

Readers discretion: Adult language, violence and some adult scenes. For mature audiences only.

My Review:

Nadia is on the run. She is running for her life. She is a Soulless. Terrorist as well as the government are after Nadia.  Nadia is a survivalist and will do just about anything to stay out of their hands even if it means running right into the arms of the man that was sent to kill her, Diesel. Nadia doesn’t trust anyone but if she is going to make it out alive then Diesel is the best man for the job besides Nadia is very attracted to Diesel. And when they are together to sparks fly.

Diesel is so tired of all the lives he has lived or more like he is tired of all the memories from past lives and wants to end reincarnation and he needs Nadia to do this. But old Diesel is having very strong feelings for Nadia and wants nothing more now than to keep her safe. Diesel along with everyone else doesn’t think he is capable of caring about anyone much less love them. But Nadia can get him to do things that no one has ever gotten him to do before.

Nadia wants to survive; Diesel wants a cure for reincarnation. Can one or both of them get what they want? Will their love for one another survive? Will they find the cure for reincarnation? To find the answers you will have to read Soul Finder to find out if they get what they want or not.

I have loved following along with Nadia on her journey through Soulless and now Soul Finder. I have really enjoyed reading about reincarnation and the Soulless. Soul Finder is one of those books that will grab your attention right from the first page and will not let go long after you have closed the book. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

The Perilous Journey Of The Much Too Spontaneous Girl
(The Perilous Journey of the Not So Innocuous Girl #2)
by Leigh Statham
Publication Date:  September 20, 2016
Publisher:  Month9Books

Lady Marguerite Vadnay and her trusty automaton, Outil, have settled into life in New France rather well. Marguerite is top of the class at flight school and her future as an aerpilot is nearly secure. She has everything she wants— except a commission on the pirate hunting dirigible The Renegade. Using every card in her aristocratic arsenal, Marguerite wiggles her way onto the finest warship France has to offer. But as usual, Marguerite’s plans endanger the lives of those she holds dear— only this time no one else is going to save them. As Marguerite and Outil set off on a rescue mission they may not return from, she finally realizes it’s time to reorder her cogs.

This steampunk adventure is littered with facts from The Golden Age of Piracy and follows (not too closely) some of the lives and adventures of the brave men and women who sailed the seas as privateers, pirates and soldiers.

OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES

Lady Marguerite lives a life most 17th century French girls can only dream of: Money, designer dresses, suitors and a secure future. Except, she suspects her heart may be falling for her best friend Claude, a common smithie in the family’s steam forge. When Claude leaves for New France in search of a better life, Marguerite decides to follow him and test her suspicions of love. Only the trip proves to be more harrowing than she anticipated. Love, adventure and restitution await her, if she can survive the voyage.

An Interview with Leigh Statham

What inspired you to write The Perilous Journey Of The Much Too Spontaneous Girl?

I came across the true story of the Daughters of the King while I was doing some personal genealogy research. The idea of these brave teenage girls sailing to Canada on their own to pick out husbands was so incredible, I just had to write about it. After it was published I began digging deeper into the stories of the pirates of the time and found more historical gems. Pretty sure I won’t be able to let Marguerite and her pirate friends go very soon.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I have always loved writing. I have journals full of stories and the laments of a little girl from the time I was old enough to write. I wrote horror for quite a while as a teen and then bad poetry in college. I took a break from writing after college so I could see the world and “gain life experience”. That was the biggest mistake I ever made. If you are going to write, always write. The experience will come and you will be a better writer for it.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I had a tree house as a little girl. I remember taking books up there to read when the weather was good. I remember loving Harriet the Spy and A Wrinkle in Time. I also remember running out of things to read and not being able to get a ride to the library one summer, so I took The Complete Works of Shakespeare up there. It’s funny what you’ll push yourself to read when you are hiding from your mother and her list of chores.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I love to read all genres. I struggle with fantasy (funny huh?) if the world is too complicated. I have to be able to jump right into a book and feel like I’m part of the story.

What is your favorite book?

This is a trick question. There are about five million books tied for first today. But if I randomly had to pick a book I love, today I’d say The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath. I recently reread this book and loved it all over again. For something more contemporary, I also read All the Truth That’s in Me, by Julie Berry, and absolutely loved it. Both of those women are experts at writing tension and keeping their readers on the edge of their seats.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

As I said above, this has to be a trick question. When I think of collective works, I’d have to say my favorite authors are probably (because I’m not going to pick just one) Madaline L’Engle, Neil Gaiman, Tolkien, Lois Lowry, and Cate Tiernan. Why? World building. Every single one of these authors is an amazing world builder. I can get lost in their stories and characters and forget myself and my problems any time I want. And isn’t that the goal of any good writer?

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Some people might think this is crazy, but I would have loved to live through the 1800’s. Maybe even on the American frontier. I’ve always loved stories from that era, the birth of the industrial revolution, trains, horses, ships, the world waking up from a long dusty dream.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Writing is difficult no matter who you are. If anyone tells you any different, they aren’t writing quality work. Unless you’re Hemingway: “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I have a ton of allergies, but I love animals, so I have to chose carefully. Otherwise we’d probably live on an ark overflowing with fur babies! Right now I have chickens, a fluffy inside dog, two outside cats complete killers and we just got a parakeet today. His name is Charlie the Unicorn.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Thai food. Weird, huh? But I just don’t find it very often, especially not good Thai food. Fix me up with some green curry and coconut milk... yum!

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Read and write every day. If you aren’t reading you can’t write. If you aren’t writing, you’ll never be an author.

Leigh Statham was raised in the wilds of rural Idaho, but found her heart in New York City. She worked as a waitress, maid, artist, math teacher, nurse, web designer, art director, thirty-foot inflatable pig and mule wrangler before she settled down in the semi-quiet role of wife, mother and writer. She resides in North Carolina with her husband, four children, five chickens and two suspected serial killer cats. If the air is cool and the sun is just coming up over the horizon, you can find her running the streets of her small town, plotting her next novel with the sort of intensity that will one day get her hit by a car.

SNEAK PEEK:

And those lips—the gloss was all but gone and I could make out the contours of her mouth. A mouth made for kissing.
She made a face at me before she turned away, trying to get the bartender’s attention. “My mother always said it was impolite to stare.”
“She should know better than anyone how impossible it is to not stare at you. You’re beautiful, Penny.”
The look she gave me was so incredulous that it made my fingers twitch into a fist, ready to take on whatever demons had convinced her to take compliments with a grain of salt.

NBTM + #Giveaway: Ten Days in October by Ashish Malpani @ashishmalpani @GoddessFish

Ten Days in October
by Ashish Malpani
GENRE: Fiction: Crime

BLURB:

'5 a.m. phone call broke Police Inspector Shivaji Chavan’s sleep informing him that local jeweler Anil Kokate, was found hanging from a tree on the banks of Pravara River in a small town of rural India. Although the signs point to an open and shut case of suicide, Chavan suspects foul play. While trying to find the missing pieces of the story he finds more hidden skeletons and comes across astonishing & cruel past of the victim. What begins as a routine investigation quickly turns darker, ruthless and pressing. Can Chavan handle the pressure of his superiors, local media and frightened masses? Can he navigate the system to reach the killer? Can he solve the moral dilemma when he comes face to face with the killer?

Excerpt:

On the first day of Navratri, the Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Durga, Inspector Shivaji Chavan is woken up by a phone call informing him about the public suicide of Anil Kokate. Kokate was found hanging from a tree on the banks of Pravara River. After inspecting the crime scene, Chavan has reason to believe that it may not a suicide case. But little that he knew that this was just the beginning, a routine investigation was about to turn into something that is darker, more deadly and pressing. Trying to navigate through the system, Chavan relies on his own instincts, hoping to find the truth- and a killer who is terrorizing the town.

Guest Post:

I have travelled to over forty countries around the world and still there is a long list of things that I want to experience. I was always a history and nature buff. As a kid I was fascinated with grandeur of pyramids and Abu Simbel, the intricate carvings and paintings of valley of kings and beliefs of ancient Egyptians about life and after life. Even after spending two weeks in  Egypt, I will love to go back there again. The snow clad Andes, sacred valley and Macchu Picchu and dense Amazonian forests ensure Peru a place on my list of top ten places to visit as well. My protagonist in ‘Ten Days in October’, inspector Shivaji Chavan shares the love for exploring new places with me.

The Alhambra in Grenada, Mezquita in Cordoba, the bustling La Ramblas and Gaudi architecture in Barcelona, the colors and flamenco of Seville, the serenity of the Mediterranean Sea and the liveliness of Madrid earns Spain a spot on the list too. Looking at the beautiful La Sagrada Familia, I wondered about the motivation of Gaudi while designing and building the cathedral. I had the same feeling when I visited Sri Lanka. Even after years of civil war the country was very welcoming and the people were happy to get on with their life. The ancient Buddhist capital cities of Anuradhapura and Pollonurwa, intriguing Sigriya and chaotic Colombo put Sri Lanka on my list too. Even in everyday life, I like to put myself in others’ shoes to understand what drives people. That is another trait I believe my protagonist has in common with me.

Mystical and spiritual feel of the Jerusalem air, weightless feeling of the Dead Sea, access to Palestine and the rich history makes me want to visit the city and Israel again. Making everyone who visits the place forget about their daily struggles in search of something more adds Varanasi in India to the list. The Kingdom of Bhutan that measures the happiness rather than GDP is very intriguing indeed. Although I don’t consider myself very spiritual, I do believe that the faith helps you find the peace. My portrait of Madhuri in the novel is a reflection of that belief.

Kecak dance on a backdrop of setting sun in Indian Ocean, embracing waters around Tanah Lot temple and beauty of Bali, the religious harmony in Java and giant dragons of Komodo Island make me want to visit Indonesia again. As a kid, I have witnessed the Hindu-Muslim riots in Sangamner and I definitely think the world can learn a lot from Indonesia when it comes to adapting and respecting each other. My protagonist in the novel does demonstrate restraint and respect even when he has the power that makes others in his position behave with arrogance.

Finally, how can I forget the town I grew up in back in India? In fact the story of ‘Ten Days in October’ is based in Sangamner. Pravra River, the town and the people are dear to my heart and I couldn’t picture any other setting for my story. I am up for visiting Sangamner anytime.

VBT + #Giveaway: The General's Wife by Sara R. Turnquist @sarat1701 @GoddessFish

The General's Wife
by Sara R. Turnquist
GENRE: Historical Romance

BLURB:

“Go home!” Ismene is speechless as she reads those words written in blood on the walls of her new home. The young, raven-haired Grecian beauty had traveled all the way from her homeland to marry the Pharaoh’s top general. But she never expected this. The hatred of the Alexandrian mob for their Greek rulers is right in front of her. It is the first of many threats she will receive.

Things are escalating out of control. Damaged crops and horses turned loose at night are one thing. But when Ismene receives a death threat, it becomes clear that there is a spy within her own household. She would turn to her husband to deal with this issue, except he left for battle by order of the Pharaoh. Not knowing whom to trust, she fears for her safety as well as the entire ruling class of Egypt.

Excerpt:

Once they were alone, he gathered Ismene into his arms. “Love, are you truly all right?”

“I am.” She sighed, closing her eyes and just breathing in the scent of him. “Now.”

He kissed the top of her head and rubbed her back. When he closed his eyes he could still see the scene that he had come upon when he had found her on the balcony, and his blood ran hot. He forced his mind back to the present.

“I have a surprise for you.”

“Truly?”

“I thought I might read to you.”

“Oh?” She pulled back to look into his face. “That is a pleasant surprise. I think, sir, that you have found my weakness.”

“I think you know mine too, milady.” He said, drawing her in for an intimate kiss.

An Interview with Sara R. Turnquist

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Cold Stone Creamery’s Birthday Cake Remix. Love that stuff!

Which mythological creature are you most like?

Pegasus. Because I’m unique, I soar higher that others, sometimes I take a few low dips from those heights, and while I aim for the moon…I know if I don’t reach it, I’ll land among the stars

First book you remember making an indelible impression on you.

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House…” Series

How do you develop your plot and characters?

I am a “pantser”, which basically means I don’t do a lot of outlining or plotting. I write “by the seat of my pants” and let it unfold as I write. I have a vague sense of a beginning and plot before I get started. Then, with my characters established, they seem to take the story away. I write until I come to a place that needs research. Then I research which inspires me to write more, then I write until I come to another place that needs more research… Sometimes characters do things I don’t anticipate. I know it sounds weird to non-writers, but it’s true. Once you have established their character, they do what they will do, I can’t make an introvert, for example, be the life of a party. They will do what I’ve set in motion for them to do in a given scene or situation.

Describe your writing space.

I write in different spaces. My “working” space is a u-shaped dark colored desk with plenty of space to spread out my research and notebooks (although now I mostly keep all that in Scrivener). I have all the tools I need handy (printer, stapler, pens, etc.). I have boards with pins on them so I can pin up character or plot notes as needed, though because I’m a pantser, I mostly have a running timeline of where my different manuscripts are (with a beta reader, in development, with an editor, etc.). But I cannot write in a cluttered mess. A cluttered area for me equals a cluttered mind.

Something has been awakened which prompts their parents to take them away to a town called Midway where they reveal to the twins that they are not human. About the Author

Kevin Fleming has lived in Liverpool, England, all his life, born into a family with roots in Ireland, Yorkshire and London. All his family apart from he and his wife have long since left Liverpool to spread across the globe, even as far as New Zealand. He feels as though his ancestors all congregated in Liverpool, dropped him off then quietly left.
Even as a child he wanted to write a book but never had the patience to continue beyond the first page. Despite many more failed attempts through his teens, the thought of completing a novel stayed with him as an adult working in telecommunications and afterwards running his own business. In 2012 he decided he’d been employed enough for one lifetime and concentrated on writing.
After all the years of trying, ‘The Storyteller’s Book’ finally arrived, quickly followed by 'The Mines of Kothkish', ‘The Warlords of Shreen' and finally 'Carnival of the Otherworld’, to form the series, The Chronicles of Midway.
Married for over thirty years, he has a daughter and son who have now left home and are building lives for themselves elsewhere in England.
