Blurb:

For sixteen years, they’ve hated each other...
and craved each other.

Widowed and betrayed, Eva Castellane will do anything to protect her daughter’s inheritance.
Standing in her way?
Alex Castellane—her late husband’s steely, magnetic half brother.
The man poised to take it all.
Her worst enemy.
Her forbidden temptation.

Stuck together in the family castle, their legal fight spirals into war…
until a common threat forces a reluctant alliance.
Desire blurs the lines.
Chemistry sizzles.
Rules get broken.

But as the verdict nears, one slip could unravel Eva’s explosive secret…

A Duchess with a Secret stands alone within the Montevor Royals Saga. It is a spicy contemporary enemies-to-lovers romance with forced proximity, family secrets, and a hard-won HEA.

Alex

The air outside the basement at Mount Evor Secret Service feels colder than it did inside. It isn’t exactly chilly; just crisp enough to bite, which I welcome wholeheartedly. It clears my head.

“I’m going to walk to the hotel,” Eva says. “I need air.”

“I was about to say the same.”

She shoots me a look. “Please don’t. I don’t want to start thinking we have things in common.”

“What about the duchy?” I taunt.

“Of all the things we don’t have in common,” she quips, “the duchy is the one we don’t have in common the most.”

I smile despite myself. The pretty shell has some humor.

“May I walk beside you?” I ask.

“If you must,” she says after a beat. “But don’t think I’m warming to you.”

“Understood.”

We fall into step, heading toward the hotel located in the city’s historic center. She keeps her arms folded tight across her chest like a shield.

“I want you to know I will fight you with everything I’ve got. Dirty. No-holds-barred,” she warns. “My lawyer, Pauline, is very good at her job.”

I glance over. “So, this is your idea of small talk?”

“If you’d prefer silence…”

“No, this is delightful.”

We keep walking. Pombrio glows in the late-September dusk. The limestone facades catch the last golden rays and appear to be lit from within. Lined with old trees starting to turn, cobbled streets stretch ahead, winding gently. Cafés hum with end-of-day energy, clinking glasses, and low laughter. A faint whiff of woodsmoke rides the breeze.

I’d enjoy this stroll more if Eva weren’t so close. Her presence is magnetic and annoying in equal measures. Her perfume doesn’t help. It has none of the sugary sweetness most ladies favor. Instead, it’s seductive in a sharp, provocative way that’s so much her.

Interview with Alix Nichols

Author of A Duchess with a Secret

Thank you for having me, Nancy! I’m happy to answer your questions about the research and creative process behind A Duchess with a Secret.

I am glad you are here! Thank you for visiting with us today!

Could you tell us about any research trips you took for this story? Which places did you visit, and what made them essential to your writing?

The book is set in a fictional European principality, so the research trips mostly took place in my imagination. That said, the principality is located in the Alps between France, Italy, and Switzerland, and my real-life trips to the region (on both the French and Swiss sides of the border) have definitely shaped how I picture Mount Evor. Fort Vauclairt and its dungeons were inspired by several Swiss and French castles I’ve visited over the years, most notably Chillon and Neuchâtel.

What's the strangest thing you've ever had to research online for your book?

There are a few murders and attempted murders across my books. Every time I research a poison or a murder method, I catch myself glancing over my shoulder and wishing I could leave a little note for the algorithm watching my search history: “This is for a book, I swear!”

What research (history, mythology, science) goes into your world-building?

All of it! For the Montevor Royals series, I’ve written an (admittedly incomplete) history of the realm, from its founding in 986 by a local brigand-turned-knight-turned-prince Isidore Pox-Face, all the way to its current political predicament. The lore behind the nine keys draws inspiration from the medieval legend of Melusine, the mermaid fairy (also known as the Serpent Goddess) — the same one you may have spotted on the Starbucks logo. According to legend, Melusine founded the French royal house of Lusignan. In my fictional world, she may also be the ancestor of Princess Jeanne de Malafosse, who married into the Valois-Montevor dynasty in the 16th century and brought the nine enchanted keys with her to Pombrio…

Have any of the people you've known, past or present, left a lasting impression on your writing journey? If so, we'd love to hear about a memorable experience that stands out to you.

Too many to list. My paternal grandmother stands out the most. She was a wonderful storyteller. My favorite fairy tale she used to tell me was called Armless Lucy. Cross my heart! She had a real knack for giving her heroines Ultimate Expert Level challenges. I’m fairly certain that spark is behind every book I’ve written.

Do you write in the same genre all the time?

Genre, yes. Sub-genre, not always. I enjoy several romance sub-genres and I’ve tried my hand at quite a few of them over the years.

If so, have you ever consider writing in another one?

Of course. I’d love to write a domestic thriller one day. The only problem is I’d probably still give the hero and heroine an HEA… which gets a bit awkward when it’s a thriller, and one of them is likely a psychopath.

Which character, supernatural or human, do you enjoy writing the most and why?

I love writing the brooding, misunderstood hero (cue Mr Darcy). Why? Because I love Mr Darcy. There’s something deeply satisfying about peeling back the layers of a man who appears cold or difficult on the surface and discovering the loyal, passionate heart underneath.

NOAH
As a goalkeeper, I am trained to catch the ball, not a spirited bombshell called Sophie.

~ ~

This year is about righting the wrong Papa did to Maman.
It’s also about proving my worth to Coach and helping my team win gold at the French Water Polo Championship.
With an unruly mutt for company and a part-time gig to pay rent, I’m one hundred percent focused on my objectives.
That is, until I catch an intruder poking around my kitchen.
Sophie Bander turns my world upside down.
My new landlord’s daughter isn’t just the hottest woman alive—she’s the stuff of dreams, the object of my deepest, wildest fantasies. But no matter. Nothing—not even Sophie—can make me abandon my goals.
Except… I want her to distraction.
And that’s the understatement of the century.

SOPHIE
As a realtor, my job is to let properties to tenants, not let one into my heart.
~ ~
This year is about proving to Dad I can be a first-class realtor and a worthy associate.
That’s why I’m in Paris, learning the ropes at a large agency. When I’m done, I’ll go back to Key West, join the family business, and then marry the man of Dad’s dreams.
I don’t need to be attracted to the guy—I’m incapable of sexual attraction, anyway.
That is, until a hunk of a tenant mistakes me for a thief and presses me against the wall in his kitchen.
Noah Masson turns my life into a mess.
He makes me blush and laugh, and fantasize about him all the damn time. He awakens my body. And yet, not even dreamboat Noah can get me sidetracked from my goals.
Or can he?

Cover Reveal: Raphael’s Fling by Alix Nichols @aalix_nichols @XpressoTours

Raphael’s Fling
Alix Nichols
Publication date: November 17th 2016
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

My name is Mia Stoll and I dream about publishing a monograph on medieval Paris. Problem is, I’m better qualified for writing a handbook on how to go from a budding scholar to a pregnant runaway in three easy steps.

– – –

My sister Eva carries a torch for the wrong man. Here’s the gist of my sermons to her: “Drooling over your hunky astronaut boss is a loser’s trek to Calamity with three stops along the way: Heartbreak, Job Loss, and Spinsterhood.”

The thing is, I’m in a terrible—you could even say impossible—position to lecture Eva.
I’m attracted to my own boss.

Raphael d’Arcy is funny, smart, and uber-rich. He’s also smoking hot. That alone should have scared me away, were I not such a dolt, my academic achievements notwithstanding.

But there’s more.

Raphael is France’s most notorious playboy who doesn’t do relationships. He does one-night stands. If sufficiently intrigued, he might do a fling. Which is the most I could ever hope to have with him—a short-lived fling.

So what, right? It’s not the end of the world.

But consider this: Getting my heart broken by Raphael d’Arcy is the least of my worries. Some very serious merde has been piling up in my life lately.

And it’s about to hit the fan.

Raphael’s Fling is a standalone sexy romance in the Darcy Brothers series. No cliffhangers. Guaranteed: a swoony bad-boy hero, laugh-out-loud moments and a happily-ever-after

Book Trailer:

Q&A with Alix:

Tell me about your latest book.

Like the rest of the books in the Bistro La Bohème series, “The Devil’s Own Chloe” is a contemporary romance set in Paris. Albeit not as “light” as some of my other stories, it will still keep you turning the pages and make you laugh out loud every now and then.

The heroine, Chloe, is an up-and-coming French architect who’s great at her job, but not so good with people. An adoptee who’s seen too much loss in her childhood, Chloe is convinced she’s toxic to everyone who loves her, and so she must push them away to keep them from harm.

Are any of the characters based on specific people?

The characters in this book aren’t based on any one person but rather some of the people I know, and some of the issues they’ve had to grapple with.

What inspires you to write?

Quite a few things, actually. My first novel, What If It’s Love?, was inspired by a friend’s story and Marina Tsvetaeva’s love poems. Under My Skin was inspired by Sting’s 1991 ballad Mad About You. The hero of Falling for Emma—recently blinded rock star Cyril—was influenced by Al Pacino’s Lt. Col. Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman.

The name of the bistro where all the BLB books except Winter’s Gift are set is a tribute to French chansonnier Charles Aznavour’s signature song La Bohème.

Oh, and let’s not forget the incomparable, forever-young-in-my-eyes Colin Firth a.k.a. the best and truest Mr Darcy, and my official muse.

Paris plays an important part in this book, and the entire series. Do you see it as one of your recurrent characters?

In many ways, yes. I adore this city, and I hope my books convey some of its magic. A few years ago, when I visited San Francisco for the first time, I had an impression I was returning to a familiar place thanks to Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City. My ambition is that when my readers set foot in Paris for the first time, they feel the same warm glow of recognition I experienced when I walked the streets of San Francisco, looking for 28 Barbary Lane.

What do you love about writing? How about a down side?

The best part of writing a book is when your characters begin to prompt their lines, and when things you didn’t even realize you knew jump into your story straight from some secret corner of your brain.
One of the down sides is when you wake up in the morning, reread a scene you were quite pleased with last night, and you realize it’s crap.

Hemingway once said, “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” Every writer knows what he meant.
