Excerpt:

She paused by the art deco entryway and glared at the bird. “You’ll be seeing your sister, Tyranny, very soon.” The bird cackled back at her, as if to say bullshit.

Nia checked with Barry, who had been the overnight tech. Atlas had been a genius at masking the moon’s new position. Barry never mentioned a change in orbit. Nia fidgeted as she scanned reports from their world-wide network of labs and observatories. No one else had noticed the shift either. But the illusion of normalcy couldn’t last long. And soon, mortals would be affected by change. There’d be no way to hide the reason once the lunacy began.

An email had been waiting for her from the International Space Agency. It didn’t surprise her to receive their request for a presentation detailing Friday’s eruption. While she worked to create a PowerPoint slide show with images from the Helios’ solar dynamic technology, the door to her office remained open. She’d been working on the display for ninety minutes when a knock on the doorjamb distracted her.

Nia’s mouth went dry at the sight of Thomas standing confidently in her doorway. If she thought he looked good on camera, real life was a gazillion times better.

“Good morning.” His deep bass voice stroked her senses the same way his gaze stroked her face. Slow. Sexy.

After spending the day watching his TV program, to have him appear in the flesh twisted desire in her belly. Her cheeks heated. “Morning.”

His piercing green-eyed stare made her think he knew she’d spent her overnight hours thinking about him. A smile spread across his mouth. He strode three steps into her office.

He extended his hand and when she took it a burst of sensual fire spread from his palm to hers. She had to force herself to release her grip. “Won’t you have a seat? How may I help you?”

“I wanted to stop by to thank you again for being so kind to Hailey. You really made an impression.” The corners of his mouth tilted up in a quicksilver smile. The kind of grin a woman could happily drown in.

“She’s a nice girl. Quite mature for an eight-year-old.” Dying to know the girl’s story, Nia nudged Thomas to share. She opted for a completely silent command over muttering. She already knew he could hear those thoughts.

He cocked his head to the side. “She is that. I’ve been raising her since my brother and his wife died a couple of years ago. It’s been difficult for her. Kindness like yours makes an impact on a child. And the uncle trying to raise her. Some days, I find myself completely out of my depth.”

Relieved, she drew a breath. So far, so good. This time, Nia opted for a verbal request instead of the mental version to encourage him to finish the story. “May I ask what happened? To her parents?” Any history he could share might help her confirm her suspicion that he was the man to help her.

Rubbing a fist over his breastbone, as if the memory pained him, he spoke. “They’d gone Christmas shopping. Just a casual trip, a date really. They’d left Hailey with a sitter, thank God, and had planned to make an afternoon of it. They were in the mall food court when the terrorist’s bomb exploded.” Thomas blinked away the sorrow in his eyes. “A radical faction that routinely spouts hatred claimed responsibility. Pursuit of unity and brotherhood idiosyncrasies they espouse only served to destroy. It made me lose faith in humans’ ability to love one another. Beyond familial love, that is.”

Bingo! Thomas was the man Pierus had mentioned. Rather than feeling jubilant, Nia felt slightly panicked. How was she supposed to convince this man goodness existed? It wasn’t like the challenge came with a road map. And what about the second part of the prediction—that an innocent life hung in the balance. Dear goddess, was that Hailey?

Gemma's favorite desk accessories for many years were a circular wooden token, better known as a 'round tuit,' and a slip of paper from a fortune cookie proclaiming her a lover of words; some day she'd write a book. All it took was a transfer to the United Kingdom, the lovely English springtime, and a huge dose of homesickness to write her first novel. Once it was completed and sent off with a kiss, even the rejections addressed to 'Dear Author' were gratifying.
After returning to America, she spent a number of years as a copywriter, dedicating her skills to making insurance and the agents who sell them sound sexy. Eventually, her full-time job as a writer interfered with her desire to be a writer full-time and she left the world of financial products behind to pursue a career as a romance author.

Grace, Sam and Dixie have known each other forever. But Grace has a secret. Pregnant and penniless after one drunken night with Sam, she gave up her baby for adoption without telling him. And condemned herself to twenty years of guilt.

When her daughter traces her, out of the blue, Grace longs to meet her. But she’s asking about her father and if Grace confesses to Sam after all these years, it will surely wreck his marriage to Dixie. How can their friendship survive such a betrayal? Yet does Grace have a choice?

Excerpt

Grace glared at them. Sam didn’t bother to move his hands. If anything, he pulled the girl harder against him, a defiant glint in his eye. Grace had never seen Sam look like that. He looked hungry. And strangely sexy in his own dishevelled way.

The girl kissed him, her lips deliberate as she kept her eyes on Grace. Grace wanted to slap the smirk from her face but when Sam made no attempt to kiss her back, the girl shrugged and eventually slunk away.

“Why did you tell her you’d been dumped?”

Sam grabbed at the bottle precariously balanced on the fruit machine. “What would you call a dirty weekend with your ex?”

“That’s stupid,” Grace laughed. “Dixie went to his twenty-first party.  Big deal. It’ll be your turn next year. Who will you invite from school?”

“That’s easy.” He combed his fingers through his untidy shock of black hair. “I was the school odd-bod, remember? There was only you.”

She remembered, even through the drunken haze of too much vodka and champagne. It had always been the two of them. Until Dixie. And then there were three.

“Here you are, like a mermaid in your sexy see-through top.”

His hand was on her arm, the heat of him, next to her breast, the nipple poking through the thin fabric of her top. It was suddenly hard to breathe.

“Dance with me?”

It was a slow number, barely recognisable over the raucous beat of the party. Sultry, though, throbbing through the wooden floor, up through the soles of her feet to thud against her heart.

“Our song,” he whispered against her hair.

Black Velvet, she recognised it now. Remembered Sam’s crush on Alannah Myles. Felt strangely thrilled that Sam had called it their song. They’d always had each other. And Sam was right here, kissing her for the first time, an intense meeting of lost souls. It had always been their destiny to be together.

***

Danny was strangely riveted. “What happened next?”

“I can’t blame Sam. I totally seduced him.”

“You’d be pretty hard to resist, twenty years ago. Not like now, with your puffy red face and mascara filling your wrinkles.”

“How can you make me laugh at a time like this?” She fished another tissue out of her bag. “I need to start buying waterproof mascara.”

“Here, let me.”

He licked the tissue and applied it to the streaks on her face. For once, she was too exhausted to care what she looked like as she snuggled into the warmth of his shoulder, staring at the gulls as they wheeled and whooped above the harbour.

“I’m guessing you got pregnant? What did he say?”

“He didn’t know. But now I have to tell him everything because his daughter wants to meet him.” Another tear escaped down her cheek. “Everybody’s going to hate me.”

***

They’d loved each other all through that one stolen night, right until the first glimmer of watery daylight. Even drunk on vodka and champagne, Grace had never felt more alive. Sam was her soul mate. How had she never known that before?

When she woke up, Sam had gone out. He stayed out for hours and when he came back, he turned on the TV without saying a word.

“I made chilli. Something to do, left here on my own.”

“I already ate, thanks. Hangover munchies, you know how it is?”

She sat on the arm of the sofa, sick with dread. “What’s wrong?”

“You know what’s wrong. Listen, I’m sorry. But please can we not talk about it again?”

Still, he didn’t look at her. He couldn’t be sorry. He must see they were meant to be together. She stroked his arm but he shrugged her off, leaning as far away from her as he could get.

“Look Grace, stuff happens. I’m not sure how I ended up in your bed but the sooner we can forget about it the better. When Dixie comes back, Christ! This would kill her. Don’t even think about telling her.”

“But last night you said she’d dumped you.”

“Well today, I know I was being a tit. I’ve spoken to her. She’ll be back tomorrow, as planned. We’re fine.”

“What about me? Should I just disappear? Everything hunky-dory because you and Dixie are fine?”

The sarcasm bounced off him. He’d reduced their connection to a drunken fumble. A mistake he didn’t want to pick over. Dixie returned to claim Sam’s bed as well as his heart and nobody noticed how distraught Grace was. She’d never been more lonely.

By Christmas she knew she was pregnant.

Recommended Age:  12+

Synopsis:

Ella Jackson is an ordinary teenage girl whose father just happens to be a rich and famous film director. Her life must be awesome, right? Not exactly. Her father is always working and her stepmother and two step sisters basically live to make Ella miserable. Life sucks, until Ella meets Julian. But, instead of falling in love with him, she finds herself falling in love with the hottest boy at school…her step sister’s boyfriend. In a remarkable coming of age story written by a real teenager, If You Wish confronts bullying, drug abuse, and LGBT rights in a story that is anything but a fairy tale.

Excerpt:

Usually fairy tales start off once upon a time, blah, blah, blah. I guess I could start off my story that way, but then the story wouldn’t be right. The truth is, I’m not a princess. And this really isn’t a fairy tale. There is no magic fairy godmother who goes around turning poor girls into princesses and pumpkins into carriages. So if you want that kind of story I suggest you read something else. This story is going to be about me, Ella. Just plain old boring me. I’m just a normal 16-year-old girl. I’m not special or different in any way at all. That is, I never thought I was special, until I met Julian. But he comes in later. You’ll have to start from the beginning. So go on. If you wish…

VBT + #Giveaway: THE DEVIL'S FLOOD by Pearl R. Meaker @GoddessFish

THE DEVIL'S FLOOD
by Pearl R. Meaker
GENRE: Cozy Mystery

BLURB:

Can a house vanish without a trace? What is the "super booze" that's available at clandestine drinking parties in Golden County? When mummified bodies show up at an archeological dig and a young man gets shot in a duel at a party, can Emory and Madison find the answers in the midst of a flood year?

Excerpt:

“Okay.” Kate said, pulling her phone out of a pocket as Jairus and the crew gathered around me where I stood watching the rescue team go in after my husband. “Here’s a shot of Dr. Crawford.” She held the phone in front of me. “He’s still conscious and managed a little wave, but I’m glad the rescue team is heading in.”

I glanced at the photo. Jebbin lay in a pool of light on what looked like a pile of bedding heaped on a rough wooden floor. His glasses had fallen off. He never looks quite right without them, and
I could tell he was hurting. Probably feeling a bit nauseous as well. In spite of it all he wore a wan grin and had lifted a hand in greeting.

Kate swiped the screen.

In the sharp glare of her phone’s flash a mummified man sat on the floor, his back against a wall. There was a dark stain spilling down his chest from a hole near where his heart would be.

“There’s one part of the company Dr. Crawford mentioned he had.”

She swiped again. “Here’s the other.”

This mummy lay on its back. The flash showed a stain that flowed from his chest and down his side to form a hardened puddle on the floor.

“Which one’s my Grandpa?” Melva gasped.

An Interview with Pearl R. Meaker

Thank you, Nancy, for hosting my book and me!

What inspired you to write The Devil’s Flood?

A comment my hubby made in 2015, while our area was having a flood year, that maybe I should write a book about a flood was what started it. Then talking to local people about other flood years they remembered. Finding out there used to be a house with farm buildings in a place west of town where there’s now a man-made lake and that that whole area is flood plain because two large creeks converge there.

The final touch was reading about a record flood year in 1844 in that area, actually, it affected the area for several miles around because of the courses of the creeks. The floods happening down through the years pulled everything together.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Not until my late forties. I’d always loved reading and I’d made up fan-fiction stories in my head for years. But doing all that writing had no appeal until home computers were affordable.

There was no way I was going to write that all out by hand or type it on a typewriter. ;-)

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Oh gosh! I’ve no idea. My mother was an early elementary school teacher and we always had books at home.

I do remember when I became addicted to reading. It was in fourth grade when I was nine years old. By then my vocabulary had grown to the point where I could read older level books without having to look up words as often. I took off like crazy reading Agatha Christie, Edgar Allen Poe, some science fiction, older level kids books – all sorts of stuff.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

My favorite genre is the one I write in – cozy mysteries. But I do read other genres. I like well written history, some biographies, true crime that isn’t sensationalized, informative books, fantasy, paranormal and some science fiction.

What is your favorite book?

My all time favorite book is The Lord of the Rings. I first read it when I was twelve.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

J.R.R.Tolkien. His world of Middle Earth is so real, so well developed. It never felt childish to be reading about elves and dwarves, hobbits and wizards. Middle Earth is thoroughly believable.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I think I’d go to the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. Although, as in any time period, there were a lot of problems it was also a time of phenomenal growth and inventiveness. The world’s fairs were where all the latest inventions were showcased, so that would be really interesting.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

It changes all the time. Some days the words just flow out of my mind, through my fingers and into the computer. Other days I have to haul them out with a winch.

I rarely know what causes the difference and it rarely seems to affect the outcome. Great days can produce great writing and bad – terrible days the same. I’ve learned to just keep writing and deal with the rest in the editing.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

My hubby and I are companions to four cat-people. Our oldest is Millie, a twenty-year-old black kitty. Then there’s Goldie who is a female orange tabby and is sixteen. After a big jump in years, we have Flaming Chi To. He’s a red color-point Siamese (or shorthair) who has cerebellar hypoplasia which make him wobbly, he’s deaf and has some eye problems too – but we love him dearly. He’s been with us for four years. His buddy, Mr. Midnight (guess what color he is) joined us three years ago. He’s missing his left front leg.

All of them were from shelters except Goldie and I found her under a pile of brush.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

I have a lot of those, that’s why I’m pudgy. Hahaha. Dark chocolate. Lobster. Filet mignon. A really good hamburger. Potato chips. Spicy food. Chinese food. And many more.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Be prepared to work hard. Even with the big publishers, authors are now expected to do more and more of their own marketing and promotional work. The writing is only the beginning of the job.

But it is a wonderful feeling when you start hearing from people who really enjoy your work. When you know you’ve touched their lives, entertained them and given them a break from the everyday.

AUTHOR BIO:

Slightly quirky, always creative, Pearl R. Meaker has been an artist, singer and craftsperson her whole life. Although she's always had stories in her head, they didn't come out to play with others until the advent of home computers with their ease of making corrections and moving bits around.

After several years of writing fanfiction in the world of Tolkien's Middle-Earth, she took a couple of writing courses and dove into writing original works of fiction, and The Emory Crawford Mysteries were born.

When not playing with story ideas you can find Pearl playing with yarn either knitting or crocheting, doing other arts and crafts, bird watching and photographing nature, playing bluegrass fiddle (her husband plays banjo) or relaxing with her hubby on the sofa watching mystery shows on Netflix.
Oh - and reading all sorts of books, but especially cozy and other types of mysteries!

The books in The Emory Crawford Mysteries Series are reminiscent of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple mysteries, which is why Pearl has chosen to characterize her stories as "murder genteel."

NBTM + #Giveaway: Unwrapping a Marriage by Reana Malori and Michel Prince @GoddessFish

Unwrapping a Marriage
by Reana Malori and Michel Prince
GENRE:  Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

What do you do when the love that once set you free, feels like it’s holding you prisoner?

Sterling and Elizabeth Jackson have built a life most would envy. A beautiful home, two wonderful children and a very comfortable lifestyle. Yet something is tearing them apart. With divorce looming, they are trying to make it through the holiday season for their family.

With clashing schedules, demands from employers and two busy kids, the former lovers have managed to stay out of each other’s orbit, at least for a while. But Fate, or maybe their well-meaning family, has set them up on a collision course.

Past memories bubble up to the surface and there’s nothing to stem the flow. What once was amazing has turned hurtful and full of pain. But is that the real story? Is it too late for a couple who once lived and breathed for each other to find their way back?

There’s a thin line between love and hate. Will Sterling and Elizabeth be able to mend a love that seems broken and lost, or will the final pull on the holiday ribbon unwrap their last chance to save their marriage.

Excerpt:

The woman who’d been twitching, smiled broadly and walked out with Elizabeth back into the auditorium. “Thank you so much, I’m Nicole, I haven’t seen you around at the studio.”

Although the woman wasn’t trying to be hurtful, Elizabeth didn’t need the reminder she’d missed ninety-seven percent of Molly’s dancing career.

“You must be Sterling’s wife.”

“Yes, that obvious?”

“Well, walking in with Molly didn’t hurt, but he’s dressed that woman down more than once.”

“And she’s still acting that way?”

“Not to Sterling.” The woman found a spot and stopped. “Plus, when I asked about Molly’s mom he described a no holds barred sexy red head that fools only cross once.”

“He said that?”

“He also said he was a fool who loved crossing you.”

Elizabeth sat by her mother who’d finally arrived and kept her coat over the chair next to her. The curtain moved on the edge and she saw Molly peeking out and scanning the audience. Elizabeth gave her a reassuring smile, but could see the disappointment on her face. A sharp pain stabbed at Elizabeth’s heart as her daughter put on a brave face. How many more moments was Sterling willing to miss in her life? Turning her head, she searched for Sterling in hopes of finding him for Molly, but no—once again, work takes priority.

The lights lowered in the auditorium and Elizabeth looked back at her daughter who’s face lit up like a Christmas tree before going back behind the curtain.

“Here you go,” Sterling said as he picked up Elizabeth’s jacket and passed it to her before sitting down and resting his carry-on next to his seat. “Beth.”

The music started and Elizabeth turned to hear what Sterling was saying. Heat surged through her body. She’d leaned in closer than expected and she ended up brushing her lips against his. Both former lovers froze. Their eyes locked for a moment. Elizabeth held her breath and Sterling’s eyelids became hooded.

“You need something?” she asked in a hushed whisper pulling back just enough to avoid the contact, but not so far she couldn’t still smell his cologne; dark and manly. She’d forgotten how warm it made her feel.

He moved to her ear, this time she knew the graze of his lips wasn’t an accident. “I do,” he replied.

For the first time in longer than she could remember, Elizabeth felt desired. “What would that be?”

“It can wait,” Sterling whispered. “Our baby is coming out.”

Elizabeth’s eyes fluttered as she tried to come back down from the rush of hormones she forgot she had. Sterling drew out the word our and memories of being part of a couple made tears pinprick her eyes. All she needed was contact with Sterling and she’d become overwhelmed by conflicting emotions. Turning her head, she looked down the aisle of seats filled with their parents and son wondering if there was a possibility they could save their marriage. One thing she knew for certain, is they would have to do it. A marriage was between two people, but was the ‘our’ too far gone to save?

An Interview with Reana Malori and Michel Prince

What inspired you to write Unwrapping a Marriage?

Michel - I had watched the documentary Love Between the Covers and there was a set of co-authors there that reminded me of when I was with Reana. I had never wanted to co-write until I met her and when she said yes I was elated. Once we went back and forth on a few ideas the story of what happens after the happily ever after appealed to us.

Reana – When Michel approached me about this story, it felt right. Telling the story of a couple on the brink of divorce was something I’d never done. I was intrigued and excited to tackle this subject. Writing it with Michel was an added bonus. The opportunity to partner with her on a story was an added bonus.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Michel - I started writing stories at five. Opened a library in my room at nine because I seemed to be the only one on the block that had more than two books. I was first published at sixteen for poetry, but then I put away my writing because I didn’t have the best English teachers. My library grew and finally around the time I hit my early thirties I took up my writing again.

Reana – At a very young age I knew that I loved creating worlds and characters, but I never put anything down on paper until I was much older. Creating alternate endings to my favorite movies or books that I’d read had become a hobby. Or I would completely rewrite the book with my own characters into a story that I enjoyed even more. It wasn’t until my thirties that I decided to actually share my internal musings with others and put something on paper.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Michel - I have vivid memories of reading Richard Scarry’s books when I was three. I’d curl up in a basket and read the stories. I was an early reader and was reading Serendipity books by five.

Reana – My family members would read to me at a very early age, even before preschool and I would soak up every word. My earliest memory of reading a book was around seven or eight, but I know I enjoyed books before that. Once I became a teenager, that’s when my true love affair with reading began.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Michel - I love mixing it up, I usually rotate between mystery, paranormal, historical and contemporary. Some are romance, some are not. Sometimes I pick up a YA or NA. I give most books fifty pages or bout three chapters.

Reana – It depends on my mood of the day. I cut my teeth reading historical romances, which I still love to this day. Primarily, I enjoy contemporary romance, sprinkled with some paranormal. As long as the book grabs my attention, then I’m a happy camper.

What is your favorite book?

Michel - That’s hard, Summer Sisters by Judy Blume is one I read when I get stuck. A Separate Peace, Defending Jacob and Master of the Game.

Reana – My Best Friend’s Girl by Dorothy Koomson. It was the book that opened my eyes to the subgenre of Interracial / Multicultural romance featuring women of color. I’ll always love that book.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Michel - I have four Judy Blume, because she has been successful in multiple genres and her stories are timeless. J.R.Ward, no explanation needed if you’ve read one of her books. Sherrlyn Kenyon, again, amazing author with an imagination and worlds I strive for. Darynda Jones, amazing person and an author that makes me laugh out loud when reading.

Reana – that’s such a tough question, because I have a few. Theodora Taylor because her hero’s are the kind of men I love. Dorothy Koomson because she writes stories that don’t follow the typical pattern of a HEA story, but they’re real and true. Bridget Midway, because she brings BDSM to the Multicultural / Interracial book genre in a way that shows the passion, love and lives of the characters. There are so many favorites, this list could go on for a full page.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Michel - As a history major this is really hard for me. I’d love to just cruise through the decades, but there’s a part of me that’s always wanted to go back and meet Laura Ingalls Wilder. Not sure why since I read Maude Hart Lovelace, but if she’s anything like the TV show I know we’d be best friends.

Reana - I love the perceived simplicity of the 1950s and 1960s. I love the method of dressing, the hot rod cars, the music (My all-time favorite movie is Grease!) I love modern day and all of its technological advances, but there’s a nostalgic feeling about that period of time that I would enjoy experiencing, even if for one or two days.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Michel - The dark moment or as Lizbeth Selvig (great author by the way) calls it the too stupid to live moment are hard for me. Those are usually most slow down moments because I just don’t see why they won’t talk to each other. By the time I get half way through a book it does flow well for me. The first half I’m just meeting my characters so that tends to take a bit of time.

Reana – It’s always hard for me. I “think” too much sometimes and can get lost in the explanation of the story rather than the story itself. My characters often dictate how they want the story to flow and as long as they’re talking to me, the story flow is amazing. The sex scenes can be a challenge for me, but I usually do alright. LOL!

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Michel - I have a dog named Bolt, yes he looks like the Disney character and is a total mutt. Kind of resembles a white German shepherd.

Reana – No pets for me.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Michel - I’m a traditionalist, I love a good steak. If it’s made right I’m in heaven. Strawberry shortcake for dessert.

Reana – I’m a steak and potatoes kind of girl. If I could eat that every single day, I would.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Michel - Write for your enjoyment and what you want to read. Not for what’s popular or what you think you will sell. You’ll never get your best work and it will become a job not a passion.

Reana – Write what you love. When the stories are pressing on you, just get them out. Worry about the rest later. Always write for yourself first – if you love what you do, the readers will come.
