Excerpt:

Let’s go to the park,” Nate said.

We walked down the middle of the empty street because the sidewalks hadn’t been cleared yet. The new snow crunched under our boots. Nate put his arm around my shoulders. “Pretty night.”

Pretty, but freezing.” Freezing or not, it was still pleasant to be out walking with him, feeling the icy flick of snowflakes on my cheeks.

After a few minutes, I heard the noise of a car rolling along the snowy street behind us. It was coming faster than was wise, given how slippery the streets were. We moved to the side, but we couldn’t get all the way out of the street because of the drifts left by the plow.

And the car was speeding up.

What the hell?” It wasn’t a car but a pickup with a snowplow attachment on the front. And it wasn’t pulling over to get around us. It was driving straight for us.

Nate grabbed my hand. “We need to run.”

I thought about jumping over the drifts at the side, but they were almost three feet high, and if either of us slipped, we might roll into the path of the truck.

The truck’s headlights were full on, blinding me when I looked backward. My feet kept sliding in the snowy tracks. Nate’s hold on my arm slipped, so that he was holding onto my cuff.

Then I saw a break in the snow drift ahead of us. “There,” I panted. “Go there.”

Nate grabbed hold of me, dragging me toward the space. Then he turned and jumped, pulling me with him. The break in the snow wasn’t much, but it was enough to get us out of the street. I fell to my knees as Nate landed on his back. The truck swerved toward us, and I thought it would keep coming up onto the sidewalk after us. But then it hit the snowbank and bounced away again.

We both lay panting on the snow-covered sidewalk, listening to the truck roar down the street away from us.
