Grace heard the slide before she saw it. The distinctive, grating sound of loose rock shifting under weight, followed by Addy's sharp intake of breath. She spun around. Addy's foot had found a patch of shale that looked solid and wasn't, and the girl was sliding on her hip down the steep gully floor toward a drop that Grace estimated at ten feet, the rock below it jagged and unforgiving.
Siku moved.
The wolfdog lunged from behind Addy and clamped his jaws on the back of her jacket. Not her skin, not her pack, but the thick fabric between her shoulder blades, the scruff-grip that canids use on their young, instinctive and precise. His legs braced against the shale, all four paws dug in, and he held. A hundred and twenty-five pounds of muscle and bone and will, anchoring Addy to the slope by her jacket while the loose rock cascaded past them and clattered over the drop into the gully below.
Addy hung there for two seconds. Three. Her eyes wide, her hands scrabbling for purchase, her feet dangling over the edge. Then Grace was there, scrambling back down the gully, her boots sending shale spraying, her hands finding Addy's arms and pulling, and between Grace's grip and Siku's jaw, they hauled the girl back onto solid ground.
My Review:
The Tundra Passage by K.A. Jarvis is an utterly absorbing read that completely captivated me from page one. Jarvis builds a richly detailed world that I found myself soaking up and wishing I never had to leave.
Although The Tundra Passage is the fourth book in the series, it functions perfectly as a standalone. Each installment features an entirely different cast of characters up against overwhelming odds, so I never felt lost having skipped the first three.
After her mother's passing, Grace was sorting through her belongings when she stumbled upon a piece of paper bearing her father's name. Growing up, Grace had no idea her father was even alive. Intrigued, she searches online and discovers that he resides in Alaska.
Determined to find her father, Grace embarks on a journey that takes an unexpected turn when chaos erupts following a national cyberattack. Her plane crashes on the Alaskan tundra after being shot down.
Now, stranded a thousand miles from home, she finds herself accompanied by a young girl, a mysterious researcher, a wary hiker, and a wolfdog. Together, they must traverse a hundred miles of treacherous wilderness to find safety. The threats they encounter come not only from the harsh Alaskan landscape but also from one of her traveling companions.
