Blurb:
Millie comes to Verano's Spit expecting a short, practical stay.
Sort the estate, finish the paperwork, and leave before winter settles in.
But the cliffside town has other plans.
The house is warmer than it should be. The coffee never seems to cool. The archive, the kilns, the Stair, and the people who move through them all carry a quiet sense of history that Millie can’t ignore. As she uncovers old records, unsent letters, and the town’s long clay traditions, she begins to realize that Verano's Spit is a place that remembers — and that belonging may be more than a temporary arrangement.
Before the First Frost is a cozy fantasy about found family, seasonal change, community, and the gentle magic of ordinary life. Perfect for readers who love low-stakes fantasy, atmospheric small towns, and character-driven stories with warmth at their heart.
My Review:
Millie arrives in Verano's Spit with the intention of a brief stay. She is there to clear out a house inherited from a relative. However, the town seems to have different plans for her.
No sooner than Millie stepped off the boat, it seemed as if the land had its own plans for her—possibly set long before she arrived—or perhaps they started the moment it called her to come.
Upon entering the house she had inherited, Millie immediately sensed that something was amiss. Things were not as they should be. The deeper she investigated the peculiarities, the more the mystery deepened. She soon discovered that a significant event had occurred in the town long ago, one that remained unspoken, a quiet secret among the residents.
One particularly intriguing aspect was the three hundred and twelve steps, the sole access to the town. Millie ascended those steps daily, searching for the source of the town's oddities — conducting her investigation.
The inhabitants of Verano's Spit craft cups and dishes from clay. Remarkably, whatever is placed inside their creations never seems to cool down, maintaining a constant temperature at all times. Could it be magic?
Verano's Spit holds a mystery waiting to be unraveled, and Millie is determined to uncover it before she departs. Yet, the lingering question is — does Millie still intend to leave — have her plans shifted — or has the town altered her intentions for her?
So many questions, so many answers, answers that can only be uncovered by visiting the cliffside town of Verano's Spit in Before the First Frost.
