Interview with Charlie Amos
Could you tell us about any research trips you took for this story? Which places did you visit, and what made them essential to your writing?
This story takes place in an area where I grew up. I did visit the Talbot Research Library and Museum in Colcord, OK to make sure I had the correct names for landmarks at the time the story takes place.
What's the strangest thing you've ever had to research online for your book?
This book didn’t require much strange research. I did enjoy looking up phrases popular in the 1880’s. Such as “Go to your eyeballs!” As a way to tell someone to F off. Or “Hot spit and monkey vomit” to express surprise.
What research (history, mythology, science) goes into your world-building?
With this book being a western the land itself is a character. The landscape has changed over the last hundred plus years. So, it is important to list native plants and ecology common to that time versus today.
Have any of the people you've known, past or present, left a lasting impression on your writing journey? If so, we'd love to hear about a memorable experience that stands out to you.
Mr. Schrader, my middle school English teacher. He encouraged me to write after a short story assignment.
Do you write in the same genre all the time?
Currently, yes.
If so, have you ever consider writing in another one?
Yes. Several different ones.
Which character, supernatural or human, do you enjoy writing the most and why?
The “Little Kansas” character. He lacks confidence but when the moment comes, he doesn’t hesitate.
