Interview with Matthew Miller
Do you have a routine or something you do to get you in the mood to write?
Yes, my routine is like clockwork. I’m most creative in the mornings, before the day gets going. I wake, drink coffee, spend time reading devotionals, in prayer and journaling. Then, I listen for ideas and I allow the creativity to run via conversations with myself or writing. I have to leave some margin in time too. Otherwise, feeling rushed tends to deflate my creativity.
Do you have a special song, drink, or food you enjoy while you are writing?
I like listening to music while reading or painting but not while writing. Coffee is my drink of choice.
How do you know what to write?
It’s a feeling more than a formula. I tend to speak out loud and have mock conversations with myself, listening for cues and ideas.
What does a typical writing day look like for you?
The routine above says it all. It has to start early in the morning. If I’m not feeling it, I don’t force it.
Do you do anything special to celebrate after writing “the end”?
I went to dinner with friends and family after finishing this book. I’m a big believer in celebrating accomplishments.
How long does it take you to write a book?
Probably longer than it should. I tend to re-read a lot of what I write. Once I got in a groove on this book, it took about seven months and I was writing most mornings for about an hour.
What is the most difficult part of writing a book?
For me it was believing that it would be helpful. Hence the reason I probably re-read so much. I want it to be useful and worth the time for the reader.
