Interview with Theresa Rubi Garcia

Do you have a routine or something you do to get you in the mood to write?

Before I write, I enter a state of coherence. I quiet my nervous system, connect my heart and mind, and consciously shift out of effort and into alignment. From there, I pray and ask God to lead my words, my thoughts, and my actions.

I don’t sit down to force writing. I set an intention to become a clear vessel. When I write from coherence, the words arrive with ease, truth, and purpose. My role is simply to listen, trust, and allow what wants to be expressed to move through me.

Do you have a special song, drink, or food you enjoy while you are writing?

I don’t have one specific song, but I’m deeply drawn to classical music while I write. Mozart, in particular, creates a sense of spaciousness and flow that helps my thoughts settle and expand at the same time.

As for a drink, tea is my constant companion. Depending on the time of day and the energy I’m calling in, I’ll reach for a matcha latte or a chai latte, or something caffeine-free like hibiscus orange tea. I also love bubbly water with a splash of lime and fresh peppermint. Each choice becomes a small ritual that anchors me in presence and signals to my body that it’s time to create.

How do you know what to write?

I don’t always “know” in a romantic sense. Sometimes writing is scheduled, and I meet the page because I’ve committed to it. Other times, the writing clearly wants to come through. I’ve learned to honor both.

What guides me more than timing is passion. I don’t write about things I feel lukewarm about. If something moves me, challenges me, or feels important enough to be shared, I pay attention. Even when there are deadlines, I wait until I can connect with the deeper why behind what I’m writing. Once that connection is made, the words find their way.

Writing, for me, is less about waiting for permission and more about listening for what feels alive and truthful. When something has weight and meaning, that’s my signal to write.

What does a typical writing day look like for you?

There really isn’t a “typical” writing day for me. I write in focused windows between life, work, and service. When I sit down, I center myself, set a clear intention, and write with full presence until the message feels complete.

Do you do anything special to celebrate after writing “the end”?

When I reach the end of a book, I celebrate. I’ll take myself out for a beautiful steak dinner, enjoy a glass of red wine, and usually end the night playing pool. It’s my way of marking the moment, honoring the work, and letting the completion fully land.

How long does it take you to write a book?

There isn’t a single timeline for me. My most recent book took about five years, not because the writing itself was slow, but because life was full. During that time, I was navigating a profound personal crisis, raising my son through an incredibly intense season, and running a full-time business with a team and a large client base.

The book was written in pockets of time, in between responsibility and recovery. In many ways, it grew alongside me. The length of time reflects not hesitation, but depth. The story needed to be lived as much as it needed to be written.

What is the most difficult part of writing a book?

The most difficult part of writing the book was getting started. Once I had a clear framework, the process became much easier. Filling in the stories and shaping the narrative felt natural once the structure was in place.

The deeper challenge was emotional. I was writing about my most profound traumas, which meant revisiting and reliving them as I wrote. At the same time, life continued to deliver curveballs, and there was a great deal of chaos happening around me. Continuing to move forward creatively while navigating that intensity required resilience, presence, and deep self-trust. That balance was, without question, the hardest part of the process.
