Interview with Mallory McCartney
What is your favorite part of the book?
Thank you for having me! The Exchange & Other Calamities has a lot of favorite moments of mine- if I had to choose one it would be the significance of the song Hungry Eyes, and that scene in the story Below Lakeshore Lane. I love in horror when something is relatable but then turned on its head- either to become scary or in this case set up a body horror scene.
Does your book have a lesson? Moral?
The Exchange & Other Calamities is a book I wrote in the hope for connection. I live chronically ill, and millions of people do. Millions. I hope maybe after reading this book a reader either feels seen, or if a reader wasn’t aware of what invisible illnesses can consist of, maybe have now they have a better understanding and empathy.
Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
This is my first work where every character in each short story is personal, based off myself and my experiences, as is each story itself.
Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?
This is such a hard decision! From The Exchange & Other Calamities I would have to say that Kinsley Matthews is my favorite. There is so much in me in her. I rebuilt my stamina after being bedridden for a year by walking on our local beach and collecting lake glass. I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, and the fight Kinsley goes through is my fight. Being so intertwined in my truths and experiences, my hopes and fears, my anger- being a reflection of me she would be my favorite.
What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?
Likely Theo- I feel we could binge some horror movies and have a dachshund playdate.
What would the main character in your book have to say about you?
They would say keep going, on the good days, bad days. Just keep trying your best. <3 b="">3>
Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
I’m planning for my horror works to stand on their own with easter eggs in them nodding to past works.
Mallory McCartney currently lives in Sarnia, Ontario with her husband, their dachshunds Link, and Leonard and their sphynx cats Luna, Legolas, Ivy and Lily. When she isn’t working on her next novel or reading, she can be found day dreaming about fantasy worlds or bingeing her favorite horror movies.
