LETTERS TAKE THE LADY

Anna Valleria

GENRE: Historical Romance

Blurb:

Antigone Sprague, the spirited daughter of a gentleman scholar, has no patience for arrogant lords. So when she meets the reserved and bitingly clever Lord Michael Northram, she’s immediately put off by his condescending manner. She has no idea that he is utterly captivated.

Tongue-tied and overwhelmed by a passion he doesn’t understand, Michael can only confess his feelings in secret poems never meant to see the light of day. But when Antigone begins receiving those very poems from a charming and ambitious suitor, she believes she’s found the man who understands her soul. Believing he has lost her forever, a heartbroken Michael accepts a diplomatic mission to America, unaware that the woman he loves has actually fallen for his words.

Years later, his return to England ignites a shocking reunion and an undeniable spark. But their second chance is built on a foundation of lies. When the truth of the letters emerges, it exposes a scheme of shocking deception, and her spurned suitor reveals a desperate and dangerous side, threatening her very freedom. To win her trust, Michael must finally bridge the gap between the poet on the page and the man by her side, proving he is the hero she’s always deserved.

Excerpt:

Although she had never seen a naked man, and she knew she ought to feel embarrassed, she did not look away as a warm prickle ran up her spine. It reminded her of that letter from so long ago… I can never say to how much I want my hands on you and yours on me.

It felt like another one of those moments where she fell out of time, but instead of anxiety, this was a warm dreamlike peace, and so she stood, just looking at him, taking everything in. Polite society would mark her as wicked for not looking away, but somehow society felt a million miles away from this lake, this moment. The man had dark blond hair, and he wore a full beard, which she rather liked, as there was something incredibly rugged about his beard and tanned skin, like he had spent time with the land. The man made no move to cover himself even though he seemed to have noticed her perusal. Water dripped from his beard down his torso, and his chest moved up and down as if breathing deeply. She followed the water down his chest down to the rest of his body, to the decidedly male part of him. Again, she knew she ought to feel embarrassed, but instead she felt curious. Confused. All the pieces of him were so intricate, all sinew and muscle, and her fingers pulsed in awareness. What a strange moment out of time this was, she thought, as her eyes went back to his, and she recognized something familiar in this stranger, for his eyes were so dark she couldn’t tell his reaction to her. She had only known one other person whose eyes were that dark, and he was in America. But, a small voice in her head chimed in, this was his family estate. And she would have been mortified to catch him like this. As realization dawned on her, embarrassment quickly overtook her, and she looked away.
