Interview with Haley Cavanagh
How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?
My first book was published in 2015, and it changed the trajectory of self-doubt for me. After I got published, I believed in myself a lot more and became far more focused than I’d been before.
What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
Well, I grew up a scrappy apartment kid in the 1980s. We didn’t have TikTok or the internet back then. We had to talk to each other, and your social skills were kind of like a currency. I learned early on that the more I read, the better spoken I became, and the better spoken I was, the more people listened to what I had to say. Language is an incredibly powerful tool that is pivotal to develop for everyone, regardless of where they come from.
What one thing would you give up to become a better writer?
Social media. Granted, I have to have social media as a writer to get the word out about my books, but honestly it can be distracting. I would have no problem giving up social media for a more private life and higher quality work.
Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?
I’m a military veteran, a mom to two older teens, and I’ve been married to the love of my life for over 23 years. I am a huge animal lover.
If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?
Ignore the mediocre boy I had a crush on in high school and focus more intently on school work. Hormones get the best of us all, what can I say.
What is the biggest surprise that you experienced after becoming a writer?
How much effort you need to put into marketing and getting the word out. Even with big publishers, these days a lot of the onus is on you to reach out and market your book.
Could you tell us a bit about your most recent book and why it is a must-read?
Yes, I recently published Shadowed Skies with Collective Ink Books. If you love The Hunger Games, the Divergent series, Maximum Ride, and The Maze Runner series, you’ll love this book.
