Interview with Author Danielle Simmons
Can you tell us a
little bit about the characters in Evoke?
Laney is the main character. She has fair skin, green eyes,
and honey colored hair. She is medium height (around 5 “8”) and likes to run.
She is smart and loyal and prefers to be a wallflower while her beautiful best
friend Lisa takes the limelight. She was born and raised in the small town of
Lake Haven, Maine, and from the time she can remember, has been one of a group
of five friends – Lisa, Caleb, Timmy, Evan and her. Laney’s parents are Denver
and Marina Thomas. Her father is an editor at a New York publishing house, and
her mother owns an antique shop in town. She has attended college in Los
Angeles with her best friend Lisa for three years and is home for the summer
before her senior year when the book begins. She is pre-med.
Evan is Laney’s best friend. He is handsome, with brown hair
and caramel colored eyes. He loves baseball, sailing, and is the only son of
Jonathan and Evelyn Davies – best friends to Laney’s parents. He and Laney
share a close bond, and while there are five of them in their group of friends,
he is the one she is closest two. He has always had her back and is fiercely
protective of her. He has attended college on the East Coast for three years
and is home for the summer before his senior year when the book begins. He is a
business major and plans to take over running his parent’s business when he
graduates – Lake Haven’s only hotel, a sprawling seaside resort along Lake
Haven’s beautiful icy blue cove.
Dean Danvers is a former classmate of Evan and Laney’s. He
was two years ahead of them in school. While he was skinny and shy in high
school, being a Marine has turned him into a strong man, with an oppressive
build. He has short buzzed blonde hair, steel grey eyes, and a teeth-revealing
smile that is charming one minute and menacing the next. He had a crush on
Laney in high school.
Can you tell us a
little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
Evoke is one of three planned books. The second is planned
for Spring 2019 and third Summer 2019. After the trilogy is completed, I have
two new novel concepts I would like to flesh out. One is YA/NA fantasy and the
other is women’s fiction, described as a genre bender mashup of The Devil Wears
Prada and Handmaid’s Tale flipped on its head. I also write erotic romance
short stories under a pen name.
How long would you
say it takes you to write a book?
It takes about three to six months. I work full time and
have two kids, so writing is relegated to nights and weekends. I also don’t
outline or sketch out a story, I do stream of consciousness, which could mean
some weekends are productive, while others aren’t so much. I am trying to
change this to maximize my writing time and working on outlines of the two new
novels I am planning to write one EVOKE trilogy is released. I am a big fan of
voice dictation on my iPhone and have been doing this more and more – taking
notes daily for writing – then sending that to myself in email for further
flesh out.
What is your favorite
childhood book?
The Westing Game
If you could spend
the day with one of the characters from EVOKE, who would it be? Please tell us
why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would
do.
I would spend the day with Lisa, Laney’s best friend in the
group of five. I would like to know what it is like to be the most beautiful
girl in the room and how that shapes one’s confidence and insecurities. I would like to know how she handles the real
world when Laney isn’t around to give in to whatever it is she wants.
What was the hardest
scene from EVOKE to write?
The hardest scene was the opening. Trying to describe what
it may feel like to wake up after being in a coma AND make it an experience
that readers would feel drawn into immediately, was extremely difficult. I must
have rewritten it two dozen times, I would probably go back and do it two dozen
more if I could, LOL.
What made you want to
become a writer?
I have always liked to read stories and tell them. From an
early age my nose was in a book.
