Interview with Author R. D. Kardon
As a writer, what would you choose as your
mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
The Unicorn!
How many hours a day do you put into your writing?
That depends on what stage of the process I’m in.
Generally, when I’m writing a new novel, I’d say two to three hours a day. Right now, I’m revising my second novel, and
some days I put several hours into actual revisions, and on other days, I may
spend an hour or two researching.
Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what
you write in the future?
Flygirl is my
debut novel, so, yes, I’m reading the reviews!! Since my second novel is at the
revision stage, I am particularly interested in hearing what readers have to
say about my main character, Tris Miles.
Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few
people will find?
Indeed I do! That’s part of the fun! In Flygirl there are several references
that are targeted toward specific people.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Flygirl?
The main character, pilot Tris
Miles, is 35, a small-town girl who lost her father at an early age and was
raised by an emotionally absent mother. She’s ambitious- Tris worked as a
teacher for ten years and flying is her second-career. Tris is motivated by her
own goals, of course, but also by past failures and a deadly mistake she made
with someone she loved and lost.

Danny Terry, a captain at the commuter airline Tris is
flying for at the beginning of the book, is in love with her. He’s her best
friend, and wants to be more. But she’s still hung up on Bron, her
ex-boyfriend.

Ed Deter is an ex-Navy pilot with an axe to grind
against female aviators. He loves his wife Gerri, a woman who supported his
military and flying career. He mostly cares about his own professional
advancement, and is angry when his company not only hires Tris and inserts her
into his perfect flying world, but ties a promotion he wants to her success.

In the beginning, pilot and co-worker Larry Ross looks
like he’s going to be a strong ally for Tris. But he has his own serious
problems, both at home with his increasingly dissatisfied wife and internally
via a growing substance abuse problem.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have
planned for the future?
My second novel has a tentative
release date of mid-2020. It follows Tris’s career, and delves more deeply into
her goals, motivations and relationships. She’ll face life-threatening
challenges.
Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you
write as long as the words come?
Great question. I write as long as
I have something to say. As long as I’ve met whatever my daily goals are
(finish a chapter, write a certain amount of words) when I’ve come to the end
of a thought, I’m done.
Do you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?
Particularly when I’m writing a
first draft, yes, I have daily word targets. I write my first drafts in
Scrivener, so it’s easy to track those targets.
What inspires you to write?
I write because I have something I
want to say.

About the Author
Robin "R.D." Kardon was a litigation attorney before beginning a twelve-year flying career as a corporate and airline pilot. She holds an Airline Transport Pilot certificate and three Captain qualifications. Her travels took her all over the world in every type of airplane from small single-engine Cessnas to the Boeing 737. Robin earned her B.A. in Journalism and Sociology from NYU and J.D. from American University, Washington College of Law. A native New Yorker, Robin now lives in San Diego, California with her beloved rescue pets. , a work of fiction inspired by her own aviation experience, is her first novel.
