A NECESSARY LIE
by Lucy Farago
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Pub Date: 7/27/2017

The Investigative Collection Unit is one of the world’s most renowned agencies, solving cases with—or without—the law on its side. And the Unit’s men are special agents in more ways than one, with secrets that can make or break them—and the hearts of those who fall for them . . .

He’s known only as Cowboy. A successful rodeo star with a string of women behind him, the ICU has given him a chance to stay put instead of constantly running away—from the past, from love, from the blood on his hands. And he’s not going to screw that up, even if it means going back home to Texas to investigate the disappearance of the woman who made him start running in the first place . . .
The political exposé of a popular senator should have been Grace Irvine’s story, but she thought it would be good for her best friend Jessie’s career. Now, Jessie is missing and Grace will do anything to find her. But her path keeps crossing with a mysterious and charismatic cowboy who has his own reasons for finding Jessie. And as intrigue draws Grace and Cowboy deeper into danger, passion starts to play by its own rules—making promises it might not be able to keep . . .

Lucy Farago knows there is nothing like a happy sigh at the end of a good book. With the encouragement of her loving husband, she wrote her first manuscript. An unpublished historical, it sits in a file on her computer, there to remind her how much fun she had learning the craft and becoming part of an industry whose books make you believe anything is possible. A big fan of Agatha Christie, she set out to write her first romantic suspense novel. Thrilled to be a published author, Lucy also teaches yoga, enjoys cooking, and saying what other people are thinking. In her fantasy world, her beautiful Siberian husky, Loki, doesn’t shed and her three kids clean up after themselves . Alas, that fantasy will never see fruition.

Virtual Tour + #Giveaway: The Legend of Queen Agatha by Sam Cunningham @GoddessFish

The Legend of Queen Agatha
by Sam Cunningham
GENRE:   erotic fantasy/political allegory

BLURB:

In the mythical, medieval land of Xana, Queen Julia ruled as a typical aristocratic monarch in a country whose great wealth was concentrated among the privileged few.  Her  daughter, Princess Agatha, was the champion of the commoners.  The evil sorcerer Magi comes to Xana to kill Queen Julia and ravage aristocrats and commoners alike.  Princess Agatha alone is spared, for she is protected by her fairy godmother.  Now the beautiful heiress has two challenges, first to rid Xana of Magi and then to lift all the commoners from poverty into prosperity.  To achieve her first goal she must identify her handsome prince incognito in the crowd on her first try.  She won't have a second chance.  To achieve her second she must invent and use radical political schemes even if not all her people approve.

Excerpt:

Elias was an important member of the Queen Agatha's council of advisers, perhaps second in the whole country behind the queen.  The queen caught him embezzling royal funds.

Elias was shaken to his very core by Queen Agatha's response.  He expected a reprimand and perhaps a mild fine, but instead, she brought him before a huge crowd assembled below the palace balcony and publicly humiliated him.  She proclaimed, "Twice you came to me, not to serve our people but to enrich yourself.  You will apologize and give back to the people everything you have as atonement and compensation."

Elias cried out to the people of Xana.  "I have done wrong.  I have taken that which I did not earn.  I am sorry.  I will return it all to you.  I promise never again to violate my queen's trust."

"You will give everything you have to the people," announced Agatha.  "You will give all your land, your property, your possessions, and even your clothes.  You will keep only the clothes you are now wearing.  Everything you have will be sold at auction.  I shall use the money to find more teachers.  They will teach arithmetic to all the people of Xana so that they understand contracts.  No one can shortchange them again as you have done."

"Everything but the clothes I am wearing?" whimpered Elias.

"Everything," responded Queen Agatha, as Elias was led away, crying.  "You leave in disgrace.  May you one day regain your honor with service, humility, frugality, and generosity to your people."  Agatha repeated, "And generosity."

All the wealth that he had accumulated in a lifetime disappeared in a flash.

Interview with Sam Cunningham

What inspired you to write “The Legend of Queen Agatha?”

I have a rich imagination and scenes keep popping into my mind. For “The Legend of Queen Agatha,” I envisioned a beautiful and compassionate princess whose people are being ravaged by an evil sorcerer. She can save her people, and become an enlightened queen, only if she identifies her handsome prince incognito in the crowd on her first try. Unlike many of the scenes that appear to me, I kept adding more and more details, one sentence or phrase at a time, and decided to write them onto a computer file to save them and share with the good people of our world.

Can you tell us a little bit about the next books in (Name of book or series) or what you have planned for the future?

Maybe, if the first has some success in the marketplace, I’ll ask my own question to the readers: Would you like to learn about more of Queen Agatha’s adventures?

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in ‘The Legend of Queen Agatha?”

Queen Agatha is the most beautiful woman in all her land. She is compassionate about lifting all of the poor commoners in her land into prosperity. She can discern the true character of any person as soon as she meets her or him. Though kind and gentle, she has an authoritarian streak, does not tolerate bad behavior and does whatever is necessary to stop it immediately and permanently. She expects her orders, always for the welfare of her people above herself, to be obeyed.

Pedro Mendez is a humble, illiterate glassblower whose insight into people and events in his country is second only to that of Queen Agatha. As a man also of impeccable personal honor and honesty, he becomes one of Queen Agatha’s most trusted and valued advisers.

Anya Mendez, who married Levinsky, is Pedro’s fifth child. When Anya is only four years old, Queen Agatha tells her father, “Anya is a precocious child. She is destined for achievement beyond anything we can now imagine.” Throughout the novel we watch Anya developing as wise Queen Agatha had foreseen.

And then there are the villains. Magi the Sorcerer uses his spells to kill Queen Julia, Agatha’s mother, ravage the land, steal all the wealth of aristocrats and commoners alike, and inflict hunger, disease, and crippling upon the people. King Ibris of Mardon leads a large army and fleet to invade Queen Agatha’s country, steal and carry home the wealth of Agatha’s people as well as many of their women to become sex slaves for his soldiers. His greatest craving is to make Queen Agatha herself sexual playtoy.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

The science fiction writer Robert Heinlein is my favorite author. He creates strong and forceful characters and exciting adventures. The background of space travel and time travel goes beyond what we can now achieve in the real world, but it fills with wonder my imaginative spirit.

If you could time-travel would you travel to the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why would you like to visit this particular time period?

We are blessed to live in a time with the least hunger, least disease, greatest literary collection, greatest scientific and historical knowledge, and greatest ease of travel of any time in the history of the world.  I am grateful to live in this time, and would not want to go back to any time in the past. I, like many of you, are worried about troubles ahead in our world. But I am optimistic for prosperity to return in the more distant future. I would like go to this future age of prosperity when the collection of fine books, historical, and scientific knowledge is even greater than it is today. There would be so much to learn.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I like dogs, cats, and pet birds, and am friends with the pets of my neighbors as I am with my wonderful neighbors themselves. But I don’t want the added burden of caring for animals in my own home.

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us today.

AUTHOR BIO:

Sam Cunningham is a small college physics teacher.  He knows from personal experience with his pupils that through nurturing nearly all young people can become productive citizens.  It is an overwhelming tragedy that so many poor children are not given this nurturing.  Their personal loss, and the loss to their country of their productive ability, is a catastrophe.  As a scientist he understands that critical thinking and the ability to follow where the evidence leads are the only reliable ways to understand the real world.  Away from work he leaves the real world of hard evidence to read science fiction and fantasy.  His favorite childhood movie was the Walt Disney 1950 cartoon of Cinderella, and he greatly admires strong women.  Sam brings together all of these ingredients in this story of a princess who becomes a wise and inspired queen with a personal mission to achieve productivity, prosperity, and happiness for all of her people.

Book Blast + #Giveaway: The Good Spy Dies Twice by Mark Hosack @markhosack @GoddessFish

The Good Spy Dies Twice
by Mark Hosack
GENRE: Thriller

BLURB:

"The Good Spy Dies Twice," the cryptic final words from a condemned death row inmate draw Jake Boxer, the one-time king of cable news, out of retirement, setting him on a collision course with a deadly global conspiracy involving his secretive wife, a depraved New World Order, and the "guests" at a posh Alaskan ski resort. Everyone is a suspect. Part spy thriller, part whodunit, "The Good Spy Dies Twice" is the first book in Mark Hosack's explosive new thriller series, Bullseye. Called "an undeniably spry and rousing espionage tale" by Kirkus Reviews.

Excerpt:

Panting (he was an audio guy, not an athlete), Brody reached the fence. He put a hand on it and felt his arm spasm uncontrollably in one long, sustained, hot pulse.

The same type of electric shock that had knocked him off the second fence was once again rushing through his fingers and into his arm. He crumpled to the ground with a new, yet familiar, scream on his lips. Luckily, he fell backward, and the weight of his body jerked his hand away from the fence, breaking the electrical current.

Lying in the snow, his arm shook violently for several seconds, and Jesus, his heart—it was skipping beats like a rock skimming a lake. He looked back at the fence. It was just fifteen feet high, and slouching in parts where the support poles were bent, or in some cases missing. It was old, a relic of a bygone era. Totally unassuming.

Or so he’d thought.

Somehow, there was now electricity coursing through it, electricity that hadn’t been there when he’d first scaled it, just minutes earlier.

Someone had turned on the juice, and that meant someone was watching him.

When he first parked his car, he’d counted two fences from the road.

Two fences between him and the rumored Soviet installation.

No problem, he’d thought. The fences were falling apart—he could easily climb them. But now here he was, stuck in between them. Like a rat in a cage.

With his stomach in his throat, Brody cradled the audio recorder.

Okay, so he’d recorded a sound that just might change the world, but as several headlights appeared in the road just beyond the now-electrified fence, as dark silhouettes of bulky Russian men poured out of the cars and hurried through the snow toward him, he found himself asking a much more personal question:

Was it also a sound worth dying for?

Blog Tour + #Giveaway: These Ruthless Deeds by Kelly Zekas & Tarun Shanker @KellyZekas @tkshanker @XpressoTours

These Ruthless Deeds
Kelly Zekas, Tarun Shanker
(These Vicious Masks #2)
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: March 14th 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Paranormal, Young Adult

England, 1883. Still recovering from a devastating loss, Evelyn is determined to use her powers to save other gifted people from those who would harm them. But when her rescue of a young telekinetic girl goes terribly wrong, Evelyn finds herself indebted to a secret society devoted to recruiting and protecting people like Evelyn and her friends.

As she follows the Society’s orders, healing the sick and embarking on perilous recruitment missions, Evelyn sees her problems disappear. Her reputation is repaired, her friends are provided for, and her parents are newly wealthy. She reunites with the dashing Mr. Kent and recovers the reclusive Mr. Braddock (who has much less to brood over now that the Society can help him to control his dangerous power). But Evelyn can’t help fearing the Society is more sinister than it appears…

Excerpt:

As I thought about how to begin, I finally understood why Sebastian had been so awkward when he tried to explain everything about these powers to me. It was a ridiculous thing to tell someone. With her pragmatic nature, there was only one way to convince Catherine. The same way I had been convinced.
“Catherine, I am going to show you something very strange. You must promise not to scream.”
Her round eyes narrowed. “I never scream.”
I padded over to my writing desk and took up a letter opener, shiny and new and quite sharp. I sliced it across my index fingers. I thought it a small slit but there seemed to be enough blood to alarm Catherine, as she gasped and came over.
“Evelyn! Why would you do that?” She pulled out her handkerchief and hurriedly grabbed for my finger, but I pulled away.
“Just watch,” I said, taking a moment before wiping the blood off and showing her the healed finger.
She stared at it, frowning, at a loss for words, then searched my eyes. “Are you playing a trick on me?”
I shook my head and put the letter opener down. “No trick. No joke. I know this sounds utterly mad, but while I was trying to—to find Rose, these few months past, I discovered something else. I can heal any wound, any illness in me or others.”
Catherine stared hard at me, looking for a laugh that wasn’t there. “Evelyn, I’m sorry, but you must be mistaken; this is impossible.”
“You try doing it to me,” I said, handing her the letter opener, which she reluctantly took while protesting.
       “This is silly—”
I grasped her hand with the letter opener, pressed down hard, and dragged it across my palm. Blood dribbled out onto the rug and I winced more at the mess than the light stinging. I was getting better with pain. I’d tested my healing quite enough these last months.
With a gasp, Catherine dropped the letter opener and fumbled again for her handkerchief.
I stepped out of her reach and simply wiped away the blood so she could better see the miraculous healing.
“This sort of cut usually takes a few seconds,” I said. “Just watch.”
She did. She watched as the blood flow ebbed and my torn skin gradually closed and stitched itself back together. Besides the faint bloodstain, there was no sign my hand had even been cut.
“Good morning, miss.” A knock came from the door—my maid. I shoved my hand behind me and positioned my feet over the bloodstains.
“Come in,” I called, eyeing Catherine warily as she stared into nothing with a rather dazed expression.
Lucy opened the door and set down a tray. A long moment of silence reigned as she turned, curtsied, and shut the door. I decided to let Catherine continue her contemplation as I wiped the rest of the blood onto my handkerchief and poured the steaming chocolate into the two cups the maid had left.
I almost moaned after the first sip. If my parents were going to use their new wealth, I had to be glad for their cook.
Catherine didn’t move for a long while. Then she pinched herself. “I . . . am having a lot of thoughts and questions right now.”
“I imagine you must be.” I poured myself another cup and led her to the chairs in front of the fire. “I will tell you everything. First, have you ever heard of something called ‘saltation’?”
And so I explained. The theory that these powers were a jump in evolution. Dr. Beck, his associates. The people—good and bad—who had helped me. Mr. Braddock and Miss Lodge.
Catherine began to pace the room as I haltingly finished explaining Rose’s death. She poured me another cup of chocolate and sat next to my chair, on the floor, as I told her about Belgium, Emily Kane, and the Society of Aberrations.
As if on cue, a slight crackling sounded and a piece of paper appeared in my hand. I opened my palm and Catherine gasped.
“This must be from them—our rescuers from the asylum,” I murmured to her. I unfolded the note to read the short line. We would be so grateful for your assistance, Miss Wyndham. There is a sick little girl who does not deserve to die. Please meet Mr. Redburn in your back garden as soon as you can. It was signed by Captain Goode.
“Was that—did someone just . . . ?” Catherine was peering around the room suspiciously. We both jumped as a knock rattled at the door.
“Come in,” I said, crumpling the piece of paper and shoving it behind me.
Lucy entered. “Um, miss, there is a Mr. Kent downstairs and he—well, he said to tell you that if it is at all inconvenient he is happy to come up here.”
I rolled my eyes. “I apologize. He thinks himself very amusing. Please tell him Miss Harding and I will be downstairs shortly.”
She bobbed a curtsy and left. I moved the gaudy fire screen and threw the missive into the flames. The sick girl was surely some play on my sympathies since their other approaches hadn’t worked. I had told them I did not wish to be involved, and uninvolved I would stay.

“Catherine, will you help me dress?” I asked, taking off my wrapper. “Oh, and I should probably tell you, for all the time we’ve known Mr. Kent, he’s had the power to reveal anyone’s secrets.”

Author Bio:
Tarun and Kelly met in a freshman year writing class at NYU and started writing These Vicious Masks a few years later.
Tarun is a writer living in Los Angeles whose idea of paradise consists of kung-fu movies, David Bowie and chai tea. Since completing his first horrible screenplay in high school, he’s written everything from one-act plays and film criticism to humor pieces and strongly-worded emails. He’s also magnetized, crushed and burned the hard drive where that first screenplay can be found.
Kelly is a writer and actor living in NYC. YA is her absolute favorite thing on earth other than cupcakes and she has spent many hours crying over fictional deaths. She also started reading Harlequin romances at a possibly too early age (12?), and still loves a good paperback romance.

Excerpt:

Two arms stretched out to either side of my head, hands against the wall, blocking me in, and the whole situation made my heart pound so loudly that I heard it in my ears.

“Who the hell are you really?” Finn’s harsh whisper came out of the dark, and I was both scared and thrilled at the same time.

“What? I don’t know what you’re asking?”

“I’m asking you to tell me who you really are and why you’re here?”

I glanced to my right. Down the hallway, I could make out silhouettes of decorative pictures and a small table with a vase at the end. My breathing had become rapid, but I didn’t want him to know just how rattled I was.

“Is this how you spit game, son? Because it might be time to work on your finesse. It kind of sucks.”
He leaned in closer, until I had to turn my head back toward him, and I didn’t dare focus anywhere else but directly at him. I could feel the heat coming off his body, and I had to wonder where this was going.

“Time to get serious. Who…are…you?”

How did I tell him who I was without telling him who I was? I had amnesia after all…at least as far as he knew.

“My name is Cara. I mean…I might have a brother, and I might have spent some time in California. That’s all I know for sure.”

He growled low. “I don’t know whether to rip you apart or…kiss you breathless.” He moved even closer, his lips only inches from mine. “For some reason I can’t fathom, I’m drawn to you.”

I pulled in a quick breath at his surprising confession. Well, helllooo, unexpected! The nervous energy in my body began pinging like spilled ball-bearings rolling out of control. Was he closer still? My heart pounded rapidly as I felt my face flush. It felt like a kiss was imminent, and I couldn’t decide if I was turned on or freaked-the-hell-out.

My Review:

A curse was placed on Carrasandra Reed when she was a baby and she has had to do things that she doesn’t like doing all her life. In order to break the curse Cara must find a stone that belongs to a witch in Assjacket, West Virginia. The only way Cara knows to do this is to fake having amnesia but her plans may not work as this one guy a panther/shifter Finn doesn’t trust her.

Cara is very determined to find the stone, take it and leave but this is turning out to be one difficult task to complete as she gets to know Evie, Celia, Liz and Finn she is not sure she can go through with hurting them to save herself. But the choice may be taken from her hands anyway when she can’t find the stone. What is a girl to do?

Cara is a very strong person with a very big heart for someone who has grown up with a curse on her head. Cara has had a hard time dealing with her curse when it comes to doing things she knows is not right or will hurt someone in the end. She is learning to listen to her heart more.

You know I have enjoyed reading about Cara and her curse and how she has learnt to go past her curse to feel and think for herself and not let the curse control her life completely, to tell her what is right and wrong in her heart.

Show Me the Wicked has been a very enlightening experience in some ways. I like the idea that a “curse” can control people to an extent but when the heart becomes involved then it is not so easy to control them anymore. Not that I ever agreed with it but I like the concept which can be an eye opener to some; that we can overcome some things that we are taught.

Show Me the Wicked has been refreshing and an eye opener and I would like to recommend it to anyone who loves to read about witches and paranormal creatures with a little humor and a little love on the side.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

It all started with an old fashioned typewriter. When my family brought it home, I knew what I wanted to do. All those stories rolling around in my head could finally get out. The press and click of the keys were satisfying in their own right, but when I pulled out a finished page, I knew this was for me. Since then, I’ve graduated to a laptop, but the stories still find a way out.

I’m a breast cancer survivor, a teacher, a wife, a mother, and from the very beginning—a storyteller. Always a hint humorous and honest to a fault, I love to make people laugh, smile, and have “a-ha” moments. My goal in life is to achieve tact and stop procrastinating. The battle wages on.

Excerpt:

He touched my chin with two fingers, bringing my gaze up to meet his. Damn those green eyes. I searched them for answers, wishing I knew whether he was putting on an act for the audience. Even with the lights off, the cameras stationed in the yard would capture us. The producers filmed everything, day and night. Everyone in America would know if we kissed. For a moment, I struggled to remember why that was bad.
“I guess it’s not your fault, since I got the question right,” I said begrudgingly, shifting slightly backward.
“If that is the best I can get, I’ll take it. But I’m going to work on complete forgiveness. I’ll pay you double interest on our bet—six cents.”
“Well, then,” I laughed. “Maybe I’ll have to reconsider once I get my money. I’d hate to have to send Birdie to break your kneecaps.”
The image of five-foot-tall Birdie coming after Justin with a baseball bat cracked him up. I laughed, too, crossing my legs and settling more comfortably in the lounger. My knee practically touched Justin’s leg. He didn’t move.
We sat quietly for a few minutes. I wondered if he heard my heart pounding. Even not wanting to get caught kissing on national television with a near-stranger, I found something about Justin irresistible. Possibly his smile. Or his dimples. His brains. The ease of talking to him. His personality. The fact that he was practically perfect for me in every way.
That line of thinking wasn’t helping. I needed to change the subject before I started calling him Mary Poppins.
“It’s a beautiful night.” I gestured at the sky.
“Yes, it is,” Justin said, his eyes never leaving my face. Did he lean forward slightly? Only inches separated our lips.
The warmth definitely wasn’t the beer. I licked my lips nervously and leaned in, closing the gap. If he moved the tiniest bit…
“So—”
