Young Adult Sci-Fi
Date Published: June 1, 2016

Save the girl.
Save the day.
Save yourself.

The mission sounds easy enough, but it is anything but easy for Parker Jenkins. Yesterday, ordinary, poverty-stricken Parker was an ordinary high school kid, getting bullied relentlessly and trying to get by. Today, he's a time traveler with gifted powers expected to carry out the extraordinary. Teaming up with another time traveler, Scarlet, they must save an innocent girl on the run before the villains kill them all. If they don't, their present-day selves will die. But can the ordinary perform the extraordinary?

My Review:

Parker Jenkins is just your ordinary high school boy who is picked on every day by the school jock, Travis. Parker is in love with Travis’s girlfriend Clara and is always lusting after her and Travis is always sending him to the school nurse for looking at her.

Parker has a rough home life too. He has an abusive stepdad and his mother has never been the same since they lost Parker’s dad a few years back. With her having to work all the time just to make ends meet and to keep food on the table for all of them it has all made her a very bitter person.

Parker has two great friends from school, Douglas and Kimi. They are always taking up for Parker but it doesn’t do any good. Douglas and Kimi are picked on as well and are part of the school’s outcast.

One night after taking one of Travis’s “beatings”; Parker goes to bed and falls “asleep” and wakes up in Tokyo. Parker has no idea what is going but he comes to the conclusion that the only thing that it could be is that is dreaming. Yeah that is it. But the girl, Scarlet that he has met keeps insisting that it is not a dream and that it is all real. She keeps trying to convince him that he has time traveled just like her. Parker being the inquisitive nerd that he is has a lot of questions for Scarlet but she keeps telling him they don’t have time for that.

Scarlet explains to him that when they time travel they have a mission to complete and they only have a certain amount of time to complete said mission. This time they are sent to save a little girl, Tora from some very bad men. Parker wants to know who Tora is. Who are these bad men? And what do they want with Tora? Along with numerous other questions of course which gets on Scarlet’s nerves but that is just Parker always wanting to know what is going on and what everything is.

But once Parker gets to know Tora he still has all these questions and then some but he has now become quite taken with little Tora and has step up a notch or two from the picked on kid at school to one that stands up to the bad men to protect a defenseless little girl.
Infinite Time was a very interesting read unlike any that I have read before. The characters were quite loveable each in their own way. Well except for the bad men that is. But bad men are what make for a very good read. You know good versus evil kind of thing that balances everything out. If you have not read Infinite Time then I would like to recommend that you do. If you like time travel then this is the book for you. So pick up your now!

Book Blitz + #Giveaway: Singapore Secrets by Irene Onorato @IreneOnorato @XpressoTours

Singapore Secrets
Irene Onorato
Publication date: April 17th 2016
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Secrets . . .

Angry because her father, Louisiana Senator Jacob Windsor, has announced his engagement to Hollywood starlet Kara Bordeaux, Julia Windsor decides she’d rather leave home than be subjected to heightened security and a deluge of paparazzi. She travels to Singapore, severs all communication with those she’s left behind, and chooses to live a life of anonymity.

When Julia meets handsome Gabriel Davenport, she keeps her true purpose for being in Singapore a secret. The friendship that develops quickly evolves into something much deeper.

Julia marvels that she’s traveled halfway around the world to find love with an American man. But will that love endure when she discovers that Gabriel is a former Special Forces sergeant hired by her father to protect her?

—

EXCERPT:

“How could you even think of doing this to Mom? Or to me?” Julia Windsor folded her arms and turned her back to her father. An opaque curtain of tears blurred her vision. She would not cry. Not here, not now.
Her father stroked her bare upper arms. “I loved your mother with all my heart, but she’s been gone eight years. Don’t you think she’d want me to be happy?”
The sweet, consolatory tone of her father’s voice couldn’t ease the pain his shocking news inflicted. Her heart couldn’t be more shattered if it were made of glass. She shrank from his touch and stepped forward. “Why’d you have to ruin everything and ask Kara to marry you?”
Gentle hands guided her shoulders back around, cupped her cheeks, and lifted her face. Sadness filled her dad’s beautiful eyes—eyes the color of an azure sea on a cloudless day. “I love you, Jules.” A wistful smile barely lifted his lips. “And I love Kara too.”
Julia tried to pull away.
Her father held fast. “You’re twenty-three…hardly a little girl anymore. You’re a beautiful and intelligent woman. When you least expect it, a man will come along and capture your heart. You’ll be consumed with thoughts of him and him alone.” He smiled a little bigger. “Maybe then you’ll understand how I feel about Kara.”
Julia pushed his hands away. “I can’t deal with this. I just can’t.” She ran out of her father’s study, up the staircase that curved around the grand entryway, and hurried into her room. The click of the door latch triggered an avalanche of tears. Julia sat on the bed, took the framed picture of her mother from the nightstand, and held it on her lap. “Why did God have to take you from me? Who’ll primp my gown and fluff my veil on my wedding day? Who will I call when my baby gets sick in the middle of the night and I don’t know what to do? Oh, Mom, I miss you so much.” She hugged the portrait to her chest and wept more.

EXCERPT:

“In the vision, I was sitting on a bench,” says Jomeini, her eyes distant. “The sunlight beat warm against the stone I sat on, but the wind that blew was brisk and harsh. A storm rode on that wind, a storm I knew I wouldn’t be able to stop. Afterwards, I drew this.”
Jomeini pulls another card from beside the others and hands it to Shasa.
“It’s a coat,” Shasa says, confused. She traces a finger over the handless, headless trenchcoat, drawn as though it’s blowing in the very wind Jomeini claims she felt during its vision.
“I assumed it meant that I wouldn’t be comfortable in my home much longer, that I would need protection from whatever storm was riding on that wind. I assumed it meant that Grandfather was taking me from my refuge, my home in Xavienke, and that I would need to find protection in Valadir. And it did, in a sense. But the drawing was also literal. Whose coat do you see?”
Chills brush across Shasa’s skin. “Color it yellow, and that could be Craven’s.”
Jomeini rubs her arms as if chafing away whatever memory fills her mind at that moment. Shasa wonders if it’s the same one she’s recalling, the sight of the dingy yellow trenchcoat Craven wore the day he snatched Shasa from right in front of the Triad Palace into an abandoned building and stole her magic then and there.
“What does the star mean, then?” Shasa asks. When Jomeini doesn’t answer immediately, Shasa continues thinking aloud. “Stars provide light in the night sky. They’ve held their places for years, giving sailors something to sail by.”
“But this one is a shooting star,” Jomeini says. “This one is setting off on its own course.”
“And you think it pertains to Tyrus?”
Jomeini shakes her head. “I thought so at first. I Saw Tyrus, yes. But I Saw others with him. Among his soldiers was a blonde woman I didn’t recognize.”
“A group of stars,” Shasa says inwardly. “With one straying from all the rest.”
“It means change is coming, and someone is at the center of it. I thought it was Tyrus, but now I’m not so sure. See the other star beside this? See how the bursts on the star go one way, so it looks like the star can be spearing to the left? But if you look at it this way…” Jomeini turns the card until it’s upside down. “Now the star could be shooting to the right.”
“So Tyrus isn’t leaving?”
“Not in so many words. It’s more complicated than I can explain, but something Tyrus is going to do will be as vast as the effort of crossing an ocean with no other guide but the stars. It’s going to change the world as we know it. And depending on what we do, that change is going to veer the races one way or the other. For good.” She holds the star picture one way. “Or for ill.” She turns it the other direction.
Shasa swallows and takes the card, experimenting. The star’s direction turns with each flip, more indecisive than the weather. It’s like the picture of a smiling man with a furrow in his forehead her mother used to draw. She would turn it upside down, and though the picture hadn’t changed at all, the man would look sad and menacing instead. All because of one or two carefully placed lines.
“So how do we get this change to veer in the direction we want it to go?” Shasa asks.
Jomeini doesn’t answer. Instead, she fingers the collar at her throat. The two girls sit in the boat in silence, bathing in the deep wake of their thoughts.

Guest Post:

The real-life location that inspired Genesis Girl

I live in Edmonds, Washington, a stone’s throw from Seattle and in view of the Olympic Mountains, aka the Cullen hunting grounds from The Twilight Series. Washington is called “The Evergreen State” for a reason. Douglas firs, hemlocks, big leaf maples; everywhere I look I see trees.

But when I was writing Genesis Girl I was most inspired by the ten years I spent living in the Bay Area of Northern California. There, in the heart of Silicon Valley, I studied at Stanford University and became a third grade teacher. Everyone around me got high paying jobs in the tech industry, but my first teaching assignment was in East Palo Alto, the former murder capital of America.

The disparity between rich and poor is something that has always stayed with me. There’s not a rich/poor divide in Genesis Girl, but there is definitely a contrast between people who are consumed by technology and those who shun it. Probably that’s a reflection of my long ago third grade classroom that didn’t even have one computer. Forget books and information; our school’s library had burnt down.

Blanca, my main character in Genesis Girl, lives her whole life in the Silicon Valley yet she never gets to access the riches around her. She can’t make new discoveries on the Internet, because she has no access to technology.

I set the Sci-Fi world of Genesis Girl about fifty years in the future, but if you drive down Highway 101 from San Francisco to San Jose you’ll see a similar divide between people whose lives are enriched by new innovations, and those who are subsisting on the crumbs of the Silicon Valley elite.

The next time your smart phone freezes it up and you curse it for not being the latest generation, consider this. My third graders back in East Palo Alto would probably think your crappy old iPhone, was pretty darn cool.

EXCERPT:

A pair of startling green eyes caught his and Dean felt like he’d been kicked in the gut. His heart thumped heavily in his chest as little pin-pricks of awareness washed over him and he found he had trouble breathing. His muscles tensed even as his body hardened and began to throb painfully. He bit back a curse. He’d never had such a reaction to a woman before in his life.
Her gaze flicked between him and Nick as he brought up his I.D. and made the introductions. The woman nodded and stepped back, allowing them to enter. She closed the door firmly and turned to face them, her expression fraught with worry.
“I know who you are. I just got off the phone with Amelia. She told me you’d be coming,” she said, twisting her fingers together anxiously. When she caught him watching, she stuffed her hands into her snug jeans. “I’m Megan Bailey.”
He gave her a slow onceover, unable to help himself. He was curious about this woman and the overwhelming desire he had for her. The entire world seemed to melt away until all that was left was her.
She was beautiful in an understated way with a honey complexion and a small dusting of freckles on the bridge of her nose. Rich mahogany hair had been pulled back into a messy ponytail. She wasn’t overly tall, the top of her head only reaching his shoulders, but she was nicely filled out with curves in all the right places, her breasts high and full beneath her shirt, which clung to her like a second skin revealing her tucked in waist and the flare of her hips. He swallowed hard, his mouth suddenly dry.
As if sensing his perusal, Megan glanced over at him and his knees weakened. Her eyes—those gorgeous emerald pools—pulled at him, so full of torment that his heart ached. Shit, this was crazy and so unlike him.
She blinked and he heard her sharp exhale, her mouth parted, and she looked so irresistible that he was sorely tempted to cross the short distance between them and find out if she tasted as good as she looked. He was at a loss, unable to pull away as she continued to stare at him. Was she feeling as out of control as him?
He forced himself back on track. He was here to work a case, not look for his next bed partner, and while Megan was quite delectable, she would hardly do. She wasn’t the type of woman a man fooled around with unless he had forever in his mind, and Dean Matthews didn’t do forever. No matter what his body was telling him.
He certainly wasn’t sex-starved, although it had been a while since he had hit the sheets with a woman. The case was taking up all his time, and he couldn’t think of anything else even when he had a rare moment alone to sleep. It was disconcerting and he wasn’t sure he liked it, bringing about feelings he’d long ago rejected.

EXCERPT:

“We’re not—you don’t really—we can’t be—”
“Married?”
She laughs, but it’s a brittle sound. “Come on. We didn’t actually have a wedding last night.”
“We didn’t? You’re sure?” I perk up. Great. She remembers last night. I squeeze my eyes and try to recall something—anything—that happened after Declan and Shannon said their goodbyes at the reception last night.
“I’m, well, I mean…” Twisting in my arms, she looks at me with those big, wide, trusting eyes, her left hand splayed against my bare chest, digging in where the robe has separated. “You don’t remember what happened?”
My voice drops with uncertainty.
Hers goes up.
“No.”
“Quit joking.”
“Not joking.”
“We both can’t remember any part of last night?”
“When does your memory end?” I ask.
Mascara is streaked along the corner of her eye, and any makeup she wore last night currently resides somewhere on my skin or on the bedsheets. I can only imagine what I look like.
Amanda, though, is gorgeous. In my arms and looking at me with a perplexed expression, biting her lower lip while she flips through the filing cabinets of memory in her mind, and—
“I don’t know.”
I sit up. “You’re the fixer.”
“I know! But I remember saying goodnight to Shannon, hugging Declan, and then—poof! Nothing.”
Poof.
“That’s when my memory ends, too,” I say, my skin beginning to crawl. “I know one thing: we did not have a foursome.”
“And I soooooo did not sleep with Josh. He’s gay. The man can’t handle watching a birth video. A real-life vagina would send him into cardiac arrest.”
“I know my heart pounds whenever I see yours,” I whisper. She gives me a reluctant smile, in spite of her hangover.
“That was baaaaaad,” she groans.
“All signs point to the sex question being put to rest. Worst case, all we did was sleep with each other,” I note.
“Worst case? Buddy, sleeping with me is best case. Best case. Always best.”
That was an unfortunate choice of words on my part. Before I can do damage control, she speaks.
“What if we are?” she hisses.
“Are what?”
Her eyes dart to mine.
“Married.”

Virtual Book Tour + #Giveaway: This Madness of the Heart by Blair Yeatts @blair_yeatts @GoddessFish

This Madness of the Heart
by Blair Yeatts
GENRE: gothic mystery/thriller

BLURB:

Bad religion can be deadly. So Miranda Lamden, small-town religion professor, discovers in This Madness of the Heart. The dark hollers of Eastern Kentucky offer fertile soil for shady evangelist Jasper Jarboe, new president of Grace and Glory Bible College, as he beguiles the small mining town of Canaan Wells with his snake-oil charm.

When Miranda isn’t teaching at Obadiah Durham College, she’s investigating paranormal phenomena—or enjoying a turbulent romantic relationship with backwoods artist Jack Crispen. JJ’s inquisition-style gospel has alienated her long since, but when he announces his plan to transform her forest home into an evangelical Mecca, complete with neon cross and 40-foot Jesus, Miranda girds her loins for war. But JJ isn’t finished: he goes on to launch an attack on her friend and fellow professor Djinn Baude with an avalanche of vicious rumors. Not only does he accuse Djinn of demonic communion with the old Voudon witch whose curse killed the college’s founding family, but he also smears her with insinuations of lechery and vice.

With JJ’s urging, hate boils over into violence and tragedy, sweeping Miranda up in its flood. One death follows another as a miasma of evil overwhelms the tiny community, and only Miranda can see clearly enough to halt its spread.

This Madness of the Heart is the first in a new series of Gothic mystery-thrillers featuring Professor Miranda Lamden, whose spiritual gifts have drawn her beyond university walls to explore the mysteries of other world beliefs. Her unique vision brings her into repeated confrontations with evil, where too often she finds herself standing alone between oblivious onlookers and impending disaster.

EXCERPT:

The night turned around her, until, in the darkest watches before dawn, she rose from her knees, abandoning the bloody altar with its guttering candles. A queen entranced, she paced slowly down the hill toward the sleeping house, her eyes blind with visions. Through the front door she walked, into the hall’s center, to the foot of the great staircase. There she raised her bloody hands and cried aloud in a high-pitched wail, sinking at last to a low hissing hum.

“Guede-z-araignee! Come a-hungered! Drink di lifeblood o’ dis evil man! Drink he mem’ry away! Tak he woman int’ di night, Tak’ he chillun, tak’ dem all! Tak’ dem int’ di darkness! Tak’ dem all—tak’ dey lives, tak’ dey bodies, tak’ dey souls! Gi di blood o’ di murderer no rest, not in dis life, not in di next. Spill dey blood on dis bloody land! Come, Guede-z-araignee! Come an’ drink!”

Like a snake swaying on its coils, a tendril of smoke emerged from the darkness, swelling and growing, rising and twisting toward the upper floors of the plantation house. Tiny rainbow-hued flames licked at the polished floor. Then, with a screaming roar, fire like a spider’s bloated body engulfed the great hall, swallowing the keening woman and gathering the curving staircase to its tumid breast. A billowing inferno exploded into the long upper halls, curling and crisping the fine imported wood, sealing bedroom doors with sucking flame, feeding on the agonized cries within: a holocaust offered to a vengeful deity, sated at last with the charring bodies of the landowner’s family... the whole family, save one, a tiny boychild, carried sleeping from his father’s house by an old black nurse, terrified by the fiery havoc she had witnessed in her dreams.

Author Interview:

What inspired you to write This Madness of the Heart?

I’ve loved mysteries all my life, beginning with Mary Stewart’s long list of romantic suspense novels. I read them over and over again, battering the books into fragile pulp, probably beginning even before my teens. Then there was Agatha Christie, and all the many other British women of mystery. My favorite among them was Dorothy L. Sayers, with her character Harriet Vane. More recently, Nevada Barr and Charles Todd have been favorites. I think it was inevitable that I’d finally write a mystery of my own: they’ve been my favorite down-time reading all my life! Madness in particular is my response to greedy and power-hungry “Christian” evangelists. It’s admittedly over the top . . . vengeful ghosts don’t play much of a part in most charlatans’ life stories. But I believe that there’s often more than we realize happening beneath the surface where evil is present.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve tried to answer this question several times now, and I really don’t know the answer. I made up stories about my tiny stuffed animals when I was 6 years old, and was invited by teachers to share them with other primary classes on a regular basis. I read voraciously, and I know I wrote as well, but there are many years where I just don’t remember doing it. Maybe it was because my school skipped me ahead a year from 3rd to 4th grade. I recall life being very tough there for a while. I wrote my own romantic fiction as a teenager, but never showed it to anyone, and won a prize or two for writing in local competitions. But I didn’t realize that I desperately wanted to be a writer until after my children were born, and I was teaching college religion classes . . .

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I must have been three or four, because the first book I remember reading was my brother’s 1st grade primer (in a house we moved out of when I was 4), with major characters Dick, Jane, Spot, and Puff. I still have almost perfect visual recall of the book: cover, illustrations, and all.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Mystery-thrillers and fantasy are my favorite genres—not surprising, since I’ve chosen to write gothic mystery-thrillers! I’ve spent most of my life studying and reading non-fiction, and teaching religion courses in college, and I’m burnt out on non-fiction. I like fiction with substance and depth, but it also has to create a world where I’d like to live. Unremitting violence and ugliness put me off. Choosing books is like eating food: you’re likely to become what you read.

What is your favorite book?

As long as I keep reading, I’ll keep discovering new favorites, or at least I hope I will. They change with the years, and I don’t think there’s ever been just one. Dorothy L. Sayers’ Gaudy Night is an enduring favorite: brilliant characters, suspense, violence, hate, romance, and redemption—they’re all there. Charles Williams’ Descent Into Hell is another . . . it’s a cautionary tale about self-absorption, with intermittent paeans to human spiritual potential. Lois McMaster Bujold’s Paladin of Souls. Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Other Wind.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Oh, dear. Again I have favorites plural, and like books, they change as I change. Also, different authors appeal to different moods, different moments. But if I had to choose one lifetime favorite it would probably be C.S. Lewis, because I still reread all of his fiction every couple of years—and have been doing so since my teens. He reinforces my belief in the essential goodness, spiritual richness, and meaning of the universe, without being obnoxiously proselytizing or pious—or androcentric. He has his issues, but so do we all.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Arthurian Britain, definitely! I’ve had a lifelong love affair with Arthurian literature, from Mary Stewart’s Merlin books to The Once and Future King and Camelot, Mists of Avalon, and on and on. And that’s only the mainstream popular fiction. Then there are Prophetiae Merlini, Gregory of Monmouth, Black Book of Carmarthen, Morte d’Arthur, Tennyson, and so on. I suspect the reality might something far less enchanting, but you never know. To actually glimpse that age in person and know would be worth any amount of danger and disenchantment!

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Yes. LOL Sometimes when I write it’s like riding the crest of a wave. Nothing can stop the flow. Of course, there’s the inevitable letdown when your nerves are suddenly scraped raw by the return to the gritty reality of the here and now, but it’s worth it. And then there are the days of plodding trial and error, when nothing comes easily and everything feels trite and hackneyed. I find that the trick is to keep going—unless I reach the point where it all seems like garbage and I have the overwhelming urge to hit “secure empty trash”! Then I’ve learned to just close the file and walk away. I can usually tell when I first open a book file in progress if I’m going to have to deal with revulsion. It’s probably just a matter of my own moods. But eventually I hear the book whispering to me again, and I go back.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I’m a dedicated servant of cat-kind. I have two rescue cats, who spend much of their time taking turns on my lap while I’m writing—until they get too helpful and start chasing my fingers across the keyboard. They both stay with me in my office most of the time when I’m writing. They have cat runs above my desk, and beds in strategic places all around. They’re the models for the two cats in Madness, Shiva and Shakti:

Shiva scowled up at me with his sleepy green eyes, his thoughts needing no translation:
“Leaving again so soon?” he groused. I walked past him, running a hand down his orange back, and he hooked a claw into my finger in response.
“Monster!” I growled. “You need an attitude adjustment.”
That’s what I got for naming a tomcat after a god whose most conspicuous activity was dancing the universe into bloody chaos and destruction.
Shakti looked on unconcerned, only curling more tightly into her stripy grey ball. At least when she was in a bad mood she kept it to herself.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Shaken lemon pie (that’s custard with tons of rind), fried Calamari (with all the crunchy little legs), and Maine lobster-pound fare: steamed clams and lobster, with deep-dish blueberry pie.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

If you love it, fight for it. If you really are a writer at heart, you won’t be happy if you don’t write—and in the end it’s the writing that matters, not how many books you sell. But you have to keep at it, hour after hour, day after day, in fine weather and in foul.
