Blog Tour: Kindar's Cure by Michelle Hauck @Michelle4Laughs @MkgConnections #Giveaway

Kindar's Cure
by Michelle Hauck
Published July 30th 2013

by Divertir Publishing

Book Blurb:

Princess Kindar of Anost dreams of playing the hero and succeeding to her mother’s throne. But dreams are for fools. Reality involves two healthy sisters and a wasting disease of suffocating cough that’s killing her by inches. When her elder sister is murdered, the blame falls on Kindar, putting her head on the chopping block.

No one who survives eighteen years of choke lung lacks determination. A novice wizard, Maladonis Bin, approaches with a vision—a cure in a barren land of volcanic fumes. As choices go, a charming bootlicker that trips over his own feet isn’t the best option, but beggars can’t be choosers. Kindar escapes with Mal and several longtime attendants only to have her eyes opened that her country faces dark times.

Her mother’s decision to close the prosperous mines spurs poverty and joblessness, inciting rebellion and opening Anost to foreign invasion. As Mal urges her toward a cure that will prove his visions, suddenly, an ally turns traitor, delivering Kindar to a rebel army, who have their own plans for a sickly princess.

With the killer poised to strike again, the rebels bearing down, and the country falling apart, she must weigh her personal hunt for a cure against saving her people.

EXCERPT:

“Princess Kindar, Her Majesty will see you,” a chamberlain barked from her mother’s bedchamber.

Kindar strode forward alone. As the door closed after her, she sank into a deep curtsey before moving forward to the center of the room. Empress Eugenie Stefanous sat before a large mirror, clothed in her undergarments. Seventeen when her first daughter was born, the empress was still young, her belly and hips pleasantly rounded. Her auburn hair fell in a thick mass of long curls around a delicately painted face.

After bearing three daughters, Empress Eugenie had retired her husband, not wanting to ruin the fortunate omen with another child. Now she confined herself to her own amores. The empress’ two current favorites lounged on a chaise. Young enough to be her children, they sported more paint than their mistress. Kindar pushed down irritation that these wretches sat while she must stand.

Behind her mother, the First Minister Hayden wore a military uniform which had never seen a day’s fight. He held a sheaf of papers from which to report his latest information. Information his extensive team of spies provided. “… and the disposition of the Cushwair rebels remains unchanged.”  Minister Hayden cut off as he saw her, stooping to whisper into her mother’s ear.

Eugenie lifted her eyes to Kindar’s reflection in the mirror. “I hear your humours are clean this morning, Daughter.”

Suddenly, answers clicked in Kindar’s mind. The physician had been suggested by Minister Hayden as punishment for failing to show him favor. Kindar narrowed her eyes. From such men as this, her mother sought the advice that would dictate her children’s futures. But this meant her mother might be well-disposed toward her. Her optimism grew to a painful intensity. After all, Eugenie needed all three daughters to give weight to the omen. Kindar curtseyed again. “Yes, Majesty.”

“Strange.” The empress turned her eyes from contemplating her own face in the mirror to favor her daughter with a glance. “Your humours are seldom clean.”

“It is more auspicious for the wedding, Majesty, if I’m not bled.”

“Perhaps.” Empress Eugenie set down a thick rope of diamonds and picked up a necklace of pearls. “That gown doesn’t suit you. You look like a scrawny washed-out rabbit. Why did I ever choose it? Never mind, I suppose it will do for you. I have made a decision about your future.” The minister bowed, looking suitably impressed.

“Yes, Majesty.” Kindar waited with a fluttering heart. The throne could not belong to an unmarried woman; the law made that clear. In addition to making her a legitimate heir, a betrothal would give her certain freedoms, such as the end of these painful morning visits. Even if she did not care for the peer chosen by her mother, a betrothal would give her status. She would be higher than Ceria, instead of equal, and able to overrule her actions.

Character Interview:

Name: Callie, Calla Lily

Age: 17

Appearance: Long blond hair, blue eyes. In a perfect world, where Reflection Pond was made into a movie, Annasophia Robb would play Callie.

Personality: Reserved, quiet, shy, with a short fuse ignited by fear. She’s had a hard past that makes her hesitant to trust people or rely on them. She has a soft side that longs for magic and kindness. She believes that she can leave her past behind and make herself into a new person, if only given the chance.

Here is Rowan’s (the male main character) first impression of Callie:

It wasn’t because she was pretty—of course she was, beauty was a given in Eirensae. Sometimes he longed for the diversity of the human world, where no one was glamoured to perfection. He wanted scars to map out a history that actually meant something. Flawlessness turned his stomach.
The girl’s arched mouth fell into a gasp as she looked up at the glamoured ceiling. A blond cascade of hair skimmed over her shoulders as she leaned farther backwards, trying to take it all in.

Rowan didn’t believe a single word that came out of her mouth. He couldn’t lie, but he didn’t think she was like him. It didn’t matter if she looked like Sapphire. Lots of girls had blond hair and blue eyes. Lots of girls were beautiful. It didn’t mean she belonged here. No one fell through the pond by accident.

And an excerpt from Callie:

She must be crazy, going through with this party. Callie pressed her fingertips to the mirror, half expecting her hand to disappear through it as she saw in the movies. Maybe she was dreaming. Maybe she’d fallen asleep in Nate’s bed and created another reality so she wouldn’t have to face the real one.

When she was little, back before she’d realized that the world was an awful, cruel place, Callie had dreamed that her mother was a princess. She’d drawn pictures of castles sparkling with jewels and white knights on horses. She convinced herself that one day, a carriage would come for her and never look back. Then she’d been placed with the Johnson’s and Callie had lost all hope.

And maybe she was crazy, but was it so wrong of her to be curious? To ask, what if? She glanced again at her reflection. They’d pinned flowers in her hair and covered her eyelids with glitter. Maybe she wanted this.

Maybe this was the most excited she’d been.

Ever.

Callie’s interview. This takes place just before Reflection Pond, when Callie is a foster child.

  1. If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?
Read. The best way to escape your life is to take on someone else’s. I can be anyone as long as I’m inside a book.

2.                   What impression do you make on people when they first meet you? How about after they’ve known you for a while?

I think I come off as quiet and maybe a bit standoffish. It’s not that I’m trying to be that way, it’s just hard for me to trust people. I don’t have many friends and very, very few people know what really happened to me. Fosters are like that. You can’t hold too tightly to anything, because tomorrow it will be taken away from you.

3.                   What’s your idea of a good marriage? Do you think that’ll happen in your life?

            No. Just no.

4.                   What are you most proud of about your life?

My ability to blend in. Inside, everything is a mess, but on the outside you just see a girl who is making it through every day. Maybe I don’t smile enough, but no one is looking hard enough to notice.

5.                   What are you most ashamed of in your life?

Not being able to defend myself. If I were stronger, I could’ve had a different life.

6.                   If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

Joan of Arc. Not only did she have visions of the future, but she used them to change history. She had to convince people she wasn’t a heretic, and though she eventually died for her visions, she brought about great change in a small amount of time. She was strong and brave, living in a man’s world, and that’s the kind of person I want to be.

7.                   Do you think you’ve turned out the way your parents expected?

I have no idea. I’ve never met my parents, though when they gave me up, I hope they didn’t expect me to have so many foster homes.

8.                   What do you believe about God?

I’ve never been very religious. Once, I lived in a home that required us to go to church. It seemed to me that God was just an excuse people used to do things. You can get away with nearly anything if you claim you did it in the name of God.

9.                   Is there anything you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t done? What would happen if you did it?

I want to get out of Pennsylvania, and I will, as soon as I turn eighteen. I’ve got enough money saved for a bus ticket. Florida, California, New York. I don’t know where I’m going, but I know I’m leaving. What would happen? I don’t know. That’s the best part.

10.               What’s the worst thing that’s happened in your life? What did you learn from it?

            I’m not answering that.

11.               Tell me about your best friend.

I don’t really have a best friend. I guess it’s my boyfriend, Nate. He’s the only person who’s put up with me for this long.

12.               What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done to someone? Why?

The worst thing I’ve done? Being born. Obviously I was a burden to my parents.

13.               What would you like it to say on your tombstone?

That’s cryptic. My name, I guess.

14.               Describe your ideal mate.

Mate? You’re kidding, right? A book. A book is my ideal “mate.”

15.               What are you most afraid of?

Being unable to defend myself. Being trapped.

16.               What’s the most important thing in your life? What do you value most?

Freedom. Well, I’ll value it when I have it, anyway.

17.               What do you like best about yourself? Least?

I’m determined, it’s probably my best quality. The least? My fear.

18.               How do you feel about your life right now? What, if anything, would you like to change?

I feel like I’m stuck, but only for a little while longer. Like I said, eighteenth birthday, bus ticket, sayonara Pennsylvania and being a foster.

19.               Are you lying to yourself about something? What is it?

Lying? I’m not much of a liar, I prefer to omit things. If I ignore it, it doesn’t really exist.

Excerpt:

"Aldan, bring wine!"

Aldan stopped polishing the brass lantern in his hands and hung it back on its hook. Wine? In the middle of the day?

A watchful silence fell over the pirates on deck. Captain Rozar rarely drank and never before nightfall. Aldan turned to see what held the crew's attention and noticed a tiny sailboat approaching from the west.

Rozar glared around at his men. "Get back to work, you lot." The captain's attention swung back to the sailboat. Scar, the first mate, was out of sight. Aldan took the chance to linger near the hatch.

The craft drew up along Cathartid's port side, and a stranger in riding boots and a green tunic climbed the ship's ladder, greeted the captain like an old friend, and spoke near Rozar's ear. A wicked smile bloomed across the captain's face.

Aldan slid down the ladder without touching the rungs and hurried to fetch wine and two goblets on a tray from the galley. Biscuits, the cook, delayed him with questions, but Aldan broke away, promising to talk later. He reached the captain's stout door and listened hard. The door masked most of the words, but they were speaking in Marstan instead of Norlan. He knocked on the door, waited for Rozar's answer, and swung it open.

"Ah, Aldan. Come in, come in." Rozar laughed and rubbed his palms together.

Aldan set the tray on the captain's table and backed into the corner to watch, as stealthy as a ship's rat, taking care not to rap his head against the angled beams.

Rozar poured a liberal amount of wine into each vessel. "Join me in a toast, my friend." "With pleasure," Green Tunic said. He took the proffered drink and waited.

"You've brought me the best possible news at exactly the right time." Rozar set aside the flagon and lifted his goblet. "To Fortune! May she shine as brightly on you and me as Sol shines today."

"Hear, hear," Green Tunic said, lifting his glass to touch Rozar's. "To your success."

Rozar took a long sip. "Mmm," he murmured.

Wait until Sam and Linus heard about this. Aldan dug his bare toes into the captain's prized silk rug and relished the cool sea breeze flowing through the open porthole. He studied the stranger, memorizing every detail. A golden wolf's head adorned his uniform's left breast. What was the man's name? If the stranger was Rozar's friend, why hadn't they seen him before?

Rozar took another swig of wine and thumped his goblet down. "Please, sit with me a few moments before you cast off again." His dark gaze darted to Aldan, and he snapped his fingers. "You. Out. Wait outside the cabin door until I call."

Aldan bowed himself out of the cabin and pulled the door closed. He didn't dare listen through the keyhole. No news was worth a thrashing. He put his back to the beam across from Rozar's cabin and listened to the sounds of the pirate ship and her crew.

Cathartid creaked and groaned around him, complaining about being too close to land when she could be hunting in the Great Gulf. A shadow fell over him, and he ducked in time to avoid Scar's beefy fist.

"You got time to stand around, do you? I know you have work to be doing, you layabout." The first mate grabbed Aldan's wrist and gave it a vicious twist. "Well? Why are you still standing here?"

"Captain Rozar's orders," Aldan said through gritted teeth. He met Scar's bloodshot eyes glare for glare. Every detail of the mate's disfigured face sprang into sharp focus, including Azor, the alligator god, tattooed on his cheekbone.

"Oh, that's likely." Scar gave his arm a wrenching yank and let go. "You know Marstan. What did they say?"

Aldan shook his head. "They drank a toast to Fortune, and Rozar told me to get out and wait here. That's all I know."

"Don't know much, do you?" Scar spit at his feet.

Aldan didn't answer or move a muscle.

"Stupid slave." The first mate turned on his heel and ascended the nearby ladder to the deck above.

Aldan checked both ways before he grimaced and rubbed his throbbing wrist. A whisper of sound captured his attention.

Linus emerged from the space beneath the ladder. He wore unrelieved black. Combined with his ebony skin, his clothing acted like camouflage in the ship's gloomy interior.

Linus paused, tilting his head to listen. "That one is the son of a devil," he said.

Aldan nodded. "His mother was a squid."

"Indeed." Linus gestured to Rozar's closed door. "No news?"

"Not yet. Rozar's half-crazed, he's so excited."

His friend heaved a solemn sigh. "Someone will suffer."

"Better clear out before anyone sees you, Brother." But Linus was already out of sight, gone without a sound.

Excerpt:

Fear cured most things. Hunger, thirst…hope. It filled me up until it ate my insides, burrowing deep into my psyche to remind me I was a piece of shit.

A failure.

I left them there, killed a mother and her child because I wasn't strong enough.

My eyelids, heavy and thick, refused to lift, forcing me to see their faces-Cara and her precious baby girl screaming for us, needing us. And we just left them. My mind replayed the same image of those lights swallowing them up, disintegrating them to ash.

Wake up!

My eyes shot open and pain lanced my brain. The static was gone, but the memories of it a dull, throbbing reminder. I tried to breathe, but panic forming in my throat made it difficult to do properly. Hyperventilating created clouds of dizziness. I tried to get up, but slammed back onto a floating surface as soft as velvet. When my movement made the swaying worse, I rolled to the edge of a bed and released all the dried apricots and fish from my stomach.

A bucket scooted under the vomit stream, the heaves so violent I almost fell to the floor. Warm hands held me up and pulled back my hair as I emptied the last of my stomach's contents, leaving a hole so big I wanted to disappear in it, escape everything.

Sobs filled the room, distant at first, but then blaring right inside my head, almost as loud as the Guides' attack. Moisture coated my face, coming from my eyes, my nose…my mouth. I couldn't do it anymore

I couldn't.

"Shhh…I'm here, you're safe."

Familiar safety of soft arms held tighter, the smell of vanilla pushing past the pain.

Wilma.

I clung to her, not opening my eyes again, not wanting to face reality. Ever. She didn't force me and held on until the very last sob escaped. Until nothing was left.

I wanted to go home, forget everything.

I killed them.

My head stayed nestled in the crook of her arm. She rocked me, stroked my hair. Said words I didn't bother to try to comprehend. I cleaved to her voice. Too much. All of it had become too much. I couldn't deal anymore.

Take me home!

Oblivion rescued me again. This time, blackness gave me peace.
