My Review-

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Princess Ophelia Dacre is not your ordinary princess, one who thinks she is better than most folks especially the poor people. No Princess Ophelia is a very nice and sweet young lady who cares about everybody. But she doesn't like to follow rules, rules that she doesn't agree with at least. The King Ophelia's father has arranged her marriage to Prince Astin. The only problem Ophelia has with this arrangement is the fact that she doesn't love the Prince and she doesn't like people controlling her life and bossing her around. She may not like all the rules that are assigned to her but she does try to follow them and do what is required of her unless she doesn't agree with them.

Ophelia has a secret; she sneaks out her bedroom window at night to go meet her boyfriend Larkin. She even keeps secrets from Larkin too. He doesn't know that she is the princess. Ophelia has not told him because she is afraid of losing him if he knows the truth. Not that he would break it off but he would probably want to go tell her father how much he loves her and her father would more than likely lock her up in the tower and throw away the key. Anyways he would find a way to stop Ophelia from seeing Larkin no matter how much he hurt his daughter. The royal family has a reputation to follow and live by, of course. One night when she is out with Larkin at a pub she has to go to the outhouse but before she reaches the outhouse she murdered.

Ophelia is given a choice to either move on or become a grim reaper. She chooses to be a grim reaper. She then becomes Leila, the reaper of souls. Leila has a lot of rules that she must go by as a reaper but she doesn't like following rules no better now than she did when she was Princess Ophelia and alive. She has a lot to learn as a reaper but she has a wonderful group of Reapers to teach her all the ropes of being a reaper. When Leila gets her first reap she finds out that it is not exactly what she thought it would be. Actually she never really gave any thought to what being a reaper meant. The only thing she was thinking about at the time was finding out who killed her. Leila decides that she doesn't want to be a reaper any longer. Her understanding of being a reaper means that she is killing people and she wants no part of that.

Leila meets other reapers that teach her a lot about being a reaper and the rules that she must follow. They also become her friend and help her when she needs it or gets herself into a bind. Leila likes all of her new friends especially Wynter whom she comes to care about a lot and who also cares about her. Wynter and Leila have a special kind of relationship. Does Leila find out who killed her? Will she ever learn to accept the choice she made? Will Wynter and Leila fall in love? If they do will they ever tell each other how they feel? To find out the answers among other things you will just have to read Dead Girl Walking of course.

Dead Girl Walking is not the first book by Ruth Silver that I have read and I hope that it won't be the last. Every book by Ruth Silver that I have read I loved so when I saw that she had written another book I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I didn't even have to read the summary to know that it would be a great book. If you have not Dead Girl Walking then my opinion is that you should read it asap along with her other books as well like the Aberrant Series and Orenda they are just as amazing as Dead Girl Walking.

Life on Hold
By Beverly Stowe McClure

Blurb

A paper found. A secret revealed. A girl's life changed forever. Myra Gibson's life is a lie. For sixteen years her parents have kept their secret, but the adoption paper she discovers while cleaning the guesthouse tells the truth. As the past and present collide, Myra finally stands up for herself and begins a journey she may regret.

Praise for Life on Hold

All I can say is wow! Beverly Stowe McClure knocked this one out of the ballpark. The story of Myra and her search for the truth touched upon one of the fundamental needs of all children (and teens): the need for a father in their lives. ~ Darby Karchut, author of the Griffin Series and other books for tweens, teens, and adults.

McClure exhibits rare talent in this story which follows a young girl on her journey to discovery as she struggles to be true to herself in this compelling coming-of-age novel. ~ Children's Literary Classics Book Reviews (Silver Medal Winner 2012)

Teen readers can easily relate to Myra's pain and rebellion. Part coming of age, part teen romance, "Life on Hold" is full of surprises. ~ Peggy Tibbetts, author, editor, and associate producer.

Excerpt

As we drove to my house, I gazed out the car window. The moon, hazy around the edges, hung in the sky. Stars smiled down. The evening with Jeremy had been fun, like before his trouble, before KW, before I defied my mother. I tried to hold the happiness of the past hours in my mind, but a sour lump clogged my throat. Shivering, I rubbed my arms. I was as bad as Rachel, thinking only of myself, unconcerned about my mother's feelings, ignoring the fact she'd worry if she got home before I did.

"You want me to turn off the air conditioner?"

Jeremy's voice startled me. My thoughts had wandered. Lately, the past kept intruding in my life, making it difficult to concentrate on the present. I looked at Jeremy, who was looking at me, a thin wrinkle between his eyes. "What?"

"You've got goose bumps."

I stared at my arms. Tiny bumps dotted them, yet sweat dampened my palms. "I'm okay," I said, as okay as I could be, considering I'd hung up on my mother, considering I was with Jeremy.

On the plus side, I was enjoying myself, except for the unwelcome phantom face haunting me every time I blinked ¾ KW. He would not go away. I wanted Dad to be my dad. He wasn't, at least not my birth-dad. Since he wasn't really my dad should I keep calling him Dad? Father? Or was Neil better? What about Stepfather? Why was it so hard to make decisions?

Excerpt:

"You can lean on me," Jackson says.

"I-"

"Lean on me." Not an offer this time, an order.

I scoot over and lean my weight against his arm.

"Not like that." He shifts both of us around until my back's against one side of his chest, my head lolling sideways onto his shoulder, our legs stretched out in front of us, side by side. Not perfect on the comfort score, but better than it was a minute ago. He rests his chin lightly on the top of my head and tells me, "Sleep."

"What about you?"

"I'll keep watch. I've been doing this long enough that I don't need rest while we're on a mission."

"What about Luka and Tyrone?"

"They won't need to rest, either. You're still getting used to the jumps. By the next mission or the one after that, you'll be like us. A robo-soldier." And there it is again, that thread of humor, like he's laughing at himself.

"Is that supposed to reassure me? 'Cause I gotta tell ya, thinking about upcoming missions doesn't exactly thrill me."

I jump when his hands settle on my shoulders. Then I sigh as he kneads my muscles. Long fingers. Strong hands. Some of my tension slips away.
