Excerpt:

"These graphics suck," George says and I look back at the screen. We're standing in the middle of the Estate, colorful orbs quivering ahead of us. We each have to choose our starting advantage. Waterfalls shimmer in the distance and the sunlight streams over multicolored stones in the courtyard.

"Amateurs," Lanyon concurs. "I mean, they couldn't have five waterfalls?"

"Your ironic wit is mind blowing, but choose your damn orbs," I tell them. I consider. Magic, defense, offense, stealth, and charisma. I always go for magic as a black mage, but I wonder if a druid needs something else. Screw it. I need charisma in real life, too.

"Charisma?" Lanyon asks. "No one ever picks charisma."

"We're a party of a thief, druid, and a bard. We're screwed regardless."

"You two underestimate the mighty power of my lute," George argues.

"Did you start with charisma?" Lanyon asks.

"Hell, no. I have charisma in spades. I started with stealth."

"Great. A stealthy bard," I sigh.

"She's right," Lanyon concedes. "We're screwed."

However, it actually isn't bad at all at first. We power through the Estate and make it to the Yobanaria Dale with no resurrections and all at level ten. I'm impressed. George hasn't actually fought anything, but he has some pretty awe-inspiring charm mastery already. I think I might have a serious crush. He seals the deal when he buffs my hailstorm spell without even being asked.

"Can you guys watch El Thiefelo? My mom wants me to eat supper," Lanyon says.

"Yeah, we've got it," I tell him. "The first boss is in the elven ruins anyway, so we should grind a bit. I think he's a twelve."

George and I explore the Dale, taking out bats and Joba spores. It's fairly quiet, except for when we combo with his charms and my spells and he yells out, "Eat lute, bitch," but it's nice. We work well, almost inherently understanding each other. I've never been able to play this effectively with anyone. I try not to think about his eyes. Stupid boys, being cute and stuff.

By the time Lanyon comes back, we're all at level 12, although Lanyon leveled up just by standing by a door while we played. Still, we are ready to take on Balsa the Proud. As a black mage, it took me about nine seconds. Trees don't like fire. However, druids don't have the same level of black magic and all elemental magic is weakened by the need to draw from the elements nearby. Sadly, trees seem to avoid storing fire runes in their villages. I expect this to be a little more challenging. It might even take fifteen seconds.

"First boss. Also known as the freebie bitch to sucker the young folks into a false sense of security," Lanyon announces as he runs into the center of Balsa's lair. The cinema plays and then, in a moment of pure absurdity, El Thiefelo is squished as Balsa steps on him.

"Can someone revive me?" Lanyon whines.

About The Authors:

Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She's written works in various genres - romance, erotica, fantasy, horror. Genre isn't as important as telling a story about people and how their lives unfold. Sarah tends to focus on YA/NA characters but she's been known to shake it up. Most of her stories are about relationships - romantic, familial, friendly - because love and empathy are the foundation of life. It doesn't matter if the story is set in contemporary NY, historical Britain, or a fantasy world in the future - human beings are most interesting in the ways they interact with others. This is the principle behind all of Sarah's stories.

Sarah has spent most of her life in school, from her BA and MA in English and writing to teaching both at the high school and college level. She also loves studying art history and really anything because learning is fun.

When Sarah isn't writing, she tends to waste a lot of time checking Facebook for pictures of cats, shooting virtual zombies, and simply staring out the window.

She has written several books, most notably Bitter Fruits, an urban fantasy in the Eden's Fall series, and the six-part New Adult contemporary Flowering series. Her most recent release is Primordial Dust, a YA fantasy.

Pete Clark likes writing, animals, potato chips, and cheese. Midnight Riders was his first published novel, although he can also proudly say he finally finished Helix Crashing, the fantasy novel he has been working on for over a decade. In addition, he has written Across the Barren Landscape, a collection of linked Western short stories, and Tales from Midnight's Graveyard, a collection of non-linked horror, science fiction, and fantasy stories. He also writes plays, both dramatic and comedic.

When he is not writing, Pete tends to ignore everyone around him and obsess over sports.

Available from:
Amazon * Barnes & Noble

Excerpt:
Bethany places her elbows on the table and reaches for some chips. "I don't know what to do. I mean…I just…I liked him and I thought he liked me. So, I went back with him. I'd had a little bit too much to drink…and God, he smells like Heaven."

I roll my eyes. "You want to try someone else? Any other guy you've had your eye on?" She shrugs and runs a finger over the rim of her empty glass. She looks so innocent with her strawberry blond hair and big blue eyes. "No. Look at him out there; he looks so carefree and happy. Why can't I move on like that?"

I take a chip and chomp on it. "Because he was never looking for anything but a one-night stand. He got it, now he is on to his next target."

Bethany mumbles. "I wish we could just break his heart and show him how it feels."

Yeah, right. Taking a couple of chips, I shove them in my mouth. I shouldn't have skipped dinner. Heather was on my ass all night long about looking slim for the club. I reach for another chip when I see Bethany and Heather are both staring at me. You know, with those we took a vote and you lost eyes.

"What?" Suddenly my chip isn't very appetizing; I toss it back into the basket.

Heather wiggles her eyebrows, which really shows me that they're up to something I won't like. "Well, since you know how to treat guys…you can go out with him, then break his heart once he falls in love with you. You're freaking adorable and have the nicest ass. He likes asses."

Wow, is that supposed to make me feel better? "What-absolutely no. No. No. No. Not going to happen. You want me to go out with the damn ass monster."

"Oh, come on, Laney. You can date him for a couple of weeks and then be done. Please…I would do anything! He deserves it, look at him!"

Bethany shouts, pointing at him. I glance over my shoulder at Aiden. He is grinding on some girl and checking another one out. I scoff. "Sure, he is an asshole, Bethany. But I'm definitely not your girl for this."

Heather opens her mouth to say something when two tree trunks of arms wrap around her from behind. She squeals as he nuzzles her neck. "Hey, girls. You three having a great night?"

I hold up my half-empty shot glass and give Todd a sarcastic smile. He snorts and starts to pull Heather toward the dance floor. He has no idea I coached Heather through their entire dating experience. It didn't take long before he was texting her nonstop and asking her to be exclusive. Sucker. They seem happy together so I can't say it wasn't worth it.

The Ashes That Remain
By A.M. Griffin

Blurb:

We're at war against the aliens that have invaded Earth, fighting the only way we can-by surviving. I have more than most people do, but although I know it's stupid to hold on, I can't let go of what might have been-can't help dreaming of something more. No matter how I tell myself it would be easier to do what everyone else wants me to, there's a part of me that can't give in.

Making the best of the situation is one thing. Settling, even to make other people happy, is something else.

Then we hear the alien mother ships have disappeared. Of course we have to go and investigate. What we find lands us in a huge mess that we somehow have to clean up and, as our little enclave is rocked to the core with even more changes, I'm learning a hard lesson.

The more things change-for the better or the worse-there's no fighting human nature, and building on the ashes that remain will take everything we have. And maybe more.

Excerpt:

A dark brown object comes slowly toward us, traversing up and over the uprooted street. The body of the vehicle has odd lines to it, jagged and sharp-foreign-making it hard on the eyes. The wheels move on continuous tracks. With no visible windows that I can see I wonder how it's being steered…then my thoughts wander to who is steering.

"Is it a tank?" I whisper, glancing to Rocky briefly.

Squinting, he continues to peer at the vehicle. "It's not any kind of tank that I've seen. It looks odd."

"Misplaced," I add. "It appears as if it doesn't belong here…not on Earth anyway." My heart seems to fall. Just moments before we'd talked about the alien invasion being over. I let myself believe, just for a minute, humans could reclaim Earth. But now, seeing this thing on what used to be Woodward Avenue, with its dark color contrasting against the pure-white snow, I'm gripped with fear.

These things never plan to leave us.

They're here to stay.

"What are they doing?" Rocky mutters under his breath, talking to himself.

"Why are they traveling in that thing, when they have spaceships?"

Rocky scrunches his salt and pepper brows together. "Spaceships are good at hunting down humans and transporting them to wherever. But that thing…"

"Heavy machinery."

"They're working now." Rocky turns my way. His piercing eyes settle on me. "With humans gone, they are free to build."

Rocky lowers his head and tugs on my arm for me to do the same. He takes his rifle from his back and holds it in his hands. I press my back against the car and reach under my coat to retrieve my pistols. My heart beats so hard against my chest that I feel nothing but pain radiating around my ribs. Blood rushes with such force through my veins that I have to struggle to listen to the vehicle above the noise of it pumping past my eardrums.

With a flick of my thumbs, I release the safety on both guns. I'm breathing so fast and hard that my head begins to swim.

Pull it together.

I close my eyes, trying to steady myself.

"Ian and Jorin are at your nine o'clock," Rocky says. "Try not to kill them."

I crack open my eyes and cut them in Rocky's direction.

"What?" he asks. "You think you'll have a clear shot of anything with your eyes closed?"

True.

The vehicle comes to a screeching halt almost directly in front of where Rocky and I are hiding. We exchange quick glances.

Why did they stop here? Had they seen us?

I tighten my grip on my weapons. Although it's cold, my palms are wet with sweat.

I turn around slowly, my feet crunching against the snow. Looking down, instinctively I try to step in the prints that I've already made…

Our footprints.

My eyes follow the trail of fresh footprints we've made in the snow. One set leads from the street to where we're hiding. I nudge Rocky with my elbow, drawing his attention to what I'm seeing.

He doesn't say a word, but his facial features twist with emotion. I knew what I was getting myself into when I pressed to come. There was always a possibility of encountering the aliens. There had also been a possibility of having to defend ourselves from them-the reason for the weapons.

I've got on my big girl panties.

I'm ready.

Summary from Goodreads:
Five strangers. Countless adventures. One epic way to get lost.

Four teens across the country have only one thing in common: a girl named LEILA. She crashes into their lives in her absurdly red car at the moment they need someone the most.

There's HUDSON, a small-town mechanic who is willing to throw away his dreams for true love. And BREE, a runaway who seizes every Tuesday-and a few stolen goods along the way. ELLIOT believes in happy endings…until his own life goes off-script. And SONIA worries that when she lost her boyfriend, she also lost the ability to love.

Hudson, Bree, Elliot and Sonia find a friend in Leila. And when Leila leaves them, their lives are forever changed. But it is during Leila's own 4,268-mile journey that she discovers the most important truth- sometimes, what you need most is right where you started. And maybe the only way to find what you're looking for is to get lost along the way.

Top 5 YA Authors

  • John Green
  • Leslye Walton
  • David Levithan
  • Corey Whaley
  • E. Lockhart

In the few years since I began reading young adult novels, I've taken a shotgun-blast approach when choosing what to read next. Rather than focusing on one author's work to fully explore, I've tried to get my hands on as many different ones as possible. So, though I've only read one or two books by some of these authors, they wrote the books I most enjoyed within the genre, and am looking forward to reading more and more of their work. Three of them I only discovered this year while traveling to book conferences, and all three of their books (Whaley's Noggin, Lockhart's We Were Liars, and fellow debut author Leslye Walton's The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender) are among my favorite books overall that I've read in the past couple years.

About the Author
Adi Alsaid was born and raised in Mexico City, then studied at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While in class, he mostly read fiction and continuously failed to fill out crossword puzzles, so it's no surprise that after graduating, he did not go into business world but rather packed up his apartment into his car and escaped to the California coastline to become a writer. He's now back in his hometown, where he writes, coaches high school and elementary basketball, and has perfected the art of making every dish he eats or cooks as spicy as possible. In addition to Mexico, he's lived in Tel Aviv, Las Vegas, and Monterey, California. A tingly feeling in his feet tells him more places will eventually be added to the list. Let's Get Lost is his YA debut.

AThe Eyes Die Last
By Teri Riggs

Blurb:

The Las Vegas Mayoral race is heating up, and the incumbent doesn't have a prayer. Wealthy real estate speculator Nick Campenelli, who wants to legalize prostitution in Clark County, and former pastor Louis St. Louis, running on a 'clean-up-Vegas-by-getting-rid-of-the-whores' platform, are the front runners.

They're also front runners on the suspect list for a string of murders. Kennedy O'Brien, four-year detective with cop blood running in her veins, and her partner Wilder "Wild Thing" James, a veteran, are determined to find the man who's murdering prostitutes who work the wrong side of the street, and they don't care how important or politically active he is.

The killer is a man with a mission. He stalks the women before he kills them, leaving a "BEFORE" photo on their bodies, and sending an "AFTER" shot to the local news hound. Ed Hershey, an aging newscaster with just the right amount of grey in his hair, is determined to turn this story into a network gig, and his interference, along with the LVTVS legal team, are making Kennedy and Wilder look bad. Campenelli's good looks and charm, and St. Louis' vitriolic hatred of prostitutes are muddying the waters too, and now the killer seems to have taken a liking to Kennedy.

So the big question remains. Can she get him before he gets her?

Excerpt:

Wilder was fine, just winded. She turned to Elvis, ready to whip some mad on him. "Would you mind explaining what you're doing here?"

"Sorry, Detective Gorgeous Eyes. I'm trying to find out who killed my Priscilla. I might possibly, have overheard you and your partner talking about staking out the store."

"And?"

"I thought I'd have a look myself-undercover. I was doing a decent job of it until I saw Detective James take off like a bat out of hell. I followed in case he needed backup. And, well, here I am." Elvis sheepishly looked away.

"Undercover? In a fucking, flashing, light up Elvis jump suit?" She looked him up and down, blinking at the lights on his clothes.

"I accidentally hit the on button while running."

Kennedy turned to Nick, who still had that same grin she suddenly despised, dimples and all, plastered on his face. "What about you, Campenelli? What's your story?"

"Just out for a stroll, Detective."

Wilder and Elvis both stifled grins and she shot them a look that shut them down. Wilder should know better than to mess with her when she was pissed, and she was really pissed.

"If I had the time I'd haul both of your asses in for obstruction, lock you up, and throw away the key."

"Well now, it's lucky for us you're pressed for time." Nick sounded smug and he was still smiling. Damn the man.

Wilder turned to Elvis. "You get a good look at the man I was chasing? Could he be the man at the casino taking pictures of you and Priscilla?"

"I'm not sure. He sort of looks familiar. But I'm really not sure where or if I've ever seen the dude."

"The man is my campaign manager, John Tully." Nick offered, "You may have seen John on TV with me. We've been on camera quite a bit lately."

Wilder, his breathing back to normal, asked, "Mr. Campenelli, how can we reach your campaign manager? There are questions we're going to need answered."

Nick scribbled down a few notes on the back of a business card and passed it over. "Try calling these numbers. If they don't work, I'll call my assistant and she'll get you John's address. He lives in Summerlin, I believe."

Wilder pocketed the card. "Kenny, I think this stakeout is a bust for the day. I'll take Elvis to Metro, go through some of the mug shots and get that picture of St. Louis in front of him. We'll see if he spots anyone."

"No thanks to these two," Kennedy snarled.

The Eyes Die Last Character Interview with Nick Campenelli.

Interviewer: Mr. Campenelli, thank you for taking the time to visit with us today. I know you're busy with the Las Vegas mayoral campaign and have a business to run.

Campenelli: You're welcome. Thanks for having me. Interviewer: You've been even busier than normal lately with not only your campaign and business, but you were a prime suspect in the Prostitute Killer case. Sounds like Detective O'Brien of Metro Homicide and her team had it out for you.

Campenelli: Detective O'Brien was doing her duty and I think she did a damned fine job. She cleared my name as fast as humanly possible. I can't fault her for that. You and the public should be grateful we have such dedicated and competent people watching out for our safety.

Interviewer: I didn't mean to upset you. I am grateful to have a fine police force as Metro working the streets.

Campenelli: I'm glad to know you weren't trying to belittle Detective O'Brien and the rest of Metro. If you were, this would've of been a very short interview.

Interviewer:How do you manage to stay on top of all the current campaign issues and still have time to run your multi-million dollar business? It has to be time consuming. And how do you expect to keep up with the politics of Las Vegas, and run the city, if you win the election?

Campenelli: I've always managed to keep up with the day to day issues of our city's government as any local resident should. It's never impeded my ability to run my companies. If I'm elected Mayor, I'll have a few extra meetings and appearances added to my schedule, but it will be doable. I feel Las Vegas is ready for a few changes and I'm the man to implement them. I will always find time for my city. I hope anyone not following current events in Las Vegas will soon get started, maybe get involved.

Interviewer: I'd be remiss if I didn't ask what the latest update on your personal life is. Are you dating anyone? Any future Mrs. Campenelli on the horizon?

Campenelli: Now, now. You know I'm not about to share personal information with you.

Interviewer: Can't blame me for trying. You are on the city's most wanted bachelor list.

Campenelli: It's certainly better than being on the Most Wanted criminal list.

Interviewer: Thanks for the interview.

Campenelli: You're welcome.

About the Author:

 photo MEDIAKITteririggs_.jpg

Teri Riggs was destined to be a writer. As a small girl she didn't read bedtime stories, she made up her own. Who needed Little Red Riding Hood or The Three Little Pigs when there were so many great tales bouncing around in her head? When she grew up and became a mother to three little girls, she continued the tradition of making up bedtime stories. On the occasions she chose to tell conventional fairytales, Teri usually gave them a bit of tweaking here and there or added a new ending. Her girls loved it.

After her daughters had the nerve to actually grow up and leave home, Teri discovered she had a passion for writing and jumped right in. It came as no surprise she chose to write mysteries and happily-ever-after's since that's the genres she loves to read.

Teri lives in Marietta, Georgia with her husband, one of her daughters and two dogs that seem to think they rule the world. And some days Teri thinks maybe they do.

Teri still frequently tells herself stories as she falls asleep. The only difference now is she wakes up the next morning and turns her bedtime stories into books.
