Title: Arise Book Three of The Syrenka Series

Author: Amber Garr

Blurb:

With power comes the responsibility to accept its consequences.

After the betrayal of those closest to her, Eviana Dumahl struggles to cope with her new reality. Kidnapped, broken, and confused, she is forced to engage in a war that will alter merfolk politics forever. With her estranged father leading the charge, Eviana has no choice but to stand by his side. Her continued existence hinges on the acceptance of the power growing inside her, even when that means embracing the family’s dark lineage.

Kain Matthew will sacrifice the world for Eviana. And he is not alone. As time runs out, her friends fight to save her life and theirs. An unlikely alliance gives them the edge they need to take a stand, although it keeps Eviana’s heart trapped in the past. A new discovery explains some of her previous mistakes, but it may not be enough to stop her father’s plans. Merfolk, selkies, and water sprites work together to save their kind, only in this final battle, not everyone will survive.

In the striking series conclusion, Eviana will learn the true meaning of power, sacrifice, and love.

Excerpt

Kain

I finished packing up the duffle bag full of knifes, hand grenades, and a couple of Japanese short swords. It was Julian’s weapon of choice, but I preferred to stick with my natural abilities. I’d been practicing my compulsion and my water control seemed to improve every day. It was like a switch had been turned on and I suddenly knew exactly how to manipulate the element with very little effort. The compulsion I would save for a few choice selkies if needed.

As if listening to my internal thoughts, Brendan appeared on the beachside deck and knocked on the door frame. Neither of us acknowledged his presence, so he walked inside and sat down next to Daniel.

“I need to talk to Marisol,” Daniel said and quickly jumped out of his chair then disappeared around the corner. I would thank him for that later.

“Do you need any help?” Brendan asked.

“Nope.”

After a full minute of silence, he spoke again. “Abhainn will find her, right?

I stopped filling the snack bag I was working on and took a deep breath. Do I respond or do I stay silent? I decided to listen to my heart. “Do you really care?”

As though I stabbed a sword through him too, Brendan recoiled in shock. “Of course I care! I love her more than anything in this world!”

“If you truly did love her, you would have left a long time ago.” My voice wavered with anger and a thousand other emotions. Apparently we were going to have this discussion and I wasn’t fully prepared to filter my words.

Brendan jumped to his feet and leaned across the table toward me. “You would have loved that, wouldn’t you? Having her to yourself. Going through with a marriage she never wanted. It would have been perfect for you if I would have stayed in Washington, right?”

“Yes,” I said through gritted teeth. “She would have had a chance to choose me.”

“She always had that chance. I never stopped her.” He moved around the edge of the table so that we were looking at each other eye to eye. I could see the lines around his face and the grey tone of his skin. He looked like hell and I smiled. “What’s so funny?” he snapped.

Ignoring his question, I stared into his eyes. “She doesn’t want you now.”

He sucked in air then turned away from me. “But I need to help her.”

“No, you don’t. We have this under control.”

My Review: Arise

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I recieved a copy of Arise from the author Amber Garr via Bewitching Book Tours blog tour for The Syrenka Series.

In Betrayal Book Two of The Syrenka Series Eviana found out that Lucian was her biological father. Lucian is a very evil merman who wants to take over the world. When he can't convince Eviana to go along with his plan to become the ruler of all the merfolk clans he kidnaps her. He uses Graham who is a council member to try to persuade her to help him to become the ruler of all the clans. Lucian has Graham beaten by his selkie slaves hoping that she will change her mind.

Eviana wonders how she is going to get away from Lucian and stop all the wars and killing. What she doesn't know is that Kain, Brendan and all of her friends have a plan to rescue her. Kain and Brendan both love Eviana so very much that they will do whatever they have to rescue her from Lucian. Even put aside their differences and work together. Both of them would risk or give up their own life for Eviana.

All three books in this series has been one of the greatest love stories of all time. Eviana cares for and loves all three of these guys in her own unique kind of way. She would do what ever needed to be done to help either one. With each book of the series they just kept getting better and better. If you have not yet read The Syrenka Series then you should you will love it.

Betrayal book 2

Title: Betrayal Book Two of The Syrenka Series

Author: Amber Garr

Blurb:

Life as a mermaid can be suffocating.

Eviana Dumahl has returned home as a clan leader, an orphan, and a heartbroken teenage girl. Her parents are dead and her boyfriend, Brendan, has decided that he needs some time away. While battling her inner turmoil, Eviana is forced into the war that Lucian Sutherland has incited amongst her own kind. With the help of Kain, her friend and formally betrothed, the two work together to prove that they deserve their birthrights as young merfolk leaders.

When The Council requests a demonstration of Eviana’s mermaid powers, she finds herself with an opportunity to win back Brendan’s heart. But her orders to train with a repulsive merman and the presence of an attractive new suitor challenges Eviana to embrace her leadership and resist temptation. Lucian is after her, and no one seems to understand why. Loyalties are tested as the casualties increase, showing Eviana that sometimes it is impossible to delineate between friends and enemies.

Excerpt

I wanted to punch him in the face.

For at least the hundredth time today, I swung my fist towards his infuriating smirk. He easily dodged it, of course, and proceeded to look down at me like a child. “You’re getting closer,” he teased.

Throwing my arms down in frustration, I shook my head. “How am I supposed to learn if you won’t even let me get a hit in?”

He laughed and resumed a fighter’s stance. “How are you supposed to learn if I just stand still and let you pummel me? That’s not ever going to happen in the real world. Now, try with your legs.”

I rolled my eyes and shifted my feet so that my stronger right leg was in front. Ideally, I’d be having this battle underwater where my legs were not an issue.

“Protect your face,” he yelled at me and I lifted my fists up to nose level. I could do this. He’d taught me how to incapacitate my enemies. Just go for the knee.

I faked a few smaller kicks, pretending to hesitate. Then, like a ninja, I struck. The underside of my right foot was directly on target and I expected it to land a perfect hit to the side of his left knee. Only it didn’t happen.

Out of nowhere, he grabbed my ankle and I was suddenly airborne. The world spun around me once before I landed with a thud on my back, effectively knocking the air from my lungs. I even saw some stars floating by. My training sessions were getting harder every day, and after this debacle, I decided that it was time to quit.

A shadow moved above me and I used my hand to block out the rest of the sun. Looking up at his ominous figure I said, “I’m done.”

I heard another laugh rumble through my trainer’s chest as he reached down and grabbed my arm. In one swift motion, he pulled me up off the ground.

“You would have broken my knee with that kick, Eviana. I had to stop you.” I glared at him. “What?” he continued. “I’m not going to let you hurt me. But you did well. I knew that you’d learn eventually.”

I jumped towards him as fast as I could, intending to get him in a choke hold. My arms slipped around his neck, but my body kept rolling over him as he bent forward and used my momentum to toss me towards the ground. In less than two seconds, I was on my back again with a forearm pressing against my throat and my pride seeping away into the dirt.

“Ahh!” I screamed in frustration. The annoying grin on his face told me that I would never beat him in a fair fight. Palmer was my cousin, my trainer, and also one of the numerous protectors now living at my house. We’d been practicing for the past two weeks and although I couldn’t hurt him yet, Palmer reassured me that I was improving.

My Review: Betrayal

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I recieved a copy of Betrayal from the author Amber Garr via Bewitching Book Tours blog tour for The Syrenka Series.

Eviana has taken over as the leader of her clan because her mother was murdered by a man who wants to be the leader of all the clans. Who is this man? Lucian Sutherland. Lucian wants to control all of the merfolks. He is an evil merman. He has powers that most merfolk don't have. Lucian wants to control the world. He wants to control everyone like the merfolk, the humans, selkies ect...

Brendan doesn't go with Eviana when she returns home because he needs to spend time alone without Eviana it is a selkie thingy. Brendan never wants to hurt her and he thinks that leaving her will be the best thing that he can ever do for Eviana because of how much he loves her.

The council wants to meet with Eviana for a demonstration of her powers. They want her to show them what she can do and find out how powerful she may be. When they see what she can do they order her to train with a merman that she has met before and does not like or approve of how he uses his gifts or powers. But this merman can help Eviana more than she knows.

Eviana meets someone else that she is attracted too. She meets Graham a member of the council and a merman. Graham is a very hot and sexy dude but Eviana and Graham are attracted to each other because of their bloodlines not because of any feelings that come from their heart. What do we have here? We have a what would you call it, a love triangle , maybe. Who is Eviana really in love with? Is it Kain, Brendan or Graham?

Betrayal is the second book in The Syrenka Series and it is just as good if not better than the first book in the series Promises.

Promises book1

Title: Promises Book One of The Syrenka Series

Author: Amber Garr

Blurb:

Sometimes following your heart can end up destroying the ones you love.

When seventeen-year-old Eviana Dumahl is faced with the responsibility of an arranged marriage and clan leadership, she is forced to choose between the life required of a mermaid and one of a teenage girl simply infatuated with the wrong guy. Kain, her devoted fiancé, would make a wonderful husband except that she’s been in love with Brendan, a shape-shifting selkie, ever since they were kids. Choosing to abandon her family, her clan, and her life with Kain will have dire consequences far beyond anything she could have imagined.

A war is brewing amongst the clans and Eviana unwittingly becomes a pawn in the intricate schemes of a twisted mastermind. With Brendan’s life on the line, she has no choice but to involve those she once considered friends. Amidst encountering senseless tragedies and immense loss, Eviana discovers that she is more valuable as a clan leader than anyone ever suspected. Her survival is not only dependent upon the loyalty of her friends, but also on her acceptance of a life she so adamantly tried to escape.

Excerpt

My swim home was too quick. Lost in the elation of Brendan’s promise, I thought about what I could take with me when I left my home. Maybe one suitcase and my iPod; we could always replace what we couldn’t carry. Would we fly or drive? Where would we go? Brendan had promised to make all of the necessary arrangements soon, but I didn’t know if I could wait to hear his plan.

Night was nearly here and the silhouette of my house looked bleak and menacing. When I reached our backyard stretch of beach, someone was waiting for me. I sighed and picked up my scattered clothing without acknowledging my guest.

“You are in so much trouble this time,” a whiney, nasally voice taunted.

“Shut up, Marisol and mind your own business.” I walked briskly back to the stairs, trying to ignore my sister, but she followed closely at my heels.

“I don’t understand what’s wrong with you. This is what we were born to do and Kain is super rich and totally gorgeous.” She tripped on one of the steps and stumbled into me. I turned with a glare so evil that she stepped away. “He doesn’t deserve you.”

The words were sharp but I knew that they rang true. Kain didn’t deserve someone who couldn’t love him. He was too good and too nice. My sister was right, but that didn’t mean I had to let her know it.

“You don’t even know what you’re talking about Mars,” I snapped at her, using the childhood nickname she loathed. “Just mind your own business for once and leave me alone!”

Stomping up the stairs was probably a mistake. Although I managed to lose one nagging voice, two more were waiting for me at the top. I looked into my parents eyes and could see their growing disappointment. The dark wood deck wrapped entirely around the raised first floor of our house and was large enough to hold a hundred people. But there were only two of them standing there now. They leaned against the railing on the far side with my father holding my mother in front of him in a show of support and unity. I rolled my eyes.

“Told you,” chirped Marisol as she dodged out of the way of my swinging hand.

“Eviana Anne Dumahl. Do not strike your sister.” My father’s harsh command sent chills through my body. I really hated it when he was this mad at me. “And put some clothes on.”

I was standing before them completely naked and soaking wet. Succumbing to the grueling glares, I reluctantly pulled on my blouse using my arms to secure it to my body rather than button it up.

“Where did you go?” my father asked in a lighter tone.

Before I could answer, my mother cut in, “You were with him weren’t you?” She pulled away from my father’s arms and walked toward me with determination. Her long dark hair flowed around her perfectly smooth face. The grace and confidence with which she moved still astounded me.

Without looking into her eyes, I threw back my shoulders and stood my ground. Anything to defy her.

She literally sniffed me. Her nose moved around my neck, my hair, and even my hands. There was no way that I could deny who I’d spent the last few hours with, and I wouldn’t try to anyway.

“I want to be with him. Not Kain.”

My mother tsked at me in disgust and grabbed my face with her hands. She was slightly shorter than me, but her domineering personality was still intimidating. Plus she was squeezing my cheeks pretty hard.

“You will not see that boy again, do you understand? The Matthews have finally agreed to conduct this marriage and you will respect your duties and your family. This is very important to our survival. Can you even begin to comprehend what type of message your behavior is sending?”

I could see the frustration building in her eyes, and before I realized what was happening, my tears spilled over. I pushed her hands away and turned to my father.

“Please, dad. Please! Don’t make me do this!” I waved my arm back toward the house. “Marisol would kill to have the chance to marry Kain and provide him children. Why can’t she just do it?”

“Oh Eviana, please don’t upset yourself like this.” He glided over and wrapped me in an embrace. His warm body and soothing voice kept offering false hope.

“Stop babying her, Charles,” my mother snapped. “She is almost eighteen now. It’s about time she started acting like it.”

Marguerite, my mother and the Dumahl Clan leader, didn’t stop there. “You and I had to endure our marriage when we were much younger than this.” Turning toward me, she continued, “I became a leader when I was your age. I survived. Charles and I survived. And so will you. Stop acting like a spoiled brat and accept your responsibility!”

My mother walked away toward the deck’s edge to regain her composure and my father sighed. I knew what was coming next.

“Eviana, you must do as you are told. Kain is a nice young man with a good family. And from what I can see, he is already quite smitten with you.”

I sobbed out of control. I really did hate to disappoint my father and even my mother sometimes. But this is not the life I wanted. I suddenly realized that I wasn’t crying because I’d have to marry Kain, I was crying because I knew that I had to run away. There was no other choice at this point.

Feigning total defeat, I pulled away and looked up at him. His middle-aged face could pass for someone ten years younger, but the wrinkles around his eyes did little to hide his distress. I’d probably been the cause of most of those lines.

“When is it?” I asked.

Both of my parents looked at me in shock. They shared a glance between them, no doubt trying to figure out if this was a trick. My mother replied hesitantly, “The first of the month.”

My Review: Promises

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I recieved a copy of Promises from the author Amber Garr via Bewitching Book Tours blog tour for The Syrenka Series.

Eviana's parents tells her that is she is to be married to Kain on the first of the month. This news upsets Eviana because she is in love with her long time best friend Brendan. When she sees that her parents won't listen to her and let her marry Brendan she plays long with them. She lets her parents, Kain and everyone else believe that she is going to do what they want her to do. Brendan and Eviana make plans to run away together so they can spend the rest of their lives with each other. On the night before she is to marry Kain they leave in the middle of the night.

When Brendan is injured while they are swimming and his selkie skin is stolen, he will die with out his skin which he needs to shift. Eviana calls Kain for his help she doesn't know if he will help her or not. But Kain loves Eviana and will do what ever he can to help her even let her be with Brendan.

Promises was my second mermaid book and I loved it just as much as my first one. I am so thankful that I got to be a part of The Syrenka Series Blog Tour.

The Syrenka Series In Six Words

1. Choice – Eviana is faced with a lot of decisions in the series, and she doesn’t always make the right one. The choice to listen to her parents and follow their plan proves to be one of the hardest for her, and even though she went one direction in Promises, she finds herself coming full circle by the end of Arise.

2. Secrecy – In this series, merfolk and the other water creatures like selkies and sprites live in secret amongst the humans. However, there are some who want to change the way they interact with the world and Eviana finds herself trapped in the middle of the battle.

3. Friendship – The relationships between Eviana and her friends are the ones that help get her through everything. Some of these evolve slowly, others develop into something much deeper. But through it all, each relationship is important to her and helps guide her into becoming the clan leader she was meant to be.

4. Love – Love for family, each other, and the secret they protect is central to the story in each book. Eviana learns how love can mean different things and the extent some will go to prove how much it means to them.

5. Water – A mermaid series wouldn’t make sense without a water component. Although my mermaids spend equal time on land passing as humans, catering to their other half is essential to their survival. Additionally, water sprites and selkies are an important part to their world, and Eviana discovers this as the series progresses.

6. Loyalty – In war, someone’s true intentions may not ever be known. Unfortunately, as the title Betrayal might imply, Eviana is surrounded by people she can’t always trust. Even up until the final battle, she finds that those closest to her often have ulterior motives.

Blog A Quote #13

Blog A Quote is weekly meme hosted by Michelle Chew Writes. Each week we will be sharing a quote from our favorite books. For more info and to sign up visit Michelle Chew Writes.

My quote for this week is from The Goddess Test By Aimee Carter

The Goddess Test (Goddess Test, #1)

“This is the gate between the living and the dead", he said. "You are still living. The others on the grounds died very long time ago." A chill ran through me. "And you?" "Me?" The corner of his mouth twitched. "I rule the dead. I am not one of them” ?

The Goddess Test was a very fantastic read. I loved reading about all the Gods and Goddess. I liked how Aimee Carter changed the names for each God and Goddess. I also loved how Kate was still alive but yet she lived among the dead. Kate is a very great person she was willing to give up her life or a part of it to keep her mother alive.

Review: Windy City of the Dead (Dark Bites Part 1) By Robert Ropars

Title: Windy City of the Dead (Dark Bites Part 1)

Author: Robert Ropars

Published: August 15th 2010

Published by: Smashwords.com

Kindle Edition

Pages: 29

Goodreads Synopsis:

Dark Bites is a horror short story collection focusing on the classic creatures we love to fear: zombies, vampires, werewolves, ghosts and more. Crow needs to get out of the Windy City fast with just her wits and any weapons she can find. But between her and escape are hordes of brain-chomping zombies spreading their plague across the city and through her condo building. 52 floors to go...

My Review:

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I got this book as a free download from Amazon.

Crow is awaken during the middle of the night and runs out on the balcony. She's like what is going on? She looks off into the horizon and sees a big bright light. She runs inside and grabs her laptop and turns on the tv. She is searching the internet trying to find out what is happening and watching the news on tv at the same time.

Then she is texting her brother trying to figure it all out. Crow's brother is telling her to get out as fast as she can that the dead is turning into zombies. Crow knows about zombies unlike most people in books or movies. She knows that she will need weapons and what kind of weapons that she needs to survive.

I really liked how the writer portrayed the main character which is Crow in this book. She knew what to do. She knew how to protect herself. She knew how to fight the zombies. She didn't wait for some man or other character to take the lead and tell her what to do. Undoubtedly she has watched a few movies or tv shows about zombies.

Excerpt of The End Begins: The Nine:

The early morning light of Cass’s fourth day in Jurgin almost blinded her. It was the second day having taken on an overnight shift and the hours were worn on her face. Children with large backpacks passed her, smiling and waving. Some of her other neighbors acknowledged her with a wave, though they seemed to still avoid her despite having blended into their population quite well.

From the street, Cass entered a small diner, very homely and inviting even with a small layer of noticeable dust. Once inside she noticed her other co-workers sat in a booth not far from the front door. She quickly turned away and sat in her own booth. The waitress was quick to come by to take her order. The male co-workers from the other side of the room tried to grab her attention, but she paid little attention and was thankful when her food arrived.

This diner she’d visited since coming to Jurgin specialized in hearty meals of bacon, eggs, and sausage, though she defied the usual for hash browns and eggs. The food was quick to come and she enjoyed the taste and though she only nibbled at the meat, she gorged herself on eggs, potatoes, and toast. Already the feeling crept in that she was losing herself in the local community’s filth at times.

As she tore into a strip of bacon, her glance shifted to the floor, a discarded newspaper sat under her feet. She brought it up to the table when a long article on the side of the newspaper’s face with an image of Skylar and some other Tro-Dey’s greeting the locals of that area the picture was taken, that had a name she had a hard time saying.

Cass scanned the plain-faced type font of the article, which at first caught her off guard to how similar it was to her own. She learned it was an interview given by Skylar, their acting representative, during the Nine’s first visit to Washington. They were interested in expanding their influence to the country in light of the issues the ravaged country had.

The young woman sank in her chair in anguish as one of her co-workers, a six-foot-something rotund man with large, black, and round glasses came and sat at her booth. She didn’t respond to his presence.

“What you readin’?” he asked.

“Nothing in particular,” she lied. He leaned on the table toward her.

“Look, Jass. Let’s face it. No one around here has taken to you too well. I know you’re not from around here and so do most of us. All I’m saying is, you hang with the right people, and things will go easier for you. Just trying to make your life a little easier. I’m sure you can appreciate that, can’t you?”

Dwelling in her personal hell, her vision locked on the paper until the fat man swiped the newspaper from her.

“Are you listening, Jass?” he asked.

Cass shot up from the table. “My name is Cass! C-A-double-S!” Her diamond blue eyes narrowed at him. “I’ve had enough of your insistent meddling in my affairs. I am not going to,” she searched her mind a second for the right word, “fuck? You? Okay? Get found? Lost? Go away! Leave me be,” she threw down some flamboyant currency on the table and left for the door.

The man, with the paper in hand, stood from the booth. Before she made it to the door, two men, the fat man’s lapdogs from his booth, had the door blocked.

“Let me pass.”

“Jass,” the fat man gingerly called to her, “It would be in your best interests if you…”

The moment the fat man put a hand on her shoulder, she kicked into the side of his knee. He yelped an octave higher while his mass crashed to the ground with a loud thud. As the young alchemist’s attention returned to the two men at the door, her face connected with the fist of one of the lapdogs. Disoriented, the other shoved her into the diner’s counter.

As they advanced on her, she groped the counter for a weapon.

Steak knife. Dirty but sharp, she thought, but the lap dog’s greedy hands pinned her against the counter with their strength.

The fat man wobbled to his feet with a face red with anger. She felt his next course of action was going to be a violent one.

There were no options now; she had got in over her head.

Cass willed energy into her hands until they were a hint of red, then grabbed the closest man that held an arm and burned them. He released her, cursing while the skin on his forearm blistered instantly.

When the other tried to restrain her, she landed a quick jab that left knuckle marks in their skin, then released the energy housed in her hand and shot a small fireball into his face. The second lackey was down for the count, their skin was red, blistered and cracked.

But the fat man would not be detoured, and lumbered after her. She brushed her hands as they turned blue against her clothes. Energy crackled along the veins of her hands as she drew it from her torso and double-fisted him in the chest.

The sudden impact knocked the glasses off the large man’s face as he stumbled across the room and crashed into a table while he went into cardiac arrest. The other lackey, with forearms burnt, backed away. Cass stood, bleeding with her power, triumphant.

Then came the stares and shocked faces of the witnesses around her.

Tips for Assembling a Writing Group

One of the best tools of a writer’s arsenal can be his writing group, a group of people who want feedback so they can gauge how well they are writing. Having been with a few groups over the last couple years, today I’ll go over what you need to look for and what to watch out for when assembling your group.

A writing group should consist of a few core values:

  1. Establish an Ultimate Goal – What is the goal of the group? To be published? Is it a past time? Socializing? This should be established from the beginning so that everyone knows the expectation of themselves and of the other members.

  2. Experience of the writers – It is important to have a variety of experience and background within the group or at the very least similar experience levels. Though you might not know what you’re dealing with until you have a meeting or two, it'll be important to make a mental note of what the group’s assets are.
  3. My current group, for example, has a person with a Master’s Degree in English, a published story author, an English teacher, and a self-published author with a degree in film production, and one who is a complete newbie to the industry. There’s a wealth of knowledge to draw upon and allows growth in different ways. The unpublished draws upon the published. The self-published can rely on the grammar experience of the English major. See the picture? A symbiotic relationship is established here.

  4. Genre – depending on your group, you may want a group where everyone writes a common genre (ex. urban fantasy or contemporary romance). Or maybe you want to expose yourself to other kinds of stories so you allow other genres in. That is up to you and your group members. I feel there’s no right or wrong answer for this. I would just be careful not to be too polarizing and that everyone wants to be open to it.

  5. Quality expectations – Are you working rough drafts or complete works? In my group I have one guy who gives us stuff he feels is ready to be sent out, while another gives us outlines of what he wants, making sure his story is working before investing too much time in the writing. Another expectation that should be made clear pretty early on. Some may not want to mess with developmental stuff and want to work with stuff that is ready, and others might be the opposite.

  6. Meeting frequency –We meet twice a month on Mondays, giving us time for other commitments every other week. It’s important to establish a consistent meeting day and time to keep confusion down and keep from botching everyone’s weekly schedules. If people feel like the meetings have no consistency, they won’t take it seriously and may stop coming.

Now that I’ve covered things some things you should have for a group. There are some things you need to watch out for that can hamper a group:

  1. Don’t be just a spectator. Work on other people’s work and they will do yours in return. That’s how it should work. Only wanting to hear about your work and not wanting to work on other’s does not make a good group member. This should not be tolerated in order of fairness among everyone attending. Once in a blue moon is okay, things come up. But it should not be a recurring thing.

  2. Do not bring a ton of emotional/demonic/self-hating stuff to the group. It’s not productive most of the time. We had a guy going through therapy who brought this kind of stuff. His stories were vague and incoherent pieces about murder/rape and he didn’t really critique other people’s stories, just looked for feedback on his own. He eventually ended up not returning after two meetings. Some things are not meant for the group, working out personal issues in this manner is one of them.

  3. Socializing. There’s nothing wrong with talking and chit chatting but don’t let it detract from the work. That's what you're there for. We have our good times in our group but we’re pretty serious about our work and waste little time between the two hours we have. We're too busy to do that. Again this is a preference you should set with your group in the beginning. Don’t be afraid to reign in everyone if you stray too far off the path.

  4. Not showing up, always calling off. Watch out for those who are serious and those who are not (again depending on your goals/expectations for the group, you may or may not be lax about attendance). Sometimes things come up that someone has to drop out, or maybe they weren't serious to begin with. Protect yourself and your time – if people are making excuses for weeks in a row it might be time to start looking for a new group.

  5. You are not married to your group. There will be those who take things too personally, or get too personal attached to the people they work with. Don't be! Especially if you are trying to get published. I went to a convention recently and someone told me after one of the writing panels I was on that they had a group member get offered representation - but wanted to check with their writing group first. They never got signed. Don't be that guy!

Also you may realize that your group isn't working. You guys just don't have the same tastes. Your talent levels are nowhere near each other. The list goes on. That’s okay! These issues will vary from group to group but the bottom line is this - if you are not getting what you want out of the group, either take steps to change it within, or get out and start new. Don't be afraid to voice your concerns, and if it is taken personally get out. You don't owe them anything except to tell them you are moving on.

So now that that’s covered, where do you find awesome people to share your journey to publication? Our group members were found on craigslist looking for writers/artist looking to join one. Other places to look for opportunities are: Facebook, a writing class or seminar, conventions, and sometimes even bookstores have bulletin boards for such things. Get out there and explore!

Taming the Vampire (Blood and Absinthe, #1)

Title: Taming the Vampire (Blood and Absinthe #1)

Author: Chloe Hart

Kindle Edition:

Pages: 61

Published: August 5th 2011

Publisher: Chloe Hart

Goodreads synopsis:

An unlikely partnership…

Demon hunter Liz Marlowe and vampire Jack Morgan have hated each other from the moment they met. But when a powerful enemy threatens their beloved city of Boston, they form a reluctant alliance. It’s supposed to be temporary—just one night, in fact. But as the tension between them builds to the breaking point, neither is prepared for what happens next.

Taming the Vampire is Book 1 of the Blood and Absinthe series.

My Thoughts

Taming the Vampire caught my attention from the very first page and I didn't like having to lay it down the few times that I did but I had no choise. It is a very great read although I wish that it had been longer. I would have like to know more about Liz and Jack and why they seemed to hate each with such intensity.
