Book Summary:
Be careful what you wish for…

Lyra has always been ahead of the curve. Top of her class in school, a budding astronomer, and with a best friend like Darren she barely has time to miss the mother who abandoned her family years ago. She's too busy planning to follow in her father's footsteps, and to become the youngest astronomer at Space Exploration and Discovery.

When a star goes missing Lyra is determined to get to the bottom of it only to discover her braniac dad is the mastermind of a top-secret government experiment. They promise to build a perfect world, one galaxy at a time, but with every tweak of the present, a bit more of the future starts to crumble.

Lyra has to go undercover to reveal the truth and let humanity decide if the consequences are worth more than wishing on a star.

About the Author
Eventually the day came when the voices in Kelley Lynn's head were more insistent then her engineering professor's. So instead of turning to her Thermodynamics book, Kelley brought up a blank page on her computer screen and wrote. Somewhere along the way she became a Young Adult author.

Kelley was born and raised a Midwestern girl. She's not afraid to sweat and fills her free time with softball, soccer and volleyball. (Though you probably don't want her on your volleyball team.) She occasionally makes guest appearances as a female vocalist for area bands. Music plays a large role in her writing process as well as the characters and plot lines within her stories.

You can find Kelley hanging out at her blog, titled in her name, as well as the group blog she shares with her fellow critique partners, Falling for Fiction. Kelley is a member of the Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators.

In the town of Belle Ridge there are doctors, lawyers and teachers... but there is only one vampire. Will Leighton has become an expert in making a life for himself amongst the unsuspecting small-town inhabitants, as the high school history teacher. He has spent hundreds of years crafting an identity and routine that make him feel almost human, but he is always missing that important final element, love.

Ashton Wallace is beautiful, smart, and angry. She was forced into an eternal existence, and now her family has moved her away from everything and everyone she knows. In Belle Ridge she is supposed to finish high school and start her life again, but how do you make plans for the next several centuries?

Will has never met another of his kind, and is immediately intrigued by Ashton. He longs to show her that the perceived vampire lifestyle, so popular in storybooks, is far from reality...but will she let him be a friend and guide in this new existence? Excerpt:
"Ashton, I think you'll be very happy here at Belle Ridge." The principal was talking, but Ashton wasn't paying attention to him. Instead, she slumped in her seat, glaring at her parents.

She couldn't think of a worse moment than sitting in this man's office. Well, there was one worse moment, the moment that brought her here, but she tried to never ever think of it. So instead, she would dwell on this one.

Ashton had begged her parents to let her get her high school equivalency degree. She was already nineteen years old. Her friends had all graduated last year. It had been painful to miss out on her senior year with the people she'd known since childhood. Instead of football games and prom dress shopping, Ashton had spent her senior year at home, feeling confused and alone. Her parents decided to move Ashton and her little brother to Belle Ridge. It was supposed to be a fresh start and a chance for Ashton to finish high school and figure out some way to move forward with her life.

Her parents felt the only way to deal with the uncertain future was to cut ties with the past. Ashton wasn't stupid; she knew she could never go back to the life she used to have. But the thought of letting go of her old hopes and dreams was almost more than she could bear. Even worse, she was sitting in a high school in Belle Ridge, just a few months shy of what should be her twentieth birthday. A twenty year old high school senior? Ashton felt like a joke. "Nobody has to know anything about you that you don't want them to know," her mother had told her more times than she could count. She had said it again in the car just before they arrived here today. Maybe she needed to embrace being a blank page. From her current position, a life of anonymity seemed like the best course.

About the Author
Whether writing stories to entertain her younger siblings, or typing up an essay for a class, Emily Shaffer has been a writer for as long as she can remember.  Her stories may have changed from talking cartoon frogs to angsty young adults, but her goal to write a compelling story remains the same.  When not writing, she lives in Nashville and enjoys all the music, food, and excitement that city has to offer.  Her first novel, the well-received chick-lit title That Time of the Month was self-published on Amazon in 2012.  Her latest novel, as the others before, are fueled by diet soda and pie.

Anecdotes and real case studies ripped from the headlines about what doctors did which got them into trouble either with Medicare, HIPPA, The Office of Inspector General or worse the FBI.

The case studies presented within these pages are true stories of medical professionals: Some are about providers just like you. Many doctors are just trying to navigate the maze of the medical billing process.

Many providers thought that if they only bill just 99213’s, they could stay under the radar. What they didn’t expect is that by doing this and not varying their coding appropriately, they were raising red flags about their billing practices which led to them being audited by Medicare.

With the changing rules and regulations and challenges facing healthcare, you cannot afford to miss this information.

If you submit even one claim for reimbursement this is a must read!

Excerpt:

One winter morning a doctor, called Dr. Winters received a phone call from one of his patients.
Dr. Winter, I am really upset.”
And why is that Mr. Jones?” the doctor asked innocently.
I recently got hired by a new company, and well they are requesting a pre-employment physical.”
Well I have seen you recently, has anything changed for you? You were in good health when I saw you last.”
Well, here is the thing, doc, I am feeling fine, actually better than ever,” said Mr. Jones
Okay so what’s the problem?”
They denied my employment, and told me to contact my doctor.”
That’s unusual. Did they tell you why?”
No, just that I better call you as soon as possible.”
Okay why don’t you schedule an appointment with my office, and we can run some tests to see what if anything is going on.”
Okay thank you doctor.”
The patient had a battery of tests and a complete physical and all were normal. Dr. Winters released Mr. Jones back into the world, and told him if he develops any kind of symptoms to contact him. As one would expect three months went by and Dr. Winters never gave Mr. Jones and the mystery of why Mr. Jones was denied employment another thought.
About three months later, Dr. Winters received a note from Medicare requesting about twenty of his charts for a post-payment review, sort of a mini audit. He was upset. A doctor hears audit, and well it would be the same as if the IRS came a knocking. His staff pulled the twenty patient files and Dr. Winters reviewed the patient’s clinical notes he had well documented in the medical records.
The first patient had been congestive heart failure, and the patient was anxious about whether to undergo a CBBGE bypass surgery. The next patient had a rotator cuff injury and was also worried about his ability to play pro-baseball if he had his surgery. The third was a patient that had experienced symptoms of a heart attack, but it was deemed to be just anxiety.
After careful review, he copied the records and sent them off to Medicare. Another three months passed, and then he got a notice from Medicare to refund two thousand dollars, based on their audit findings.
Needless to say, Dr. Winters was pissed. Of course, Medicare requested this information on the day before he was to leave on a much deserved vacation. Well, he cut the check and sent the funds to Medicare. Most physicians may have left it at that, but Dr. Winters was peeved at Medicare, and personally resolved to get to the bottom of this outrage.
He had his staff call Medicare, but they were not able to determine the cause of the problem. Finally after his own frustration escalated he resolved to solve the case of the audit himself. Two hours and countless phone transfers he finally spoke to a live representative at Medicare who told him, in all of the twenty cases he billed for Leprosy.
Leprosy?” he yelled at the Medicare representative. “There is no leprosy outbreak in Canoga Park.”
I am looking at the copies of the screen on my computer, and the claims were all billed with a Leprosy diagnosis.”
Well obviously this is just a simple billing error” Dr. Winter’s proclaimed.
After hanging up the phone and finding his biller, Dr. Winter’s determined that his biller had transposed the ICD-9 code and instead of anxiety using the code 300.0 she had submitted the bills to Medicare with the code 030.0 for leprosy.
Mr. Jones was contacted and Dr. Winter’s office had to contact a few other non-Medicare patients to notify their commercial insurances of their office’s mistakes. Fortunately, for Mr. Jones he did seek new employment however his insurance company still shows a history of Leprosy in the patient’s database of coverage. When he changes insurances it rears its ugly head again.
The moral: It is the physician who is responsible to make sure his staff is accurate especially when submitting claims on his/her behalf. Dr. Winters was flagged at Medicare and from that day forward he had to often submit medical records every quarter to justify his level of billing and for diagnostic accuracy. Over the course of the next couple of years he got audited by Medicare three times.

Author Interview:

What inspired you to write Soul Searching?

I was inspired to write Medical Billing Horror Stories, from a few of my clients who asked me "what are your other providers doing about these Medicare Audit requests? And it occurred to me with all the changes out there, that there wasn't a guide book to explain all of these things.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I had a toy typewriter at age 9 and I told everyone in my family that I was going to be a writer. I wrote a novella in Grade 5 that the librarian put in the library at my elementary school, and many of my classmates signed it out and read it. I can only remember very vague details about the story now, but I am curious if it is still in the library of that school- ( I wont tell you how many years later)

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I loved reading as a young girl and read all the Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldon mysteries.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I love mystery and thrillers.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

My 4 favorite authors that I pre-order all their books are: David Baldacci, Harlen Coben, Linwood Barkley and Nelson DeMille. Last year I got to meet a few in person at a writers conference in New York City. Many of the books I love are one's I read in one sitting even if it means staying up till 3 am, because I literally cant put it down. Now that I have migrated to Kindle, I usually have to read it close to an electrical outlet so it can charge as I read it at the same time.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I really have no interest in traveling back in time, I have too many things I am working on that I love here and now. I would like to ask Shakespeare if he was deliberate in his writing of all the plots, sub-plots and all of the imagery and levels that we were studying in high school and college or was it just a co-incidence?

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Writing comes easy for me. But that doesn't mean it is well-written. I have to edit, and re-edit to get the first draft in better shape. There are some aspects of writing I can only go by other people who are editors and have read many other writers work. I have been told that I have an ear for dialogue and write realistically. My weaknesses are making sure I don't insert POV's into people walking down the street, and what we in the writing world like to call "head jumping."

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

My labradoodle Jason is a celebrity in his own right, and he manages his own website at www.petjason.com and is on twitter @petjason.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

I love to eat, and I am impartial to pizza. I Love love it.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

My advice to writers is Nike says just do it! Writing should be fun. If you get yourself in the zone, the characters will come to life in your head, and soon they will be having their own conversations and taking actions that surprise even the writer. It is not something easily explained but when you experience it, it is exciting. In my book, things started to come together after I completed the research phase, and then I just sat down and kept writing. It is my motto to write first and edit later. You can't edit a blank page. So just do it.

Excerpt:

He's gone. And what did I figure? That I'd be the girl to change him? That I'd be the girl he falls in love with? That I'd be the girl who could claim his heart, even though countless others have tried and failed?

I'm an idiot.

For years, my Dirty Heaven was Vaughn Asher. I lived and breathed for those Saturday nights and ever since I met him in person, my fantasy faded away, one disappointment at a time.

He's a jerk.

He's a sexual deviant-and even though I did like that date we had, a BDSM relationship was never part of my perfect fantasy. I didn't exactly dream of wedding bells and diapers, but it was a monogamous partnership kind of dream. I would live in Denver and build my career, flying out to see him in Hollywood every weekend for parties and fun. Then he'd fly back with me on Sunday nights to fuck me in ways that did not involve kneeling at his feet or having bite-sized morsels placed on my tongue. He'd kiss me goodnight on my doorstep like the perfect Prince Charming and fly home for a week of hard work and I'd do the same here in my own little corner of the world.

And although I think he might be on board with the distance that I prefer in a relationship, his unique sexual requests are not part of my long-term plan. That is vacation sex. That is one-night-stand sex. That is not partnership sex. So it's better this way. I'm perfectly happy like this. I'm going to find myself a new fantasy prince and give him all my Dirty Heaven attention. Maybe a younger one this time. Someone more my age. Someone who doesn't need to prove his sexual prowess with games.

"Earth to Grace?"

I'm going to forget all about Vaughn Asher, wipe him right out of my life.

"Hello?"

Which is easier said than done when those stupid fucking Invisible Man 2 posters are all over this fucking airport.

"See something you like up there? Because that's my soon-to-be husband."

"What?" I look over at Kristi who is handing me a cup of coffee from the Starbucks while stuffing her face with a blueberry muffin. "No!" I laugh. "No, I was looking at the IM2 poster next to Johnny Blazen's Broncos."

"Oh, yeah, that Vaughn Asher is a dream. I'd do him." She chuckles as we drag our luggage onto the moving sidewalk that will take us down to the end of the concourse to the gate. The Blazens have hired a jet to shuttle Denver friends and family over to Vegas and they keep all the small airlines on the very edge of the concourse, making the walk a long one.

Hmmm. "He's OK, I guess. Not quite my idea of a dream though.
