Review: The Deep By Jen Minkman @JenMinkman

The Deep
The Island #3
by Jen Minkman

Blurb:

‘The world is never-ending.
I never realized just how much space there is – how far and wide the water around our island stretches out. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I may have believed that a second Wall ran around Tresco, containing the infinite waters so we wouldn’t all wash over the edge and plummet down into the depths.’

Leia and Walt are on their way to the Other Side, where the legendary land of Cornwall awaits them. Tony, their new friend, has told them that all wars of the past have been forgotten and the citizens of Bodmin and Dartmoor live in peace. People adhere to the tenets of an old religion that preaches forgiveness and non-violence.
However, Walt and Leia soon discover that even a peace-loving, ideal society like this one may have its flaws. While on a forbidden trip to Exeter, the old city of their ancestors, the two Islanders discover more about the new world than they ever bargained for.

Secrets run dark and passions run deep in this thrilling conclusion to the Island novella series.

Excerpt:

After a copious lunch, we are met in the main hall by a man who introduces himself as Harry, the hotel owner. Apparently, he can get temporary housing for all of us.

“Tomorrow, Tony will take us to Moretonhampstead in his bus,” Walt tells me excitedly. “That’s where the largest library of Dartmoor is, so we can find out everything we want to know about the world as it used to be.” He smiles at me and pulls me into his arms. “He also told me we could find the original stories about Luke and Leia there.”

“What a strange thought,” I say numbly. I’m not so sure I want to read those books full of made-up stories at all. Will it do me any good? I feel at a loss. Walt gently strokes my hair, noticing my apprehension. “Let’s just flip through them together. I’m quite curious, actually. So, shall we follow Harry to his hotel?”

“Are you going to share a room with your father?”

He starts to chuckle. “Afraid so. I carefully dropped a hint that I might want to get a room with you, and that set him off on a full-fledged rant about the birds and the bees and such.”

I’m sure I’m flushing crimson. “Well, he’s right, you know. Besides, you hadn’t even asked me if I wanted to share a room.”

Walt shrugs. “That’s why I said I might,” he says defensively.

Now it is my turn to chuckle. “Well , how about in Moretonhampstead?” I tease him, lowering my voice before I continue: “After a long day of study in the library, we should do something fun, too, don’t you think?”

“Hmm.” His eyes sparkle. “Good point.”

Hand in hand, we trot outside and follow the hotel owner. The other islanders trail behind us. I’m curious to see where Harry will take us.

My Review:

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Leia grew up on the island of Tresco where when all of the children reached the age of ten years old they were considered adults and were sent to live in the big house which was called the manor. Leia and all of the other children lived there and were taught how to take care of themselves. All of the children that lived at the manor and "the parents" believed in "The Book" which was actually titled "Star Wars". Leia's and everyone else's ancestors were taught that "The Book" was the rules that they had to follow. The children lived at the manor until they found someone to marry and then they would move back into the town and live like all of "the parents". This book they called "The Book" was their bible it was all they knew. There was no one left alive who knew the real truth. But Leia didn't like how everyone was being treated by their leader Saul. Saul wanted to be in control and to always be the leader. But Leia began to question if everything they had been taught was a lie or not. There was a wall that separated Tresco from the other side of the island where the "Fools" lived. No one was ever to cross over the wall. The "Fools" were unbelievers and were not to be trusted.

But Leia wanted to know the truth and it was time for someone to stop Saul. Leia's life became endangered so she ran away and climbed over the wall to the other side to meet with her new friend Walt a "Fool" who lived on the other side. Walt helped to keep her safe from Saul. Leia found out that Walt and the people who lived on the other side of the wall were not such bad folks after all. Walt and the "Fools" believed that their Goddess Annabelle was coming back for them one day. So they were always on the lookout for Annabelle's return.

Leia and Walt both wonder if there was anything else out there or other people. Are there other people across the water or were they the only people left alive? Their new friend Tony who came from across the water told them that there were other people out there and that there was a whole other world across the water. Leia and Walt along with some of the other people on the island wanted to go see what was across the water. So Tony took them on a long voyage across the water to meet these other people.

I am so very glad that I have had the opportunity to read the Island series. I love the whole concept of telling children about "The Book" and that book being "Star Wars", a fantasy book. It just goes to show that there is more than one way to believe in something and everyone thinks that what they believe is the truth. How could there be more than one God? Why doesn't everyone believe the same? What makes one person's belief right and the other one wrong? The children that was taught that "Stars Wars" was their bible thought they were right and the "Fools" who were waiting for their Goddess Annabelle to come back for them were wrong. And the "Fools" thought that they were right and the children on the other side of the wall were wrong. If someone believes one way and you believe another don't make that person out to be the bad person. What someone believes in may be the only thing that is getting them through life. The sad part is that each group of people were all taught lies and neither one of them knew it. They had no way of knowing with no one left alive that knew the real truth.

I am going to miss all of the characters in this series. I would like to go along with them on their new voyage and to be with them when they reach their destination. Will Walt and Leia finally tie the knot? Will they have a family of their own? What will they tell their children? What will they teach their children to believe in? You know it really doesn't matter as long as they are good people and parents.

Have you read "The Island" Series? No? Then what are you waiting for? Go grab your copy today and get started. It is one of the best and I mean best series ever written. If you have an open mind and can handle reading something that is way different than anything that you have read before then jump on board and let the light in.

Excerpt:

When we reached the hospital, it was chaos. There were ambulances, police, and news vehicles crowding the Emergency entrance. I tried to hear what was going on, but we weren't close enough. None of it mattered anyway. I'd be gone soon.

"I'm a couple days early, but I already called the doctor. We don't need to go in that way." I assured Nolan. He eyed the ER, then turned the truck around to the main entrance and pulled up in front of the glass doors. He handed the keys to the valet, thanking them before helping me out.

"You called everyone else, right?" I looked up at him as he eased me into a wheelchair. "I want them to be here for yo-I want them to be here when Emma comes." Nolan gave me a questioning look but nodded. "Yes, I called them. Aggie is rounding up the troops as we speak."

"Good." I felt a little more at ease at that thought. Of everyone that had been there with Nolan when something went wrong, I trusted Aggie the most. I was sure she could help Nolan through this too.'

"Harley! Ya okay? Is it another one?" Nolan stopped and kneeled in front of me. I was doubled over, my hand gripping the side of the wheelchair. I could only nod, letting out puffs of breath. A couple nurses were already rushing to our side, seeing me in active labor.

"Come on, mommy. Let's get you into a room." The woman's chipper tone stung me.

Mommy. I won't get the chance to be her mommy.

Twenty minutes later we were settled into a room in the maternity ward and my contractions were coming quicker and stronger than before.

"My, first time moms usually are sitting and waiting for hours for anything to happen. You're just moving right along, aren't you?" The nurse shook her head after she checked my dilation. "Hope your doctor gets here before the baby does." She joked but I gave Nolan a nervous look.

He kissed my forehead and came closer to the side of the bed. "It'll be okay, love."

I squeezed my eyes shut. Another wave of contractions hit me hard. My fingers gripped the bed railings and I tried to hold back the scream forcing its way up.

"Breathe, baby, breathe." Nolan's hand caressed my back and I let out a slow breath, tears stinging my eyes.

"I'm scared." I couldn't help the pitiful tone in which the words came out when the contraction finally subsided. Nolan leaned over me as I laid back. He brushed the strands from my face that were stuck in place from the sweat coating my forehead.

"Yer doin' good. Yer almost there, love, and I'll be right here the whole time."

I nodded, pressing my forehead to his and his fingers intertwined with mine. I didn't want him to be here. I didn't want him to watch me die. But it was a comfort to know I wouldn't be alone. I gave his large hand a squeeze, savoring the feel of it and the way mine fit in it so perfectly. God, I didn't want to let go.

I won't. Not until I have to.

The doctor came into the room a couple minutes later, just as another wave of contractions subsided.

"Well, Mrs. Finley, you're ready to go. Next contraction, I want you to push, got it?"

I nodded, still clutching Nolan's hand as another one hit.

"Alright, here we go. Push!"

I let out a pitiful whimper at the pressure building within me, but pushed with everything I could.

"Alright, just a couple more pushes, Harley. You've got this."

I already felt my body weakening, but I did what I was supposed to. Just how the vision went. I pushed again and the world blurred around me.

"Harley, I can see her head! You're almost there." Nolan's voice was filled with joy, and a tear ran down my cheek. I didn't want to leave him, but at least he'd have her. Our baby girl.

"Okay, one more push." The doctor's voice was barely distinguishable, but I already knew what I had to do.

"I'll always love you, Nolan." My words slurred together and I gave his hand one last squeeze. With everything I had left, I pushed. I heard Emma's wailing just before the lights faded overhead and my hand slipped out of his.

"Harley? Harley!"

Book Soundtrack:

Possess My Soul got a lot darker than the rest of the series...and as a result so did the playlist for it. There is also a lot of action in this book so there is a lot of songs with heavy thumping beats on here as well, like Rammstein. Nightwish and Apocalyptica were really great to write to especially with all the paranormal elements. Imagine Dragons just fit Lucas' character really well.

1- Flesh and Blood- Johnny Cash
2- Bye Bye Beautiful- Nightwish
3- Scaretale- Nightwish
4- Fake Angels- Lovedrug
5- Feed The Fire- Combichrist
6- Retaliate- VNV Nation
7- Storytime- Nightwish
8- Bodies- Drowning Pool (A good song for when shit hits the fan)

Excerpt

"Just tell us what you need and we're your men."

Ryan's teasing, upbeat personality kept her smiling and she immediately felt at ease. "Get naked and act natural," she said, somehow managing to keep a straight face.

Max groaned. "Great. Now there's two of them. Don't give him permission, Mandy. We'll never get his clothes back on."

"Fine," she huffed, breaking out her best pout. "You will have to take your shirts off, though." Max flashed a flirtatious glance her way that left her blushing as he stripped his shirt off. Oddly, she knew he didn't mean it. Some people were overtly more sexual than others were. It was more of a vibe he owned. It was as if he couldn't help himself. Of course, the knowledge did nothing to stop her face from burning every time he turned it in her direction. The third time blood flooded her cheeks, she felt Knox's heat pressing into her back. Her heart slammed against her chest at the contact. He was everywhere. Overwhelming. Unmovable.

"He's not for you." His breath fanned across her neck as the whispered warning rang in her ears. The bite in his tone rolled over her skin. As he strode away, she watched the smooth movement of his body. Untamed. The word floated through her mind and she couldn't let it go. He was a predator. Each time he was near, a shot of adrenaline pumped through her veins when she survived the encounter. One day, she wouldn't.

After a few posed shots, Mandy focused on the action. "I'd love to get as many pictures as I can, if you want to take turns sparring. I'm not picky. However the three of you choose to pair up is fine with me."

Knox gave her a sharp nod, and Ryan came over to stand at her side on the edge of the mat. Squaring off, Max and Knox circled one another. Staring down at the digital screen, Mandy zoomed in on Knox and her chest tightened even as she continued snapping pictures.

"Better Max than me," Ryan said startling her with his tight tone.

Keeping her focus on her task, Mandy tried to keep the curiosity from showing in her voice. "Scared of getting your ass handed to you, huh?" she teased.

"An ass-kicking I can handle. I have no desire to die. Underground fighters train to compete with only one rule in mind. To the death. I mean, judging by Knox's lifestyle, the money is good, but it takes a certain mentality to go into every match to kill or be killed."

Mandy could hear her heart pounding in her ears. Her gaze slid over his body with a new eye as she searched for any truth to Ryan's claim. The light glimmered off the silver rings in his nipples. Sleek muscles flexed and rolled as he poised for any opening. There wasn't a hint of emotion on his face when he found one and took Max down to the mat. All the deep scars and bruises covering his body made themselves known in light of the new insight. Appearing content with a simple submission, Knox helped an unscathed Max to his feet.

"Oh, good. He didn't kill him. I am a bit attached to him, after all."

Knox looked in their direction at Ryan's words. Raw sensuality dripped from his pores. His eyes darkened with lust. Electricity charged the air between them. Excitement pounded through Mandy. Her nipples ached and a tingle began at the base of her spine.

Ryan cleared his throat. "Whoa," he muttered under his breath. "He's going to do such naughty things to you and I want details," he sang as he walked away heading in Max's direction.
