PRAISE FOR

Lancaster House

Wow. Where to start? Lancaster House was one of the most exhilarating, amazing books I've read all year. Maybe even ever. There is an undercurrent of menace and a totally creepy vibe running through the first half of the novel, one which kept me turning the pages and had my heart beating that little bit faster. From the opening pages, you're sucked right into the action, wondering what is going on and what will happen next. -Mandy of The Thoughts of a Girl

Wow! What an intense and refreshing book! It pulled me in form the very first page!It has everything from suspense to mystery and yes, of course, romance! This book kept me on edge by keeping me guessing to the very end! Lancaster House is not your same ole paranormal romance that we all have come to know and expect! Oh no! There was no way I could have guessed all the twists and turns that are held in this book! It left me surprised and very satisfied with the the whole story! I guarantee you have never read any other book that is remotely like this one (well at least I sure haven't and I have read a lot of books!) -Jess of Book Liaison

Andre and Zoe just give me chills at how beautiful they are together. Not to mention this story has every wow factor to it you can imagine. Twists and turns like you wouldn't believe. It was a great adventure and a job well done for Taylor Dean. I absolutely loved it and would recommend it to everyone. A true masterpiece. -Chasity of Batty for Books

Reading this book, I was not prepared for the strength of voice and the very real grit author Taylor Dean projects in her amazing story. Give me a great ghost story any day of the week. Fill it with kick butt heroines and a spicy romance and you have me at the word go. -Dana of Book Girl Knitting

Lancaster House is amazingly written and such an original story. I was Zoe and Andre's number one fan from the beginning, they are an amazing couple, and Taylor easily conveys their love in this story. -Brandy of Book Worm Brandy

The Dracula Chronicles: Bound By Blood

BOOK DESCRIPTION

The Dracula Chronicles: Bound By Blood

The Dracula Chronicles is the brilliant and terrifying new concept of Dracula. It is an epic journey through the ages where the forces of Light and Darkness struggle for supremacy until the Second Great War, as foretold in the Book of Revelations. This bitter feud began after the creation of mankind. Lucifer's jealousy leads to the First Great War of the angels. Hundreds of thousands of years on the feud simmers beneath the surface. It plots the course of history as we know it today. Both sides manipulate the major players through the centuries to seek an advantage over the other.

On a cold night in December 1431 in Sighisoara an old gypsy woman delivers a prophecy to the great Vlad Dracul. She tells him he is about to sire two sons, one an angel and the other a devil. He returns to his fortress just as his wife bears him a son, whom he names Vlad. In the very same moment across the country on the border between Transylvania and Hungary a gypsy girl gives birth to another son, Andrei. The die is cast. The twin souls are born. The young Vlad Dracula becomes the instrument of the forces of Darkness. To balance this, the baby Andrei is blessed by the angels and bestowed with awesome powers. These chronicles are their story.

CHAPTER ONE

Wallachia. The chapel at Snagov.
December 1476.

Dracula pulled open the door of the chapel. Relishing his newfound strength he ripped it clean off its hinges. He strode out into the night. All eyes fell on him and he glared back at his people with real menace. They were on their knees in the cold and the rain praying for the repose of his soul.

He laughed at the irony of it. The heady aroma of blood filled his nostrils. The blood of his people. It almost overwhelmed him. He felt the vibration of it in the ground beneath his feet as it pumped through their veins. With the taste of blood still in his mouth he would have to have more.

The smell of the blood of the dead reached him too. It was a repugnant scent. He realised then that only the blood of the living could satisfy his thirst. That was the price of immortal life. Lucifer warned him if he did not drink he would die. In taking Gabrul he realised that to drink he would have to kill. But the kill was good too. Looking at the crowd before him he did not care how many would need to die to satisfy his needs.

His people gazed at him in awe. Some noticed he had recovered fully from his injuries. They were no longer visible on his body. Others observed his naked state and skin that looked deathly pale. The green pupils of his eyes almost glowed in the dark. Two grotesque fangs hung down over his lower lip. They were long and sharp and a touch yellowed. His penis stood erect and long too. It twitched, filled with the blood of his recent kill.

"Thank God," one of the few women gasped. "He is alive."

He shot her a stern glance. If she did not look so frail he would have taken her there and then. His eyes scanned the crowd for a better target.

Cheers rang out from the rear. Vlad Dracula, the scourge of the Infidel, was alive and well. It elated them to see him. Those at the front did not make a sound.

The Maglak warriors knew the scene did not ring true. This man looked like their voivode, but they knew he was not. They placed their hands on the hilts of their swords, ready to fight the demon that stood in his place.

He could read the thoughts of everyone in the crowd. At first it was a jumble of sounds. A thousand noises in his head. He put his hands to his ears to try and drown them out. The cacophony almost overwhelmed him, as much as the initial scent of blood. He had to fight the urge to run away, but he could not leave. The aroma of the blood around him was far too strong to ignore.

When he looked into the eyes of any one person their thoughts became images in his mind. He heard the individual voices behind them. Perhaps it was something he could control after all. He stepped forward towards the crowd. But then an acute scent wafted on the breeze to his nose. Fresh blood. He turned his head in its direction. His sharp eyes focused on a wounded soldier lying further back.

He walked slowly through the crowd. The marble floor inside the chapel had scorched his feet. Now he found relief from the cold ground. How had Lucifer walked in there if I could not? Perhaps it was not for him to know. He looked beyond the people to the frozen lake. A walk on the ice appealed to him.

He stopped in front of the abbot. It amused him to scan the mind of the holy man and hear his silent words. The abbot looked up at him, knowing he was a demon. He grinned evilly at the little man, sensing his fear, and drawing pleasure from it. He thought of killing him there and then. But the blood of the soldier was too strong for him to resist. The scent grew stronger on the wind. He had to have it.

The people around him gasped. He vanished into thin air before their very eyes. In one bound he had leapt almost a hundred feet to the spot where the wounded soldier lay. He moved with speed that the naked eye could not match.

They looked about in an attempt to locate him. No one could see him at the base of the slope behind them. It was on the boundary where the island met the lake. Then one of the women screamed. The others followed the line of her arm as she pointed to the night sky.

The crowd looked up as one in horror. They saw Dracula hovering some twelve feet in the air above them. He had sunk his teeth deep into the soldier's thigh near to his wound. The soldier dangled upside down in his arms. He screamed for his comrades to save him.

Many of the men drew their swords. The bolder ones jumped up and swung them. When they did they found him just out of their reach. An archer removed an arrow from his quiver. He took careful aim and fired.

Without as much as a glance to the side, Dracula caught the arrow in his left hand. He held it there while he drank the soldier dry. The bloodless corpse dropped to the ground with a thud near a group of the women. They screamed as one at the face of the dead man. He looked up at them with eyes that could no longer see.

Dracula then turned to glare at the archer. The man felt a lump build in his throat. His limbs froze at the sight of those penetrating green eyes. He did not react when the arrow came back at him. It moved with real venom through the air. The vampire's throw drove it through his eye and out the back of his skull.

A chorus of screams rang out. Dracula hung in the air above the corpse and laughed. His people scrambled to get away from him. The urge to get off the small island overrode any other thought in their minds. They fell over each other in a blind panic, as the mass exodus moved to the frozen lake. Men and women alike slipped and lost their footing on the ice. The surface was slushy from the heavy rain. With the sudden weight on it cracks began to appear almost at once.

"Hurry!" someone screamed, as they looked down. "The ice is going to break!"

"Get off the ice!" another of the men urged.

With the need to escape the island so strong, few of the people heeded the warning. More and more bodies stepped onto the ice. Only when they all began to slip and slide on the surface did they realise the danger. Many tried in vain to go back. For them it was too late. The ice began to splinter and crack. Each new fissure filled the hearts of those on it with terror. Geysers of freezing water shot up into the air. In each spot the ice depressed and collapsed.

A thousand screams filled the air. In their dozens the people fell down into it. Their cries did not last. Each one of them went into shock the moment they took the plunge. Dracula watched as they disappeared from view. The freezing water snuffed out one heartbeat after another. He felt them succumb to their icy grave.

The chorus of sounds in his ears faded fast. The loud voices he could hear became whispers. Then, one by one, the icy water silenced them.

Only his loyal Maglak warriors and the monks remained on the island. They stayed, intent to fight this beast that possessed their master.

Dracula circled them from the air. He bellowed at them so loud it hurt their ears. "Run my friends! Run while you still can! It is him that I want!"

They turned to see the lone figure of the abbot. The little man shrunk further when he heard Dracula speak. All alone on his knees, he muttered a prayer to God to give him the strength he needed to make a stand. His courage soon returned, for when the vampire gazed down at him he held up a crucifix to try and ward him off.

"Get thee hence, foul demon!" he commanded. His voice showed conviction he did not know he had. He rose to his feet and held the crucifix up higher.

The Maglaks looked at each other. They waited for one of them to make a decision. In the end they sheathed their swords and ran into the chapel.

Dracula returned to the ground to face his new enemy. The abbot stood firm, the crucifix shaking in his hands. It seemed he might drop it at any time. As the clouds moved in the skies above them the light of the moon shone against the cold metal. The glare stung Dracula in both eyes. He hissed at the abbot in anger, a long stream of obscenities flowing from his mouth. He needed to break the resolve of the little man and get the icon from his hand. It proved to be an object of real power when the one holding it believed in it.

He stepped back a few paces from the abbot. His eyes remained trained on him, as those of a hawk waiting to swoop on its prey. It encouraged the holy man to come forward. His fear clouded his logic and he pressed on. He felt sure he had his enemy on the retreat. When a large gap opened between them he broke into a run.

Dracula stooped down and picked up a large rock. He grinned and then hurled it at the oncoming man. It struck his right foot with real force and crushed every tiny bone below the ankle. The abbot cried out in agony and fell down. The metal cross dropped from his grasp.

In the blink of an eye his enemy was upon him. He grabbed the abbot and dragged him away from it. The holy icon remained there on the ground, no longer of any use to its owner and no longer posing a threat to him.

"Do you still feel as brave, holy man?" he taunted him. "Is your sweet Jesus going to save you from me?"

"Get away, you foul beast," the abbot half shouted and half pled.

"I think not," Dracula grinned. "Not before you lie dead on the ground."

"In the name of Jesus Christ! Get thee from here!"

The words seemed to stun the vampire. He released his grip on the abbot and took a few steps back. A brief lull followed, though the abbot groaned at the pain in his foot. Dracula ignored him for a moment and looked about the area. It occurred to him that He might appear and save the little man. When He did not, he grabbed hold of the abbot once more.

"I would say He is not coming to your rescue, holy man. Perhaps He does not even exist. But I do, abbot. I exist. And I am the truth!"

He placed his palms against the abbot's temples. The little man screamed at the slightest exertion of pressure. He felt Dracula's cold breath against his neck. Fear gripped him inside. Was this to be the end?

"Worry not, holy man. I do not want your blood. It is your life that I want. Your precious Jesus can have your soul."

Dracula increased the pressure. He heard the crunch of bone as he crushed the abbot's skull like an egg. Brain tissue spilled as a mashed pulp all over his hands. It tempted him to eat, but he knew that he could not.

Through his conversion he knew certain things. The same way a newborn baby uses its instinct to find the nipple his instincts told him of his limitations.

He could not feed from the dead, unless it was his kill. Once the soul had left the body the flesh soured and the blood turned to poison. The Pope had blessed the abbot upon giving him his Holy Orders. Alive or dead, Dracula could not touch him. He could touch no man or woman blessed by the Pope's hand. If he had drunk from the abbot he would have endured a slow and agonising death. Consecrated blood would be acid in his veins. It would rot him from the inside out.

He heard the cries of thousands in the distance. It urged him to leave the island. He glided over the surface of the lake. The bodies of his people remained there, trapped beneath the new thin blanket of ice that had formed.

The sounds drew him back to the battlefield. He stopped in the spot where the Turks had ambushed and wounded him. The bodies of the dead lay strewn about where they had fallen. He trod through them, careful not to touch them with his feet.

All around the souls of the dead rose from their broken corpses. Dracula gasped at the sheer spectacle of it. He watched them rise up in the order they had perished. The souls hung in the air above each corpse. There they waited. Soon others would come and claim them.

Then they came. The White Ones and the Black Ones. They were the messengers and soul collectors from Heaven and Hell. A few of the Black Ones came close, but did not look at him. He held no interest for them.

He stayed for a time to watch. Those claimed by the Guardians of Hell screamed in desperation. They were aware now of the nightmare that awaited them.

When he came early, Lucifer spared Dracula this torment. He would not feel the agony of the Black Ones ripping at his flesh with their claws. Nor would he gaze into the fiery Abyss before they dragged him down. It sent a shiver through him.

One of the Guardians of Heaven drew close. Dracula stepped aside to avoid it. It was here to claim the soul of Ivan Olescu. He observed the absolute joy on the face of his old friend. The stresses of life and the pain of death had all left him now. It was a feeling Dracula knew he would never experience. The White One took Olescu by the hand and rose up towards the heavens. The vampire watched the ascent for a time.

Dracula did not find it a pleasant scene. He turned and disappeared into the night. When he had gone, Christ descended to the island and claimed the abbot.

INTERVIEW

Shane KP O'Neill

The Avid Reader:What inspired you to write The Dracula Chronicles: Bound By Blood?

Shane KP O'Neill: The book I have just released, in two volumes, is The Dracula Chronicles: Bound By Blood. I have always wanted to write a book or series about Dracula, but I wanted to write about the real Dracula as well as the mythical one. To achieve this successfully I knew I would have to do something new and different to what has gone before. So I devised a premise centred around the First Great War of the Angels, which resulted in Lucifer and many others being expelled from Heaven. I built my concept on Lucifer wanting to return there again. In the truce he agrees with God, it is decided he can contest the soul of every human on the earth. Should he at any time control more souls than God, then he can return again to Heaven and bring an end to all mankind. The Crucifixion leaves him back at square one so he devises the notion he can once again turn man against God through the destruction of the institution of the Catholic Church. To achieve this end he focuses on Dracula the man and as Dracula's moment of death is upon him, he creates Dracula the vampire to see through his dastardly plan. That was my inspiration for writing this book. It is the 3rd in the series, but begins the story with Dracula the vampire.

The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Shane KP O'Neill: At a very early age. It is what I have always wanted to do.

The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Shane KP O'Neill: When I was 6 years old my mother bought me a set of encyclopaedias for Christmas. I read them all within a couple of months. That is my first memory of reading a whole book, and there were 20 or so of those.

The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Shane KP O'Neill: Through my teenage years and beyond I always had a preference for the horror genre. As I grow older I read a lot of other books, and more often than not a good thriller.

The Avid Reader: What is your favorite book?

Shane KP O'Neill: My favourite book of all, the best I have read… would have to be Strumpet City by James Plunkett.

The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Shane KP O'Neill: I really love writers such as Stephen King, Dean Koontz, James Patterson, John Grisham and Jeffrey Archer… but one writer whose work has really grabbed me would be Carlos Luis Zafon. The books I have read of his were set in pre-WW2 Barcelona. I thought they were exceptional.

The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Shane KP O'Neill: I really thought long and hard about this question. I would probably choose to be in Munich in 1923. The reason would be to shoot Adolf Hitler in his prison cell.

The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Shane KP O'Neill: I can take long breaks from writing, but when I decide to sit down and get on with a project, it usually flows very well.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Shane KP O'Neill: Yes, we have one cat. A lazy black tom called, Jarle. That is Norwegian for Charles.

The Avid Reader: What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Shane KP O'Neill: My wife's pizza. She could become very wealthy selling that or any of the cakes she bakes. Aside from her delightful cooking and baking it would be any Italian food.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Shane KP O'Neill: Believe in yourself always and never listen to anyone who tries to discourage you or dampen your enthusiasm for your work. Make sure your work is the best it can be before you put it out there and just believe in yourself.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The Dracula Chronicles author

The author developed a fascination with Dracula from an early age. Like many others he was enthralled by Christopher Lee's portrayal of him on the big screen. It was in his late teens that he discovered Dracula the man and the love affair began from there. An avid historian, he studied the period in which the real historical Vlad Dracula lived, 15th Century Balkan, for many years. It followed from there then that with his love of writing he would always choose Dracula as his subject.

Away from writing, the author has a wide range of interests. He has lived and travelled all over the world. He has a love for all things historical, with a particular fascination for medieval Europe. Anywhere he travels he likes to search out locations with an historical interest. He is well read and in recent times has a preference for the work of James Patterson, Carlos Luis Zafon, John Grisham, Jeffrey Archer and Stephen King. He also keeps his library well stocked with historical texts.

For a time he played scrabble on the international stage and represented Wales at the 2007 World Championship in Mumbai, India. He has a real love of sport, most notably football, rugby union, cricket and boxing. His great loves in the football world are Manchester United, Glasgow Celtic, Internazionale and lowly Luton Town. His sporting heroes include George Best, David Beckham, Roy Keane, Ian Botham and Muhammad Ali. His only other activities away from these are long country walks and time spent with friends and family.

EXCERPT

ELIZA'S SHADOW

Ren laughed. "What are you doing? Just sit still and focus, why don't you?" He urged impatiently.

I pressed my crossed ankles together and my arms to my sides. "Ok, ok. I'm ready," I stammered.

I forced deep measured breaths until the cold air stilled the nervous bubbles bobbing around my head. My hands stretched around my knees and I flexed my fingers imagining the flame leaping from the tips. I turned inward imagining the spark growing inside of me. My mind's eye examined the small dot of electricity and watched it glow in the caverns of my mind.

Run! I commanded.

I followed the little spark as it hopped from one nerve to the next, racing down the length of my arm and felt it, hot and anxious to perform. Then something strong and sure told me the spark was ready. Without a conscious effort, my arm lifted from my side and my wrist snapped.

My eyes shot open. A small ball of light glowed bright against the darkness. I glanced up to find Ren's giddy grin.

We sat for several moments in reverent silence before Ren snatched the wriggling little light from my palm as easily as a frog snatches an insect.

He chuckled and tossed it above our heads. The small light bounced in the air like a yo-yo before settling suspended above our heads.

"Wow! How'd you do that?" I exclaimed.

"Clean flames will do just about anything you want them to," he said.

"Can I touch it again?" I asked tentatively.

Ren shrugged. "Sure, it's your flame," he said and sank back against the cluster of pipes, a pleased smile lingering on his lips.

I reached into the air and plucked the tiny blaze from its perch. I held the flame in my hand admiring its dance.

"It's hot," I said wincing.

Ren inched toward me and slid his hand beneath mine. His palm was soft against my knuckles. Then his fingers closed around my wrist and he pulled my hand toward his lowered face. My fingertips grazed the scruff of his chin sending a tingle up my arm. Our eyes met across the glowing expanse of my palm.

"Even the most magical things can burn," he said tensely, holding my gaze.

My cheeks flushed hot under his intense stare.

"Only… if you let them," I responded, carefully controlling my breath.

"Easier said than done," he said with a sigh. I blew softly across my palm. The flame flickered and disappeared into a wisp of smoke.

MY REVIEW

ELIZA'S SHADOW

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I received a copy of Eliza's Shadow from the author for review.

When Eliza was a girl her mother disappeared under suspicious circumstances. A "neighbor" is called in to take care of Eliza until her mother is found. Eliza always liked and loved the "neighbor" very much. But after Eliza starts having bad dreams the "neighbor" sends her to live with her Aunt. The "neighbor" believes that sending her away is the best thing for Eliza. She has to keep Eliza hidden to keep her safe. She is a very sweet little woman and Eliza is very sad to leave her to go stay with an Aunt that she has never met.

After Eliza moves to Port Rune and meets her Aunt she comes to care and love her a lot and would do anything for her. She also likes her new life and all the friends she has made while living in the town of Port Rune. Her life is going just great until a new guy Ren moves in town and starts going to her school. Ren introduces her to a whole new way of life. A life filled with magic and magic places. Ren is sent to help and guide Eliza in how to use her magic. A magic that she never new existed much less knew she had. Eliza is attracted to Ren as he is to her which is not a good thing. Ren is not suppose to get involved with the one he is sent to help and protect.

If you like witchy things and things that go bump in the night then you would really love Eliza's Shadow. It is filled with all of those things and more. Will Eliza find her mother? Does she find out where her mother disappeared to on that eventful night during the big storm? Why did her mother disappear? Who is Ren exactly and why was he the one sent to help her? What is Ren suppose to help her with? To find out you will need to get your hands on a copy of Eliza's Shadow to find out. It is a very great book.

When a drunken man tries to attack Dana (the human sister) Ani (the vampire sister) protects her sister with all of her ferocious power.

However, when the vampire's leader Donovan finds out about the public display he calls for the sisters to be assassinated for disobedience. Ani and Dana now are in for the fight of their lives to protect each other as well as the lives of their dedicated friends who have joined them on their mission for survival. If Dana and Ani can make it through this time of uncertainty, Ani can take her new place as vampire queen. Soul Sisters
Chapter 6
1915 New York City

Bryson and Dana walked arm and arm down the blustery New York street laughing about the Christmas party they had just left. The snow was fresh and powdery. Neither of them felt the icy cold snowflakes floating down and speckling their coats because they were wrapped in the warmth of each other's company.

"Did you see how Charles acted after taking that last shot of whiskey?" Dana asked.

Bryson could not contain his laughter thinking about their friend's drunkenness. Everyone who had been at the party was probably laughing about it on their way home, too, particularly the part when Charles took off his pants and danced on top of the piano. Bryson laughed so hard people gave them odd passing glances.

"Yes." Bryson gave a bright smile and grabbed her face to kiss her as they stood in the middle of the sidewalk. He wanted people to stop and stare at his beautiful wife. He wasn't afraid to show her off every chance he got. The women cooed softly at the sweetness of the moment while the men ushered their women forward murmuring about how indecent their public display of affection was for the community. Truthfully they just didn't want their wives to get any ideas.

It took Dana a few seconds to catch her breath. She couldn't believe he would do something that indecent in public. It didn't matter to her, however, because it felt way too good to be wrong. They stepped off the curb without a care in the world; Dana held onto Bryson's arm tightly and could not stop staring into his eyes.

A few seconds later Dana felt a sharp pain and a crushing blow to her arm. It was as if a freight train slammed into her right side. She instantly started sobbing from the pain and confusion of the situation. She felt like a block of ice was on top of her chest as she lay sprawled out on the ground. Her legs were straight out together in front of her but her arms were stretched out wide, going in two different directions. Her head turned slowly to the left when she heard a woman screaming and she saw Bryson on the ground with his eyes wide open. She blinked a few times to clear up her vision and then she spotted a pool of blood circling his head like a flowing halo.

Dana tried to push against the woman lying on top of her but the person was impossible to move no matter how hard she tried.

"You don't want to see this, you're safe now," the woman said softly in her ear; she sounded just like her.

"Soul sister?" Dana asked as she felt herself losing consciousness. She heard the chaos of the world going on around her but then she slipped into a black void. When she came to in a small nearby hospital she was disoriented and feeling miserable. There was a dull ache in her head and the vision in her right eye was blurry. She thought she saw a petite woman standing in the doorway, maybe she knew what had happened to Bryson.

"Where is my Bryson? Is he OK? What happened?"

The woman walked over to the bed and placed a hand on her head. Dana could see the woman was wearing a nurse's outfit and she guessed she was in a hospital. The woman's hand felt ice cold against her burning flesh.

"I'm sorry to tell you, ma'am, but your husband was hit by a moving vehicle. He suffered a bad head injury and he is no longer alive. I am so sorry."

"No, wait. We were just coming back from a Christmas party. When did this happen?"

"You stepped off the side walk with your husband, ma'am. Apparently you could not see the car and the car could not see you. A woman who looked oddly like you pushed you out of the way and saved your life. Your husband didn't make it. I'm very sorry. Would you like some water or a cup of juice?"

"No, no, thank you. Can I see him at least?"

"Not now honey. I really think you should get some rest. There's a young woman who is here to see you. She says she's your sister. Are you ready to see her?"

Dana coughed deeply and felt a liquid build up in her throat that she quickly swallowed back down; she was afraid to see who it was.

"OK," was all she could seem to get out of her throat.

Her soul sister quietly stepped into the room as she faced the wall. She didn't want the woman to see her nervousness or confusion. As much as she wanted to hug her sister she also wanted to punch her.

"Why didn't you save my husband?" Dana asked choking back tears but keeping a straight face. As the tears filled up her eyes, her cheeks began to sting and swell.

"The car came so fast. I didn't have time to save you both. I've seen you with Bryson before and I know how much you loved him, I'm so very sorry."

"What is your name?" Dana asked, sitting up against the pillow.

"Ani," She said softly.

"Ani, I don't think I want to live much longer. I sold my soul to save my husband's life and Donovan took him away from me. I really don't see any reason to live anymore."

Ani sat down in a chair and moved closer to the side of the bed. She placed her hand on Dana's head and felt that she had a slight temperature. She would notify a nurse as soon as she left the room. Ani loved her sister and if her sister died then she died too.

"Donovan had nothing to do with what happened. Your husband's time came up again and he was taken. Donovan didn't order his death. I'm sure he is very concerned about this and knows how much this hurts you. He is good at feeling things like this."

"Your kind feels? You don't want me to kill myself because then you will die too. Frankly, I don't care what happens to you right now. You're such a small fragment of me; I don't even think you're real. This is just a bad nightmare. I'll wake from it; I'll be at home warm and safe with my parents. Bryson never actually existed and I sure as hell know you don't either."

Dana turned her head back to the wall and let the tears flow freely down her face. She placed her hand over her mouth to stifle the cries; her heart felt like it had broken into a million pieces. Now, she couldn't live for anybody else but herself. Dana saw the look of despair in her sister's face but it wasn't enough for her to let her soul sister into her life.

"I'll never turn my back on you when you need me, no matter how far away you are or how much danger you're in. I know we're supposed to be twins but I feel like you're my baby sister." She gave a light chuckle and then headed for the door. "I'll be back to visit you tomorrow, and the next day and the next day. Even if you never want to see me it's OK, but I'm not going to be without you any longer. I love you way too much."

"I don't care if you come back a million times. I will never talk to you again. Get the hell out of my room!" Dana threw a glass at Ani's head. Ani moved her head slightly to the left as it flew into the wall and shattered into tiny pieces. She took a deep breath and nodded her head up and down slowly; she had to give her more time. Ani had been programmed to take on the evil ways of the world but Dana's rose-colored glasses had just been stepped on.

MY REVIEW

Soul Sisters

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a copy of Soul Sisters from the author for a review via Full Moon Bites Book Tours.

Dana a young woman is on her honeymoon and goes for a walk with her new husband. While they are out enjoying the beautiful day and their time of just being together her husband has an accident. Dana has been staying by his side day and night waiting to see if he will live or die. When she can't take it any longer she runs out to be by herself for a while. On her walk she meets a stranger who says he can save her husband and she will become immortal. Dana will do anything to save her husband. She ask what she would have to do to save him.

The strange whose name is Donovan tells her that he is a vampire. He explains that he will save her husband for her soul. Why does he want or need her soul? She will become immortal and he will give her a soul sister who will be a vampire. Her soul sister will always protect her and keep her safe.

Dana meets her soul sister for the first time a very short time after her husband gets better. You see the reason she meets her then is because she is watching out for Dana and has always been near. She saves Dana from being ran over in the street but she doesn't have time to save her husband. Dana loved her husband so much that although she is over a 100 years old she has never had many relationships. She likes her life and she lives it like going to work and coming home to her own place and reading her books.

Her soul sister Ani is a little different she likes living life on the wild side. Ani loves her sister so much that she will do anything and I do mean anything to keep her sister safe but that is why they are soul sisters. One night Ani talks Dana into going out to a bar and having a little fun. When a man attacks Dana, Ani kills him and there is a witness to the murder which leads to big trouble for the twins. Vampires are not supposed to kill humans or do anything that will expose them.

Donovan comes to Dana to get her to talk to Ani so that she will turn herself over to him. He wants to kill Ani. If he kills her then Dana will die also and neither one of them want to die. So Dana, Ani, a werewolf and an ex-boyfriend of Ani's all set out to kill Donaovan before he can kill Ani. Ani has to be the one who kills him and after she kills him she will be the vampire queen. She will take over Donovan's place as the head vampire. She will rule over all the vampires. Will Ani kill the head vampire Donavan? Will she become the vampire queen?

I know I have said it over and over but this time it is actually the truth. I have never ever read a vampire book like this one before. The way that vampires are created is so very unique. I have never read a vampire book where vampires were created in this way. They maybe one out there but I have not read it. I loved how they were created it gives the vampire genre a whole new twist. The ending is very amazing. While I knew how it would end I never in a million years expected it to end quite like it did.

Review: Hush, Hush By Becca Fitzpatrick

Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1)

Title: Hush, Hush

Author: Becca Fitzpatrick

Series: Hush, Hush #1

Published: October 13th 2010

Paperback

Pages: 391

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS

Hush, Hush

When Nora and Patch are forced together as lab partners, Nora would rather fall to her death than put up with his elusive answers to her questions, his teasing, and his infuriatingly handsome face and hypnotizing eyes. It seems Patch was put on earth just to drive her crazy.

But before long, Nora's defenses start to break down as her curiosity about Patch heats up. Why does he always seem to be wherever she is and know exactly what she's thinking? How does he know what to say to both attract and repulse her? And what is up with those V-shaped scars on his chiseled back?

As their connection grows stronger, Nora's own life becomes increasingly fragile. Nora needs to decide: Is Patch the one who wants to do her harm or the one who will keep her safe? Has she fallen for one of the fallen?

MY REVIEW

Hush, Hush

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review.

Nora is just like any other 16 year old girl she likes all the cute and sexy guys. The only problem is that she is shy and has not found that special guy. She also takes all her classes very seriously. She doesn't like to take risk unlike her best friend Vee. Vee gets dates for Nora in order to get Nora out of the house on occasion. Vee has a very out going type of personality where Nora likes to keep to herself. Vee can talk Nora into doing just about anything she wants her to do.

Nora meets Patch in Biology class one day when the teacher changes the seating arrangement. Their assignment is to find out everything that they can about their new partners. Nora doesn't like the fact that now she and Patch are partners. Patch is always very evasive with the questions that she has to ask him. And oh does this make Nora very angry with him. He seems to know a lot about her but she wonders how he knows so much about her.

Nora likes Patch but she can't figure out for the life of her why she is so attracted to him. I mean he want answer any of her questions so how is she supposed to do her biology assignment? What does he have to hide?

Nora thinks that Patch is following or stalking her. Where ever she goes Patch always turns up. Someone is trying to kill her and at times she thinks that it is Patch but after she gets to know him she knows he would never hurt her. So who is trying to kill her? Why is Patch stalking her or is he?

I read a lot of reviews of Hush, Hush before purchasing it and after each review that I read I kept thinking man I got to get my hands on a copy of this one. And boy I am I glad that I did. Hush, Hush is one those books that really does keep you hanging on and wanting more. You think you have it all figured out. You know who it is that is trying to kill Nora and then you turn the page and your like it's not him? You are surrounded by mystery through the whole book all the way to the end. When you can't figure out the "who dun it?' part until the end of the book now to me that is some awesome witting.

EXCERPT

Velvet

I’d been staring at the vast body of water surrounding the ship when I was startled to find a woman, heavy with child standing by my side. She wore a red gown that gathered beneath her ample breasts. The gown fell freely, billowing against her in the brisk sea air. Her red hair hung in two braids threaded with crimson leather. Upon turning her head, small red jewels, woven throughout her hair, caught the light.

“The sea is dark as the grave, and as good at keeping secrets.”

“Who are you?” I asked. Since I’d boarded the ship the day before, I’d conversed only with Seton and my brother, Sylvain. I’d yet to earn my sea legs and everything seemed strange.

“I am Adis, wife of Doremme, the man whose ship you stand upon.” She came closer. “Secrets are only as powerful as those who carry them and the sea is a perfect place to bury what haunts you.”

“You talk as though you know me, and as I am a stranger on this ship, I know this cannot be.” I was about to bow and take my leave when she laughed.

“Fear is not your way, tailor. You were the royal tailor of the king whose land we left, were you not?”

Were the royal tailor… Her words struck at my heart. I felt this truth so keenly that I gripped the ship railings to steady myself.

“I fear only those who know more of me than I wish, and while I am indebted to your husband for granting us passage, I am in no mood for games.”

Though her laughter died, a smile lingered on her lips. “I mean you no harm, but you seem to have caught the interest of my child.”

I looked at her swollen belly. “Your child?”

“This is my third and final.” Her hands caressed her stomach. “She will be a visionary, and in her birth, I will know death. Not unlike your mother. She bore your brother, who I am told is also a visionary. And blind. How fortunate. Those who are physically afflicted see further than those who aren’t. Nature seldom curses without blessing at the same time.”

This time I laughed. “Perhaps you should ask my brother if he thinks himself fortunate. Or better, summon my father from the grave. Ask if he wished his wife lived and his son had sight!”

After this outburst, we grew silent, but the woman did not leave my side.

I closed my eyes and swallowing hard, felt the pull of the stiff fabric scrap tied around my throat. The raucous shrieks of hungry gulls overhead made me look up into the sky. I watched as the birds swooped and mercilessly chased each other. I envied their flight, but cringed beneath their cries. Behind my eyes, I saw white peacocks, heard their shrieks, and felt the crawl of disease. I shuddered, shook my head of further memory, and let my eyes fall upon the distant horizon. Would I never know peace? Or would memories chase me like the gulls chase one another, endlessly hungry and insistent?

When Adis eventually spoke, these questions and memories faded away. “True, your father suffered, but his gifts as a tailor delivered him from the grief of losing his wife and gave him the strength to care for a blind son.”

The truth in her words, stirred long buried pain. While Sylvain’s blind, tumultuous, and bloody welcoming into the world killed our mother, it also strengthened my father’s resolve to care for us at any cost.

I know not what would have become of us without King Killian’s demand for my meager abilities as a tailor. We would have been lost, we owe our king a great debt and service.

My father told this to me one day when I found him bleary eyed and exhausted at his work. I could remember the way his hands trembled, the nerves in his fingers twitching involuntarily as he struggled with buttonholes on a vest meant for Killian’s nephew.

When his voice vanished, a bitter sadness rose in me as the sea’s waves crashed against the ship.

“Say no more to me. If you were not mistress of this vessel I would think unkindly of you!”

Before she could reply, music, soft and familiar reached us. I knew the player of the tune, knew it because my heart leapt at its playing as it did the first time I’d heard it.

“Someone has leant Seton a lyre. How beautifully he plays, and how lucky his hands are healing. He is a man of passion and strength. It is no wonder you found love with him, as he with you.” Adis placed a hand on my wrist. “I am no witch or visionary. My daughter beckons from my womb. I am but a vessel as is this ship. She is my most precious cargo, and anxious to know life. You must forgive me if I have angered you. Her voice comes from my lips, so I am often unaware of what I say.”

The music rose, fell away only to start again, and as it did, I examined the woman, and seeing her kind face, put a tired hand over hers. “There is nothing to forgive. I am the one speaking from another place.”

“Your voice comes from the shores we have left behind. It would be wise to find a new sound to carry with you.”

Beyond her I saw my brother sitting cross-legged, his fox playing in his lap. He seemed peaceful. “I keep staring into the sea hoping it will take the past from me, but it seems I may never know peace.”

“In time, you shall. Nothing is forever, except the sea.” Adis cast her eyes from my face to the expanse of water surrounding us. “She is our eternal mother and will listen to you forever.”

Behind Adis’s rather mystical analogy, I had a sobering thought. “There is so much uncertainty in the world. I wonder if I have done right. Perhaps I could have done better.”

“You left a land soon to be riddled with illness. This alone made it the wisest decision for you all.”

Her knowing so much of my life discomforted me. “Must everything be told in portents and omens? What of reality? What of truth?”

“Ahh truth. It is a funny thing and varied as the sunlight on the waves. I am a merchant’s wife and have seen much in this world. Men who love men, women who love women, even a man who loved a woman he believed to have been transformed into a goat by the tree witches in the north! The world is wide and there are many lands with many kinds of people. You will see soon enough.”

“I have not heard talk of the tree witches since I played at my mother’s feet. Surely they no longer exist!” I replied, incredulously.

“I cannot say. Who can say if they exist or ever really did?” Adis said.

I sighed resignedly. “I have lived a small life in the court of a small king, and I carry the wounds of that life as sure as I carry the clothes on my back.”

“It is not for me to say what you carry with you, but I can give you a piece of advice not from my daughter, but from my own lips: Stop trying to escape what haunts you, instead think long and hard about it. Every detail, every nightmare, dream and transgression. Leave nothing out. Do this until you have expelled the poison, and when there is no more, you will find yourself exactly where you are supposed to be.”

With these words, Adis left me. I stood alone, listening to the sea, the sound of Seton’s music, the distant cries of the squabbling gulls, and my eyes focused on the unknown horizon.

What led me to find myself on the water, destination unknown? The life I knew was gone, broken, and mercurial as the swirling foam frothing in the ships crushing wake.

I would tell myself the story, if only to steal a glimpse at the unknown ending.

How would my tale end? Beginnings are for children; fairy stories begin with “Once upon a time.” Once upon a time there was a tailor. He knew string, scissor, and pin. He did not know his heart.

My breath caught. Oh, my heart. Once upon a time, there was a heart and it was not free… I was a tailor. Once…

No, it cannot begin this way. My heart knew dangerous things, but now it was free and in it’s new freedom I allowed it to teach me the way my story should begin and knew by wild instinct, if I followed it, I would know the ending, a true, and dare I hope, happy ending.

With no one to listen but the dark sea and the wheeling, crying gulls, I closed my eyes and let my thoughts move with the undulating water, its gentle rocking seeming to urge the release of my torment.

The castle, dark and glorious, loomed up in my memory…

INTERVIEW

Xavier Axelson

The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Xavier Axelson: I started writing in elementary school, but I don’t think I realized I was a writer until I hit high school. Writing is a constant in my life, no matter what job I may be doing, I’m always writing.

The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Xavier Axelson: Oh wow, I think it would have to be in second grade. I remember The Lorax being my favorite book around that time, so I’ll go with that.

The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Xavier Axelson: All genres. I love reading anything I can get my hands on.

The Avid Reader: What is your favorite book?

Xavier Axelson: Watership Down by Richard Adams

The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Xavier Axelson: I have many, but I would have to say Richard Adams endures. His books speak to a very true and personal part of myself.

The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Xavier Axelson: The court of Henry VIII, who wouldn’t want to be involved in all that intrigue and decadence?

The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Xavier Axelson: It isn’t necessarily difficult but it is always challenging. Writing is opening yourself up to creativity and that can be exhausting, physically and mentally.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Xavier Axelson: I have many black cats and one huge white rabbit.

The Avid Reader: What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Xavier Axelson: Rice pudding.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Xavier Axelson: Stay true to your voice and follow where that voice leads.

The Golden Chalice

“What I want is to stop your pain. If I could have my wish it would be…I’d want our child to have lived.” His expression stilled and grew serious.

“Let’s be honest, Lee. Any child you and I have we’d destroy, after we destroyed each other.” She made to move around him and he stepped with her, blocking her pass. “Lee, move.”

“Take it back!” He frowned with cold fury.

Michelle adjusted her smile. “Why?”

“Don’t you ever dismiss our child’s death. Take it back!” he said through clenched teeth.

Michelle, shaken by the threat in his tone, had to lower her gaze. “Okay.”

Lee’s voice dropped an octave when he spoke again. “We lost our baby. It’s my fault. I should have protected you, trusted my instincts.”

“Lee, please stop.”

“I’ll make them pay. I’ll kill ’em all—”

“Stop it, dammit!” Lee blinked at her, confused. “Stop, okay? No more violence. I can’t take it.”

He touched her and she shrugged off his hand. Lee persisted and she was forced into his arms. Soon hers, of their own accord, were circling his waist. He kissed the top of her head. Stroked her hair.

“My first priority is you. I had to make sure you were okay, Michelle. Now that you are we’re starting again. Nothing has changed between us.” He relaxed his hold on her and brushed her cheeks with the backs of his fingers. She tensed over how soothing his touch was. With mild force, Lee grabbed her face in both hands. He brought his forehead down to hers until their skulls met. Michelle winced over the burn it drove through her brow, and gripped his wrist, trying hard to free herself. But his lips covered hers before she could manage the break. A crushingly needy kiss followed. She softened under its weight.

“Forgive me.” He breathed into her mouth, trying to pry her lips apart for another kiss. “Damn it, Michelle, forgive me, baby. Don’t make me beg.”

Michelle lowered her hands from his wrists. The caress of his lips inspired a trickle of love, sparking forbidden desires for him in her heart. What the hell was wrong with her? How could she even stomach the thought of them, together, now? Yet she could. It would be her secret truth. She loved him so badly, the truth hurt.
