Book Tour + #Giveaway: The Well-Tempered Violinist by Barbara T. Carlton @RABTBookTours

Book 1 of The Gift

Historical Fiction

Date to be Published: November 5, 2025

Publisher: Acorn Publishing

Marthe Adler dreams of making history as a great violinist. But in 1905 Germany, tradition and deep-seated prejudice against women musicians stand in her way. To make matters worse, her beloved father’s sudden death shatters her family’s comfortable life, pushing them to the edge of poverty.

But the violin Marthe’s father left her is a constant reminder of the profound bond between them, and it gives her the strength to begin healing. When the Köln Conservatory offers her an unexpected scholarship, she seizes her chance to reach for excellence.

Under the rigorous tutelage of Professorin Wolff, and subjected to predatory harassment by a fellow student determined to destroy both her self-worth and her chances of success, Marthe quickly learns she will need more than motivation and talent to rise to the top.

Filled with heart, wit, and music, The Well-Tempered Violinist is an enduring coming-of-age tale about an artist striving for greatness against enormous odds.

Interview with Barbara T. Carlton

What is your favorite part of the book?

I really wanted to try to give my protagonist, the young violinist Marthe Adler, a musical education that would demonstrate to readers just how hard musicians work to create the music they play for us. No matter how gifted you are, there is hard work and repetition, frustration and fatigue as well as the transcendent joy of making music. But I didn’t want to drown readers in minutiae—this is not a technical manual; it’s a story of determination, perseverance, and resilience. I think I threaded that needle to create a believable world and a multi-layered story that does justice to her, to her times, and to her passion for music.

Does your book have a lesson? Moral?

The best answer I can think of comes from Oma Judith, the grandmother of two of Marthe’s classmates. Oma Judith is a true Bohemian. She is a poet whose poetry tells the truth of a woman’s life (an unknown subject in the 19th century when she wrote it). In her youth around 1870, she lived in an artists’ commune (“…there was a fair amount of sex…”) and later raised her daughter as a single mother. Oma Judith encourages Marthe to go after what she needs despite the rigid conventions and prejudices she encounters. One of her greatest pieces of wisdom is: “Never be afraid to kick a stupid rule in the teeth.”*

*(Later, she adds, “Just don’t be surprised if it kicks back.”)

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Every character is a synthesis of aspects of real people and the author’s imagination. Marthe and I have some qualities in common, manifestly NOT including the ability to play the violin. (Marthe: gifted and passionate violinist. Me: Suzuki method dropout, 1964.) I studied piano for fourteen years, however, and loved it. Several characters contain bits and pieces of my children, other family members, people I’ve known. Some are people I would really LOVE to know! Some characters’ names (not all, by any means) derive from the names of people who inspired them. One is deliberately ironic—not saying whose. That will become more apparent in later books. But no reader is in danger of encountering a character and saying, “Hey, that’s me!”

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?

Although I’m very fond of Marthe, I’m constantly intrigued by Anni. She is in every way her own person: a firebrand, outspoken, brave, and often a bit of a steamroller. She refuses to let the prejudices of her world define her. The minute her school opens its fencing club to girls, she joins and begins her lifelong passion for fencing. Anni is most alive in the world of foils, helmets, quilted armor, and sweat. Marthe muses that Anni would have made a magnificent warrior princess, if only we had need of one in our humdrum modern age.

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

I made Reinhold von Marburg rather dislikeable, and I wouldn’t want to be stuck on a desert island with him. But I also tried to give some clues as to why he is the way he is. He embodies a class rigidity and misogyny that was sufficiently common, even in the early 20th century, that it wasn’t even conscious. Sadly, his type still walks among us today, making trouble at every step.

What would the “Stroller kids” in your book have to say about you?

I might remind her of Frau Apfelbaum, Oma Judith’s daughter and the mother of two of Marthe’s classmates: an artist who has temporarily set her art aside to raise a family. Marthe takes that choice for granted until—oops, never mind. That’s Book II! 🤫

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

The Gift is a quadrilogy, a story that takes four books to tell: Marthe Adler’s life, the history she makes as a pioneering woman in the rigid and prejudiced world of classical music, the history she survives as the modern world emerges from the ashes of the old, the barriers she breaks down, and the profound consequences of her life for her daughter and granddaughter as the 20th century unfolds. Each book will make more sense if you’ve read the previous ones first. So, I hope readers will do that.

The Man by Her Door

Zoya Volkova Crime Thrillers #3

by Nadya Frank

Published: October 31, 2025

Genre: Murder, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense

Blurb:

When a 20-year-old Alisa Feoktistova disappears from her own stairwell, leaving behind only a pool of her blood, it becomes clear a new serial killer is on the loose in Moscow. He’s believed to have taken at least three people before Alisa, each time marking the crime scene with an ample amount of victim’s blood, which earned him a nickname Bloodletter.

Are all his victims dead? Or is there a chance Bloodletter keeps them alive, despite the blood loss?

One thing is for sure: private investigator Zoya Volkova won’t let go of this case. Years ago, her little brother went missing in a similar manner, a pool of blood glistening in the middle of the empty apartment. What if it wasn’t the doing of Zoya’s mother, like the judges decided, but of some bloodthirsty monster who avoided the justice then and now kills again?

My Review:

The Man by Her Door is an excellent addition to the Zoya Volkova Crime Thrillers series by Nadya Frank. From the very first pages, I was drawn into The Man by Her Door, captivated by the suspense and intrigue that kept me on the edge of my seat. I found myself engrossed, unable to put the book down as the plot unfolded.

The Man by Her Door is an incredibly captivating tale that held my attention until the very end, with no shortage of excitement in between, thanks to the twists and turns that kept me pondering the identities of those behind the disappearances.

I was kept on my toes throughout, as Zoya pursued the missing individuals and the culprit behind the crimes. The vivid descriptions were so well-crafted that I could easily visualize everything in my mind. I could picture the crime scene clearly, as if I were actually present.

The characters are all quite fascinating and appear very relatable. They seem like individuals you would enjoy meeting and would easily get along with, without any issues.

I can hardly contain my excitement for the next installment in the Zoya Volkova Crime Thrillers to discover how Zoya's journey unfolds.

I strongly recommend picking up a copy of The Man by Her Door for more thrilling escapades in the realm of Zoya Volkova!

Review: Whistle Stop Murder (A Small Town Cozy Mystery #3) by Gemma Harper

Whistle Stop Murder

A Poppy James Cozy Mystery #3

by Gemma Harper

Published: October 31, 2025

Genre: Cozy Mystery, Cozy Animal Mystery, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Short Reads

Blurb:

A quiet town, a ghostly whistle, and one café owner with a nose for trouble…

When a midnight train whistle echoes through Willowbrook’s sleepy streets, Poppy James—book-loving café owner and accidental sleuth—knows it’s more than a trick of the wind. Her suspicions are confirmed when Henry Caldwell, a retired railway inspector with a reputation for secrets, is found dead by the abandoned tracks, a chalk mark scrawled beside him and a crumpled scrap of paper in his hand.

Armed with her trusty beagle Midsip, glitter-obsessed best friend Nadine, and history-buff Theo, Poppy dives into a tangle of ledgers, tunnels, and old town scandals. Everyone in Willowbrook seems to have something to hide—especially the two people Henry crossed paths with just before everything went wrong: Mark Jeffries, the carpenter Henry hired to “fix” a hidden room in the old depot the night he disappeared; and Clara Benton, whose gossip column ran a blind item that outed Henry’s sealed dealings—and gave someone a reason to silence him.

As clues mount and the Circle’s shadow grows, Poppy finds herself toe-to-toe with secrets worth killing for. If she can’t piece together the truth, Willowbrook’s quiet nights may never be safe again.

My Review:

Whistle Stop Murder is the third book in the Poppy James Cozy Mystery series by Gemma Harper. Whistle Stop Murder starts off with the death of Henry Caldwell, a retired railway inspector. The local sheriff says it was an accident that he tripped on the train track, but Poppy, Theo, and Nadine don’t believe it for one minute.

Poppy sets out to prove that it was not an accident and finds a town full of secrets, deadly secrets, unfortunately for Henry. Henry was a nice, quiet man with secrets of his own. Undoubtedly, someone revealed one of those secrets, and now Henry has paid the price for that secret.

The people of Willowbrook have numerous secrets they want to stay hidden. How much farther are they willing to go to ensure they stay that way?

Whistle Stop Murder kept me engaged from the beginning when Poppy saw Henry lying there beside the train tracks. The mystery and suspense that followed had me hooked, not able to turn the pages as fast as I wanted, leaving me with many questions that I wanted/needed answers to as quick as I could get them.

I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Whistle Stop Murder today to find out what happened to Henry.

Excerpt

Crimson Retribution by C. L. Hart

Hashim led Donata to a clear spot where a cluster of trees blocked the wind. After relieving herself, she returned to his side.

"All right, let's see the fabulous view you've been raving about."

"Would you like a pair of binoculars?"

"Certainly. I've always enjoyed pretending I was a bird flying above the world."

"Or an angel," Hashim proposed.

"I imagine I have a few more miles left in this aging body before God or whoever calls me home."

"Darling, you're always my angel."

"What are you angling for with all this flattery, Hashim?"

"I'm only trying to make things right, my love. I don't want a divorce. I love you, and even though Libby is biologically Javed's daughter, I've always thought of her as my own."

"No matter what happens between you and me, you will always be Libby's father. I'm open to working things out, but you need to understand that I will not put up with any more abuse, either verbal or physical, and I won't abide any more cheating."

Hashim handed Donata the binoculars.

"Gaze through your magic spectacles and tell me what appears to your wondering eyes, my snow queen."

"I believe this is what Santa sees from his sleigh as he swoops down on a quiet Christmas Eve night. There are fantastical decorations, and the multicolored lights make everything look festive."

"You always had an amazing imagination."

Hashim reached behind the seat of the sleigh, retrieving an axe.

"Picture being here with Libby on Christmas Eve. Imagine walking out on the deck with her to marvel at the lights and look for Santa flying overhead."

"Oh, there's a house with a life-size Santa on the roof! He and the reindeer seem so real. Rudolph's nose flashes bright red, and Santa is waving to the people below. I can almost hear Christmas carols playing and taste hot spiced cider."

Book Blitz: Book of Me by Kevin Hipes @RABTBookTours

The Life and Times of Kevin Hipes, the New York Forrest Gump

Memoir

Date Published: July 24, 2025

From the streets of Queens to the deck of an oil tanker in the Caribbean—meet Kevin Hipes, the real-life New York Forrest Gump.

Book of Me is not your average memoir. It’s a laugh-out-loud, tear-in-your-eye, one-of-a-kind true story collection from a man who has lived more lives than most of us can imagine. Factory worker. Hippie. Banker. Entrepreneur. Rockstar (sort of). Preacher. Politician. Oil tanker owner. Cancer survivor. Bipolar truth-teller. Kevin Hipes has worn all these hats—and more.

Told with warmth, humor, and heart, Kevin’s stories come alive in this unconventional autobiography. Originally recorded as a series of YouTube episodes on his channel Planet Hipes, these 66 episodes have been transformed into a compelling, easy-to-read book that invites you to laugh, cry, reflect, and recognize a bit of yourself along the way.

What you’ll find inside:
✅ Hilarious tales from childhood in Queens
✅ Life lessons learned the hard way—and the funny way
✅ Private struggles and surprising triumphs
✅ A faith-driven journey of self-discovery and humility
✅ A reminder that we’re all “special” in our own unique way

Whether you're looking for a good laugh, a touch of inspiration, or a wildly entertaining ride through 70 years of true-life adventures, Book of Me will leave you smiling, thinking, and maybe even saying, “Hey, I’ve got a story like that too.”

📺 BONUS: After reading the book, head to Kevin’s YouTube channel Planet Hipes and experience the stories told by Kevin himself—animated, real, and unforgettable.

Because life’s not about the destination—it’s about the journey. And Kevin Hipes has one hell of a story to tell.

About the Author

Kevin Hipes is a born storyteller, lifelong entrepreneur, and proud New Yorker with a personality as big as the adventures he's lived. Often called “the New York Forrest Gump,” Kevin’s life has taken him from the streets of Queens to the pulpit, to business boardrooms, and even to the deck of his very own oil tanker in the Caribbean. As Kevin often says “Forrest owned a shrimp boat, but I owned an Oil Tanker and my story is true!”

With no formal writing background, Kevin still managed to turn a lifetime of unbelievable experiences into a heartfelt, hilarious, and deeply human book—Book of Me. Rather than writing in the traditional sense, Kevin recorded over 100 personal episodes for his YouTube channel, Planet Hipes, then compiled them into a unique memoir filled with wit, wisdom, determination, and raw truth.

As an uneducated street kid from Queens, Kevin has lived many lives from factory worker to Hippie, to rockstar (almost), banker, preacher, restaurateur, politician and more. He shares not just the ups and downs of a seven-decade journey but speaks intimately about being a cancer survivor who also struggled through and dealt with a bipolar disorder, keeping the high energy manic side while overcoming the devastating depressions that plagued him through most of his life. You will find Kevin’s faith in God, unrelenting positive mindset and sense of humor make for a powerful story boldly told in his own words.

Kevin currently lives in Orlando, Florida, where he owns and runs HCB Real Estate, a retail commercial brokerage and development firm. Book of Me is his debut memoir and a testament to the power of authenticity, faith, and self-deprecating humor.

Follow Kevin’s stories on YouTube: Planet Hipes and experience the animated storyteller in action.

My Review:

Murder, Relics & Rivalries is the fourth installment and a fantastic addition to the A Hattie and Moose Cozy Mystery series by Greta Sinclair. As usual, I was quickly immersed in another enthralling mystery featuring Hattie, Gracie, Bo, and Hattie's charming fur babies, Moose, Mini Pearl, and Cecil.

When an 18th-century Baroque flute vanishes from Christ Church Cathedral just before Nashville’s Sacred Music Festival, Hattie is brought on board to uncover the flute's whereabouts. Her quest leaves her with numerous lingering questions and an extensive list of potential culprits.

The flute holds significant value, approximately $200,000, to be precise. This missing instrument was expected to be the highlight of the festival, and its absence could jeopardize the entire event, not to mention tarnish the church's reputation if it isn’t located soon.

Murder, Relics & Rivalries was a highly captivating and enchanting tale that kept me enthralled from start to finish with its myriad of twists and turns. Additionally, the mystery and suspense had me guessing and eagerly flipping pages throughout.

I wholeheartedly recommend this remarkable continuation of the Hattie and Moose Cozy Mystery series. Be sure to pick up a copy of Murder, Relics & Rivalries today!

Book Blitz + #Giveaway: Hooking Up With a Rockstar by Kitt Henley @XpressoTours

Hooking Up With a Rockstar
Kitt Henley
Publication date: October 28th 2025
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

An opposites-attract friends-to-lovers romance featuring a charming, swoon-worthy rockstar hero who falls first, a fiercely independent club-manager heroine, a hometown show, a secret song, and one very compromising position.

I told him it was just a hookup. I don’t think he bought it.

JUNE: Anthony’s always been a wild good time, but even before his band got famous, I knew better than to let myself bask in the glow of that 1,000-watt smile.

He makes me feel things I don’t ever want to feel. For anyone.

So when his band went on tour halfway across the world, forgetting him was the goal, but his postcards from the road didn’t make it any easier.

And now he’s back. Playing my club, looking every inch the rock god, and reminding me what it feels like to be with him.

Under him.

But I have a club to run, a boss breathing down my neck, and no room for distractions. This is my chance to prove myself, and unlike my mother, I’m not about to let some guy derail my life.

Three nights.
That’s all I have to survive without letting my guard down.
Without losing myself.
Without wanting him.

Soulmates: Two bands. Three shows. Four happily ever afters.
Hooking Up With a Rockstar is a complete romance novella with no cliffhanger. This story can be enjoyed as a standalone or read as the second book in the Soulmates interwoven rockstar romance series.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

“How are you doing on your part of the list so far?” I ask, situating myself on the barstool directly across from June.

“Doing good.” Her eyelashes flutter a little. She’s working hard to keep her attention on the bottles she’s probably pretending to count, but her eyes keep darting in my direction. “Everything’s ready to go for ticketing and admission, and the staff are all confirmed for tonight.”

“OK, fabulous. Sounds like the perfect time for the two of us to grab a bite to eat.”

“Oh. Thanks, but I’ll get something later.” She angles her body away even further.

She’s adorable.

June’s making me work for it, that’s for sure. She’s a tough nut to crack, so I wasn’t expecting her to toss her panties at me or anything, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping she’d be a little more receptive. But that’s OK. We’ve got three whole days together, and this time I’m playing the long game.

“My treat.” I slide over one stool and inch myself back into her line of sight. “How about a quick sandwich?”

“Oh, I don’t know…” She finally turns to face me, looking skeptical.

“Come on, Chicago,” I tease, lowering my voice. “What. Are you afraid I’m gonna put the moves on you?”

She rolls her eyes. “I freaking know you will.”

“No. This is a professional lunch outing.”

“Uh-huh. Sure it is.” She shakes her head, smiling. “Yeah, all right. But just a quick bite.”

“Absolutely.”

She reaches for her coat and we step outside. I swear it’s even colder than it was this morning, and it takes my eyes a minute to adjust to the bright sun after spending all day in the club.

“We could grab barbecue sandwiches at that place around the corner,” June says.

“Actually, I heard there’s this great place a couple of blocks down. Follow me.”

The truth is I know exactly where we’re headed. It’s the diner where June and I used to go sometimes after closing up the bar.

The first time she asked if I wanted to get a bite to eat after work, I thought she was asking me out on a real date. We were sitting at that diner, facing each other across the table, when she first started telling me about all the different bands she was into. Eclectic stuff. She could appreciate things in the music that most people never even notice. That was when I realized she was someone special.

As we make our way down the sidewalk, I can’t help but feel giddy. It’s good to be walking through the city side by side with June again.

We round the corner and I slow down as we approach the restaurant.

“Oh, I see what you did here,” she says. “A trip down memory lane, huh? I recall being promised a quick sandwich.”

“But if you’ll remember, June, the service here is incredibly speedy,” I reassure her with a wink, and she rolls her eyes.

We score our usual cozy table by the window and put our sandwich orders in right away to speed things up.

June leans toward me, resting both hands at the edge of the table and giving me a little scowl as the server pours us each a cup of coffee.

“I can’t believe you brought me back here,” she says, shaking her head. “You’re hilarious. You know that?”

“It’s one of the things you love most about me.” I grin.

“That’s debatable.” She’s giving me one of those feisty June expressions that I’ve missed so much.

“Well, you guys sure have been getting around this past year.”

“Oh, you’ve been paying attention?” I wink.

“I did receive thirty-eight postcards.” She gives me a sideways glare, and my heart does a flip-flop. She actually read my cards.

“Ahh, but who’s counting?” I tease.

“Right.” She nods slowly, but her cheeks flush pink.

I pause, taking a deep breath to steady myself. “You know, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking this past year.”

“Yeah? About what?” She takes a sip of her coffee.

“About us, actually,” I say softly.

That must’ve caught her off guard because those dark eyes lock right on mine, and her cheeks flush a deep shade of pink.

“Oh.”

“Sorry. Is that weird?”

“No, I mean, it’s fine,” she says, dropping her voice a little. “It’s just—I’m worried we got our wires crossed somewhere.”

“What do you mean?”

“Last year—when we hooked up—I didn’t mean for it to be anything more than one night.” She’s watching my eyes closely now.

“Yeah, I was wondering about that,” I say.

“I know. I really fucked that up. I should have been clear about what I was looking for from the start. That wasn’t fair to you.”

I shrug. “Nah, you’re OK. We didn’t make any promises that night.”

She gives me a little smile. “Well, thanks for saying that. But I shouldn’t have ghosted you. We’ve been friends a long time, and you deserve better.”

“OK. But I get it. It was intense, what happened between us.”

She stops mid-sip, almost choking on her coffee. “Err, umm—hmm? What do you mean?”

“The two of us. We’re something else together. I know you felt it too.”

“Oh, I don’t know…” Her pupils dilate and her lips part a bit, the way they do when she’s turned on.

“It wasn’t just a hookup, June.” I let my tone drop down low, just the way she likes it. “No matter what you want to tell yourself.”

“Um, no, I’m pretty sure that’s what it was,” she tries, but her voice is breathless, and her hands are trembling. “Just…a hookup.”

“If you say so, Chicago,” I tease, giving her a wide smile.

Author Bio:

Kitt Henley writes short, spicy contemporary romance with relatable characters, a touch of humor, and tons of heart. Never one to make it through a good romance (or cookie commercial) with dry eyes, Kitt's heartstrings are easy to pull on. When she played in rock bands and crunched numbers in the Seattle tech world, those waterworks weren't an asset, but after a friend suggested she try writing romance, everything clicked into place. From the moment she sat down to write her first novel, she knew she'd found her calling.

When she's not wrangling words in her tiny bedroom office, Kitt loves to spend time with her high school best friend (a.k.a. her rockstar husband) and their two ridiculously funny boys. She's still holding out hope for that family band someday, but in the meantime she'll happily settle for camping trips, board games, long walks with friends, and watching lots and lots of thrillers.
