More Amazon Freebies. But hey, I love Amazon Freebies.

Death Weeps (Death, #4) Title: Death Weeps (Death Series, Book 4)

Author: Tamara Rose Blodgett

I love reading about zombies and apocalyptic worlds. The only show that I watch on tv is The Walking Dead. so there fore I know that this series will be real good. I just need to find the time to read it.

Broken (Daughters of the Jaguar, #2) Title: Broken (Daughters of the Jaguar #2)

Author: Willow Rose

I did a blog tour and had the opportunity to read and review Savage (Daughters of the Jaguar #1). So when I saw the second book in the series Broken for free on Amazon I knew I had to have it too. I loved Savage it was a very great read. It was different than any books about shifters that I had ever read before.

Eliza's Shadow Title: Eliza's Shadow

Author: Catherine Wittmack

I was asked by the author Catherine Wittmack if I would like to read and review her book Eliza's Shadow. (Review coming soon) And after reading the summary I was hooked. I was very glad that I agreed to read Eliza's Shadow. It was a very great read. So when she emailed me and asked if I would help her spread the word about Eliza's Shadow being free for a couple of days on Amazon I was very glad to help her out. The free days was Nov. 14 and Nov. 15. I couldn't resist having an Amazon copy of her book as well. Thanks Catherine.

Nice Day to Die ( I Am Alive book 1 Episode #1 ) Title: Nice Day to Die (I Am Alive Book 1 Episode 1) (A Young Adult Dystopian) (I Am Alive serial)

Author: Cameron Jace

Nice Day to Die kind of reminds me of a book that Stephen King wrote called The Running man. Where they are fighting for their lives trying to stay alive on a tv show that is live or like one of those reality tv shows.

Apocalypsis: Book 1, Kahayatle Title: Apocalypsis: Book 1 (Kahayatle)

Author: Elle Casey

Apocalpysis sounds like a very intriguing read. Bryn Mathis lives all alone since his dad died a year ago and he is almost out of food. This book sounds very interesting to me because Bryn lives outside of Orlando, Florida and I have family that lives in Orlando. You are not going to believe this but their name is Mathis also. Although they do not live in Orlando now they did up untill a few years ago. Besides all of that I do love reading about apocalyptic books.

Received from author for review for a blog tour.

Dinosaur Lake (once titled Predator) Title: Dinosaur Lake

I read a review on Goodreads that compared Dinosaur Lake to Jurassic Park. I read the book Jurassic Park and I have also watched and own all three of the Jurassic Park movies. I loved them. So I just know that Dinosaur Lake will be a very, very good read.

Review: Dark Passage By M.L. Woolley

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS

DARK PASSAGE

Jen hides in a rundown mansion when her life falls apart, has vivid experiences with a beautiful male entity who longs to be her soulmate, and must choose reality of living or dead. Her childhood friend Ivy 19, from a rough past, can communicate with the dead, and other supernatural gifts emerge. Ivy will resist the evil that would separate the lovers.

“With one final glance behind her, Jen urged her horse forward, and toward the safety of the mountains. Her heart was heavy and she immediately thought of the other realm. Her hope was that they were aware of what had happened and would help. Chaos was already breaking out; and the world was in danger of slipping back to a time of great darkness, reminiscent of the Middle Ages."

MY REVIEW

DARK PASSAGE

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I received a copy of Dark Passage from the author for review.

Jen rents an old run down mansion to escape a husband that is very mean to her. She has been having dreams about a man and she has fallen in love with the man in her dreams. How do you fall in love with a man from your dreams? Well I am not real sure about this one but she has been having some very vivid dreams about her and this man together. There is a lot of strange supernatural things going on in this house that she has rented.

Jen's best friend Ivy has had a very hard life herself. She lost both a brother and a sister and has always felt like it was her fault that she was to blame. With feeling of this guilt Ivy has made a lot of bad choices in her life. But after visiting Jen in her new home and knowing that the dead still resides in Jen's home Ivy turns her life around. She is tired of being the person that she was she wants a better life for herself.

Bill the man in Jen's dreams and the very same man who she fell in love with in her dreams is the owner of the mansion that she rented. Not only did Jen fall in love Bill but he fell in love with her too. After Bill bought the house one day he was on a ladder. He was painting the outside of the house. He fell off the ladder because of some strange supernatural thingy happening. The fall put him in the hospital and in a coma. Bill can communicate with Jen and his best friend Peter while being in a coma.

Dark Passage was one of those stories that you don't want to put down. It was a very fast paced and gripping tale of the supernatural. I loved the different POV's, I loved that we got to see and know what each character was thinking and feeling throughout the story. Dark Passage was M.L. Woolley's first novel and I am very thankful to her for giving me the opportunity to read her novel. After finally getting around to reading it I was very upset that I hadn't read it sooner. M.L. Woolley is a new author that we all need to keep our eyes and ears open for more of her work.

A Bridge to Treachery

Former Colonel Lou Christopher is an ex-Army Ranger retired from the military and contentedly working as a New York investment broker. After being assigned a number of lucrative accounts and becoming accustomed to living the good life, he discovers there is a pay back. His former military skills are requested under a threat of losing everything he has.

Handed a group of misfits to assemble into a military strike team, he is coerced into leading the team on a mission of domestic terrorism. At the center of a bridge outside of Manhattan, his strike team is caught in the act and unexpectedly becomes engaged in a deadly firefight. It's then that he learns the mission was a political maneuver from the highest levels of the U.S. Government-and ultimately realizes he has been betrayed by his superiors. Learning his team was considered nothing more than collateral damage and intended to be killed and left as scapegoats, he uses his unique military expertise and engages in a fight for his life.

As the strike team is decimated, he and a female teammate elude the opposition forces to survive and escape, turning the tables on his superiors. Using his distinctive set of military skills, he now becomes the hunter and vows to extract his revenge and bring them all down.

EXCERPT

A Bridge to Treachery

Lou got to his knees and scrambled under the trailer toward Frawley’s body. He reached across him, for his carbine. Immediately, the police threw another fusillade of fire. Lou was caught in the middle of the searchlight beam. He scrambled back to safety behind the tire as bullets screeched around him, careening off the concrete in a shower of sparks, miraculously failing to ignite the gasoline. By the weight of it, he judged the magazine of the carbine to be almost full.

Back toward the center of the bridge, the police cars were creeping forward. Lou crouched behind the front tire of Mack West, gathering his strength for a sprint. He got to his feet and plunged out into the darkness adjacent to the bridge railing. He pumped his legs with all of his strength. He saw the dark form of his drenched jacket in the roadway ahead.

The headlights of the approaching squad cars created angular shafts of light through the wheels, undercarriage, and stanchions of Mack East and the three-quarter ton full of napalm drums. He dove for his jacket, grasping the machine beneath it in both hands. He whirled the handle once; nothing. Then again, harder. Again. On the third twist, the center of the bridge seemed to heave up in a ball of yellow and crimson flame. A thunderous roar enveloped the bridge and sent shocks through the girders and the concrete surface, throwing Lou to his back.

Globs of thickened aviation gasoline arched through the night--clearing the overhead cables—and then plunged to the inky river below. The massive ball of flame slowly rose off the surface of the roadway and engulfed the cables and lights above.

Lou got to his feet and turned back toward the western end of the bridge, racing back toward Mack West. For nearly a full minute, the center of the bridge was aglow with intense seething light; yet no one fired at him. He went right to the truck, hugging the side of the roadway and the railing. The air in his lungs seemed to swell in his chest until he couldn’t catch his breath. And still no one fired.

Back in the shelter of Mack West, Lou sank to his knees behind the front tire. The entire bridge and the mountains on either side of the Hudson were lit by flaming napalm that now stuck to the overhead cables and slowly dripped in globs of orange flame to the roadway. He’d stopped them.

He became aware of the pulsing, rug-beating throb of helicopter blades. He looked out to the north of the bridge and saw a military HU-1B hovering at the level of the roadway, its landing lights gleaming. Red lights flashed on the tail boom. He was receiving no fire. The cops must have been holding off to keep from accidently hitting the chopper or firing into their comrades closing in from the east side.

Slowly the craft moved forward, dipping its nose and gaining altitude. It ascended above the bridge, swinging back to the eastern side. Thirty seconds later, Lou heard throbbing directly overhead. The chopper hovered out in front of him, by the traffic circle, and descended to the ground. There was no firing. It was the perfect time to go.

He reached the end of the railing. Instinctively, he veered to the right, across the narrow strip of grass. He dove headlong into the underbrush, still holding the carbine. He crawled on all fours over roots and rocks and under bushes and low hanging branches that grabbed at his weapon and held him back. He reached the cut.

It was steeper than he thought. He started down the embankment on his rump, warding off boulders and stumps on his way down with his feet, but soon he began tumbling and sliding in a cascade of rocks and water. The pool at the bottom was not deep and it was no colder than the rain.

At first, it was absolutely black in the cut. Gradually his eyes adjusted, but there was no moon and no reflective surfaces to magnify what little light existed. He was shielded from the open ground a hundred and forty feet above him at the level of the bridge. He heard no sound except the splashing of water at his feet and his own deep breathing. The rain still came down steadily, unrelenting. For that he was thankful. It would mask all of his movements.

There wasn’t much time. He didn’t know if they’d seen him dart off under the cover and confusion of the helicopter landing. The only thing to do was to strike out west, shielded from view until he was far from this place.

“Hello...” he heard from the other side of the stream. It was a half whisper. “Is it you?”

“Come over here,” he said softly. “Over here. I’m holding out my hand.”

He heard her stumble into the water and stifle a screech. Then his hand was holding hers; pulling her across. She rushed to him, clutched at his shirt, and wrapped her arms around him.

“You don’t look dead,” she said.

GUEST POST

THE GEOGRAPHY OF A NOVEL and WHERE IT COMES FROM

The setting of my thriller A Bridge to Treachery is deeply rooted in the geography of the Hudson River Valley stretching from Newburg, New York, a town on the Hudson River north of West Point all the way south to Manhattan. I chose to use actual locations within this area for most of the scenes rather than to invent them because this adds to the feeling I'm trying to induce in the reader that this story could actually have happened where the fictional scenes unfold.

Geography drives most of the action in the novel. Once the characters are placed in a scene and need to move to another location, the actual terrain, roads, etc. determine exactly how this is accomplished. You could look it all up on a topographic map.

I didn't need to research the geography of the region. I lived in it for nearly thirty years, starting when at age nineteen I departed my home in the suburbs of Chicago in the midwest and traveled by train east to attend the US Military Academy at West Point, 40 miles north of New York City. It was the first exposure I had to terrain that was not absolutely flat.

West Point is situated at a bend in the beautiful Hudson River that flows through the heavily forested and rugged foothills that rise on either side. Within a day of arriving at West Point a pretty scruffy teen-ager, I was formed up in immaculate dress gray trousers and pressed white shirt for the swearing in ceremony in front of Trophy Point, from which you can look out to the north at the river stretching out between towering hills, a perfect vista for the artists of the Hudson River School. It is here where my protagonist Lou Christopher reflects on his days as a cadet, and makes a decision that dictates the climax of the novel..

As a cadet at West Point, I became very familiar with the rocky local terrain during a summer of intense military training at the beginning of my sophomore year. As a junior in Engineering Class, I would travel to the Bear Mountain Bridge to check out how the massive cables were anchored in the surrounding rock. Later, I would stand on a smaller bridge and peer down into the chasm in which Popolopen Creek flows. Here in the novel, Maggie Christopher galvanized herself for action.

When my military service was over, I settled with my family in Bergen County, NJ from which I commuted to Wall Street. Daily, I walked the streets from the World Trade Towers and through Trinity Churchyard, and in the summer, ate brown bag lunches on the benches of Bowling Green. I rode the subway to Grand Central Station in midtown. These are the places where, in the novel, Lou finds temporary refuge.

An activity that absorbed a lot of my family's time in my thirties is the sport of Orienteering. I was fascinated with navigation by map and compass, and the joy of traipsing the hills that surrounded us. I organized a club, put on tons of "meets", and eventually administered much larger meets. Putting on meets requires producing orienteering maps from scratch. I spent hundreds of hours in the field, plotting every boulder, stream, cliff and trail on detailed maps. This is how I know what it's like to traverse the terrain around Bear Mountain, an important part of A Bridge to Treachery.

A Kiss for Emily

YA suspense driven paranormal romance

Emily Stokes never thought that falling in love would put her smack dab in the middle of chaos, or have her questioning her sanity! But when strange occurrences turn unbelievable, it becomes a race to save Emily from none other than the good-guys.

FROM THE AUTHOR

A Kiss for Emily

The first book in The Emily Stokes Series is entitled A Kiss for Emily. It's about a 17-year-old gal who lives in the heart of Kansas who's life is about to come unglued. It's YA, totally suspense-driven, and takes paranormal to a new level! If I tell you any more about the book, I'll have to include a spoiler alert because I can honestly say the less you know going into the story, the more you'll enjoy it! With that being said, here is the most I dare say:

Emily Stokes never thought that falling in love would put her in the middle of chaos, or have her questioning her own sanity! But when strange occurrences turn unbelievable, it becomes a race against time to save Emily from none other...than the good-guys.

MY REVIEW

A Kiss for Emily

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a copy of A Kiss for Emily from the author for a review via Full Moon Bites Book Tours.

When I read the title A Kiss for Emily I was thinking a kiss for Emily? What does this mean exactly? Does it mean her first kiss, her first real kiss or just a very special kiss? I just had to find out what was so special about A Kiss for Emily was all about. Well I not going to tell you which one it is because then I would be giving it all away. I don't want to spoil it for anyone. But I will say this if you read the book to find out for yourself you will not be disappointed. A Kiss for Emily will have you wanting to turn the pages as quickly as possible in order to find out if Emily is going to get her kiss or not.

Emily is just like all of the other girls her age she wants this one certain guy Alex to ask her to the prom. All of her friends tells her to ask him if he doesn't ask her. But Emily doesn't want it this way. I mean all the other girls have boyfriends that have asked them and Emily wants the guy to ask her not the other way around. That is just the way things usually work. The guys ask the girls. Yes, times have changed but Emily is a like an old fashion kind of girl. She has her own beliefs and should be respected for them.

Emily's dad buys a new house and Emily thinks her dad has destroyed her life. She is very upset with her dad about the new house. Sure her friends will tell her that they will stay in touch but most of the time people just move on with their lives. They find new friend and hang out with them and your old friends just become part of your past. Besides all of that Emily is in love with Alex. She thinks if she moves away she will lose him.

Emily is a city girl not a country girl and their new house is in the country. Emily thinks there is nothing to do in the country. But she is a city girl and it is all she knows. She doesn't know anything about the country so therefore she is going to hate it. And hate it she definitely does until she goes for a walk in the forest and meets Sam. A very good looking guy. Sam is a farmer and has a very nice body. A well formed body with the physique of a cowboy. Will Emily get the kiss that she has been wanting from Sam? Or will she get her kiss from Alex? I am not going to tell you. You will just have to read A Kiss for Emily to find out.

My Vampire Cover Model

Life changed for Deanna Brooks the night she attended a book signing for her aunt's best-selling paranormal romance series. There she met Burney 'The Cover God' Sheridan. The model for the series' fictional vampire hero, Burn is beyond handsome and has an overabundance of Irish charm. He's too good to be true.

Burn Sheridan, a man with scores of past lives, has a secret: he is a vampire. Meeting Deanna is agony because for the first time in over two hundred years, Burn experiences the rarest of vampiric needs-the mate-of-the-soul connection. Keeping people at a distance has been Burn's existence for centuries, but Deanna makes his pledge of staying detached impossible.

Many obstacles lie ahead and the biggest of all may be Burn himself. Can Deanna and Burn overcome them and find lasting love?

EXCERPT

My Vampire Cover Model

Deanna tapped her sandaled foot in annoyance. She didn't want to bother with the guy, but Janice insisted, bouncing on the balls of her feet in excitement as they advanced toward the table.

As they moved closer, the model's masculinity became more potent. She could hear the slight lilt to his deep voice as he answered the ladies questions. His eyes crinkled sexily when he smiled. His teeth were perfectly shaped and a brilliant white.

Deanna glanced at her aunt's table a few times, hoping to catch her eye, but Carol was busy working her crowd. While Deanna enjoyed an historical romance she'd never quite taken to the paranormal genre. Aunt Carol always mailed her advance copies, but she usually wound up giving them to Janice. She should've given the books a chance. Judging from the crowd, paranormal romance seemed popular. There was a steady stream of women coming and going.

Janice clutched her arm. "We're next!"

Oh, yippie-friggin'-yay. Janice stood next to Burn. Damn, he is tall. A few inches under six-six, anyway, Deanna observed. Janice babbled nonsensical chatter while the model smiled, nodded, and signed a couple of her paperbacks.

Janice put her arm around the man's trim waist. "Take our picture, Dean!"

Deanna raised the camera and looked up just as Burn's searing gaze swept over her like a roll of white heat. God, his eyes had turned from black to silver again. Those special magic contacts were amazing. Holding out the camera, she clicked and hoped Janice was in the frame because she couldn't tear her eyes away from "Sizzle" or "Burn" or whatever his name was. Deanna clicked another for good measure.

Janice took the camera and shoved her toward the leather-clad hunk. Her mouth went dry, and her insides fluttered. For God's sake, he was only a model. Why was she so flustered?

She stepped next to him and glanced up. Oh hell yeah, very tall. He towered over her by at least a foot. His arm stretched out to clasp her shoulder, and he brought her in tight against his side. Solid, rock-hard muscle. Her insides began to churn in arousal.

"What's your name, darlin'?"

She couldn't speak. Deanna was like Ralphie in A Christmas Story, sitting on Santa's lap. Duh…uh. No words came out.

"Her name is Deanna, but I call her Dean!" Janice sang out.

Burn gently squeezed her shoulder, and it almost brought her to her knees, his touch was so intoxicating.

"Dean. I like that," he purred.

Dear God. His voice, was he Irish? The tone sounded low, sexy, and rumbled deep in his impressive chest, sending shock waves through her entire body.

Then the unthinkable happened. A wash of scent covered her. Deanna could taste it in her mouth, and feel it on her skin. Was the overpowering aroma his cologne? Some guys liked to drown themselves with those tacky body sprays. Burn must have marinated himself in the swill.

Deanna wheezed and her throat closed up. Her hand clasped her throat. Trying to breathe through her nose was unsuccessful. The only thing she smelled was his spicy, musky, overpowering scent. Her eyes watered and her body trembled furiously.

"Are you all right, love?"

Deanna fell to her knees, fighting for every breath. Strong arms encircled her and carried her from the sales floor through to a door marked Staff Only.

Goodreads Synopsis

There's a nasty flu going round. An epidemic, they call it. The posters say to cover your mouth when you sneeze, and throw away the tissue.

But such simple measures won't help.

Because when you catch this flu, armed police come and lock you in your house to die alone.

When you catch this flu, it kills you in days.

And two hours after it's killed you, your eyelids snap open again...

FLU is a pacey, terrifying, frighteningly real zombie horror story.

'FLU is a belligerent little number. An easy to read, action packed blast of zombie shenanigans, that I thoroughly enjoyed' (Jason Baki, Kamvision)

'A traditional tale of the dead rising. A richly developed story with characters that you can love or hate based on the depth with which they are developed. Wayne Simmons does not disappoint' (Patrick D'Orazio's Tomes of Darkness)

Why did I choose Flu for this weeks Wishlist Wednesday?

Wow! Flu sounds like a very intriguing novel. When you get the "Flu" armed police come and lock you in your house to die alone. And then after you die you turn into a zombie, the undead. I love horror and especially the undead at the moment. Can't wait to get my hands on a copy of this one.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Lethal Beauty

As a covert operative in Elatia's elite military, Sway Waybourne is used to fending for herself. But a powerful uprising means she's now responsible for guarding the leader of a neighboring planet. Within seconds of meeting Dason Cavaletti, sparks fly and Sway realizes she's gotten more than she bargained for.

Dason is curious about the arousal taking over his mind, body, and soul. When he can no longer stand the overwhelming desire, he confronts Sway. But the disturbing news she delivers isn't at all what he expected. Mating with the gorgeous woman could kill him….

WARNING: Sarcasm galore from a fiery heroine who can take care of herself thank-you-very-much. She won't take anyone's guff-even from the leader of the free universe no matter how handsome he is. A unique genetic quirk leads to inventive foreplay, one blazing hot hands-on session in the bathtub and a gender bending encounter that signals this ain't your father's Star Trek. No redshirts were harmed while writing this novel.

EXCERPT

Lethal Beauty

"This is…quite the situation."

She blew out a breath as she slumped onto the far side of the mattress. "You can say that again."

Sensing her frustration-which matched his own-he reached over and clamped his hand around her ankle. She didn't fight as he dragged her across the bed and into his arms. "It's not as if it's the end of the world."

"No. It's just…I'm used to being able to handle any situation."

"And you don't know how to handle this."

"Not really."

"I'm sure we can come up with ideas. In fact, I'm thinking of one right now."

"You're going to be the death of me."

"Way I understand, it's the other way around." Her laughter rang out in the room, shattering the tension. He pulled her closer, content and sated for the moment. "You're a remarkable woman. Strong, determined, not to mention sexy as sin."

She squirmed against him and he took it as a signal she wasn't used to hearing such things said about her. Her reaction made him decide to shower her with attention while they were trapped together.

He was both amused and terrified by her reactions. Her extraordinary skill set was evident and he found her tenacity admirable. She possessed a vulnerability, though she clearly did her best to hide that aspect of her personality. By his guess, she thought it would show a weakness if she let others know about any flaw in her perfection. A good covert operative couldn't have any visible flaws. Otherwise, they weren't very good at their job.

By the looks of things so far, she was very, very good at her job.

And for reasons he didn't completely understand, he had begun to fall in love with her.

Top Ten Books I'd Want On A Deserted Island

Witchblood

Title: Witchblood

Witchblood was very different than any book about vampires that I had ever read. Each new vampire had to do whatever they were told to do by the one that turned them.

Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)

Title: Shatter Me

Author: Tahereh Mafi

I loved Shatter Me it was a great book with a lot of twist and turns that keeps you turning pages and wanting to know more. A page turner that will keep you up half the night.

Title: Fire Baptized

Author: Kenya Wright

The Sword and The Prophet (#1)

Title:The Sword and The Prophet

Author: Missy LaRae

The Sword and The Prophet is one of those books that is going to stick with me for years to come. One that I can't seem to get out of my head. You know its like when you get a song in your head and keep hearing it over and over and over. That is how this book has been for me. Instead of a song stuck in my head there's a book stuck in my head.

Intangible

Title:Intangible

Author: J. Meyers

Intangible was a fast, enjoyable read a real page turner. I loved all the characters. I also loved that the mix of fairies and vampires as well as gifted humans.

The Witching Pen (The Witching Pen Novellas, #1)

Title:The Witching Pen

Author: Dianna Hardy

The Witching Pen wasn't exactly as good as I thought it would be. It was a hell of a lot more than I ever imaged it to be. Dianna threw in just enough to keep you hanging on and wanting more.

Of Poseidon (Of Poseidon, #1)

Title:Of Poseidon

Author: Anna Banks

When I read the ending I was like "no, no, no you can't do this". I was very shocked at how it ended but I did love it. I mean its like your sitting on the edge of your seat and you can't put it down because you just got to know what is coming next. What is Anna Banks going to slam us in the face with next? And then when you least expect it bam "the end". I thought about that ending for days and days. Who am I kidding I am stilling thinking about it. I guess I will for along time to come.

Dead World

Title:Dead World

Author: Shaun Jeffrey

I loved the whole concept, idea that is being portrayed in Dead World. It is not just about zombies or Gods in general. I love the aspect of telling a story with in a story. Shaun Jeffrey has an amazing, awesome way of telling a story. He is a brilliant story teller. To understand what he is trying to say you would have to have an open mind. The whole time I was reading Dead World I kept thinking that Shaun Jeffrey has a way of telling stories that makes me think of Stephen King.

Wanted Nightmares

After their love re-ignites, they fall into the Trickster God's trap.

EXCERPT

Chasing the Trickster

She stared at the photo on the gallery wall and silently swore. All semester ghostly images had marred her work. And now not only a strange inclusion ruined her photo, but the pin light needed to be repositioned as well. She found a ladder in the hallway supply closet. Balancing precariously on the top step, she noticed that the imperfection had changed into the image of a vehicle, and it was on fire. She could see the superheated air wavering up off of the flames. The crackling and sudden heat of a blaze forced her to lift a hand to guard her face. It was going to explode. She was quite sure of it. And then she was falling backwards, falling down…

INTERVIEW

April Grey

The Avid Reader: What inspired you to write Chasing the Trickster?

April Grey: I was going through a painful time in my life. My husband had had a heart attack, and I'd had to remove my son from public school because of his health issues. Part of me just really wanted to run away from my life. That was the part that took up living in the world of Chasing the Trickster.

The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

April Grey: In first grade I wrote a story which to my embarrassment was mimeographed to be sent home to my parents as part of a booklet of class writings. I tore it up because I didn't want my parents to know what a liar I was.

Although I loved books, I chose theatre as my first career.

One day over twenty-three years ago when I was in a library, I imagined my name on the spine of a book. My imagination was telling me that this was a new path I should take. I took classes and sold my first short story. Then I joined the Ph.D. program in theatre, got married and had a kid. It was a 12 year detour, but I eventually got back to writing.

So, when did I know I wanted to be a writer? I've always kept journals, so I've always been a writer, but writing for myself. Perhaps the question is when did I want to be a published writer? Maybe it was fifty years ago, when I smelt the chemicals coming off of that booklet in first grade, but was afraid of being revealed to my parents and the world as someone who made stuff up.

The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

April Grey: It was also first grade. I had some mild dyslexia and had to train myself to force the words to stay on the page. But once I deciphered the code, there was no stopping me. The library was my favorite place to be.

The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

April Grey: Speculative Fiction: Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction, Steampunk, Gothic, Thrillers, Mysteries. (It's easier to ask what I won't read).

The Avid Reader:What is your favorite book?

April Grey: At the moment, The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters by Gordon Dahlquist. Next week it might be a different one. I'm fickle.

The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

April Grey: That's a tough question. Charles DeLint was a great inspiration to me, but could I say he's my favorite? For a certain period of my life he was. But if you had asked me when I was a teen I'd say either Philip K. Dick or Michael Moorcock. Depending on the genre and my age, I've had many favorite authors.

The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

April Grey: I'd like to travel through Europe when it was inhabited by the Celts. They had (as far as we can tell) little to no written language and so all our accounts of them are from the Romans and Greeks. There is also the folklore of various areas such as Ireland and Scotland to tell us a little of these people and their history.

The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

April Grey: Writing is very easy for me. I love writing. I put on my clown hat and I laugh and cry as I make stuff up.

Revisions are a whole other thing. I have to face up to maybe having had a bit too much of a good time and settle down to make some sense of what I've written. Sometimes I find myself overwhelmed with rough and first drafts and then I just have to grit my teeth and keep revising.

The Avid Reader:Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

April Grey: I've had many, many cats in my life and only the past eleven years have we had dogs. Right now we have Salem, an eleven year old black cat with one golden eye and one brown eye. Stella, our dear black and white longhaired Chihuahua, passed away last February. In April, we adopted Arwen (she looks like Liv Tyler from Lord of the Rings). She has short gray hair and is a deer type chi. The cat is 12 pounds and the dog is only 5 lbs. They spend all day romping and playing with each other.

The Avid Reader:What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

April Grey: Greek Salad. It's the perfect blend of salty/fatty with the olives and feta, and healthy with the veggies. There are a lot of foods that I've had to remove from my diet because I have celiac disease: foods with gluten would literally kill me. So I "live" for my salad. (Sweets are my downfall. I try not to think of them...)

The Avid Reader:Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

April Grey: Learn your craft: grammar, structure, characters, description. Don't be afraid to take classes, and know this: you will fail. Over and over again, and that's how you get to be good at writing. Give yourself permission to fail. Wear a silly hat and a clown nose. Lighten up and have fun.

Writing for e-zines 13 SPOTS LEFT

April Grey. The best piece of advice I ever had as a budding novelist was to also write short pieces. The benefits of publishing short stories and/or non-fiction articles with e-zines (and other publications) are huge. You can make a name for yourself as a writer, create a platform, improve your craft and get paid by selling to e-zines. This course will teach the beginning writer how to research markets, evaluate their own work, write a cover letter/follow up query and track their stories.
