Excerpt:
My chest began to throb without warning, then tighten. Had it been this painful last time? Ten months had passed since I’d last played. I smiled despite the pain. I couldn’t wait to sneak up on Bero. Hug Juliana. The pressure on my body increased. She’d be mad, of course, but then she’d kiss me. Maybe we could sneak into the barn tonight.
The weight on my lungs grew. Breathing stopped. My vision filled with the red haze of oxygen deprivation. I tried to gulp, but my ribs were glued to my sides. I was stuck...and terrified. The fog turned gray...then black. Like last time, I managed to stand, but my legs and feet stood rooted like the giant oaks in Hanstein’s forest.
My heart pounded in my neck, the only sign I was still alive. The fog deepened. Why was this taking so long? Still the pressure held as if I’d been thrown under a boulder. I was dying.
I’d made a huge mistake.
It’s easy to forget fear. Stuff happens and you get distracted. After a while all you remember are the good things. Now that I was unable to move, unable to do anything, I remembered the way I’d felt the first time I landed in the game. I’d felt terror.
And terror was back now in full force, squeezing my middle and poking at my heart. As the pressure lifted and the fog cleared, the sense of impending doom gripped me with such force that I fell forward. I’d made a horrible mistake.
Stumbling, I stubbed my toes and suppressing a shout. In the near darkness, a rock or cliff rose wide as a house and three stories high. I only saw its outline, a black edge against the starry sky above.
The whistling I’d heard earlier definitely came from between the giant rocks. The air was filled with the scent of grasses, grit and something like sage. Had I returned in the summer?
Behind me the area appeared more open. Maybe I was down near the river and Luanda’s house. Should I move in the dark or wait? I’d get lost, wandering off in the wrong direction.A cold wind dug under my shirt and nipped at my skin. I tugged my sweater closer around me when I saw something glowing on the ground like a huge red eye.
“Not a move, Boy,” the voice hissed. “Or I’ll blow a hole through your gut.”

Reviews/Endorsements

“What a fun summer read! The Kid is an artful combination of science fiction and historical fiction that come together in a fantasy that is believable enough that the suspension of disbelief is possible and make the reading truly enjoyable. The contrast between Max’s present-day gamer lifestyle and the historical setting that he finds himself in offer a glimpse of the past and make history relevant for young people who may find historical connections difficult to make. What a wonderful way to bring history to life, re-imagine the past, and imagine the future all at the same time!”Patrice W. Hallock, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education, Chair, Educator Preparation & Psych-Child Life, Utica College

“Escape from the Past: The Kid is a magical fictional mystery interwoven with historical facts and exciting adventures. The reader experiences the twists and turns of the story while gaining a greater appreciation of the challenges of life in the Wild West during the late 1800’s. Max, a typical teenager of today, is thrown into a series of arduous challenges he must overcome in order to return to his former humdrum life. Along the way, he and we gain valuable insights and appreciation of the hardships encountered by the new western settlers and the Native American people amongst outlaws and the formidable desert climate of the New Mexico area. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience you will not want to miss.“  —Richard Rafes, Ph.D., J.D., President of East Central University

“As an English teacher of 43 years and as a life-long student of the Wild West and Native Americans, I found Annette Oppenlander’s, The Kid, to be an accurate, well-researched and thoroughly entertaining novel for young readers. The portrait of Max, the adventurous and risk-taking protagonist, is spot on;he has the language of young men his age and all the angst, dreams and longings that are hallmarks of a typical 17 year-old adolescent male. Ms. Oppenlander has a keen eye for detail, and her ability to create cliffhanging situations of high suspense makes for a great read. I strongly recommend this novel for any imaginative young reader who likes to have one foot in fantasy and one in reality.”Bill Hays, English AP/Honors Teacher, Retired, Bloomington North High School

I accept the handshake. But a split second into it, as our gazes lock, his grip softens around mine. A slow warmth seeps down my arm and melts into my chest. My lungs seize, and Domenic’s throat works briefly as if he can’t quite swallow.

This is not what I signed on for.

Panic sets in. I slide my hand from his and cup it around the bowl of my glass. The wine burns a little as I take too big a gulp, but I manage not to cough. Domenic, too, has retreated into his glass, but whatever just passed in that handshake hangs over us.

“So,” I say in a voice too close to a whisper, sending a sidelong glance his way, “do you always wander around hotels at night with two glasses and a bottle of wine?”

“Only when there’s a chance I might run into a pretty girl.”

I snort into my glass, relieved that the spell seems to be broken.

Domenic’s grin returns. “Why is that funny?”

“The last person to call me a pretty girl was my great-uncle, and I think I was ten years old at the time.”

He chuckles. “Beautiful woman, then.”

The unexpected compliment sets off a flurry of butterflies deep in my stomach. Suddenly breathless, I drain my glass and set it down, then reach for my laptop and close the screen. “Now you’re just making fun of me.”

“I didn’t mean to.”

Chair legs scrape as we both push away from the table, me ready to bolt, him rising to placate me before I can. We stand facing each other, nearly as close as we were in the studio this afternoon. Taking a deep breath, I stare at his chest for a minute. Once my wild heartbeat and those damn butterflies settle, I tip my head back to meet his gaze.

“What are you doing on Sunday?” he asks before I can speak.

I stutter for a minute, unable to look away from his eyes. “Sightseeing, probably. We have the whole day off.”

“Maybe I’ll join you.”

My throat feels tight again. Nodding, I skirt around him, choking out something that sounds like, “Good night.”

His fingers touch my arm as I pass. “Good night, Kate.”

Head spinning, I clutch my laptop against my chest and rush to the terrace doors. I look back when I reach the doorway, only to find him watching me, his thumbs hooked in his pockets and a half-smirk on his face.

A face I find too handsome for my own good.

Still, I wave at him, wiggling my fingers like a silly teenager who sees her crush across the cafeteria. My face burns as I whirl, practically sprinting across the dark breakfast room to the hallway and stairwell.

Excerpt from In Her Eyes by Wesley Banks:

Ben was tired, but he was excited when he woke up on Monday morning. It was Casey’s day off and Coach had given the team the week off, minus a team meeting this afternoon, since they had another month until the NCAA Championships.

Emma’s school started at seven forty-five which meant if he got to Casey’s around eight, they could spend the whole day just relaxing.

When he arrived the garage was shut, so he walked up to the front door. Before he could knock, though, the door swung open and Casey jumped on him, wrapping her arms around his neck and her legs around his waist.

“My hero,” she said in a terrible southern accent. Then she started giving him little pecks all over his head and face.

He walked inside with her still wrapped around him and kicked the door shut. Laughing, he said, “Who is this strange girl, and what did you do with Casey?”

She continued on in the southern accent. “You won the race for your beloved and claimed victory.”

Ben sat her on the backside of the couch and looked down at her. “What on earth has gotten into you?”

“You, Sir Runner. Now, take me, take me now.” Casey puckered up her lips playfully and Ben laughed.

Ben leaned in to give her a quick kiss, thinking she might taste or smell like alcohol, because right now that was the only explanation he could come up with. She tasted like…cookies.

He looked around the room and to his right, sitting on the kitchen counter, he found his answer. He let go of Casey and she fell backwards onto the couch.

“Hey!” she said as she hit the couch cushion.

Ben walked over to the kitchen and picked up a small tub of Cookies ’n Cream ice cream and a bag of Fudge Filled Chewy Chips Ahoy. He held up both and looked over at Casey who was half-hiding, half-peering over the top of the couch. “Please tell me you are not eating cookies and ice cream at eight o’clock in the morning.”

Casey jumped over the couch and came running at Ben, a ball of sugar filled energy. She wrapped her arms around his waist, her legs around the back of his calves, and inched her way up his body. When she reached the top she bombarded his neck with kisses. “My hero,” she said. She stopped for a moment and looked at him with the most devious, sensual grin. She leaned in closer until there was almost no space between her lips and his. Then like a cheetah springing on a gazelle, she grabbed the ice cream with her left hand and the cookies with her right, hit the ground and took cover on the couch.

“You have serious problems,” Ben said.

Casey pulled out a cookie and dipped it in the ice cream and held it up for him to see. Then she started humming and dancing the cookie around like she was taunting him.

Ben took two steps, dove across the couch, snatched the cookie from her hand and shoved it in his mouth before she could barely move. She looked at him wide eyed and in complete silence and then jumped on him. They wrestled and tickled each other like five-year-olds, stopping every now and then for a quick cookie break.

This went on for about thirty more minutes and then she crashed on the floor next to him. Her head lay across his chest as he played with her hair until eventually he crashed too.

Review: This Would Be Paradise: Book 2 by N. D. Iverson

This Would Be Paradise: Book 2
by N. D. Iverson
Published April 2nd 2016
Genre: Dystopian, Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic, Fantasy

Blurb:

Community connotes safety and togetherness—or does it?

Bailey and Chloe head back on the road, where they come across strange markings belonging to a group intent on bloodshed and abduction. With this heinous enemy lurking in the shadows, they seek help in new and old friends along the way.

When they arrive at Hargrove, nothing is what it seems inside the makeshift, post-apocalyptic community. People are turning up dead, and for once, zombies aren’t the ones to blame. Fingers are pointed, everyone is a suspect, and no one is safe outside or inside these walls.

Goodreads ~ Amazon

My Review:

We are back again following Bailey and Chloe as they travel along trying to find Chloe’s big brother Ethan and Bailey’s best friend zoe and the rest of their little group. On their little trip to finding everyone Bailey gets in a lot of practice with her shooting actually more than she would like killing zombies and well people that are still alive as well.

With Bailey and Chloe being all alone and female at that; everyone thinks they are weak and some men think that Bailey is theirs for the taking. But Bailey will not go down without a fight. She has to do somethings that she is not comfortable doing but is her only choice at the time. But after it is all over she is having a hard time keeping it together but she must for Chloe and her own sake. If they want to survive that is beside she is Chloe’s only safe heaven at the moment.

While they are trying to find their friends they do meet up with more people and each and every time they are not sure if they can trust them or not. It has finally come down to who is good or bad. But they do meet some good people that help them out and give them a place to stay for a few days but things don’t turn out exactly as planned.

Needless to say Chloe and Bailey are on the road again with a couple of new friends, a man, Roy and his daughter Amanda. Well with nowhere to go or any plans Roy figures that going with Bailey and Chloe is as good a plan as any at the moment. So they are back on the road again looking for their friends and fighting zombies.

I love Bailey’s sense of humor and her snarky come backs at the oddest times. I also love how she will just bust out laughing right in the middle of fighting zombies. She will keep you on your toes laughing the whole way. I love all the characters (well almost all) in This Would Be Paradise Book 2. Chloe is a very smart girl for a nine and a half year old. Her and Bailey make a good team.

This Would Be Paradise Book 2 is a very fast paced read with just about the right amount of zombie fighting and killing. I would love to see This Would Be Paradise on the big screen! I can’t wait for book 3 to find out more about Bailey, Chloe, Ethan, John, Zoe and all of the other characters and what they run into to next.

This Would Be Paradise: Book 1

About the Author:

N. D. Iverson is a young author trying to find her niche in the world. She has a business degree; to which she is still trying to find a practical application for. She has bounced from half-baked ideas of becoming a forensic pathologist (cut short when the option for attending an autopsy came up and she rather quickly decided maybe that wasn't for her), a member of a rock band (sadly, neither she nor her friends could play instruments or sing, not that it's a requirement these days...) and many more.

This Would Be Paradise is her first completed book, which has started a chain reaction of one-too-many book ideas dancing around in her head. She plans on wrangling in these ideas and making full fledged books from them. So keep an eye out on the horizon for more works to come! EXCERPT:

ADAM:

Best to get it over with now. I type: I had the thought today.

I click send.

For a few seconds, I watch the screen, waiting for her to reply. I can’t expect Dr. Shaw to be right there to answer me. She’s probably in session with someone.

A group of students pass by, chattering and laughing, light at bubbles. They halt at the curb to wait for the light to change. They’re all wearing NYU sweatshirts and carrying messenger bags or laptops with silkscreen logos about “being green” and “tolerant of diversity.” Adventurers embarking on the quest known as Life. What it must be like to have a whole lifetime to look forward to, no dead end staring back at you.

My mobile buzzes.

It’s Dr. Shaw. Tell me the exact thought and context.

I had a flutter. After, I saw Mum and Dad. Their backs were turned to me and I thought: They’d be happier without me. They’ll be fine after I’m dead. I click send and try to ignore the gnawing pit in my stomach. My message seems dramatic now that I’ve sent it off for her to scrutinize. It was better left unsaid.

A bubble with three dots surfaces at the bottom of my screen. She’s typing right now. I suck in a dry, exhaust laden breath.

She replies: What evidence do you have that they’ll be happy?

That was simple. They were laughing.

Your death will be devastating to them.

My heart twinges a bit. Will be? Does she somehow know I won’t make it until I find a donor? Maybe the surgeon told her I’m not a candidate. I blink and re-read her statement. No, I’m over-reacting. She’s just countering my argument with logic. It’s her style to challenge me with the opposite idea so I’ll find the reality somewhere between. Still, I’m not ready to admit she’s right. Mum and Dad don’t need me dragging them down. I text, Yes, but they’ll be alright.

Of course they will. Life goes on.

Dr. Shaw is unrelenting in her approach. So different from Mum who tries to comfort me with delusional happy thoughts.

Right. And I’m such a burden on them now.

Whatever you think they’re sacrificing is nothing compared to how much you mean to them.

I’m tired of waiting for my heart to stop.

Do you want it to stop? You won’t suffer anymore.

Virtual Book Tour + #Giveaway: Wealth & Privilege and Brains & Beauty by Jeanette Watts @JeanetteAWatts @RABTBookTours

Wealth & Privilege and
Brains & Beauty
by Jeanette Watts
Historic Fiction
2013 / 2015

Book One (Wealth & Privilege)

Blurb:

Boy meets girl, falls in love at first sight. Oops, she's already married. Bad planning. She becomes a friend and a muse, helps him find his voice. He knows that no one gets to capture their own muse, but he can dream, can't he...?

Excerpt:

A soft rumble of thunder sounded in the distance, and they both groaned.

“Just what we need,” Thomas observed.  “More water.”

“Well, I suppose thunder doesn’t necessarily mean more rain,” Regina answered hopefully.

It was an odd sort of thunder.  It took Thomas a moment to realize why.  Then it occurred to him that it was continuous, and getting louder, instead of fading away.

A strange black fog began to drift through the air.  They froze, staring at each other, listening.  The rumble increased like – what?  It was a cross between an oncoming train, and – and – Thomas imagined this must be what an avalanche must sound like.

Then he knew what was going on.  The South Fork dam had broken!

Before he could share his insight, Regina’s face changed.  She stared up Clinton Street, mouth open, eyes wide with horror.  She pointed, incoherent noises issuing from her throat.  Thomas turned, and nearly fell off their precarious little raft.

The source of the crashing rumble was a towering wall of debris moving toward them.  A misty black cloud hung in the air, occasionally obscuring the horrific sight.  A writhing mass of tree roots, rooftops, planks, railroad pieces and other metal parts tumbled over and over upon itself.

The rumble had clarified into a roar of screaming and crashing as the rapidly approaching behemoth rolled toward them.   They couldn’t outrun it, either on or off their little craft.  Regina pointed to the nearest building.  The brick corners were coined, laid unevenly enough to make a decent ladder.  Thomas understood without a word.  They poled their way across the watery distance, desperation giving them strength and speed.

Regina looked at him as they grabbed the corner of the building.  “You go first,” she shouted over the noise.

Thomas didn’t understand why, but this was no time to stand around arguing etiquette.  He stood up on the raft, found a foothold and handhold, and clambered up the side of the building.  He slowed his ascent to look down at Regina.

Gritting her teeth in determination, she was making slow progress.  Looking up, she caught his eye as he waited, uncertainly, for her.  “Don’t wait for me!  Go!”  He could barely hear her over the roar.

Frustrated and helpless, he climbed up onto the roof, then lay on his stomach so that he could reach back down towards Regina.  She was making better time, but he feared the wall of debris would reach the roof before she would.  He scooted forward, upside down on the pitched roof, caught hold of her wrist, and managed to bodily yank her onto the roof beside him.

“Why did you have me go first?” he demanded angrily.

“No reason we should both die,” she answered. The words were no sooner out of her mouth then Thomas was absolutely certain they were both going to die.  With a grinding, crunching, screaming moan, the wave hit the building.

Book Two (Brains & Beauty)

Blurb:

Girl meets boy, falls in love at first sight. Kind of unfortunate for a married woman. He becomes her best friend, the only man in her life that she can really count on. She wishes there could be more to it. There can't be, but she can dream, can't she...?

Excerpt:

Was it really less than a year since she had witnessed the conflagration at the railroad yard? Once again, she faced smoking ruins that had once been a thriving industry. This time, it wasn't human made. Or at least, it wasn't deliberate.

The Washburn “A” had been a seven-and-a-half story building, and the explosion had been so large it shattered glass windows in the neighboring city of St. Paul. It left a crater in the middle of the mill district. The circle of destruction was ringed with the charred skeletons of mills that existed on the edge of the blast zone.

Regina was far from alone as she picked her way through the piles of rock and an occasional gear. People were already salvaging those things that weren’t still on fire, or too burnt to be of any value. Insurance men were there. She could tell who they were when she overheard two of them muttering together about whether the damage should be considered fire or explosion. Others came merely to gawk at the carnage. Still others, no doubt, were there to mourn.

She was amazed that there were only eighteen other people killed in the explosion. Considering the scope of the wreckage, it seemed to her it could have been so much worse. Regina felt a certain gratitude that there were so few new widows. The bereaved would fit on a single trolley car.

She circumnavigated the debris field, fascinated by the extent of the damage and wondering how to prevent anything like this from happening in Sewickley. If the new Hungarian rollers were going to create more dust, she was going to need to do something to improve ventilation.

Her eyes scanned for places where Henry might have been found. There were fallen walls everywhere – and nothing looked like a place where a man could be pinned down, and survive, even briefly.

When she returned to the hotel, the concierge was able to help her make the arrangements with the train station over the transportation of a coffin.

Finally, Mr. George Christian, Senior, and George Christian, Junior, collected her at the hotel to take her back to the train station.

"I am so sorry for your loss, Mrs. Waring," the elder Christian said.

"Thank you," Regina answered, realizing she was going to be hearing that sentence over and over in the next several months.

"I don't know why God spared me, and not your husband," Mr. Christian continued. "I almost came with him to the mill that afternoon, but my business detained me longer than I thought."

"Well," Regina reasoned, “it's a good thing that your business did detain you. Otherwise your son would also be suffering a loss in his family today.”

"Still, I feel responsible." Mr. Christian frowned.

"If there's anything we can do to help, please, let us know," the younger Mr. Christian said.

There is nothing so awful in the world as uncertainty. The train ride home alone, with Henry's coffin somewhere in the back of the train, was sad, but much less difficult than the trip to Minnesota had been.

Now, at least, Regina's brain had something concrete to work on. There were problems to solve, or, at least, she knew what the problems were going to be.

Author Interview:
What inspired you to write Wealth and Privilege and Brains and Beauty?
The first book, W&P, was inspired by my girlfriend's giant stack of books. She's a romance novel junkie. I was staying at her house and waiting for her before we went out to do something. While I was waiting, I idly began reading the back covers of the novels. And then I read more of them. And more of them. I ended up reading every single back cover for every book she had. It struck me: almost every book was set in the South. Every so often, one would be set in the West. Now, I'm a Yankee girl, what's so romantic about the North, or the East? I decided I needed to write a romance set in Pittsburgh - which is arguably North and East.
B&B was inspired by my readers. When I finished the first book, everyone looked deep into my eyes and said, "You're writing ANOTHER one, right?" Threats are kind of like inspiration, right?

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I think I knew by fourth or fifth grade that I wanted to be a writer. I used to tell stories to my best friend while we walked to school. I was definitely a storyteller by sixth or seventh grade. The other babysitters used to hate babysitting for the kids I normally sat for - I used to make up stories for the kids using their stuffed animals, and then the kids demanded the other babysitters do the same thing.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?
I must have been about four years old when I found a book of Peanuts cartoons in my father's desk drawer. I was so excited - this was an adult book, not a silly little kids book, and I could read all the words in it!

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
I adore biographies. I've just finished re-reading Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, and I'm excited because the next two books in my stack are both biographies. I swear that I write historic fiction just as an excuse to read a lot of biographies as part of my research.

What is your favorite book?
Funny, my all time favorite book is NOT a biography. Gone With the Wind is probably the one book that has had more influence on me that any other single book.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
Margaret Mitchell, of course, since she wrote Gone With the Wind! Beyond that, my other favorite author is David McCullough. He is a great storyteller. Both of my favorite two authors are thorough researchers and know how to make history come to life in bold, vibrant colors.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?
Elizabethan England, so I can see for myself who really wrote Shakespeare's plays. The evidence is completely lacking that Will did it himself.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?
Writing isn't difficult for me. It's just like talking, but I have to form the words with my fingers on the keyboard, instead of with my lips.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
Sadly, my husband is allergic to everything with fur. That's why my heroine Regina has two black Labrador Retrievers. Anthra and Bit are my fantasy dogs.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?
Oh, lordy, I love food way too much. I love sushi, and pizza, and pasta. Well, I MISS pizza and pasta - I've been on a diet, and those had to go :-( I'm from Wisconsin, so of course I like cheese. I love ethnic foods - Indian, and Japanese, and Chinese, and Vietnamese, and Thai, and German, and Mexican, and French, and Irish, and even British pub grub. And I wish I could be one of those people like my mother in law, who doesn't like chocolate. I'd hate to calculate the number of calories I consume in a month that have something to do with chocolate.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Be prepared for a long process, and don't let your ego trump your characters and your story. When you're done with your first draft, you are going to have to refine, and refine, and refine. Then editors are going to point out all the things you did wrong. Don't take that as a personal attack. Treat your characters like your children. You want what's best for them, right? Your characters deserve to be presented with a perfectly proofread book with no spelling or punctuation errors, no grammatical errors, no factual errors, no continuity errors, no plot holes, no half-baked dialogues, or other scenes that don't ring true.

That said, in the end, you also need to trust yourself. You are going to get bad advice from editors who think they know more than you do. You need to know when to listen to advice, and when to ignore advice. Don't discard advice in a bit of bruised ego, but think about advice when it's given, and ignore it when it's not the best thing for the story and the characters. You're not just telling a story. You're telling the truth.
