Description:

Gabriella is a witch. The problem is, she doesn't remember. She repressed the memories of her powers years ago when her mother was murdered. Now, the warlock who was responsible for her mother's death has set his sights on Gabriella. He is determined to use her fear to turn her to the dark side of magick…even if it kills her. Her mother's spirit is reaching out to warn her, but even that she pushes away. Desperate to save her daughter, the spirit finds a male witch-one that just happens to be in love with Gabriella. Darron is more than willing to help but the two young witches will have way more to battle than just an evil warlock. There are overbearing jocks and petty rich girls who get tempers flaring and often set Gabriella and Darron at odds.

There is more to the story than Gabriella and Darron could even imagine. There are terrible secrets to be revealed, battles to be waged, and lives will be lost. Only after Gabriella and Darron both come to terms with who they really are, and open themselves up to the true meaning of magick, can they have any hope of fulfilling their destiny.

Excerpt:

Her eyes scanned the room, from the pale blue sofa to the bloody dent in the wall. But she didn't need her eyes to know Darron was there. Her heart sensed his presence before her eyes saw him lying in a heap on the ground. His body shuttered with occasional spasms, and even though he wasn't fully conscious, his lips were twisted in a grimace of pain.

Uttering a gasp of surprise, Gabriella flew to his side. She knelt beside him, and choked back a sob as she took his hand in her own. She saw his chest rise and fall and was glad to know was alive, but she felt helpless as she watched his face contort in pain. She noticed something wet and sticky on her fingertips. She gently titled his head and saw a large gash that looked like it needed medical attention. The skin around the gash was so deeply bruised it looked almost black.

"Darron, what happened to you?"

He didn't move or reply. Gabriella moved her hand from the cut on his forehead, and her fingers dripped with blood. She bit her lower lip with fear. She knew enough about head injuries to know that the wound could be serious. She grabbed a few tissues from a box on the coffee table, and tried to apply pressure to the wound, but it was useless. The tissues were soaked through in seconds.

"Darron?" She squeezed his hand, and fought back tears of fear and frustration. "Darron, please open your eyes. Please be all right!"

He squirmed and groaned a little in response. Looking at his contorted features, Gabriella felt incompetent and useless. She didn't know what to do to help him. The cut must need stitches. The blood was gushing through her fingertips, and she was sure his life was slipping away just as quickly.

More than anything, Gabriella wanted to help Darron, to end his suffering. Her thoughts, her desperation, caused something deep inside of her to stir. Something that had long been napping was awoken. The power she had fought so hard to deny was forcing its way to the surface. This time she didn't struggle against that power. Her instinct to hide from it was finally overcome by the thought of losing someone else she cared about.

Gabriella was pulling strength and warmth from the earth, as though her legs were tree roots taking nourishment from the element. A tingling sensation began in the tips of her toes and spread slowly though her body as she breathed in the essence of the element of air. Her blood flowed and grew warm, the element of water, bringing the power to the surface. She was overcome by a vigorous strength as she envisioned her spirit encircled by the element of fire. She felt so powerful that she thought she could stop the world from churning if that was what she wished. Gabriella focused the power, remembering for a moment her mother's lessons. She looked down at her battered friend. She willed him to open his eyes and look at her. She demanded it of him.

Gabriella would have thought it was impossible, but she felt herself grow warmer. Her face dripped with perspiration. The power within her reached a climax. Then finally, when she thought she might burst, she felt the energy release. It seeped through her fingers, and shined with an illumination that only she could see. She heard herself chanting unfamiliar words, and scarcely recognized her own voice.

"By the power of earth, water, fire and air,

Heal this man who's in my care.

Goddess, hear your daughter's plea.

As I will it, so mote it be!"

Gabriella repeated the words three times. Three was the number of power. Then she watched as the wound on Darron's forehead healed before her eyes, becoming smaller and smaller, until finally it was gone. The blood was still warm and sticky, but beneath the blood, the skin was smooth and unmarred. Even the horrible bruise had vanished. Gabriella stared in open astonishment, marveling at the work she had done.

HER EYES FLASHED open with a start as she gasped for air. Heart pounding, she reached up and felt her moist face. Her eyes were wide open, yet she saw nothing. Blackness surrounded her. She heard what sounded like white noise all around her. Reaching down to feel her body, she found that her skin was cool and wet. A blinding white light streaked across the black sky above, forcing her eyes closed for a moment. Rain. She realized that she was hearing rain beat down all around her.
She sat up, with some effort, her muscles felt very sore. She felt her stomach and thought that it seemed smaller than it should be. Odd. With another flash of lightning, she saw waves pounding the beachhead in front of her. Consumed by confusion, she struggled to remember where she was. How did I get here? Through the haze, she knew one thing. She was soaking wet and feeling a chill. She needed a place to dry out.
Behind her she saw only trees and darkness. Ahead, she saw the blackness of water as far as her eyes could focus. To her left, she spotted a cliff jutting out of the water and up into the emptiness of the sky. There were a number of trees pushed up against what looked like an overhang off the side of the cliff. That's probably the driest spot around here, she thought. Pushing her wet hair out of her eyes and running her fingers through it, she couldn't help but think that it seemed a little longer than it should. She assumed that was because it was wet. Where the hell am I? Her thoughts were fuzzy and she could not put the details together, as hard as she tried. She wrapped her hair around itself in a quick ponytail to keep it out of the way.
Still sitting on the sand and looking around, she wondered if there was anyone else out here. "Hello?" The crash of the waves and sounds of the storm drowned out her voice, even to herself. "HELLO!" Listening, she heard nothing. Wait, was that someone calling? Looking left and right as the lightning continued to flash, she saw no one-only empty beach for about a hundred meters in each direction. The sand pushed up against the cliffs on the left, and the tree line came out to meet the water on the right.
She put her left hand on the wet sand and her right hand on her thigh to brace herself to stand. Her right hand felt something hard and leathery. Her fingers traced the object. If she did not know better she would say it was a knife. Perplexed, she wondered, why would I have a knife strapped to my thigh?

She managed to stand, though confusion still reigned over her senses. The rain and waves both let up for a few seconds. There it was. Someone was definitely shouting. It was coming over the water.

Book Description:

"…Death was a dream of sleep where the eternally dying dream the sleep of death. The undeniable evidence in the stillness of her being, the stark paleness of her complexion, and the lack of blood pooling from her cuts after climbing through the window whispered dark truths in her ears. Rigor Mortis. There was nothing familiar to Jamie about her skin. Time and time again, she found herself asking what had happened, only to arrive at the hard won conclusion that she, Jamie Lund, wasn't alive anymore. Somehow in the foolhardy night, she'd been a dumb girl. She'd gotten herself killed…"

From the mind of Stavros, the critically acclaimed author of Blood Junky, comes a new twisted tale of horror and adventure. An average girl, living in the city is murdered. Nothing new, right? It happens every day. Just another statistic. That is…until she woke up dead.

Chapter 45 Promo photo Chapter45PromoGraphic.jpg

Trapped within her own decaying shell, the dead girl struggles to piece together the awful events of her untimely death and hunt down the man responsible. Armed only with a kiss from an ancient Egyptian God, a pockmarked memory, her ex-boyfriend, and a murder of crows Jamie Lund comes face to face with something more terrifying and real than mere death…she suffers the agony of being undead!

With twelve black & white illustrations and a full colored cover from tattoo artist, Charles Hearn, this sardonic tale comes alive like no other zombie story, popping from the page with stunning, unnatural brilliance. Dead Girl: A Romantic Zombie Tale of Revenge will keep the reader on the edge of their seat suspended in this unique supernatural thriller.

Praise for Dead Girl: A Romantic Zombie Tale of Revenge…

Chapter 6 Promo photo Chapter6PromoGraphic.jpg

"A Bittersweet punch with a suspenseful plot and somber romance, showing us the vulnerable perspective of death from the other side. Definitely, not to be missed!" -Tara Lindsey Hall; Writer/Editor

"I couldn't put it down. I loved it. You are a great writer. Can't wait to read the next one." -Bethany Tanner-Evanko, a Facebook Post

"Just wanted you to know…I was about to wrap Dead Girl in festive Christmas paper but decided to read the first page...now I'm on page 88 and I'm keeping the book...and I'm not going to bed anytime soon." -Sabrina Buckman, a Facebook Post on Dec 21, 2011

Chapter 30 Promo photo Chapter30PromoGraphic.jpg

"WOW! Holy shit…Thank you for this. Thank you for bringing forth a story that more than restores my faith in a type that has gnawed at my entrails for over a decade. It was different, it was refreshing, it was a damn awesome break from the "same old, same old" crap this genre is filled with. It's so hard to find an original zombie tale any more. And even harder to find someone who can make an old story their own in some personal way. But this? Definitely not the same old crap." -C. Dulaney, author of the Roads Less Traveled series

"OMZG! (Oh My Zombie Goodness) I absolutely Loved this book. Dead Girl is not the conventional zombie book, but a great one! It's a book of mystery and revenge with Egyptian influence felt within the pages. Plus the actual attention to detail of rigor mortis and decomposition of the body is spot on and a great additive to the book. I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good revenge tale. Plus I couldn't put the book down!" -Sunshine Rose, Chicago, ILL. April 2013

Dead Girl Amuet photo DGAmuet.png

I.

Jamie didn't hear the splash when her body hit the water. She didn't feel the cold grip of swirling liquid engulf her or lift her back up to the surface minutes later. She never noticed a murder of crows perched on the railings of the dilapidated concrete bridge. Or the way moonlight reflected off their coal black wings, shimmered in the rippling river and her wet hair. Jamie didn't see, feel, or hear much of anything anymore. Because at twenty-two… Jamie Lund was dead.

The water carried her like a baby and birthed her to the grassy bank on the other side of the bridge. A branch grabbed the black mini-skirt that she had worn that night and held it against the tug. A thousand ebon eyes watched her body drift and moor like a boat. A cold wind bent the tall grass on the river's edge and filled the night with wings. Against the churning bubble and the damp lights of the city in the distance, a cacophony of beaks erupted. Caws like locusts fell from the sky.

As if struck by a hammer to the chest, breath fueled Jamie's lungs. An awakening gasp burst through icy, cold lips and teeth that were filled with muddy leaves and liquid. Jamie's back arched and her head rose from the water with a jolt. Her eyes were milky white and distant. She sucked in a gulp of air with the grate of a straw searching for that last drop of soda under the ice; raspy like thorns - broken as the wind in the hollow of a tree. Her arms pushed up and drove her hands deep into riverbank mud. The chips and cracks in her red- polished nails were covered with dirt. Crows swarmed above her as a single mood. She coughed the river from her throat and pulled her shaking body from the frigid wet.

Ebon eyes glared at the wretched girl from the sky, from the trees, and their concrete perch on the dilapidated bridge as she struggled with stiff limbs to drag her sore and aching body through the tall weeds to the road. Jamie sat at the edge of the busted tarmac and looked around as her vision slowly tuned into her surroundings. The moon smiled down on her, a faint yellow, illuminating a patch of earth that she had never been to before. Nothing was familiar. Everything felt wrong. Fog peeled back from her memory like Russian nesting dolls, opening into themselves, getting smaller and smaller with the same effect, revealing nothing. She didn't know how or why she was here. Worry blossomed inside her chest like a fruit basket.

She tried to call out. To simply speak, to utter a sound, to work her feeble voice, but her throat burned hot nails all the way down her windpipe. A tiny squeak parted from her icy blue lips and she placed a hand to her throat. It was fraught with pain. She struggled. She worked her jaw to loosen her voice box, wind the organ up to play, but a flash of memory slammed into the back of her skull. It shook her shoulders awake, repeating on a loop. Scorching Jamie's cerebral cortex, her eyelids fluttered.

She was looking at herself in a freestanding mirror - getting dressed. A column of jet-black hair fell past bare shoulders, framing her pretty face. She had a lithe, curvy shape, sensual lips, and thin fingers that pulled the zipper of her skirt up the side of her hip. She turned the cute little black number around so that the fastener was in the back. She straightened her black lace bra, smiled, and then did her make up. She was going out...

But, where?

Suddenly, Jamie felt wet and shivered. Fear crept past her damp clothes and crawled under her skin as she lifted herself onto the road. Every muscle rebelled. Her knees argued at the thought of bending. The joints in her fingers and elbows ached, popping with movement. Her back felt as if someone had surgically implanted a slab of concrete, and a blinding pain ran from her neck down her spine. Her shoes were missing, toes numb, the sides of her feet scrapped along the busted edge of the tarmac as she rose crooked and wobbly onto two weak legs. It was a horrible dream, unspooling limbs for the audience of the blackbirds. Nothing was clear, nothing was familiar. A dull ringing filled Jamie's ears and she felt cold. Bitter and deep, that sprang from her center. Jamie Lund felt the cold that no one ever feels but which we're all made to visit. Somewhere vaguely in the coils of her mind the little lost dead girl was reminded that it was July. Its not supposed to be this cold out! Slowly, Jamie wrapped her arms across her chest and lumbered toward the distant lights of the city.

My Review:

I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Jamie Lund wakes up in the water without any memory of how she ended up there. She pulls herself up and out of the water wondering how she got there. She has no clue what to do but she heads back to her home. Upon arriving at her home Jamie can't enter her apartment she comes to the realization that her purse is missing which has her keys in it along with her cell phone. She is thinking now this is just great her keys are gone as well as her phone so she can't call anyone for help and to top it all off she now has no ID. Jamie breaks into her own home and decides she needs a shower. After taking her shower Jamie looks in the mirror and wonders who it was that was staring back at her. Is that her in the mirror? Is that what she looks like now? Jamie checks herself out and has flash back to what has happened to her and is shocked to learn that she is dead. Jamie doesn't remember who killed her or how she ended up in the water but she aims to find out if it is the last thing on earth she does.

Jamie goes to her ex-boyfriend and asks him for help. She asks him to help her find out who killed her. Billy, Jamie's ex-boyfriend is a very nice and sweet guy who would do anything for Jamie. Billy has not been dating anyone since Jamie broke up with him six months ago he is still in love with Jamie. So Billy and Jamie go on a long road hunting down her killer. Jamie and Billy both get their selves into alot of different messes along the way. Billy has got the police on him thinking he is the one who killed Jamie. While they are trying to find her killed they both at the same time are having to stay one step a head of the law to keep Billy from being arrested and prove that he did not kill Jamie.

Jamie is upset because she has gone and got herself killed. She thinks that if she had never left Billy she would still probably be alive. She realizes that she is still in love with Billy and that she never stopped loving him. Billy and Jamie have been in love with each other since high school. Jamie figures out why she left Billy in the first place. She finds out that she actually left him for different reasons than she thought at the time. Will Jamie find out who killed her? Will she get the revenge that she wants and thinks she deserves? Will Billy get framed for her death? Will Billy and Jamie live happily ever after? Can someone who is alive and someone who is undead have a relationship?

Dead Girl was not what I was expecting in a zombie book and I have read a lot of zombie books. Jamie doesn't go around saying "brains, brains, brains". No she can talk just as well as any person who is still alive. I really loved Dead Girl even though it is not like any other walking dead book. I think that is what made it so interesting. Once I picked it up I didn't want to put it down. I wanted to find out what happened to Jamie, well I was going to say just as much as she did but I don't think that could be possible since I have never been there. But you did feel like you were right there beside her trying to help her find her killer. Dead Girl is so cool in that it makes you think or wonder what a dead person may think or feel. If you have not read Dead Girl then I suggest that you give it a try if you have read and like zombie books and even if you have not read them before. If you have not read a zombie book before then Dead Girl would be a great beginning.

Description:

In ancient Britannia, the warrior who brought down the king stag was named the defender of the land.

Eartha's brother Balen has been in love with Princess Galiene since they were children. Upon the death of the High King, the tribesmen of the realm vie for the throne, and with it, the hand of the fair princess.

Balen is desperate to win his lady, but a rival tribesman is equally determined to keep them apart.

With her brother, her dearest friend, and the country she loves all hanging in the balance, Eartha must do the unthinkable to ensure her brother's victory in the stag hunt. Sometimes true love needs a helping hand...or some blood to be spilled.

Excerpt:

Balen's words became no more than whispers as the herbs in the tea started to do their job. Before long, he fell into a fitful sleep, still tossing and calling out to Galiene even in his dreams. But it was Eartha who clutched his hand and lovingly smoothed the hair from his eyes until at last he settled into a sounder slumber.

"I will not let you die, Balen," she whispered, though she knew he could no longer hear her. "Nor will I allow you to lose that which you hold most dear."

Eartha stood from the straw bed and stared into the fire. Suddenly her cheeks were blazing, but it had little to do with the warmth of the flames. There was a reason Eartha had kept her brother's injuries a secret. If anyone knew Balen was hurt, he would have been forced to forfeit his place in the stag hunt. But that wasn't going to happen. Eartha was not going to let Arn win. For her brother, for her dear friend Galiene, but most of all, for the country she loved, Eartha had devised a plan.

"Hold on to your hope, dear brother. All is not yet lost."

Fate rides on the wings of life, steering life along its unforeseen journey, thus fulfilling one's destiny. Fate can also bring two paths to cross, though traveling in opposite directions, lives that had once ran parallel. So it was in the lives of Trevor Logan and Faith Thomas, two paths traveling parallel, destined to be one at a young age. Then came a sinister plan, painted with pictures of deception, sending their lives reeling in opposite directions. But after over twenty years, fate caused their paths to cross once again, by way of an unusual chain of events. Their paths crossed just when Faith's life was in danger, leaving Trevor to risk his own to save hers, thus keeping a strange promise he had made to her father-over twenty years before.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, Graduation Day, and blue skies stretched from one side of heaven to the other, with a few white clouds dotted here and there just to add a bit of color. A temporary stage sat on the football field, adorned in blue and white, the school colors. The banners waved gently in the warm tender breeze, as if waving farewell to the seniors seated before them. The principal, vice principal and guidance counselor all sat up on the stage, with Faith's father as well, who was to give a prayer to begin the ceremony. The bright faces of seventy-six seniors sitting in folding chairs faced them, eagerly waiting to begin the next phase of their lives. They were seated in alphabetical order with the men wearing blue and the ladies in white. The bleachers adjacent the stage were filled with proud parents, including Trevor's mom and dad.
On cue, Mr. Thomas rose and approached the microphone. He gave a short speech on how proud he was of each senior, and especially the one of his own. After embarrassing Faith, he proceeded with a very beautiful prayer for the graduating class. The principal then took over, giving a short dignified speech. The vice principal then added a speech of his own, pointing out some humorous events that happened this past year. The football field echoed with laughter, at the expense of certain humiliated seniors. The principal then came forward to begin handing out diplomas as the vice principal called out the names of each graduate.
All seventy-six seniors made their way across the stage and back to their seats, where they all stood eagerly waiting for the announcement, to then throw their caps high into the air in celebration. The principal gazed out over the graduates, as an unusual smirk grew upon his face. He then made a most unusual request, calling Faith Thomas back to the stage. All eyes fell curiously upon Faith as she made her way through her classmates and then slowly onto the stage. Faith wore a confused expression as she stared into her father's smiling face. His glassy eyes then turned to her rear-causing hers to follow. To her surprise, Trevor was approaching, wearing a smirk of his own.
Trevor stepped close, placing her hands within his. "Faith," he said with a twinkle in his eyes, "I pledge my whole heart and soul to you…today and for all the tomorrows that the Lord will bless me with." He lowered to a knee, his sneakers and blue jeans peeking out from under his graduation gown. Faith's mouth dropped and eyes watered, as all the girls in the crowd squealed. "Faith, will you marry me?" he asked as silence fell-all waiting for her reply.
With tears of joy streaming down her cheeks, Faith watched as Trevor opened a tiny black velvet box, revealing what she thought was the most beautiful ring she had ever laid eyes on. Everyone in the audience quietly waited for her response. Too choked up to speak, she nodded in agreement as Trevor slipped on the ring. The crowd erupted in celebration, as the graduating class yelled while throwing their caps high into the air.
But not everyone shared in the excitement. One particular senior still sat in her seat with her cap still on her head, glaring through tear-stained eyes at the happy couple on stage. All her hopes and dreams were laid to waste by a tiny diamond ring. With Faith away at college, and Trevor at home attending the nearby community college, Denise had planned on turning up the heat on her pursuit for Trevor. With Faith gone and not running interference, it would be only a matter of time before Trevor would give in to his desires. She was attractive enough to weaken the knees of any devout man, which left an eighteen-year-old hormonal machine without a prayer of surviving her seduction.

Shadow Embraced
(Haven #1)

No escape.

Those words haunt Scar's dreams. She thinks the creature that terrorises her while asleep isn't real, but when she's abducted and taken to a reform school meant to contain creatures too dangerous to function in society, she starts to wonder whether she isn't some monster.

She turns to an underground fight club full of vampires, werewolves and witches established by the students to control her urges, and who is she kidding, she loves to fight.

When fighters begin to disappear, turning Scar into the prime suspect, she must race to prove her innocence before her true nature is exposed.

The only problem is that she's not entirely sure she's innocent.

Chapter 1

_______________________

THE PALE GIRL KNOCKS ME BACK AGAINST THE fleshy wall of the crowd with a couple of hard smacks. I scramble away from a woman in a purple dress, my eyes on my opponent. Over the pulsing music, the crowd keeps up their tribal chant:

"Fight! Fight! Fight!"

This is my first time at The Basement - innovative name for a club set up on the second-storey. The dim lights and smoky atmosphere make the graffiti on the walls blaze. Between the pinball machines, sagging lounges, and the close-pressed crowd, there isn't much room to manoeuvre.

"What are you waiting for?" the girl hisses. She could be Snow White with her porcelain skin and long, raven hair. "You started this. It was between me and her." She extends one long finger towards my best friend, Alex.

Alex watches from the side-line. This is becoming the norm. Whenever we go out she always gets in trouble and I'm the one to fix it - usually with some bloodshed.

I don't know what Alex did to piss this poisonous cow off, but now I want blood.

My opponent launches at me. I shield my face from her punches. It all comes down to waiting for an opening. She's fast, almost as fast as me. It's difficult to maintain my balance long enough to strike back.

I duck under a right hook and seize my chance. I throw an uppercut and knock her pale ass to the ground.

A single word roars through the room. "Scatter!"

The tight circle breaks and chaos erupts. The girl springs to her feet. The need to fight still blazes in her eyes, but there's something else emerging as well. Her eyes change to a deep crimson. I stumble back, trying to suppress the cold fear swimming in my gut.

The woman in purple looms closer. Her dress drags along the floor as she moves. Grabbing my opponent by the arm, she whispers something in her ear.

The woman's gaze meets mine. Her eyes are as white as quartz with a translucent glaze. I can't take my attention off of her. I hadn't noticed the long black stick she carries until now. Her body twists in my direction and she pushes people out of the way with her stick as she nears, dragging the girl - who thrashes and screams - behind her. The girl's red eyes still focused on me.

I can't move.

The room plunges into darkness, leaving only the faint bank of emergency lights marking the stairs.

"Come on, Scar. We have to get out of here." Alex seizes my arm, forcing me back into reality. She pulls me towards the scattering of kids that remain from the mass exodus.

By the time we reach the exit, sirens howl above the noise. The only means of escape is cut off and people charge back up the stairs, taking refuge on the darkened dance floor. The cops block the exit and seal the room.

A strong hand grips my shoulder and jerks me backwards into a group of girls. I fall to the ground and heavy individuals trample on my legs. A cop forces my hands behind my back and secures them in cool metal cuffs.

He pulls me to my feet and leads me down the packed staircase.

"I've got it from here," a familiar voice says as a hand clutches my shoulder. "I'm sure they still need your help inside."

"Okay," the cop says, relinquishing his hold of me. "If you're sure."

"I am." The new cop takes me over to his car and unfastens the cuffs. Opening the back door, he says, "You know, I can't keep doing this for you."

I open my mouth to say something, but he cuts me off.

"I don't want to hear it. We'll talk about this at home."

I slide onto the vinyl seat and close the door. "Sorry, Dad," I whisper.

I lean my head against the cold window of the car door and wait for the car to start up. It takes about five minutes before Dad's sitting behind the wheel and we're heading away from the club.

An involuntary shiver creeps up my spine as the image of the woman in purple comes to mind. It really looked as if she was coming for me. I don't even want to think about what she wanted. Turning my attention to the passing scenery, I shake all thoughts of that woman out of my head.

The streetlights forge speech bubbles of illumination in the air. A faint glow from the moon casts eerie shadows behind the dark clouds. The early morning streets of Sydney are still packed with people coming and going from clubs. Most of the girls look like they borrow all their clothes from their little sisters. The guys, on the other hand, choose a different style; fighting hard to keep their pants from falling down. For some reason, they think it's an appealing look.

I turn my head to face the back of Dad's seat. His messy auburn hair pokes out from beneath his blue hat. He takes an occasional glimpse at me from the central mirror.

The car slams to the right as we turn a corner and my heart jerks against my ribs. We stop at the curb in front of an aging two-storey redbrick townhouse. Dad gets out and moves around to my door. He opens it and waits for me to get out - without saying a single word to me.

I glance at the house. Mum stands in the open doorway, and she doesn't look happy. She still has her nurse uniform on. Strands of tangled sandy hair fall free of her ponytail.

I stop in front of her. "Hi, Mum." My voice comes out as a whisper.

Mum stares at me with puffy hazel eyes for a moment before turning around and going back inside.

"You'd better get to your room." Dad enters the apartment and leaves me standing in the doorway. "Your mother and I will speak with you later."

I force my legs to continue moving, staring at the brownish carpet that lines the floor.

Gripping the banister, I launch myself up the stairs. The scent of lavender and bleach drifting around me brings a nauseous wave to my stomach.

I rush to my room, ignoring the loud conversation coming from my parents' room, and close the door behind me. All the movie stars and bands from the posters covering my walls watch me with accusing eyes.

Wiping the tears away, I throw myself onto the bed without even bothering to pull the sheets down. Feeling the soft mattress beneath me, I draw my eyes shut. I can only muster enough strength to kick my shoes off before the endless abyss of sleep overtakes me.

* * *

The scene plays out as if I'm watching a movie. I stand in a church. Don't ask me why - I'm not religious, and I'm not even sure if I've set foot inside a real one. Thin streamers of light drift through the dirt encrusted stained glass, making spider webs glisten high up in the rafters. The few pews that remain standing sag. The rest is kindling strewn across the floor.

I move down the aisle. The floorboards creak beneath my feet. Each step launches billows of dust through the air. I can see it. A single mirror stands at the far end beside a pedestal that holds a golden chalice. Believe me, I don't want to be anywhere near it, but my feet have a mind of their own.

The mirror is not normal. Its surface casts no reflection. All I can see beneath the glass is a vast sea of jet-black nothingness, and yet, I know something is hiding there within the shadows. Something that waits for me, watching me. That's what scares me the most.

'No escape,' a voice that doesn't sound human sneers.

A scent drifts past my nose and makes my mouth water. It smells like cinnamon and honey, but I know it isn't. My gaze dances around the hall, coming to rest on the chalice.

As I reach out, every nerve screams I must have it. Using my other hand, I try to stop myself. I don't want it, I only have to tell my mutinous hand that. It won't stop. I grip the smooth stem. It pulsates with warmth. The thick crimson liquid swirls within the bowl. I raise the cup to my mouth and my heart races as the warm liquid touches my lips.

'No escape,' the voice repeats in a low growl.

My Review:

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Scar is a Dahampir which is a half- vampire/half-human. Her family has hid this from her; her whole life. But then Scar starts going through the change earlier than anyone thought she would. When the change came upon her, Scar had no idea what was going on. She almost kills her best friend Alex and puts her in the hospital. Scar is taken away to a place where there are other people or should i say creatures? (well I don't exactly like that word either) like her. Scar doesn't understand what is going on and no one will explain to her what is happening to her and why she is there. She wants to call her mother you know to let her know where she is, she knows that her mother will be worried. But the ones who have taken her won't let her call home. They say that everything has been taken care of. I guess they mean that they have already contacted Scar's mother but I am not sure that is what they mean exactly.

Scar has started going through the change early and no one expected this. Everyone at the school seems to hate Scar or this is what she feels or since. She thinks they all hate her. They won't explain to her what is happening to her or explain the rules to her. They think that if she doesn't know the rules and what to do then that makes her a dumb a**. If someone has never been given the knowledge of something doesn't make them a dumb a**. If everybody knew everything wouldn't this make them god? If you don't know, you don't know.

Scar is having some issues with one of the girls at the school. This girl just will not stay out of Scar's face. So Scar and this girl get into a fight and this is one of the rules that must not be broken. Well Scar and this girl get caught fighting. A werewolf comes along and pulls them apart and stops the fight of course. The werewolf is a part of the student council and so therefore gets a hand in deciding her faith. The council puts their heads together and decide that fighting with the big dog (no pun intended here) which just happens to be the werewolf is to be her punishment for getting caught fighting. After the fight is over "the big dog" tells her not to get caught fighting again. What I am thinking at this point is that by saying it this way "don't get caught fighting" again to mean that it is ok to fight as long as you don't get caught doing it, right?

Someone at the school is attacking the students and everyone thinks that Scar is the attacker. Evan Scar herself is not sure if it is her at times. Strange things are happening to her that she can't explain or can't remember sometimes. Scar must prove that she is innocent of hurting anyone. Will she be able to prove her innocents? Can she stay alive long enough?

Would I recommend Shadow Embraced? You bet your bottom dollar I would. Shadow Embraced is an extremely good book. I like that Scar was a girl who could take care of herself and didn't need a man to do it for her. Scar wasn't scared of anyone man, woman or creature. She would fight anyone who happens to get in her face.
