Book Description from Goodreads:

Sometimes love lasts forever...but maybe it shouldn't. Willowwind, a beautiful Civil War era bed and breakfast, is run by a loving couple, Adrian and Caroline Stone, but it's also haunted by a long-dead Civil War era vampiress, Lilith, who believes the man, Adrian, is her reincarnated soldier/lover and will do anything to have him, body-heart-and soul, for her own again, no matter how many she must kill. But Adrian's wife, Caroline, along with the help of the ghost of her dead father, will do anything to make sure that doesn't happen.

My Review:

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Caroline Stone has just lost her father she has been taking care of him for the last few years. Her father Edward Winters was a very kind and loving man. Caroline misses him very much and is having a hard time handling his death. After taking care of him for the last year she decided to take up her career as a professional psychotherapist. She thinks that maybe she can help their guest at the inn her and husband Adrian run together. She wants to help people with their grief. She thinks her helping others cope with their grief may just help her deal with her own grief. She can't get her father off of her mind. She wakes up her thinking about him and she goes to sleep with him on her mind. She feels angry and guilty because he died.

There have been some strange things happening at the inn. Adrian, Caroline's husband has been seeing a woman; well he is not sure what he is seeing. He doesn't know if he is seeing a ghost or if he is losing his mind. Something attacked one of their guests and now something is attacking their neighbor's animals. Wayne their neighbor is a farmer and has lived on the farm all of his life with his mother. His mother tries to keep Wayne all to herself. At Times she acts like a wife instead of a mother. Ever since her husband died she has tried to replace him with Wayne.

Adrian is a very caring and loving person; he thinks all life is precious. He has not told his wife about the woman he has been seeing. Caroline knows something is upsetting him and that he is keeping something from her. But she knows her husband and besides she knows from her experience as psychotherapist that he will tell her in his own time, when he is ready.

The woman that Adrian is seeing lived back during the civil war era. She thinks Adrian is her husband and she wants him back and she will do anything she has to in order to get him back. She will kill anyone who gets in her way including Caroline. She is very jealous of Caroline. She wants her husband and her home back no matter what the cost is.

The Woman In Crimson is definitely not like any other book about witches, vampires and ghost that I have ever read. There is a lot of twist and turns that will keep you on your toes just trying to keep up. It will keep you turning those pages so fast that you will probably have little burnt marks on your fingertips wanting to know what The Woman In Crimson is going to do next. Or in my case flipping the pages in my e-reader so fast my pc is starting to smoke. I loved the new twist about vampires and witches and I think you will too. So I think if you have not read The Woman In Crimson I say what are you waiting on?

Book Description:

After-life just got a lot more complicated

Maggie is a Soul Collector. It's her job to transport souls from the Living Realm to the After - but during a mission to find a stolen soul, she ends up stuck in a teen mean girl's body.

Trapped, Maggie's soul is catapulted into Ally's life - and the human world she hasn't experienced for one hundred years. But, as a descendant of the most powerful beings in the After, Maggie must rescue Ally before the girl's soul dies…

To survive, Maggie must uncover devastating secrets - because with one soul taken by a terrifying enemy, Maggie's could be next!

Author Interview:

The Avid Reader: What inspired you to write Soul Taken?

Katlyn Duncan: The idea slammed into me one day when I was walking into my local CVS. The question popped up first, “What would happen if a reaper was collecting a soul and instead, ended up inside of the body?” Then the story transformed from there.

The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Katlyn Duncan: It wasn’t a conscious choice, I just wrote because I loved to explore new places and characters that came to me. But, a few years ago I started becoming serious about my writing.

The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Katlyn Duncan: I remember going to the library when I was a kid and taking out as many picture books as I could. So probably around five or six years old.

The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Katlyn Duncan: I love paranormal reads whether they are YA or adult. Recently I’ve started reading more romance and contemporary but I always love a good paranormal.

The Avid Reader: What is your favorite book?

Katlyn Duncan: Hands down, The Giver by Lois Lowry. I think I’ve read that book seven times since sixth grade. Love. It.

The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Katlyn Duncan: Since I love paranormal, I have to say Kelley Armstrong. Her Women of the Otherworld series changed my life (Clay…swoon).

The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Katlyn Duncan: Probably to the 1800s. The time seemed so romantic and the outfits of the time are amazing. I’d like to experience it for myself.

The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Katlyn Duncan: It depends on what I am writing. When I am not on deadline it comes easy, but when a deadline looms I find myself distracted doing things that I wouldn’t normally want to do…like clean the house.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Katlyn Duncan: I have a 5 year old Wheaten Terrier and I love her to bits, even though the nickname Wheaten Terror is not too far off. She is insane.

The Avid Reader: What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Katlyn Duncan: Cheesecake. I am a cheesecake snob actually. And I wish I could eat it everyday for every meal.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Katlyn Duncan: Read and write a lot. Practice makes perfect. Your first MS probably won’t sell but how many people can honestly say they’ve written a book? Even if it lives in your desk drawer for the rest of your life, that is an accomplishment.

Content Warning: explicit sex, emotional torment, graphic violence

Excerpt:

Thick, rolling clouds kept the air moist as Liam paced the confines of his home. Ice covered the stone walls, snow swirled and danced along the floor of the cave. He shivered, the rattle of scales music to his ears. After two hundred years, he was finally able to break out of the horrid humanoid form.

Padding to the mouth of his cave, he stared out. White clouds soared around the mountain's peak. Snow danced along the ledge, piling where it was easiest. The air was cold, crisp, sweet, much as it had been when he'd grown up in the Highlands.

He tapped his claws against the stone, his eyes searching through the mist, for what he did not know. The need to search, to find an answer to the elusive want had plagued him for days, disturbing his hunting, his rest. Nights were filled with the image of a female, her hair flowing over her shoulders, wide, trust filled eyes staring at him. Her hands outstretched, reaching toward him. The visage tickled at his memory of another woman, one dressed as a slave, following the footsteps of a vampire…one he'd feared.

Curling his tail around himself, he settled on his haunches, shoulders hunched against the chill as he stared out over the human realm. Faint, his hunger stirred. Soon he'd need to hunt, both for food and for the one who had done him ill. The sharp point of his tail beat a slow, steady rhythm against the floor as he tilted his head, listening to the howling winds, the bitter screams of the winter weather, and the elusive sound of a beating heart.

* * * *

"Do not dawdle, Una, our time grows short." Harsh, bitter, Anagor's voice scraped along her nerves as she hurried through the stone corridor. Stale air and dust sat in her throat, gagging her as she scurried among the debris. The sound of claws on stone sent shivers up her spine as some unseen vermin darted from her path. The heavy cloak she wore hid the shimmering fabric of her priestess robes but did little to battle the cold soaking through to her flesh.

"'Tis cold, this place we are being sent." Una shivered and ducked beneath a heavy beam. Her hand pressed against the icy stone as she struggled to maintain her balance on the uneven ground.

"You may think so."

Anagor's sneer pricked at the ready temper she'd struggled to control. Biting her lip, she kept the sharp retort to herself. She glanced up, her gaze falling on the thick wooden door Anagor stood before. He grinned as he gripped the handle and pulled. Dust and pebbles rained down as it creaked and groaned in protest before scraping along the ground to open. Shock ripped through Una as the pale streak of light spread along the frozen ground, wrapping around her with its icy chill.

Snow slapped at the ground, swirling in a maelstrom of white. It blew through the portal into the opening, piling around her sandal clad feet. Teeth chattering, she rubbed at her arms as Anagor stepped back, reaching for her cloak, all but shoving her into the freezing air.

"Duty does not wait for one who whines," he snapped, his grip tightening around her arm.

Bitter winds lashed at her dress, whipping the fabric around her legs. Her cheeks and toes burned, and fog formed in front of her with every breath. Her skin tightened, prickles of heat dancing along the surface. Wrapping her arms around herself, she fought to ward off the chill even as she felt it sinking deeper into her skin.

"My lord, I would hurry, but this wind…it is so cold, I fear I'll freeze."

"Nonsense. Amuliana would not send you forth to freeze. You have served her well."

Una stumbled, her hand catching at Anagor. Pain ripped through her, shredding her heart as she wavered, yet it wasn't her pain. Rather, it was his. His pale eyes stared at her, hate stirring in them, along with something else. Something terrifying.

Backing away from him, Una trembled. Her fingers clutched at her clothes, wrapping them tighter around her. Each step back she took, he advanced two, his eyes fastened on her throat. He grinned, a merciless expression which revealed blackened nubs for teeth and puss filled gums.

"What is this?" Una swallowed, the rising fear pushing any thought but escape from her mind.

"My penance has waited too long, Una. I will have what I seek this night." Anagor licked his lips, his eyes darkening with hunger.

About the Author:

Hearken Author photo kristenday.jpg

I am a southern belle at heart with a crazy streak that desperately tries to escape at every opportunity. I love all things nostalgic, rustic, and quirky. I've been told I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but I prefer to think of them as kaleidoscope glasses - swirling and morphing reality into something I can digest (who hasn't pretended those pasty lima beans were really kiwi strawberry jelly beans?).

I am the author of the DAUGHTERS OF THE SEA trilogy, which includes FORSAKEN, AWAKEN, and CHOSEN (Winter 2012). I love all books, but really enjoy writing young adult, paranormal romances. I've loved to write for as long as I can remember. My first published work was my poem RED in second grade (you guessed it - it was a poem about the color red - life altering, I know) that won me 5 gold stars and a spot in my elementary school's poetry book. That's when my addiction to the written word officially began. I was the only kid in fifth grade that actually enjoyed diagramming sentences. Go ahead and laugh - it's okay.

When I'm not writing I'm making jewelry, painting, drinking sweet tea, watching the discovery channel, or going on random adventures in the mountains of North Carolina with my amazing husband. I graduated from Appalachian State University and dream of becoming a full time novelist.

Goodreads | Inkspell Publishing | Amazon

Excerpt:

A drone, as deep and low as the growl of a primordial beast, resonated in my gut and I yanked my hand away. My heart sped like someone had fired a starter gun to a race, and my chest tightened until I couldn't breathe.

That blaring blasphemy wasn't from my ship.

The sound tapered off, leaving me in silence. I stared at the bones, wondering if I'd imagined it, or if I should hide here in the ruins in case the sound came back.

What am I doing? I'm a team expedition leader, for crying out loud!

I pulled myself back together. Everyone else was attending the ceremony on the ship. The thick hull, designed to protect us from deep space, blocked all sounds from the outside world. I was the only one who would have heard it. The only one who could investigate. I thought about going back for help, but every second I delayed, the source of the sound could disappear. Besides, I didn't want the credit taken away from me. Not this time.

I scrambled to the window and climbed over the ledge, throwing myself down so fast my ankles exploded in pain. Cursing, I hobbled up the embankment of the excavation site. The sound boomed around me, vibrating the crystals underneath my feet. I fell to my knees and covered my ears. It reminded me of warping metal, growling monsters, and screeching alarms all at the same time.

The sound came from the jungle. I pulled myself up the incline and peered over the edge. A dry, fiery breeze blew my hair back, and I looked above the rustling canopy.

My heart stammered then beat into a frenzy. A massive ring of a ship, twice as large as the New Dawn, hovered over the jungle. Spires jutted from the top and the bottom, like a two-sided pin cushion. Blinking reddish lights adorned the ends. The hull was a dull gray shield of impenetrable metal with no sight panels or markings of any kind.

The buzzing sound made my eardrums throb. I pressed my nose up against the crystal ledge and peered over as my whole body shook. The lowest spire, thick as a nuclear reactor, lengthened from the belly of the ship until the tip hovered a meter from the jungle canopy. A trap door opened, and a beam of white light seared a hole in the foliage. The smell of burnt vines choked my throat, and I cowered against the side of the ledge.

I have to warn the ship.

My Review:

I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Nova Williams is a selfish person who wants everything and everyone for herself. She is jealous of Andromeda Barliss, Commander Barliss' great-granddaughter. When they first arrived on Paradise 21 Andromeda saved the lives of everyone on the ship by informing them of the poisonous pods on the planet. Ghost aliens told Andromeda about the pods and how they destroyed their race. Nova wanted to be the one to save the colony and make Lieutenant, but Andromeda got the position. Nova is so jealous that she leaves a wedding party and the ship. She can't stand to be around anyone no longer. She hates Andromeda and she can't stand the fact that her lifemate Sirius is always looking at Andromeda like a sick puppy dog. Nova only cares about herself but now she wants Sirius to look at her like that. To her Sirius is the best catch on the whole ship. Nova just wants to be the best to have the best. She has some Problem within herself that she needs to deal with. Some deep hurt, pain in heart who or what caused this she doesn't even know.

At first Nova did seem selfish wanting everything and everyone for herself. But she wasn't exactly being selfish she just wanted her life to be better. Her family had a hard time dealing with their problems. Nova was not going tell anyone about her problems so she just lashed out at everyone. But she was different with her family. When she was with them you could tell she really did care about others and not only herself. She just wanted what everyone else wanted a better life. I'm beginning to think that maybe Nova has a heart after all.

Yes, I knew Nova had a heart in there somewhere. She was afraid of letting anyone in, she thought if she let them in the only thing that would happen is she would be hurt. She was afraid that everyone would she stomp her heart until there was nothing left if she let them in, let anyone know who she really was. So she tried to make them think she didn't care about anyone but herself. When I first started reading Reconnaissance I didn't think I would like Nova she just seemed so selfish. But the more I read I realized that she was just afraid that she wouldn't be good enough, that no one would ever like her.

I loved reading Colonization, I loved Andromeda's story and she save their colony from the pods and I was very excited to have the chance to read Nova's story. Colonization was the first book that I read by Aubrie Dionne after reading I knew I had to read more of her work. I had to know more about Paradise 21 and all the other spaceships. I now have all of the New Dawn books and plan on reading all of them. I have read Paradise 21 and loved it too. If you have not read Aubrie's work then you are missing an adventure of a lifetime because she is a brilliant writer.

Her latest series of young-adult contemporary Jane Austen retellings was named a What's Hot pick (RT Book Reviews magazine) and is a Best of 2012 pick (Kirkus Reviews) where it was praised for being a "unique twist on a classic" and offering "a compelling mix of action, drama and love."

About the Author:

Author Why My Love Life Sucks photo SheviCloseUp.jpg

I've always been super geeky about comedy, fantasy and science fiction.

When I was little, I'd take them apart and analyze them, kind of like what Gilbert Garfinkle--the hero of Why My Love Life Sucks--does with electronics. This continued into my college years, when I majored in English Literature and Theater Studies.

For twelve years I worked in magazines and newspapers as an editorial cartoonist, illustrator, editor, arts-and-entertainment writer (specializing in children's entertainment and, of course, comedy), and a consumer columnist.

My last job was at the Jerusalem Post, but I had to quit when my family decided to move to New Jersey to pursue better education options for my autistic son.

This was in February 2001. Since then I've written 40 picture books and seven novels for kids and teens, four of which I've indie published. I was an ABNA quarterfinalist with Why My Love Life Sucks, and I won third place in SmartWriter's Write It Now contest in the the YA category (which was judged by Alex Flinn, the author of Beastly) for my romantic, YA ghost story, Ride of Your Life.

Review of Nessa: A Breeders Story By Katie French

Nessa: A Breeders Story

Nessa: A Breeders Story
By Katie French
Series: Breeders
Genre: Science Fiction, Dystopia
Number of Pages: 34
Published: February 1st 2013

Amazon

Book Description from Goodreads:

Eighteen-year-old Nessa knows what it’s like to be an endangered species. Grown up in a dying world where nine out of ten babies are born male, she survives by trusting no one. When Marlin, the nineteen-year-old gunslinger with the sky-blue eyes, kills the man who has been keeping her enslaved, Nessa decides this handsome stranger might be her meal ticket. What she doesn’t realize is love is still possible, even in their decimated world. When Nessa discovers she’s pregnant with Marlin’s child, her difficult life now teeters on a knife’s edge. Can she bear to bring a child into their shattered world? Better yet, can Marlin keep them safe from those that hunt Nessa?

A companion story to The Breeders, this prequel novelette (34 pages or 10,000 words) explores the origins of two important characters and gives a deeper look into their background. It contains minor spoilers to the novel and is intended for mature teens and adults.

My Review:

Nessa lives in a world where women are all but extinct and nine out ten babies born are male. Women who are of breeding age are taken away by the Breeders to a hospital to be used as a breeding machine. Women are worth a large amount of money. Some men if they find a woman will take her and sell her to the Breeders and some will hold them hostage for their own needs. Nessa doesn't know who to trust or if there is anyone she can trust. Big Mike kept Nessa tied up and treated her like a slave and used her for several months. Along came Marlin who rescued her from Big Mike she wasn't sure if she was any better off or not but at least she had better sleeping accommodations.

When Nessa became pregnant she hid it from Marlin she didn't know what he would do. She was afraid that he would leave her or maybe even be mad at her and hit her. How wrong she was, Marlin was very happy about the baby he would say "my boy". Nessa finally realized that what she was feeling for Marlin was love. She had gone and fell in love with him. She never thought that she would ever love anyone. She didn't think that there was a man left alive that was nice enough to love and she never thought she would love someone. No wonder she felt like this with all that she had endured through her life. Always having to hide and stay away from people knowing they would sell her.

I love reading about this world where women are almost an endangered species. I love the world that Katie French has created. I can't image living in a world where women didn't have to wear makeup or dress up to impress men or to get men to want them. A world where women ran away from and hide from men. I am still waiting for the next book in the Breeders series and can't wait to read it. I know that it will be as good as The Breeders and Nessa's story.
