CHAPTER ONE

BLACK SWAN FIELD TRAINING MANUAL Section I: Chapter 1, #1

The plural of vampire is vampire.

When the rush of activity subsided, he found himself alone with his own thoughts; a condition that was more than familiar since he had spent hundreds of years that way. Without the distraction of his friends' banter, since his proposed staff had left Edinburgh, he had begun to see his task not just as a job, but as a mission, one immersed in the duality of joy and gravity.

He had never considered himself to be impatient. Quite the contrary, everything he had ever pursued in earnest, from painting to music to writing, had depended upon patience. But, his cognizance of the enormity of the burden he had accepted had grown over the past months and he had turned to brooding about the time that was passing.

Every day that nothing was accomplished was a day when more people had their humanity taken from them, another day when vampire remained imprisoned in bodies infected with the foulest disease imaginable, and, also, another day when people died.

The project was moving painfully slowly. Everyone who had originally been assigned to work with Baka was gone: married, retired, whatever. Everyone except Heaven - who had turned out to be anything but.

The large work space, intended for several people, seemed deserted with him alone most of the time. He worked from early in the morning till late at night, challenging both the hours in the day and the fact that he was one excruciatingly short-handed task force leader.

When Heaven was present, her moods ran the range of a shallow bell curve from disagreeable to surly to sullen. He admitted that he had provoked her on their first meeting, for reasons that were a mystery to him. Something about her instantly put him on edge and made him feel anxious.

Even though that feeling persisted, he had attempted to make amends so that they could work together amicably. To no avail. She was prickly to the core, spurning every effort on his part to develop a rudimentary standard of civility. She behaved as if simple courtesy was more than she could manage which meant that "nice" was a goal way too distant.

He not only had to work with a person who detested his very presence, but, adding insult to injury, it seemed he couldn't shake an inexplicably strong attraction to her. He found himself staring at the curve of her cheek with her head bowed over work. Or the shine of her chestnut hair when she walked through a ray of light. Or the way her lips pursed whenever he gave her something to do. It was damned aggravating.

To make matters worse, he seemed to have lost interest in pursuing other women.

At exactly fifteen after five she double checked her wristwatch, closed an open folder, rose, pushed her arms into her sweater jacket, put her purse on her shoulder and, like every other day, walked out of the office without saying goodnight.

He perpetually struggled to concentrate because the space seemed to vibrate with a low level, but annoying irritation when she was there. It was stand to reason that he would be glad to see her gather her things and go, but, in fact, he hated it even more when she left. He heaved a big sigh. Fuck me.

Baka had been a person with a well-developed sense of morality, and a well-functioning conscience before he became a vampire. During the last hundred years of life as a vampire, having survived long enough to blessedly recover his understanding of right and wrong, he had voluntarily turned himself into The Order and served as "consultant" voluntarily consuming only artificial sustenance.

No. He had never been short on conscience. And that conscience was rubbing a hole in his brain telling him that it would be wrong to simply sit at a desk and plan a strategy on paper while, at the same time, doing nothing. So, keeping his own counsel, for better or worse, he determined that he would continue to work as a bureaucrat during the day, but would spend his nights - at least part of them - looking for others he might help back to the light.

He had worked with Monq at Jefferson Unit labs to develop a delivery solution. Taking a page from the methodology of the late Gautier Nibelung, they had decided that the safest and most effective approach would be dart gun. Each dart was outfitted with a tiny canister that would puncture on impact releasing a formula that was part stun and part cure. The proper dose of stun solution had been determined by tests on Baka himself. So he knew it worked. First hand. Obviously vampire must be incapacitated while the viral antidote works. As medicinal remedies go, it is fast working, but not instant. There is a delay of two to four hours between introduction to the system and complete reversal of the disease, depending upon the age and constitution of the individual.

His plan wasn't perfect. It depended on encountering one vampire at a time and extracting him, while paralyzed, without engaging other vampire. Tricky, but the alternative was waiting for a task force to be vetted, assembled, and trained. And waiting was the one thing he couldn't manage. Maybe it wasn't the smartest thing he'd ever done, but, hell, he'd had a long life.

To his advantage, he still had certain attributes that were extra human. Not like comic book heroes. More like human plus. No one knew if these benefits would fade away over time, but, for now, he was a little stronger, a little faster, and could see in the dark a little better than most people. All traits very useful for vampire hunting.

It just so happened that he found his assigned base of operations in prime territory that qualified as a vampire magnet on all counts. In Edinburgh's Old Town there was a large pedestrian population that came out at night and it was built on top of an underground system that was not utilized to any extent that would interfere with the needs of vampire. All this was literally in sight of his office - five minutes' walk away.

In a darkly poetic way, it was fitting that vampire would thrive in Edinburgh's underground city which consisted of a system of tunnels, caverns, and cells cut into the much softer sandstone under the rock that the above-ground Old Town is built upon. It's a place with grisly history where thousands of hapless poor lived in darkness, packed together without sanitation and with the vilest of criminals. Plague victims were not removed and buried or burned, but just sealed in their cells.

Modern day Ghost Tours offer a shallow excursion - shallow because individuals don't want to stay in the underground very long. Words like "creepy" are frequently used even by hard-core insensitives. That leaves miles of maze for a vampire haven.

Baka had been a vampire long enough to know all about how they think. He knew that the days of the Beltane festival would be a gorge fest for vampire. The Royal Mile, just over the heads of vampire living in the Underground, would be crowded with visitors to the city, visitors intent on celebration and revelry, danger being the last thing on their minds. It would be a blessing to vampire in the original sense of the word which was bloodletting; when, as a rite of passage, young pagans would stand in a pit under a grate where a bull was sacrificed and bathe in the blood that fell.

So Baka finished his day, went to dinner alone, and slowly savored every bite of his of actual food. Afterward, driven by a heartfelt desire to do some good in the world, he pulled on a pair of cargo pants and equipped the dozen pockets with two dart guns and as many canisters as he could carry without being slowed down. He descended the stairs to the main foyer wondering if, even partial redemption for a long life of misdeeds, is possible. The fact that he was not accountable for that infamous history should have given him some peace of absolution. But didn't. He said good evening to the doorman and headed out into the night.

INTERVIEW

Victoria Danann

The Avid Reader: What inspired you to write A Summoner's Tale?

Victoria Danann: This is actually the third installment in a serial saga. So you could say it was inspired by the first two books.

The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Victoria Danann: Eight-years-old or so.

The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Victoria Danann: I remember my dad laughing at me when I was three-years-old because every night he would ask what I wanted to hear and every night I said "Snow White".

The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Victoria Danann: Paranormal, Paranormal Romance.

The Avid Reader: What is your favorite book?

Victoria Danann: Memnock the Devil, by Anne Rice

The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Victoria Danann: Karen Marie Moning.

The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Victoria Danann: If I could take all my experience with me, I would go back to about age sixteen and give myself a do-over.

The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Victoria Danann: For me writing is as easy as breathing - so long as my outline is finished first.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Victoria Danann: German Shepherd girl, two-years-old.

The Avid Reader: What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Victoria Danann: Cheeseburgers with everything plus hickory sauce and jalapenos. Bean and cheese nachos with jalapenos. Anything chocolate.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Victoria Danann: Yes. Stay the hell away from "creative writing" classes. It can't be taught any more than someone can teach you to carry a tune. Either you can or you can't. If you can, do it. If you can't, move on to something else. It's a big world. I'm not saying this to be mean. I'm never going to play guitar like Carlos Santana. The last time I tried to play Black Magic Woman my left hand seized up in muscle cramps for weeks. If that's what happens to your brain when you try to write, keep looking until you find the thing you were born to do.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Though works of fiction are a departure for me, I have had this series simmering on the back burner of my mind for years, but time is at a premium. In addition to authoring and illustrating Seasons of the Witch and writing course work for Seasons in Avalon, I play Classic Rock music and manage Houston's premier variety and R&B band.

This series will include some of my education in the paranormal and fictionalized anecdotes from my journals during the years when I was a practicing "metaphysician", but most of the material is fantasy - of course.

MY REVIEW

Winter Eve

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Nevan Mathews’ fiancé died three years ago and since that time he has hidden himself in his work. He hasn't been home in five years so he lets his step-mother talk him into coming home on vacation. Nevan loves his step-mother and his step-brothers but has not been able to visit them since his father's death. On his way to visit his family Nevan has an accident and runs his car off the road. His car is damaged to the point where he can't drive it and is left stranded.

Danica Welsh is a shapeshifter who was in an accident several years ago that left burned and scared. Danica has lost all hope of ever finding someone to love her. She moves on the edge of the town of Ashwood Falls’ hiding away in her own little world. One night she goes out for a stroll after shifting into a leopard. With her mind far away in la-la land Danica runs across the road in front of a vehicle causing it to run off the road. Danica gets the guy to follow her home. What choice does she have it is her fault that he ran off the road and is now stranded. She can't leave him out there in the snow he would freeze to death.

Danica and Nevan are attracted to each other but can they put aside all the things that they have been through in their lives and learn to trust and love again? After seeing how much Danica and Nevan care for one another a member of Danica's pack, Jarred asked the pack's leader for Danica's hand in marriage. Danica doesn't want anything to do with him because he does not love her and nor does she love him. Will Danica have a choice in who she wants to spend the rest of her life with? Or will the pack leader make this choice for her? Can Nevan win Danica for his own?

Winter Eve is a short read but if you like shapeshifter stories then I think you would also like Winter Eve. Although it is a short story it is a good read. Winter Eve introduces you to the characters in the new series Ashwood Falls.

Deep Connections

Just as love appears, so does the darkness. With her heart reaching out for one man, Brenna finds herself the target of an unknown stalker. Who is he? What does he want? How far will he go for her? Death is an option. Brenna discovers more than she bargained for and learns that the stalker will kill for her. It all comes down to decisions, and no matter what she chooses it will demand sacrifice and someone's blood.

EXCERPT

Deep Connections

Brenna's eyes fluttered open to see a blur of trees flying by. Her head pounded and her stomach began to roll from the pain she felt and the fast-changing scenery. A careful look at her surroundings told her she was in some older model car. She inhaled deeply to calm herself, but confusion set in as her senses were assaulted by unfamiliar smells. Her eyes widened in fright as terrifying memories began to flood her mind. Turning slowly, afraid of what she might see, she gazed at the man behind the wheel of the speeding car. She shivered when she saw he was just as repulsive as she remembered. Who was he and what did he want with her?

Sensing her stare, a pair of dark, soulless eyes turned towards her. A smile appeared on his unkempt face. "Well, well, sleeping beauty awakes." Brenna's stomach rolled again as she felt his eyes slide hungrily over her body. She pushed up against the door in an effort to put as much distance between the two of them as she could, but he shook his head in disapproval. "No need to be dramatic." He turned his attention back to the road. "We both know you won't jump out."

INTERVIEW WITH

Rebecca Graf

The Avid Reader: What inspired you to write Deep Connections?

Rebecca Graf: It was all a dream. I had a dream on night that was just a simple romance. I wrote the guts of that. From there the muse took over. : I never expected this paranormal aspect to appear.

The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Rebecca Graf: From the time I was a teenager, I felt an urge to write but figured you had to be gifted and singled out as a child. As I began to meet authors, I found out that wasn't the case.

The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Rebecca Graf: I don't think there was a time that I didn't have a book in my hand. My mother bought books everywhere we went and kept a box handy for us to read. I think we went through them dozens of times.

The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Rebecca Graf: Mysteries, romance, suspense, fantasy, and adventure.

The Avid Reader: What is your favorite book?

Rebecca Graf: Tom Clancy's The Hunt for the Red October

The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Rebecca Graf: Tom Clancy. His work drew me out of my old genres of mystery and romance and opened up many others for me. I love spy novels.

The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Rebecca Graf: I would go to Elizabethan England. To meet those that made history and wrote literature would thrill me. Then I could know for sure who Shakespeare really was. I'd be famous.

The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Rebecca Graf: I try to write only when the muse calls. Then the writing is easy. It is only when I try to force my writing that it is very difficult. In fact, I'm in the middle of a spell where I cannot seem to write a single word. I want to write, but when I try it is hard. Instead, I'll edit.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Rebecca Graf: We have 2 cats and 2 dogs. We got the Ragdoll cats (brothers) for me from a friend who was going to give them to the Humane Society. They decided they wanted my son as their person. It is funny as they groom him while we are watching movies. He belongs to them. We have a small black lab, Bug, that is my daughter's. She is such a loving dog. Then there is my little one, Mocha, who is always there for me and protects me. She is half Silky Terrier and half Bichon Frise.

The Avid Reader: What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Rebecca Graf: Ice cream preferably Culver's Chocolate Éclair Custard.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Rebecca Graf: Ignore everyone yet listen to them all. To those that tell you that trying to be an author is foolish, ignore them. To those that tell you how to improve your writing, listen. You have to learn when to listen and when to tune people out. Follow your heart. Write because you have to. Write what pleases you.

MY REVIEW

Yesterday's Gone: Episode 1

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I received a copy of the book as a free download from Amazon.

Yesterday's Gone is what is called serialized novel. Have you read Stephen King's The Green Mile? When it first came out it was released in six different books over a period of time. It's also like the tv show The Walking Dead where you only get one episode a week. There are like 6 episodes in a season.

The story itself is like Stephen King's The Stand where people wake up to find that they are alone. Their families and friends have disappeared, gone and they have no clue as to where they are or what happened to them. And like the characters in The Stand they have this need to find other people. Each character leaves their homes in search of other people. They need to know if there are any other survivors and to make sure they are not the last person left on earth.

Where have all the people gone? Why did they disappear? Why were only a few left behind? Yesterday's Gone reminds me of a movie I saw a long time ago that is called "Where Have All the People Gone?" that starred Peter Graves in 1974. It was a very good movie. I really loved it and it has stayed with me all these years. I think Yesterday's Gone will be a great read as well. I do plan on reading the next episode of Yesterday's Gone.

I am really fascinated by Yesterday's Gone being a serialized novel as I do love The Walking Dead and Stephen King's The Green Mile and The Stand being one of my most favorite books and movies.

EXCERPT

Colonization

The pollen released in my fall was so thick it obscured my vision, and I coughed, trying to clear my lungs and decide if I should run. The humanoid figure glided closer as if it floated above the turf. It had two bumps above each shoulder. At first I thought it was a backpack, but then I wondered if the lumps were folded wings.

Was it an angel? Had I died in the jungle? Been poisoned by some unidentified species or pulled into the stomach of a man-eating flower I couldn't even name? Trillium something. My mind whirled as the being moved toward me and came into focus. It wasn't an angel at all.

It was an alien.

GUEST POST

How Colonization ties into the New Dawn Series:

I've just finished the longest and most involved series of my life thus far: a four book, new adult space opera series called The New Dawn series, published by Entangled Publishing. The last installment came out this fall, September 11th. In between writing books 1 and 2, I took a break and experimented with Colonization: Paradise Reclaimed, my first young adult space opera. This story is directly tied to characters from the book 1 in my New Dawn series. In fact, some of them, even though it's three hundred years later, are still living!

The main character of Colonization: Paradise Reclaimed is Andromeda Barliss, the great granddaughter of Astor Barliss, the BAD GUY from Paradise 21. You heard me right: her grandpapa is the BAD GUY from the previous book. When Colonization begins, he's had three hundred years to reflect on his life, and he isn't quite so bad anymore. You wouldn't believe what three hundred years of self-reflection can do to a person!

Astor Barliss is still one of the most complication characters I've ever written. He wants to help Andromeda, but he also doesn't want her to repeat his past mistakes. This book completes his character arc, at the same time starting a new arc in that of his great granddaughter.

You'll have to read both Paradise 21 and Colonization: Paradise Reclaimed to see the change in Astor Barliss and how it affects his choice with Andromeda.

MY REVIEW

Colonization

I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Andromeda (Annie) a seventeen year old who has spent her life aboard a ship called New Dawn in deep space. The New Dawn is heading to a new planet they have named Paradise 21 where everyone on board will begin their new lives. Annie unlike everyone else is not ready to reach the new planet and leave the New Dawn. She is not ready for change. She wants everything to stay the same.

With only one month left before New Dawn reaches Paradise 21, Annie and everyone else her age has to take a test to determined what their jobs will be when they reach the planet. Annie has been a slacker her whole life and is worried about the test and what her new life entails. The test is not the only thing she has to worry about. The computer will also pick her lifemate for her. Annie is worried that she is going to fail the test and will not be paired with her best friend Sirius.

Upon arriving on Paradise 21 Annie starts seeing alien ghost who are trying to warn her of the danger to her and her people. Paradise 21 is not the paradise they believe it to be. Annie and the New Dawn are not the first ones to step foot on the planet. Annie knows she can't tell anyone about the aliens because they will think she is crazy. She realizes she will have to grow up and figure out what is going on and save everyone on her own.

When her friend Sirius' ship crashes and no one knows where Sirius and his crew are. Annie knows where they are and knows that she is the only one who can help them. Annie thinks she will have to find them and save them by herself. But she is wrong, Corvus her lifemate risks everything like his job and his life to help Annie save her friends.

I have read books about people who live on a ship in space before but I have never read anything and I do mean anything quiet like Colonization before. I have not stopped thinking about it since I read the last page. Colonization was one of the most amazing books I have read in a long time. Now I want to read more books in this genre. I can not wait to read the next book in this series. I would really love to read the New Dawn series too to find out how it all came about.

    About the Author

Author photo dionne-authorphoto.jpg

Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation--favorite character was Data by far--and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.

Aubrie wrote in her junior high yearbook that she wanted to be "a concert flutist" when she grew up. She majored in flute performance at the University of New Hampshire on a full scholarship, then secured two teaching jobs at a University and a local community music school. While playing in orchestras and teaching, stories popped into her head, and she used them to make the music come alive for her flute students. Her students said they were so good, she had to write them down! Maybe they were right, who knows? Two careers seems to keep her busy. For now.

She is represented by Dawn Dowdle and writes sweet and adventurous fantasy, science fiction, and contemporary romance.

It’s not a good love story until something explodes.

Rysa Torres misses information. Loses concentration. Her attention problems randomize her life but she pushes forward anyway, doing the best she can—until monsters activate a part of her she didn’t know she had.

As visions of the future whip inside her head, Rysa realizes the truth: She’s a Fate. And she will set fire to the world.

MY REVIEW

GAMES OF FATE

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Rysa Torres has problems concentrating and focusing on the tasks at hand. She has ADD luckily she has her medication. But Rysa forges ahead with her life doing the best she knows how to stay in control.

When Rysa starts having vision she learns that she is a Fate and she is destin to set the world on fire. Her mother has hidden this knowledge from Rysa her whole life. Her mother is ripped from her life and Rysa has no knowledge of where she is. Then she meets Ladon and his friend Dragon whom she comes to care a lot for. Rysa believes she will set the world on fire and she doesn't won't to hurt the one she has fallen in love with. Will Rysa set the world on fire killing Ladon and Dragon? Can she control her destiny? Can she change her fate and save the ones she loves?

Ladon will do any and everything possible to save and protect Rysa and her mother. Even if it means that he would lose his life. The Bruners want Rysa but there is no way Ladon will let them have her. Ladon tries to tell Rysa he knows she would never hurt him or Dragon but Rysa having seen it in a vision is not sure. She believes that her vision will come true and there is no way to change them.

Games of Fate is the first book that I have read with an actual dragon in it and I loved it. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Games of Fate is one of those books you don't want to put down or want it to end. You want to keep reading more about Rysa, Ladon and Dragon. I loved Dragon how he was very aware of Rysa's feelings and how much he cared about her and his human Ladon very much. Dragon, like Ladon would do anything for Rysa.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Seal Of Destiny

Love conquers all… but can it stop the Apocalypse?

Mira Herald is having the worst life ever. Not only is she plagued by horrific nightmares starring the Devil himself, she's now the target of a power-hungry, rogue minion, freshly sprung from Hell and bent on her destruction. To complicate matters further, she's acquired a stalker. One who insists he's a divine warrior sent for her protection because she houses an ancient relic with the power to unleash Armageddon. Last time Mira checked, she wasn't insane. Still, all this celestial mayhem is enough to drive a girl crazy.

Kagan is a member of the Scion, an elite team of immortal warriors selected by Divinity to aid mankind and save the world. After a century alone, Kagan is summoned for a new mission. He's eager to begin. Eager until he's informed his mission consists of protecting a woman with no clue to the power she wields. Plus, his briefing fails to prepare him for his new target's cosmic-sized attitude problem. As Divinity's sworn servant, he's required to fulfill his duty. His oath, however, does not require him to be enthusiastic about his new assignment or warm-and-fuzzy toward his new compatriot. He plans a wham-bam rescue and a quick return to solitude.

The rogue minion attacks-with the backing of a mysterious organization-and all Hades erupts, putting a fast end to any whirlwind escapes. Accustomed to staunch independence, Mira's survival now requires full cooperation and an unwavering belief in Kagan. The battle-hardened warrior is also forced to chose: between duty and desire. Amidst the turmoil, Kagan and Mira's undeniable passion draws them closer to each other and down a path neither expected but both yearn for, more than they ever knew.

Will love save the day? The world's fate depends on the answer.

"Basta!" Kagan grabbed her by the arm and twisted slightly, not enough to hurt, but enough to let her know he meant business as he directed her to a corner booth. He ignored the half-full beverages and coats scattered on the seats and shoved Mira into the confined space. When the booth's original owners took issue with his hostile takeover, Kagan dispatched them with a lethal glare. He wasn't sure where the girl had gotten the idea his mind was damaged, but he was damn sure he didn't like it. He moved in behind her to block her escape.

"Oh, hell, no!" After several unsuccessful strikes to his muscled physique, Mira tried to slide out beneath the table. The angle proved too awkward. Defeated, she shoved as far away as she could into the corner and propped those killer boots on the seat in front of her in warning. "You better let me out of here, asshole, before I call the cops! I caught you stalking me, pervert!"

Kagan took a deep breath. He never lost his cool in battle, and he wasn't about to start now. "Pervert? You're of age, si?"

Mira glared. Kagan ticked through their earlier interactions, searching for a reason behind her intense hostility. His preternatural instincts sensed her intention before her hand reached his carotid. He blocked her quickly, locking her small hand within his and forcing it to the table beneath his own. Her pulse raced against his palm. He took another swig of beer then flashed his most endearing grin. "Let's start over." He released his bottle and extended his hand. "I'm Kagan."

She refused to acquiesce. Kagan spoke in quiet tones meant to calm, to reassure. "I know I'm a stranger, but we have things to discuss." He glanced around the crowded club, at the bodies packed tight. "We can't do it here, though-no privacy. My apartment is close. Why don't we go there and talk?"

Mira kicked him hard in the thigh.

"Merda!" Kagan grabbed his throbbing leg. "What's in those damn boots? Marble?"

"Let me out of here, jackass, before I sideline your baby-maker!" Mira struggled within the tight confines of the booth. As she squirmed, the spicy scent of her shampoo wafted, and he was overcome with the strangest urge to plunge his hands into the riotous mass of her hair, to feel it curl around his fingers. She tugged on the hand pinned beneath his, and his thumb traced over her thudding veins. His heart pounding along with hers. The odd tingle sped through his torso, and his mouth turned to cotton. Her gaze blazed up at him, a swirling mix of green and golden brown. He noted the dark smudges below and wondered what kept her from slumber.

Dolce Cristo! Kagan looked away, fought for control. This was getting way out of hand. He couldn't remember the last time he'd bedded a woman, but apparently it had been far too long.

MY REVIEW

Seal Of Destiny

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a free copy of the book for my honest opinion.

Mira Herald grew up in an orphanage and foster homes where life was not good to her at all. Someone was always physically and mentally abusing her. Mira ran away from that life at the age of sixteen with her best friend Zoe. She promised herself that no one would ever hurt her or anyone she cared about ever again. Mira kept that promise to herself too. Mira is not like a lot of heroines in most books where they are always saying "I can take care of myself I don't need no man to take care of me". Well Mira says it but the thing is she literally can kick ass with the best of them. She can do a roundhouse kick as well as or better than some men.

Kagan is a scion an immortal warrior sent to protect Mira from a power hungry minion from hell that is determined to destroy her. Kagan likes helping out humanity and fighting to save the world but when he finds out that his new mission is to babysit a woman well he is not too happy about that ordeal. He thinks I'm a warrior not a babysitter. Kagan is sent to protect Mira because she holds the power to start Armageddon the battle of the end of the world.

I just loved reading Seal of Destiny with a heroine like Mira who can fight and take care of herself and not always whining about this or that. Mira is one tough chic who knows how to handle herself. She knows how to look around and assess her situation and predict what her opponents next move may be.

Now I would like to share with you a quote from Seal of Destiny that I really liked.

Mira sprang into action, using his distraction to her advantage. She darted around him, hoping he’d reach out to grab her. He didn’t disappoint. Argus’s arms surrounded her in a bear hug, and her muscle memory kicked in. She bent over and grabbed the flesh of his inner thigh, twisting with brutal force. He grunted and tightened his grip. No success.

Mira switched to plan B, and pried at his hands locked around her waist, searching for a finger to jam. She stomped hard on his foot and Argus’s grip loosened. Swinging out to the side, Mira kept his hand in a tight lock and twisted his fingers, pulling him off balance. Her steel-toed boots slammed into his torso, his groin. Argus grunted and sank to the floor. She finished him off with a roundhouse kick to the head. “Take that, fucker!”

As I said before I really enjoyed reading Seal of Destiny and can't wait to read the next book in the series. I loved all the characters and can't wait to find out who holds the next seal. Will it be Zoe? Will Xander and Zoe become a couple in the next book?

GUEST POST

Your protaganist's Conflicts: Drama, Deterrents & Damned!

Definition of Conflict: The struggle within a plot between opposing forces.

I learned about conflict when I first entered college.

You see I always equate the dumb things I’ve done in life to learning experiences in my writing.

In college, I did a lot of dumb things.

I mean, I guess I was supposed to because I was away from my parents, on my own, hanging with wild and crazy people and loving every second of it.

So there, I got my “experience” in at that time, but I also learned about conflict.

In conflict, I learned during the midst of the worst, it’s really hard to see the silver lining and sometimes it feels like there’s no way out.

I felt like that a lot. All around me was drama, deterrents and situations so awful, one would just look at it and say, "Damn!"

So many conflicts, I really was blind to positivity, resolutions or a way out until I started writing seriously again.

That was after college.

In writing, I learned I could see things more clearly and see the end to the problems in my stories and in my life.

Writing saved me. Writing help me see.

I know that sounds strange, but it’s true.

On with the lesson.

In a writer's story as in life, the protagonist is usually going through several “conflicts” at the time.

No one ever goes through one problem at a time in REAL life, so you have to remember the list of conflicts your protagonist must go through.

Conflict can go :

1. against another person

2. against nature

3. against society

4. against machine

5. against God

6 against him/herself

In these general conflicts, various things can rage.

Like in the first Mistaken Identity book, Dana had a family conflict with her twin sister, the deception she was doing to her brother in law, and in the midst of the story she had a conflict with what society would deem as abnormal.

In the second book of the Mistaken series, Love 101, Cheyenne had a conflict with herself, with her job and and against society.

On a side note, I think I do a lot of stories where society will have a conflict with the decisions my protaganist will have to make. I think as a human being this makes life more interesting when you're not conforming to the rules or norms of what society has and living happy despite the conflict.

Now I usually don’t do more than three conflicts. I’ve seen where writers try to get all of them in to make the story longer, but I found with a great deal fo research length in a story takes care of itself.

Resolving Conflict.

Writers MUST resolve ALL conflicts protagonist has. Nothing gets a reader's goat when the all resolutions to the conflicts haven't been address.

I found the reader to be much happier when you do give resolution.

Writers, please do not end a story without doing so, or tell the reader it’s going to be in another book. If you’re an avid reader, as much as you are a writer, (which you should be) you ought to understand that can piss someone off.

(sorry for the language.)

Now in series, there are SOME exceptions to the rules, but that goes into a lot deeper explaination.

Oh-kay, that’s enough on the writing tip for the day.

I hope I've added something to help you understand conflicts whether you're a reader or a writer!
