Book Blitz: Sweet Liar (Candy #2) by Debra Doxer @DebraDoxer @YABoundToursPR #YABOUNDBOOKTOURS #Giveaway

Sweet Liar (Candy #2)
Release Date 10/20/15

Summary from Goodreads:

Sometimes lies are sweeter than the truth.

Beauty is alluring; it can disguise the ugliness beneath. But scarred beauty is even more potent to a girl who vowed never to let her heart be broken again. It was an easy vow for Candy to keep until she met Jonah, an arrogant boy with a face that would be too perfect if not for the scar that marred the skin beside his eye.

That imperfect boy earned her trust and won her heart, but the ties that bind people together are fragile, especially when lies are told. Trust is also fragile, and once broken, doesn't heal like a heart. Trust has to be earned again, and Jonah desperately wants Candy's trust back.

But Candy has more than Jonah to worry about. Her father is in trouble, and she intends to help him whether he likes it or not. People tell her he's a bad man, and that may be true, but he's not all bad. Deep down, she understands his brand of badness because she's so much like him.

When Candy finally learns the truth, she'll have to grow up fast, let go of old grievances, and realize that being vulnerable doesn't make her weak. In fact, opening herself up may be the very thing that makes her whole again.

Excerpt

I pulled on the bathroom door and walked out into the small hallway, straight into Jonah.

“Are you okay?” he asked, his voice laced with concern.

I closed my eyes, searching for calm. “I’m fine.”

“What happened back there?”

Sighing, I took a step away to get some distance from him. “My fingers got squeezed in the ball return machine. It was stupid.”

“Let me see.” He held his hand out, waiting for me to place mine in it. I hesitated a moment before laying my fingers over his palm.

“How did it happen?”

“I got distracted.” When I tried to lower my hand, Jonah wrapped his long fingers around my wrist and held on.

“By what?”

I couldn’t help glaring. Was he serious?

He just looked at me, waiting, like we hadn’t all seen Parker practically give him a lap dance out there.

“What was that?” I blurted.

“What was what?”

“Are you kidding me? Parker was trying to feed her boobs to you for lunch, and you didn’t seem to hate it.”

His brow creased. “Is that what distracted you?”

I rolled my eyes. “Yes, it was a little distracting. What are you doing? I thought you couldn’t stand her.”

Jonah smiled. “Are you jealous, Candy?”

I had just opened my mouth to deny it when his satisfied smile caused a light bulb to go off in my head. “Were you using her to make me jealous?”

His smug expression faded. “Maybe I was trying to get your attention. But I didn’t mean for you to hurt your hand.”

“All that,” I said, waving my arm in the direction of the alleys, “was to get my attention?”

“Just because you stopped caring about me doesn’t mean I stopped caring about you. I know it was juvenile, but I’m losing you and I don’t know what to do about it.”

My pulse quickened at his words, even though they made my heart feel heavy. When Jonah said he cared about me the first time, it made my breath catch. Hearing him say it now, my reaction wasn’t any different. It gave me butterflies and made my insides turn molten.

“I didn’t stop caring about you. I stopped trusting you.” I licked my lips that suddenly felt dry. “We should get back.”

The harsh set of his jaw told me he didn’t like what I’d said. His eyes stayed on mine as he moved closer, crowding me, making me step back until the wall stopped me.

“If you still care, we can get that trust back.”

Emotion was driving him. I could sense it simmering beneath his skin.

“I do care. But I can’t forget.”

“Maybe I can make you forget.”

He surprised me by pressing his body into mine, and I could feel his warm breath on my face. Threading his fingers into my hair, he cradled the side of my head in his palm. It felt so good that I leaned into his touch, and my eyes fluttered closed.

“Look at me, Candy,” he whispered.

When my gaze collided with his, I saw a storm brewing there. The next moment his lips were on mine.

I sucked in a harsh breath, instinctively pressing my hands against his chest. I didn’t let myself kiss him back, even though I wanted to. It wasn’t until his hands gently cupped my cheeks, urging me to move with him, that I finally gave in, unable to help myself.

Jonah groaned, pressing even harder into me. His lips were soft but insistent, and when his tongue slipped into my mouth, I brushed mine against it. The kiss deepened, and my head spun. I’d nearly forgotten how strongly I responded to Jonah, wanting to get closer no matter how close we were, like our bodies needed each other.

It would have been so easy to get lost in his kiss and let everything else disappear, but my thoughts wouldn’t let me. Despite how perfect this felt, it wasn’t perfect. All it would do was hurt me more, because despite what we felt for each other, one kiss changed nothing.

“Candy, please,” he murmured when I went still.

“I can’t,” I said breathlessly.

“Tell me why.”

“You know why.”

Jonah exhaled heavily and lowered his forehead to mine. We stood there, each of us breathless, the passion of our kiss lingering between us. He shook his head from side to side before he pushed off the wall and away from me.

Immediately I felt cold, not just by the loss of his heat, but also by the chilly look in his eyes. “I don’t like regrets,” he said. “I never wanted you to be one.”

"Does anyone actually like you when they meet you?" Grace challenged.

"I think I like you like this." Jason laughed. "Not like last weekend when the cat had your tongue."

"If only I could say the same."

"You like me. I'm sure of that."

"Yeah?" Her brow quirked. "What part of this exchange is leading you to this great understanding?"

"Because I walked over here staring right at your crotch." He looked her straight in the eyes. "And I think you not only knew … but you liked it. Being the exhibitionist that you are. Such nice red panties, Kiki. Are they wet?"

She closed her eyes and breathed in deep. It was all she could do to still the erotic shiver.

"Know what else I think?" Voice low, he didn't wait for her to answer. "I think you'd like to hike your skirt up and show yourself to me. Right here, right now. Wouldn't you?"

Review: Meritorium (Meritropolis Book 2) by Joel Ohman @JoelOhman

Meritorium
(Meritropolis Book 2)
Paperback
262 pages
Published: September 28th 2015

Publisher: CreateSpace

BLURB:

Charley has escaped from Meritropolis…

but in his quest to take down the System that has taken his brother from him, he must go through Meritorium, a city where gladiatorial games of life or death combat are waged between High Scores and Low Scores, man and beast.

Charley and Sandy must face man-eating plants, religious zealots, slave traders, and the ever present mutant animal combinations that roam a dystopian Coliseum presided over by Emperor Titus, the one man standing between Charley and the answers he seeks. Man is not an animal, but if they are to make it through Meritorium, will they even be able to tell the difference?

The lines between man and beast, friend and foe, will blur in Meritorium, the riveting sequel to the bestselling Meritropolis.

MY REVIEW:

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Charley, Sandy and Sven along with all their friends, some with high scores and some with low scores have finally escaped Meritropolis. After the fall of Meritropolis they all take off for the one person that is responsible for the scoring system. Charley wants revenge for the murder of his little brother Alec who was put outside the walls of Meritropolis to face all the different animal combinations. Alec had a low score so therefore he was put outside the walls.

Charley and his friends are all headed for the city of Meritorium where they were told that they could find the person who is created the scoring system. Charley thinks that killing this person is the only way to stop testing people and giving them scores. Charley thinks that everyone is the same and must be treated as such.

Charley and his friends have a long hard & miserable journey trying to reach the city of Meritorium. Charley and his friends are hunters and have hunted some strange animal combos but on their journey they get to see animal combos that they have never seen before not only do they run into more animals they run into some really strange plant life when they decide to take a short cut. There have always been questions to whether or not plants are actually a live but there is no question none what so ever about the plants they come in contact with.

When they are almost upon the city of Meritorium they run into a group of people that take them hostage and sell them to the highest bidder as slaves to the people of Meritorium to fight to the death in what they consider as games in the arena. The high and low scores fight more animal combos than they have ever seen.

I really liked all or at the least most of the characters in Meritorium, the characters were great people with great big ole’ hearts. They wanted to help each other and they wanted to stop all of the evil in the world. They had big holes in their hearts and they were trying to fill the holes by stopping the one person who put the holes there. But what they haven’t figured out yet is that the person who put them there can’t fix all their hurt that they are the only ones who can fix their hearts and make the hurt go away.

Meritorium is filled with so many twists and turns I didn’t want to put it down or for it to end. I wanted to keep reading to see what was waiting around the next corner. And what kind of animal combo I was going to be introduced to next. I thought they were all amazing.

I would have liked to have seen Charley and Sandy come clean and just admit to each other how they felt about the other. If they would just be honest with each other they would probably feel a whole lot better and would understand each other more. They are both so brave but yet they are cowards in some ways. They want to save so many people but they can’t even save their own selves. Until they can deal with what is going on in their own hearts and heads then they will never be able to help others.

If you like reading books that is filled with lots of blood, gore and violence which I do then you are going to love Meritorium but I would like to suggest that you read book one Meritropolis first though so that you will know who and what kind of people Charley, Sandy and all of their friends are and how they got to where they are in their lives and what made them the way they are.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Are your characters inspired by people you know in real life, or are they purely works of fiction?
Purely works of fiction. At least that is what I tell everyone… :)

Can you tells us about your characters and who/what inspired them?
I am a big believer in John Truby’s approach to building a “character web”, because this deepens the relationships between characters and helps to make each of the characters more complex. Absent building a good character web, it can be all too easy to fall into the not-very-true-to-real-life good-person/bad-person false dichotomy where your protagonist devolves into this I-can-do-no-wrong character and your antagonist is just pure evil. I was very much aiming to show the imperfections and brokenness in each of the characters. My thinking as a Christian influences this to some degree, given that the Bible teaches that we are all essentially the same; we are all sinners—only God is perfect.

What was the easiest part about writing Meritorium? The hardest?

This was my second book, so I would say that the entire process was much easier than it was for the first book. I have great editors who were able to offer constructive criticism, point me in the right direction, and really speed things up.

What all have you written so far?
Meritorium is my second book so the only other book out is book #1, Meritropolis!

What is the most surprising thing you learned while writing?
One of the most important things I learned is maybe not all that surprising, but definitely important—the value of an editor. I worked with 3 different editors while writing the Meritropolis series. Each of them provided extremely valuable feedback and advice that was instrumental at various stages of the book writing process. The book that is available for purchase now is a much better book than it would have been without the expertise of my editorial team.

Are you working on anything new?
My next project is book #3 in the Meritropolis series.

Do you have a preference for how you get your writing done (typewriter, longhand, computer, dictation, etc.)?
I love my MacBook Pro with Retina display!! That’s the only thing I write on (often with my feet kicked up)…

Any strange habits for when you write?
Nothing too strange. I always sit in a chair with my feet up, one pillow on each side of me to rest each elbow on, and one pillow on my lap to rest my laptop.

What are your thoughts on getting bad reviews?
Everyone has different tastes in what they like to read, so I don't let bad reviews bother me too much. No matter what your favorite book is, you can almost be guaranteed that it will have many bad reviews on Amazon from people who just didn't get out of it what you did—that's
fine. I do try to stay objective and see if there might be something I can learn from the criticism to become a better writer, if not, then I just move on and don't worry about it.

Why do you write? Is it for fun, or because you have something you need to say in your writing?
Some writers are loath to say their writing has a message, because maybe they think doing so diminishes their art (not true, in my opinion), but I think that everyone has a message in their writing, even if they aren't as consciously focused on it—and that's a good thing. My message is in the epigraph of Meritropolis: "Because everyone matters - Psalm 139"

Excerpt from The Demon’s Grave by E.M. MacCallum:

“Aidan,” I insisted in a whisper.

A few car lengths north of the Chevy a stereo crackled to life. An echoing voice sang followed by a choir of voices that doo de doo’ed in the background. The slow song sounded like something from the 1950's.

Read and I exchanged a curious glance as the echoing main voice mentioned a game.

Read pulled his hand from mine and we both wiped our slick palms on our jeans.

“What is it?” I asked Aidan. “What should we be looking for?”

He didn’t answer, his eyes kept wandering to the cars then down the street and to the motorbikes.

Read’s shoulders sagged, exasperated. He looked ready to say something when the roar of an engine smothered the music as well as my yelp. It stopped Read cold.

Aidan jumped and grabbed my arm as if I were the one to save him.

Craning my neck to see if there was a single vehicle taking up the roadway, I saw none. It had been so loud I couldn’t pinpoint the direction it came from.

The music began to take over the street once more, a new song erupting from the crackling speakers.

Between shallow breaths, Aidan said, “come on.”

Before Read or I could question him, Aidan stood up and started in long, purposeful strides, the kind that was harder to stop.

Read nudged me to move, or rather shoved me. Panicked, we hurried to Aidan. Looking to him, our pace quickened to keep up. Aidan stared straight ahead. His lean figure was rigid, but he hadn’t slowed.

Keeping close to the buildings, we passed the occupied car playing music. I could see three teenage boys inside. The muffled vintage music carried through the window.

I felt the scream choke in my throat as we passed. The passengers didn’t have eyes.

Their shapeless pale faces lacked not only the eyes but also mouths. The skin where lips should be had stretched horizontally, sealing any opening. The only portion of their faces that was noticeable was the lump of their nose—without nostrils. Even their hair was all the same color, styled the same, with a part in the middle, and they wore the same collared shirt and slacks.

I thought to myself, it’s just a few of the faceless, nameless people of this city, like any other...right? Maybe the demon had a sense of sick, very sick, humor.

I could hear, the eerie chorus of voices within the car, making it all the more surreal.

The three boys in the car watched us pass, as is if they could see. They turned their heads as we hurried along and I found myself staring back for as long as I could.

MY REVIEW:

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Josie is having the worst day of her life. Her boyfriend breaks up with her, she thinks she has a virus or something with the enormous migraine she has. She feels as if her head is about to explode. She finds out that her parents have been lying to her since the day she was born. Oh and by the way today is her birthday. Yeah Happy Birthday Josie! She is seventeen today the same age as her brother when he died. And if that is not enough for you guess what she has no idea where her Dad is. Yeah dear old dad is missing in action on her birthday. But that is nothing new he is MIA most of the time when his job. It keeps him on the road more than at home with the family that loves and needs him more than anything.

But as they say everything has to balance out. You for every action there is a reaction or something like that. Evil v/s good, Yin and Yang kind of thing. The one good thing that does happen to Josie on her bad birthday is that a new guy shows up at her school for his first day at her school and boy is his one good looking dude. Reid and his friend Santos ride up on their motorcycles and are very bada**.

But what Josie doesn’t know is that Reid and Santos have a lot of secrets they are hiding form her. But they will all come out when the time is right of course. She finds out that she is Oculi and that Reid is there to train, protect and keep her out of the hands of the people who want her dead. Oh yeah I forgot to mention that part earlier when I was telling you about how bad her birthday was. Opps!

Reid has given up his life and who he is to keep Josie safe and alive. He will protect her right up until he takes his very last breath if that is what it takes to keep her safe and out of the hands of the people who want her dead. The Oculi are not supposed to have any kind of feelings for each other but that doesn’t stop Reid or Josie when the sparks start flying. But who can stop what they are feeling in their heart even if they do thing that the one person that they have let in has done them wrong it doesn’t stop them from loving.

I am very glad that I finally decided to pick up Anomaly and read it. I wish that I had done so a lot sooner. I wanted so bad to read it when I first got it but I kept putting it off trying to keep up with all of my duties as a blogger and reviewer. I finally got a break so I said I’m going to do it this time and I am so glad that I listened to myself. I have never read anything like Anomaly before. It was filled with so much action that I didn’t want to put it down I wanted to keep on reading.

When I wasn’t reading it I sure was thinking about it and all of the characters wondering what they were doing and what was going to happen next. It really took me on a road that I never thought I would be going down. The ending really took me by surprise and I never saw it coming but I loved it and hated it but that is what makes a book good. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. I just know it will be amazing. I recommend Anomaly to all paranormal and fantasy fans or anyone looking for a good book to read.
