Review: The Path By H.K. Savage @HKSavage @GHBTours

The Path
By- H.K. Savage
Genre- Paranormal Romance

Magick is real. And there is a secret world complete with its own agency, Veritas, to control those who would wield their power over "regulars", or threaten the secrecy that keeps them all safe from the persecution that nearly destroyed them. For Cassie, a mixed blood witch, it's the only world she's ever known though she's never embraced her role as agent for Veritas. For Drew, a witch born to a non-magickal family, it answers so many of his questions. It is also the cause of so much loss and pain. And now, as he and Cassie attempt to find his missing brother, rumored to be working with a rogue witch and cult leader, it threatens to take the last of his family. Or will magick save it?

My Review:

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Cassie Porter is a witch in training well actually she is an investigator in training for the Veritas agency. She has two partners who have taken her under their wings to help train her how to use her powers without them getting away from her and she loses control of them. Cassie has tried so hard to learn how to control her powers and to make something of herself. She would very much like to make her family proud of her especially her father since her mother is no longer living. She will do whatever it takes to keep her job as an investigator and to help her family. That might not be as easy as she thinks with a heart like hers which is made of gold.

Cassie is on what just may be her last assignment for the agency if she doesn't learn how to use her magic without it getting out of control. So with this job she will go beyond the call of duty if that is what it takes to come out on top. But things are not a simple as she really wanted them to be. This guy Terry Pritchard is a witch also may have turned out to be a lot stronger than they anticipated. He takes and uses powers from other witches to make him stronger. He has plans to take over the whole world.

Cassie and her partners get a clue that he hangs out at this night club on occasion. This night club is owned and operated by two brothers who lost their parents when they were young. The oldest brother has for whatever reason gotten himself involved with this Pritchard dude. Most of the time his brother Drew has no idea where he is, what he is doing or when he will or if he will ever see him again. Drew will do anything for his brother Brandon even if It cost him his own life.

When Cassie goes to the club undercover looking for Pritchard or trying to find a clue as to his whereabouts. She meets up with Drew and boy do the sparks start flying. Only Cassie is not sure if what she is feeling is her or Drew after she finds out what Drew's magical powers are. Beside all that sometimes they have to cross the line to find the bad witches before they kill or ruin more people's lives.

Cassie is determined to save both of her partners Julia and Quad's life as well as Drew's life and Drew is determined to save his brother and Cassie both. So who will save who? Will they all make it out alive or will someone die while trying to save someone else? Who will live and who will die? Well I could tell you I guess but as I say "that is not my story to tell". That is H.K. Savage's story to tell. And if you pick up a copy of The Path today you will not be disappointed that is if you like witches and magic. Which are two of the things that I can't get enough of.

I hope this is not the last book in this series. I would very much love the opportunity to read more about Cassie, Drew, Brandon, Julia and Quad. I just know they have a lot more that they would just love to tell us about. I can't wait to read more of H.K. Savage's stories. I think I have found another favorite author to add to the top of my list.

Excerpt:

Charlie grinned at me as he was walking in and at least held the doors so I could get out. I jogged across the lot and back up to the bus. I could hear the shouting within three feet of the door.
“You’re not my fucking boss,” a very angry Nicholas roared.
Rolling my eyes—this was the worst first day of tour I’ve ever had—I painted a smile on and climbed back onto the bus.
“I’ve got dinner guys, and turtle cheesecake blizzards.” I pretended to be surprised to see Nicholas out of his room. “Hey. Guy said you’d be okay with a bacon burger and a baked potato but I can go get something else if you’d like. There’s ice cream here too. And I’ve got this box of Joe and a bag full of coffee condiments if you prefer.”
“I could go for some ice cream,” Nicholas muttered and took the DQ carrier and wandered over to the kitchenette counter to dig for a spoon. “Cool, chocolate and caramel.”
Arc grinned at me—his back was to Nicholas—and took the coffee and condiments.
“Smells good, Stilts.” Max set the table.
“If you want coffee after dinner, I make a cup that rivals Starbucks.” I offered.
“Yeah?” Guy sat and began opening the bags I set down.
I wrung my hands and watched them unload the bags. Arc and Max sat devouring their meals in great gulping mouthfuls.
“Why aren’t you eating?” Nicholas asked and I jolted.
I turned to see him leaning against the counter and licking ice cream off a spoon. His eyes narrowed and focused on me. My stomach tightened and I quickly looked away. Why was watching the man eat such a sensual act?
“I will. Once I know everything is good and I don’t have to run back for anything. Did you want something specific? I can go get something else. I’m sorry, we were only guessing at your meal, I should have asked but you seemed put off so I thought—”
“You’re babbling, Songbird.” Nicholas tossed the empty ice cream cup and picked up a second one.
“You’re going to get sick if you eat all those without eating a meal first,” I chided lightly. Grabbing his plate from the table, I held it out.
“You going to feed me too?” He lifted a brow.
I didn’t sigh, but it was a close call. Why was he so much like my brother, Benjamin? I picked up the fork, dipped into the loaded potato, and held it out. “Do you want the airplane noise too?”
“Do you make good airplane noises?”
I sighed. “Yes or no, Walker.”
He studied me. “You’d do it. If I asked.”
“Walker.”
“No.” He leaned forward and took the potatoes off the fork. He chewed and swallowed. “These don’t taste like fast food.”
I held out another forkful. “As long as it’s good what’s it matter?”
“Touché.” He took the plate and began to feed himself.
Score. Me—one. Nicholas—zero.

Excerpt from Into the Myth by R.L. Weeks:

"So there is no actual proof. I mean, they say that's what happens, but it could be a fairy tale to prevent people from doing those rituals. Her lover could have been miserable because she died and he loved her." Everyone in the class is now staring at me, their mouths open a little. I raise an eyebrow to my perplexed professor. "Umm… I…" he splutters, looks at the picture of her then back to me. "You could be right." He presses his lips together and manages to produce a half-smile. "But it would be unwise for someone to try and prove those theories wrong." He pauses, everyone stares at him. I follow the bead of sweat trickling down the side of his head. "As there's a good chance they could be right."

"I would never attempt to do black magic. I was just making a point," I lie. He nods and turns his attention back to the class. He recites a script written by one of her lovers. I sit at the desk, a little amused. Although I feel a little happier knowing it hasn't actually been proven, his words still echo in my mind. They could be right, the theories. I spend the rest of the lesson admiring the picture of the woman who risked everything to bring back the one she loved. I wonder if there's a way to find out if she really did damn herself to an eternity of pain in the underworld. I doubt it. I wonder how many sorcerers have tried and failed to find out.

"Produce a six-page essay on her years between twenty and twenty-five. Most of her spells were created within this time. Bonus points to anyone who can find out what ritual she created, that later affected the King of England, Henry the Eighth," he hollers, bringing me out of my daydream.

What was that about Henry the Eighth? Never mind. The professor steps back and picks up several books, everyone gets up.

"That was awesome," a guy says from behind me. I turn and look up at a tall muscular man with pale brown eyes.

"Umm… thanks."

I smile nervously and go to walk out the door. I spot Miles just in front of me.

"Miles."

"What's your name?" The muscular guy interrupts me and Miles disappears out of view. I allow three girls to pass me, all of whom shoot Mr. Muscles a flirtatious smile. Then look at me with annoyance or envy, I can't tell.

"Lily," I say and look out the window. I can't see Miles anywhere.

"Pretty name. I'm Sean, Sean Pelletier," he says, extending his hand. I shake his hand and pull my fingers out of his tight grip.

"Nice to meet you. Wait, Pelletier, isn't that?"

"Yes, my ancestors founded the society," he says proudly. His surname is engraved on almost every wall in the building.

"Awesome."

"So, how are you finding it here?" he asks. He glides his hand through his raven black, shoulder-length hair. I follow him out onto the courtyard and spot Miles on one of the benches.

"Things are going great."

His face splits into a grin as he eyes up my bear necklace. "In good with some Berserkers?" How does he know?

"Anytime you want to climb on that pole again, Kai, I'm game." Joel grinned. Wiping that smile off his face seemed near impossible. He'd been teasing me about it since the moment I climbed on top of the bar and danced.

"You're never going to let me live it down, are you?" I actually didn't mind, not that I'd tell Joel. My cheeks burned remembering that night. Although I was just doing my job, I knew how turned on it made him. If it weren't for the fact we were in a bar on duty, I'd have given him a lap dance. Joel's tongue would have probably hung out of his mouth. Being an FBI Agent was tough work, most of the time. The few moments where I could have some fun and let loose, why shouldn't I?

Joel's lips trailed a soft path of kisses across my jaw. I curled beneath the sheets of his mattress. "Joel, we can't." Though I wanted to, I wasn't quite comfortable with it. The reason had nothing to do with him being my boss. We were over that. "Your kids are in the next room and the walls are thin."

"They're asleep."

I laughed. "Yeah, for now. You're loud. There is no way it won't wake them up. The neighbors at my place give me slack when I run into them getting the mail."

Joel whined and reached for my hip, pulling me against him. "Then why did you insist on sneaking over? You're such a tease."

"I am not!" I playfully shoved his chest. I tried my best to keep my voice down to a minimum. It's not that I didn't like his kids, I just thought it was too early for us to be doing weekends together. Which is why I opted to sneak over after they were in bed. I didn't think ahead to the fact that we'd have to keep our voices down and that Joel was a loud moaner during sex. Not that I was particularly quiet, but he had the tendency to make sure everyone could hear us.

"Want to play a game?" he asked. His thumb stroked my hip, inching my shirt as the pads of his fingers grazed bare skin.

"Like Monopoly?" I wasn't in the mood for board games.

Joel leaned his head forward, chuckling softly. He reached for me, brushing his lips against mine. I dragged my fingers into his dark, thick hair. "I had something more adult in mind."

"Oh?" My hands paused their ministrations, trying to image what Joel would have thought up. He struck me more as a strip poker kind of guy, but we were already half-naked. Where was the fun in that? Joel climbed out of bed and headed for his closet. I whimpered in protest. "Where are you going? I'm right here."

"I know a game that will be fun for both of us." He brought one of his work ties out from the closet.

"If you're planning on tying me to the bed, you know we have handcuffs for that."

"No need. Unless of course you're naughty. Close your eyes," he said, and I did so, feeling the tie cover my eyes as he secured it at the back of my head. I was blindfolded. This was new for us.

My heart skipped a beat. I trusted Joel, but it still made me nervous. "What do you plan on doing?" I asked.

"Kai, you complained that I'm loud when we have sex. I'm going to make sure that you're the one making all the noises. Better keep your voice down, I'm not sure I locked the bedroom door."

Hot-Blooded Lust Teaser

Six Questions with the Author

What are you currently working on?

I just finished writing the first book in the series Dystopian Reign. The first book is titled, The Victorian Shift. I started the second book late this afternoon and it's titled The Western Movement. It's an interesting blend of historical mixed with dystopian (and of course romance) that follows a twenty-five year old young woman that escapes prison when the facility is under attack.

Tell us a little about your release, Hot-Blooded Lust.

Hot-Blooded Lust is the third installment in the Federal Agent Chronicles. Just like the first book in the series, Hot-Blooded Lust follows the life of Agent Kaitlyn Rivers as they investigate the murder of a fortune-teller, who happens to also be someone Joel knows.

Any more Federal Agent Chronicle stories in the works?

Yes, Fire Licked is scheduled for release in November from Blushing Books. That novel is about a sexy fireman and follows FBI Agent Leslie Hunter.

How do you write so fast?

Good question! I'm very prolific and also task-focused. This is my full-time job, so I treat it as such, spending at least eight hours a day in front of the computer writing (or at least attempting to). I concentrate heavily on meeting a word count daily when I write.

You always have fun swag. What's your favorite piece that you've made?

I love making mini book charms as necklaces and also book boxes that feature my book cover. The book boxes are great for storing goodies when I have a book event. The necklaces (and also bracelets) tend to be a huge hit at events. Everyone always loves them and they're all handmade. I'm always sharing pictures of the goodies on Facebook.

Do you plan on writing any more YA books under your other name, Ruth Silver?

Yes. I recently finished the prequel to Aberrant. It is titled, Cabal. I'm waiting to find out the release date for that young adult novella. I also am (still) working on the sequel to Elfinland (Orenda Book 2). It's half-written at 21k words. I just need to sit down and finish that novel as well.

Excerpt

"Hey sexy." I hear Kaitlyn's voice and my eyes widen glancing up, as the dancers are once again on the bar.

"Kai?" I can't stop myself from calling her by name. I've always seen the dark-haired agent in a pants suit, one rare occasion a skirt. This is something else entirely.

Kevin removes his drink from the bar. "You know the dancer?"

Kaitlyn is up there wearing nothing more than a red g-string bikini. Her brunette locks cascade down her back and her makeup looks like a hooker must have put it on her. She's got thick turquoise eyeliner and lime green glittery eye shadow.

"Long story. We used to work together." It's not a lie but in the way Kevin's mind is ticking, he must think I had been an exotic dancer. Not the case! Though, what harm could come from him believing it to be true? It is safer for everyone, than Kevin knowing I'm working undercover.

Kevin laughs and his cheeks redden. I'm guessing it's the beer. He's looking over Kaitlyn a little too intimately and long for my pleasure.

"Quite a story, I bet," Kevin says. "Maybe you can share it on our second date?"
