Book Blitz: Uncovering Cobbogoth By Hannah L. Clark @hannieclark @NereydaG1003 #YABOUNDBOOKTOURS #Giveaway

Uncovering Cobbogoth (Cobbogoth #1)
Release Date: 05/13/14

Summary from Goodreads:
Norah Lukens needs to uncover the truth about the fabled lost city of Cobbogoth. After her archaeologist uncle's murder, Norah is asked to translate his old research journal for evidence and discovers that his murder was a cover-up for something far more sinister.

When she turns to neighbor and only friend James Riley for help, she realizes that not only is their bitter-sweet past haunting her every step, but James is keeping dangerous secrets. Can Norah discover what they are before its too late to share her own.

Excerpt:
James hadn't always had the power to break my heart. In the beginning, things had been simpler between us-we were only friends, and having never had a friend before, I was perfectly content just being there for him during Gram's illness.

But one day, out of the blue, it all changed.

James had asked me to stay with Gram one night toward the end of July. Uncle Jack was on a dig, and James had a shift at the fire station. I was supposed to stay up with her through the night, but around midnight she was sleeping peacefully. I'd decided to lie down for a few minutes in the guest room. I even left the door open so I could hear her if she needed anything, but it turned out that I was more tired than I'd realized.

The light of the morning woke me up. I jolted forward, horrified. The door to the bedroom was closed. Why was the door closed? Had Gram needed me in the night? Or worse, had she passed away with no one there to send her off?

With no other thought than getting to Gram, I ran to the door and flung it open. I had to make sure she was still breathing.

When I stepped out into the hall, I didn't see the long, knobby bundle sprawled across the threshold.

"What the-?" I tripped, heading for a face-first tumble down the stairs, when hands reached up out of nowhere and caught me by the waist. Before I knew it, I was pulled back into cradling arms.

"Let go!" I struggled to get away.

"Morning to you too, sunshine." The hall light burst down on me, and I squinted up into a familiar face.

"James?" I panted. "What are you doing here?"

Lowering his arm from the light switch, he shifted in his sleeping bag, stifled a yawn, and grinned at me sleepily. "Well, right now I'm cuddling a gorgeous girl on my lap. Aren't you gonna thank me for that extremely chivalrous catch?" He rested his chin on my shoulder and playfully batted thick brown eyelashes at me.

I flushed, feeling the panic drain away only to be replaced by something equally unsettling. Knowing it was somehow connected to the way James was holding me close, I struggled to get to my feet again.

"Whoa there! Where ya going?" James groaned. "I was just getting' comfy." He tightened his hold on me, and I was forced to stop wriggling.

"I-well, I just-I need to check on Gram." James's breath was tickling my neck. I swallowed a mass of butterflies threatening to burst from my stomach. What was happening to me?

"I-I'm so sorry, James." I managed to scrape my thoughts together. "I totally fell asleep, and I didn't hear anything in the night. And then-" I shook my head. "Wait. Why are you home?" I finally asked. "I thought you didn't get off until ten or so."

"It's eleven." James pushed his chocolate-brown curls out of his eyes and reached for his baseball cap, which was resting on a nearby chair. "But don't worry about it. They let me off early 'cause it was a slow night." He shrugged. "When I got home, you and Gram were both sleeping, so rather than take you home, I thought I'd just wait 'til morning. I stayed out here in case she woke up."

"Oh." His gaze was making me jittery. I glanced down at my hands. "Did she need anything?"

James leaned his head against the wall, watching me with a dreamy sort of half smile. "She slept through the night-first time in weeks. I think you've got a magic touch."

I smiled, a strange warmth spreading through my chest.

"So how'd you sleep?" he asked, returning his arm around me as if it belonged there. Then he reached up and pushed a wispy strand of silver-blonde hair off my face.

My heart went berserk. The confusion mixed with pleasure coursing through me was powerful to the point of painful. "I slept good. Pretty deeply too apparently."

James didn't seem to hear; he was busy twisting my hair around his finger. "You know, I don't think I've ever seen your hair down like this. It's usually in that tight braid," he mumbled, not meeting my eyes. "Jack's right. It really does look like vanilla ice cream."

My throat constricted as I swallowed hard. "Um . . . thanks?"

He grinned and again pushed my hair back from my face. This time, however, he let his palm linger against my cheek, then trail down my neck. It came to rest on my shoulder.

James looked at me with his blue eyes. They were deeper somehow.

And then all of a sudden, the recognition of my feelings floored me. I liked James! He was more than just a friend!

I'd wanted to look away, but I couldn't. I was trapped in his gaze. I was no match for this new side of James. Up to this point he'd been all friendliness and easygoing comic relief.

"Nor," he whispered, his own rapid breathing making his voice sound a little strained.

"Hmm?"

"There's something I need to-"

"Jimmy?" Gram's weak voice trailed down the hall. "You're home early?"

He hesitated a moment, his eyes not budging from mine. Then he sighed. "Yeah, Gram. I'll be there in a sec."

The moment was gone, and James helped me to my feet. He didn't say anything more. I was okay with that; I convinced myself that whatever it was wasn't important. Then I let him lead me down the hall toward Gram's room. My skin tingled with a strange heat when he placed his hand at the small of my back.

"What are you involved in, James?" I whispered, looking around the Rileys' guest room and wishing with all my heart that I could have the old James-my James-back.

Black Cats and Ballet Slippers - Week Blitz
By Iva Valentino
Middle Grade Humor
Date Published: March 7, 2014

Gemma Mayfield feels like middle school is a lot to bite off and chew. School, ballet classes, and planning on how to get Trevor Davis to ask her to the Halloween Dance are a tough balancing act. On top of that, Gemma is convinced that her science teacher, Ms. Pruett, is a witch.

When things start getting fishy at school, Gemma knows that Ms. Pruett is behind it all! Students are getting spells placed on them and start to go missing. Gemma and her best friend, Izzie, vow to stop Ms. Pruett from doing any more damage. Will they be able to save Middleton Middle School from witchcraft?

EXCERPT

Okay, so something REALLY strange is going on. Boys are from a different planet, but right now a few of them at Middleton are acting like they're from a different universe. (Wait. Does this make sense? Is there more than one universe? Ugh. Maybe I should have paid more attention last year in Astronomy.)

So, by the time I got to Ms. Pruett's class, I had already worked myself into a super version of "I Don't Wanna Go To Class Because I'm Creeped Out!" mode. I walked into the Science Laboratory, and I swear I felt the cold of Building 400 smack me right in the face. I'm not kidding.

Of course Ms. Pruett was at the door, acting like her sweet old lady self (ha ha, I know better), and was welcoming all the kids into the classroom. I just kept my head down and muttered a hello as I passed. Staying below the radar was the goal. Then I sat down at my lab table and shivered a bit.

Joey sat down at the table just a second later. Normally he is really loud and obnoxious, cracking jokes, and calling to the other Soccer Jocks across the room. Today he was quiet.

"Hey," I said, trying to be friendly. I thought maybe we could commiserate on us both having spells cast on us. Joey responded with a "hey" but didn't say much else. Hello? Was this the Joey I knew?

"So, Joey, are you feeling okay?" I asked. "You know, after yesterday…"

Joey didn't say anything, but began writing on a piece of paper. He folded up the piece of paper and passed it to me. I gave him a questioning look. He gave me a weird look back that I couldn't decipher. The note was as follows:

     Hey Gemma,

Sorry I gave you a hard time yesterday about the "Cute Boy" list. It was kind of rude of me.

     Joey

That's when it hit me that Joey hadn't recovered from Ms. Pruett's spell. For me it was just temporary, like a few minutes. But Joey was acting weird. It had to be the spell.

"Um, thanks," I said. "Don't worry about it." I then started taking out all my school stuff so that I could look busy and not have any more awkward moments with Joey until he felt better. He was taking longer to recuperate.

After class I headed straight down toward the lunchroom. On the way there, I saw Trevor going in the opposite direction past me. Our conversation went like this:

Me: "Hi Trevor!" (with a big smile and enthusiasm)

Trevor: "Oh, hi Gemma." (with zombie-like attitude)

Me: "Okay, have a good lunch!"

            Trevor: "Okay, thanks. Bye."

I wondered where he was going, in the opposite direction from the lunch room when it was lunchtime. It took me another couple of moments to realize that the ONLY classroom in that part of campus was Ms. Pruett's room. He was headed back toward Building 400!

Yikes! I turned myself around in mid-stride and turned back the way I came. I knew there was no way possible that Trevor would be going to Ms. Pruett's. Why would anyone in their right mind be going there by themselves?

I didn't want Trevor to think I was stalking him, because of course I would never do that. But just in case that's what it appeared to be, I used as much stealth as possible. I walked in the shadows and stopped to peek out behind bushes and building walls. I saw him up ahead…just before he ENTERED MS. PRUETT'S CLASSROOM.

My mouth fell open, and I just sort of stared at the door for a while.

Weird things are going on here at Middleton. And I think Ms. Pruett's behind it all!

THE WITCH AND THE WEREWOLF BY ZERLINA VALINSKI

 photo The_Witch_and_the_Werewolf1600x2400.jpg

Genre: Paranormal Romance

After a harrowing night Tasia Redcape runs frightened to the core from her family's mansion, right into the arms of the handsome werewolf, Conall McKnight.

As Alpha wolf, Conall knew almost right away Tasia was special. His instinctive reaction to her was powerful. With the pressure from his pack to find a mate and settle down can he ignore the desire he feels for the woman who has come...or will he find himself at the mercy of the witch in red?

Excerpt:

Tasia froze, her heart racing. The whistle of the wind echoed in her head as she stared at the incredible sight before her.

A fierce wolf shifted in the darkness, eyes glowing. Flesh stretched over bones, twisting, turning, the joints cracking until a man stood before her.

She wanted to flee from him and the craziness of her situation, yet she remained fixed to the ground. He was mystical, magical…nothing could describe what she'd witnessed. "This whole night's a dream. No, a nightmare." She glanced up at him.

"It's no dream. I'm very real." His eyes glistened brighter as he took her hand. "Welcome to our mountain."

"It can't be real." She shook her head. "I was chased from the mansion by a vile spirit, and into the clutches of a shape shifting wolf pack and their leader. You." She pointed at him, her hand shaking. "Don't tell me this isn't a dream." A shiver raced up her spine as she recalled the encounter. "I know I'm gonna wake up."

"Tasia, you're not dreaming." He leaned down, warm lips brushing against her cheek. "I'm real."

"So you're Conall, the man I met at the diner? The sheriff?"

"Yes." He nodded just as the clouds moved, allowing silver moonlight to penetrate the leafy canopy and illuminate the area, making him look even more surreal. He stood proud, the contours of his perfect physique emphasized by the wash of moonlight.

Tasia could barely look at him without blushing. She'd seen many naked men in her life, but this one was magnificent. "Perhaps we should get you some clothes." She suddenly had a hot flash, and hoped that her hood hid her thorough approval.

Conall looked at her. "I can tell you're uncomfortable with my state of undress. I can shift back into my fur-covered self, if it would make you feel better?"

"No, that's okay." Out of the corner of her eye she admired how large he was all over. Even his flaccid penis was enormous.

"You'll have to tell me more about what sent you fleeing from the mansion in such panic. The entire forest heard you coming. You sounded like…"

"The hounds of hell were after me." She twisted her lips, making a silly face.

"I suppose it's an appropriate analogy for what we heard, then saw as you rushed toward us." He pushed a curl back from her face. "The hounds weren't after you, but the wolves were waiting on you." He chuckled. "Good thing we aren't from hell."

She looked directly into his eyes, surprised to see her reflection in his large, now dark, orbs. For some reason his gentle gestures made her want to cry. She stifled the urge. "Oh my." Tasia touched her mouth. "I hope Bella's okay. She slept through the whole thing. Unless she woke up when I left. " She glanced around. "Bella!" she called out. "I hope she didn't follow me out and get lost in this wilderness."

Conall touched her arm. "She's fine." He took her hand. "We'll find her. She's probably still in the house waiting for you. Dogs don't wander far from their masters."

"I hope you're right. I don't want to lose her. She's my best friend."

"Come on. My cabin isn't far from here. You'll have to tell me what Bella slept through when we get there. I'm very curious to know what sent you from the mansion."

"We're going to your cabin?"

"Yes. I'm taking you some place safe. I hear thunder again, and we'd best move or we'll be soaked."

"You hear thunder? I don't hear it."

"I have good hearing. Now come on, let's make haste before the storm gets to us."

They walked for what seemed like at least a half an hour.

Goodness, this can't be real. I can't be walking beside a naked man who was a wolf…that doesn't even sound real. She stopped. This is a figment of my overworked imagination. "None of this has really happened, right?"

"I can't tell you about what sent you flying from the mansion. But I know I'm real, I guess the wolf's out of the bag on that one." He smiled widely at his play on words. "I'll have to trust you with our secret. I think we can." His expression grew serious.

"Of course. No one would believe me anyway. I'm glad you haven't eaten me."

"I had a full dinner, remember? Was I on your mind so much you would dream of me?" He moved closer.

"Stop teasing me."

"All right." He tugged on her hand to move her along.

"I guess you were on my mind."

"Come on, the rain is coming. I can smell it. We're almost there." He led her around a wide tree trunk. About a hundred feet ahead sat a two-story log cabin in a clearing. His black pickup truck was parked out front, and floodlights lit the yard and paved driveway. Compared to the old Victorian mansion she had inherited, his home appeared very simplistic. "Let's run, we'll make it to the porch in time." Seconds after they stepped up on the porch, the rain arrived, pouring down.

"Wow," she panted, "it was hard keeping up with you, but we just made it."

"Yeah, timing's everything." He scooped up a pair of jeans which had been draped over the arm of a rocking chair.

Tasia looked away, taking in his comfortable cabin. Despite her efforts to appraise his home, she could not help but admire his powerful body. His cock was no longer flaccid, it stiffened up against his taut stomach. It struck her then: he knew she was appraising him. As soon as she noticed his awareness, Tasia strode to the edge of the porch to look out at the rain and forest instead.

"Do you want to go inside?" He asked from right behind her. His voice had a deep timbre, making her insides quake with nerves and desire. "Hey, I didn't mean to frighten you. I often move silently." He put a warm, comforting hand on her shoulder.

"It's okay." She shook her head.

He had all of his clothes on now. "Or would you like to sit out here for a few minutes? You can tell me what caused you to leave the Redcape mansion in such a hurry."

Tasia turned her attention to the rain instead of answering. Droplets pattered the leaves, creating a symphony of sound. The woods were beautiful, a truly magical place. She knew someday she would love it here. This place was her home, she could feel it in her bones, and she was going to have to fight the monster who threatened her happiness. The monster, her grandfather, had been a stranger to her in life, and she didn't need to know him dead either. Stay dead and stay away, you foul man. She inhaled deeply. The breeze relaxed her.

Conall stood next to her. He put his arm around her shoulder, pulling her against his warm body. "I'm sorry if I'm being too touchy. My people are affectionate when we like somebody."

"And when you don't like somebody?"

"Well." His eyes twinkled. "It depends. But, that's why I have big teeth." He grinned, showing his teeth. "And big claws." He held up one of his hands, and it transformed instantly into a clawed paw.

She gasped.

"It makes it easier to eat you with, my dear." He hugged her closer. "I'm kidding you, I hope you know."

Tasia looked up at him. "Should I be running for my life?" Their eyes met.

"No, I'll let you know if you need to. I'll even give you a head start."

"Thanks." She looked down at her hands, then laughed. "It seems as if I've known you for years, even though I only met you a couple hours ago. I feel as if I've lived a whole lifetime since then."

"It's been five hours, actually." He grinned. "And if you weren't a Redcape, I'd say it was odd you're not afraid of me. But, it's in your blood to accept things which aren't typical or easily explainable."

"The mansion isn't the Redcape mansion. From what I can tell, it's very much Rayford Flemings' home. And I'm having a crash course in what it is to be a Redcape woman. But why would that make me accept things better?"

"All magical beings accept these types of situations better, because you know innately within your soul what to believe." He touched his chest, just over his heart.

"I'm not magical." She shook her head.

"Really?" He raised his eyebrow. "Why don't you tell me what sent you running from Rayford's mansion?"

"When you left, I went to the room you said was prepared for me. There, my grandmother had left a note attached to this cape. She explained it was a gift, passed down through the family. I really like it." Tasia caressed the velvet.

"I do, too. You make it look beautiful. "He squeezed her close for a second.

"Thank you. I've never had such a lovely cloak. It's all fascinating to me. This red cape has been in my family for so long."

"I can understand. It must be hard to grow up not knowing who you are."

"Yes, it is. I was so excited to find out about this place, it was like a dream come true to know I was part of a family." She sniffed. "Anyway, I got into bed." She moved her cape to show him her satiny nightgown.

"I noticed you were dressed for bed when you ran through the forest." He grinned.

"Yes, I went to bed. Bella found a comfortable place on the floor and she was out. She didn't even wake when I called to her, or when everything else happened. It was odd."

"Interesting." He rubbed her back in a soothing motion.

"I fell asleep. Then I woke to the sound of the piano playing. When I sat up in bed, the candles all flamed to life. I thought I was dreaming." She shook her head. "And then I saw it. I saw it all. I felt it all. At least, what Rachel felt."

"What?"

"I saw Rachel and Hunter. Rayford killed them both in that room. He tore out Hunter's heart, then turned Rachel to ashes. Rayford look directly at me. He actually saw me. He told me to be gone from his house. He called me a whore, and said I'd lain with an animal, betraying him. He turned into more of monster, his face distorted into something hideous. I ran as fast as my feet could carry me." She leaned her head against his chest. For several minutes, they stood there listening to the sounds of nature.

"So, you saw history play out for you?"

"I guess. But, Rayford saw me. He talked right to me."

"I have no doubt. He was a warlock of great power. His anger allows him to haunt the place."

"Did you know he was haunting the place?"

"No." He shook his head. "Not really. Not like you describe. I've never encountered him, although, I've never spent the night there either. "

"Hunter was your brother?"

"Yes."

"He would have been a lot older than you, right?"

"Yes, he was older than me."

"I'm not going to let Rayford scare me away. But I don't want to stay there either. At least, not until I put him to rest somehow. I don't care if he was a warlock of great power. He told Rachel much of his power had come from the Redcape women. So, there must be a way I can send him back to hell." Her jaw was tight with fury. "Is there a place I can stay while I'm here working this all out?"

"Yes."

"Where?" She looked up at him.

"Here."

"With you?"

"You're here tonight. I have an extra room."

"Why are you helping me?"

"Do you want the truth?"

"Always."

"You're a beautiful woman. I like your company."

"Are there any strings attached to me staying here?"

"Strings? Like cooking or cleaning for me? Or maybe having sex with me? Hmm, sounds tempting." He watched her, then grinned.

Excerpt

Kavanagh

I'm going to commit murder. I can feel it in my bones, in my pulse, in each breath I take. I'm pretty sure O'Sullivan, Cal, and Aidan are on board with my plan. Kid went upstairs with Kellerman and twenty minutes later Taylor dropped his bomb. Kellerman got a fucking chick pregnant when he was in Seattle. I don't know specific dates on when he and Kid became a couple, but I know he was all over her shit and fully warned before he went back to Seattle in October. Yeah, I'm going to commit murder. We have to get Kid out of here before we beat his head in.

"Make sure Kid's not in the room for this shit," I say to whoever's listening. I get chin lifts in response. O'Sullivan has been cracking his knuckles and pumping his fists since we saw the first picture of Kellerman and that chick. She's cute…that's about all I can say about her. She's nothing compared to Kid. Kellerman must be a fucking idiot. The blood is rushing past my eardrums with such force I don't hear Kid and Kellerman come down the stairs. I'm barely aware of the Army vs. Navy game on the TV. The four of us turn to look at them as Kellerman starts to talk.

"I beyond fucked up today guys," Kellerman tries to grovel. "I feel like total shit about it and I can assure you, I'll never let anything go that far again. I love Kid more than I can even tell you guys and I know you all love her just as much. I meant what I told Kav all those weeks ago. If I hurt her I'd deliver myself to you all willingly. I'm here and I deserve whatever you wanna give me. I was wrong." I stand up and move toward Kellerman never looking at Kid. Kid keeps her fingers interlaced with his and I want to break everyone of his as they touch her. I won't do anything to him while she's here. I won't put her in the middle like those two pricks did earlier. I can feel Kid's eyes on me while the guys approach my back.

"Kid go to the office and talk to Taylor," I order without looking at her. Kellerman maintains eye contact with me, not in a confrontational way…he doesn't know what's coming.

"Kavy," Kid warns.

"Kid, we need Kellerman alone for a few minutes. You need to leave," O'Sullivan orders her from behind my back.

"Go ahead Kiddo. I'll be fine," Kellerman soothes her. I'm going to break that jaw he's working.

Kid turns to walk away, and I relax a little that she isn't putting up more of a fight. Too soon was I relieved, because she stops and turns back around.

"Guys, I know this is a man thing that I'm not a part of. But you all are my family…Kel included. He's my future now too guys. I'm no cake walk to be with, but he's fightin' for me like only you guys have. Think about that before you do anything stupid," she pleads before turning and walking away. She won't feel that way after she talks to Taylor. I hate that she'll be hurt, but she deserves to know.

Once she rounds the corner and I hear the office shut it takes everything I've got in me not to launch at this motherfucker.

"Pool house," I growl at him. He nods and moves toward the back door. I can't risk Kid hearing us so the pool house is the best place to get this done. Once Taylor dropped this shit storm at our feet he told us he'd explain things to Kid while we dealt with Kellerman. I don't know how long we have, but getting out of the house buys us more time.

We enter the pool house. Kellerman goes in first followed by me, the guys trailing. No one says a word. Kellerman stops in the middle of the room. His head is held high, but I can see he's apprehensive. I'd be scared fucking shitless facing us in a room.

"We're gonna kick the livin' shit outta you," I inform him in a growl resembling English. "Then you're gonna pack your shit, get on a plane, and crawl back to Seattle." His face is calm and collected with the first sentence, strained and confused at the last.

"What're you talkin' about back to Seattle?" Kellerman asks.

"You think we're gonna let you stick around and go back and forth? Kid deserves better than that and you fuckin' know it," Aidan seethes moving to my right. Aidan's a big motherfucker. I've never seen him as pissed as he is right now, scary isn't the right word.

"Back and forth?" Kellerman repeats.

"This is not Sesame Street motherfucker. You heard him," Cal jumps to his brother's side. Cal can go off the rails but it's rare. He's the calmest of our bunch, but he's hell on wheels when he gets going. O'Sullivan moves to my left and I can feel the fury oozing from every inch of him. He's a fighter through and through. I have no doubt that he can, and will, end Kellerman. Kid's the soft spot for all of us and we would all gladly sacrifice anything for her.

"I'm startin' to feel like I don't know what's goin' on," Kellerman says as he looks at all our raging expressions.

"He explained it," O'Sullivan says motioning to me. "Don't see the problem." He's so furious I'm surprised he can form words much less sentences.

"I get the ass beating. I put my hands on her and shouldn't have. I'm down for whatever you four got planned. I'm not fuckin' leavin' Kid though. I don't know what makes you think I would leave her, but I'm stayin'." Kellerman's confident as he talks. I have no doubt he'll take the beating, but he's not making Kid a stepmom or taking her away from us to Seattle that's for damn sure. She deserves the world not some slut's sloppy seconds.

"Fuck this shit," O'Sullivan roars and lunges at Kellerman. He lands a brutal right hook along Kellerman's jaw, snapping his head to the side. Kellerman stumbles but doesn't go down. O'Sullivan is a man possessed now that he's started. He grabs Kellerman's shirt to hold him in place as he repeatedly crushes his face. Kellerman doesn't fight back.

"Fight back you pussy!" O'Sullivan screams as he releases Kellerman's shirt only to connect a left cross splitting the skin below his eye. Stumbling back Kellerman falls to the floor. He's breathing hard as he stays down.

"Who's next?" Kellerman asks without a hint of snark. He's really going to let the four of us beat his ass. We'll kill him. He looks done after O'Sullivan; the three of us on top of it is too much. I have to be the voice of reason in the room as I see Aidan making his way toward him.

"He's had enough," I state firmly. Aidan snaps his head back to me with a look of shock on his face.

"You're lettin' him off that easy Kavanagh?" Aidan grumbles.

"He's gotta be able to walk through the airport."

"I'm not goin' to the airport," Kellerman mumbles spitting blood into his shirt. This sets me off.

I pick Kellerman up by the throat and pin him against the wall squeezing as I speak, "You will get your sorry ass on a plane. Today! She's had enough pain in this life, you motherfuckin' piece of shit." I squeeze harder the more I speak, because the more I speak the more infuriated I'm becoming. "If you think for a second I'm gonna let you take her from me, you're sadly mistaken. What she's learnin' today about you, you dickless fuck, is gonna wreck her. Get outta this fuckin' city today or we're comin' for you." I squeeze one more time before I let him drop. He slides down the wall gasping for air, coughing and choking.

"I'm not leavin' her," Kellerman gasps out. Aidan hurls forward and kicks him over and over and over in the torso.

"You fuckin' are!" Aidan screams as he lays his final blow. Kellerman falls to the side spitting out blood from what I'm guessing is some internal damage at this point. Maybe we are going to commit murder. This motherfucker seems intent on dying in our pool house.

"Not," Kellerman mumbles before he passes out.

"What the fuck?!" Cal bellows. "Is he insane? Why's he lettin' this go on?"

Aidan bends down and starts checking Kellerman's vitals. His doctor brain must have just kicked in gear. No pun intended (maybe a little pun intended).

"Guessin' his spleen is damaged maybe his liver too," Aidan explains without much concern in his voice while standing up. "We need to decide what we're doin' here."

"Wait for him to wake up. See where his head's at," I say. I can't put him over my shoulder and walk him out in front of Kid. He has to leave on his own. We all sit around the breakfast table and stare at Kellerman waiting for his pathetic ass to wake up.

Author Bio

Norma Jeanne Blackness Takes Over is Norma Jeanne's debut novel. What began as an homage to the home town of a homesick Midwestern girl, unfolded a story of love, danger, humor, and trust. She's currently working on her untitled sophomore effort. We can't wait to see what thrilling saga she leads us through next!

Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Norma Jeanne recently found herself relocating to the United Kingdom. Now living in Belfast, she took hold of the opportunity to kick the 9-5 job for a chance to become an author. The best part: working from her home office, she gets to spend more time with her cast of crazy characters (written and real).

In her free time Norma Jeanne is a voracious reader and consumes books as readily as meals. She is a people watcher by nature and uses her experiences in life, observed or otherwise, to build the worlds and characters that thrive in her books. A believer in the strength of the human spirit, Norma Jeanne writes the stories of people that persevere when all appears to be lost.

"I've never understood a year. A year was always a measurement of something bad for me. A year in my father's prison sentence, a year since my mom's death, a year left of school before I could get far, far away from here. Now, as I look down the end of my college career, with only a little more than a semester to go, a year seems like something magical. It has been a year since Lily chose me, since she sat with me on the old swing set and made a decision that I was worthy of her. And every minute of the entire year has been better than the last."

You already know their stories: Lily, the perfect princess, always living someone else's life. And Jack, the broken boy, who had stopped believing in hope. Somehow, though, they found each other and what was one night blossomed into a love story.

Now, a year later, Jack and Lily are dreaming of the future. Despite all of his promises to himself that he would never be indebted to anyone, Jack makes a new promise - this time to Lily - that he will be there for her forever. But when life unravels for them, he starts to pull away, and Lily worries he's out of reach for good.

When Jack does the unthinkable, Lily is left destroyed. Is it possible to have a happily ever after? Does love ever really save anyone?

EXCERPT

He's smiling. Not that smirk he gets when he's bitter but also pleased about something. It's not the smile that says that he knows happiness is temporary. When he lines up his Skee-ball shot, there is a smile on his face that is pure. Genuine. It's like taking a step back and seeing Jack in a photograph. One from years before his life went crazy. He is just a dorky kid playing Skee-ball and he's so happy when he nails the shot. He does an awkward little dance and it's the kind of thing about Jack that makes me love him. He's gorgeous and sexy and aggressive yet sweet. He's kind and considerate of me, both sexually and in general. But I don't love Jack for that. I love him because there is light in the world in the space he takes up. I know he doesn't see it, but he's inside himself. From the outside, all I see is the absolute electricity and fire that fills the air around him.
"That's how it's done," he tells me when he finishes his game, wrapping up his ridiculous stack of tickets. I'm so going to lose, but I don't care. He's happy. I just almost wish I were better at this, so we could stay here longer, so that Jack could be this part of himself for as long as he needs.
"I think you're perfect," I say.
"Because I'm good at Skee-ball? Shit, that's all it takes?"
I shake my head. "No, but you tell me all the time. I don't think I ever say it to you. I don't like the idea of perfection. It's too much of a standard to live up to, but I don't think you even understand. It's cheesy and probably cliché, but I just can't imagine how I could breathe without you. How did I exist before this?"
He looks down, uncomfortable because it is one thing to tell Jack he's hot or sexy; he can handle that and he gets arrogant and ridiculous when I tell him that. However, this part of him, this vulnerability, he buries it so deep that drawing attention to it makes him want to disappear. But I don't want that. I want him to embrace it, because it's beautiful.
"Don't look down," I say and I lift his face to look at me. His eyes explode with light, the way fireworks do on New Year's when the sky is like ink and then it's suddenly on fire. I lean in and kiss him, feeling his hands tighten on my arms and his lips opening against mine. He's scared. I can feel it in the way he kisses me today; he feels himself falling and he is trying to hold on and I need to figure out how to be steady enough to hold him. "Trust me," I plead. "Let me take some of what you're feeling. I can handle it, Jack."
He nods. "Another day. Today, I just want to stay here, to be here with you, where it's safe and comfortable and my entire world is this. Where strawberries and popcorn and Skee-ball and shitty plastic toys are the entirety of what exists." He pauses. "I promise, Lily. I will. Soon. But let me hide from it. Just for a little longer?"
"Okay, but don't hide from me, okay?" I ask.

About the Author

Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She's written works in various genres - romance, erotica, fantasy, horror. Genre isn't as important as telling a story about people and how their lives unfold. Sarah tends to focus on YA/NA characters but she's been known to shake it up. Most of her stories are about relationships - romantic, familial, friendly - because love and empathy are the foundation of life. It doesn't matter if the story is set in contemporary NY, historical Britain, or a fantasy world in the future - human beings are most interesting in the ways they interact with others. This is the principle behind all of Sarah's stories.

Sarah has spent most of her life in school, from her BA and MA in English and writing to teaching both at the high school and college level. She also loves studying art history and really anything because learning is fun.

When Sarah isn't writing, she tends to waste a lot of time checking Facebook for pictures of cats, shooting virtual zombies, and simply staring out the window.

The other titles in the Flowering series are Forget Me Not, Lily of the Valley, Blue Rose, and Star of Bethlehem. The final book, Ambrosia, will be out in June.

Sarah has also written Bitter Fruits, an urban fantasy romance, and Backward Compatible, a gamer geek romantic comedy.
