Chapter One

High above street level in Clerkenwell she climbed up to the balcony's railing and rested her naked foot on the ice cold metal. A brisk wind was coming in from the east, gusting across the balcony and raising goose bumps on the girl's pasty white skin. From inside the penthouse the four boys watched her climb.

"Go, girl," one of the boys - Finbar Clusky - called out. The other three laughed.

"Where's Erik?' another of them - Terry Butler - said. "Shouldn't he be here? This is for his benefit, isn't it? Hey, Alice. Don't jump…not yet. Your main audience isn't here yet."

The girl glanced back into the room. "I'm not going to jump, silly. I'm going to fly. I'm going to soar, above the clouds, to the heavens. There I will take my rightful place with the other goddesses."

"Is that what you are, Alice, a goddess?" Davy Coltrane said.

"I am Artemis; goddess of the moon, goddess of the hunt. And once I've taken my rightful place in the heavens, I will hunt you all down and make you kneel before me."

"Not Artemis, my love, but Hecate, the goddess of sorcery and magic."

All eyes turned to stare at the speaker: a man, older than all of them: handsome, with a chiseled Mediterranean face and piercing coal-black eyes. They all shrank back in their seats and cast their gaze to the floor. All except the girl who, from her perch on the balcony, looked at the man, her eyes clouded with confusion. "But, Erik, you're here. I thought you had gone away."

"I'm here, my love. I would never leave you."

"Erik, I can fly. I want to show you."

He smiled at her indulgently. "I know," he said. "I know you can fly. You can soar, as high as a bird, more graceful than an eagle. You don't have to prove it to me. One day we will fly together."

She looked uncertain. "Do you promise?"

"On my life." Erik Strasser bent low and whispered in Finbar Clusky's ear. "How much did you give her?"

            "The usual amount. Nothing excessive."

"But now she believes she's a bird," Strasser said.

"No, a goddess," Mikey Gibson said, trying to lighten an atmosphere that had suddenly turn to stone.

Strasser silenced him with a look and turned again to the girl. "Come in now, my darling. Come in and get warm. Your skin is turning blue."

Alice looked at him questioningly for a moment, then down at her naked body. She shrugged, stepped down from the balcony, and took a step inside the penthouse. Strasser reached forward and wrapped his arms around her shivering body. Gently he led her through to the bedroom and laid her down on the bed, covering her with a quilt, waited until her shivering had stopped, and then watched a tear trickle down her cheek.

"Erik, I want to go home," she said, in a voice so small that he had to lean forward to hear what she was saying.

"And so you will. Tomorrow you can go back and see your mother, just as we discussed."

            "Promise?"

"Of course. I give you my word." He reached out and stroked her forehead, smoothing her long blonde hair away from her brow.

"Thank you, Erik. You're so kind to me."

Her eyes fluttered shut and within a moment her breathing had deepened and she was asleep.

He stared down at her, a frown creasing his forehead, and then he stepped away from the bed and went back into the lounge.

"Who was responsible for that?" he demanded, his accent thickening as his anger increased.

"Just a bit of fun," Terry said.

"No harm in it." That from Davy Coltrane.

"And that's what you would have told the police once they'd scooped her body up off the pavement?"

"They didn't mean anything by it, Erik," Finbar said. "You're over-reacting."

Erik Strasser spun around to face him, his brow furrowed, his eyes blacker than ever.

Finbar grabbed his midriff and bent double as an icy hand gripped his intestines and started to twist. "Please," he gasped. "Don't."

"Don't blame Fin. It wasn't his fault," Davy said.

"Then whose fault was it? I left Finbar in charge"

"I was only having a laugh," Davy continued. "I didn't think the silly bitch would react so badly. I only gave her another shard. How was I to know she would go all goddess on us?"

Strasser turned on him. The skin of his brow had smoothed out, but the eyes burned just as deeply. "Get out," he said in little more than a whisper. "Get out of here and don't come back."

The boy stood up to his full height and thrust out his chin to show he wasn't going to be intimidated by Strasser. "Suit yourself. I'm going. This was a lousy gig anyway." He turned to Finbar, who was slowly straightening up, the color gradually returning to his face. "I don't go much on your choice of friends, Fin. Especially this wanker.'

Finbar gave a small, almost imperceptible shake of his head, but Davy, nostrils flaring in anger, ignored it. "I'm outa here," he said, stalked to the door and yanked it open, slamming it shut behind him.

"Indeed you are," Strasser said softly.

Minutes later Davy Coltrane was on the platform of Farringdon underground station, listening to the steady rumble of the approaching train.

The train's headlamps pierced the gloom as it appeared from around a bend in the track. As the train pulled into the station Davy took a step forward…and then another.

The train hit him before he could fall from the edge of the platform. It carried his body along for a few yards until it slipped down the cold metal and disappeared under the grinding wheels.

 Excerpt

Something inside of me that I'd nurtured for years refused to allow me to lie on the ground and tremble in fear. No matter what life threw at me, I wasn't one to cower from a challenge.
I pushed myself up onto my knees and then I stood up. The smell of fresh rain surrounded me as I struggled to hear any sounds. Slowly I turned to see the wolf watching me with its amber eyes.

Maiden Claimed by Ravyn Rayne
Series: Palace Secrets Book 2
Publisher: Blushing Books
Released: August 6, 2015

MaidenClaimedx500

It was supposed to be a simple trip to the market in Paris.

Nothing for Lady Hannah is ever simple.

One secret after another.

The lies are mounting up.

Lady Hannah has made a deal with the devil. Worse she's falling in love with him. There's no turning back.

A steamy medieval romance filled with spankings and erotic pleasures.

A Character Interview with Hannah

Do you ever feel jealous of the queen, your former mistress and friend?

She's still very much my friend. Sometimes late at night I'm jealous of the romance between Ella and Alexander, but I've come to accept my position at court. As for Ella being queen, that's a job I would never want.

How hard is it for you to keep a secret?

Lies mounting up will get you caught. The goal is to weave a tale of truths into the secret so that you remember every detail. There are times I wish I didn't have to keep secrets, but my life and those I love depend on it. I know how to keep my mouth shut. It's not easy but I'm careful.

You travel to Paris quite a bit. Do you like it there?

It's absolutely beautiful. There's a wealth of silk, jewels, and other fine goods at the market that I can't easily get elsewhere.

What about the men in Paris?

I avoid most of them as best I can. If I brought a gentleman back to the palace, Ella or Alexander would likely have my head.

Excerpt

Waiting outside the bathhouse, a gentleman, with honey-golden hair and eyes as green as the blades of grass on a summer's day, stops in front of me. He looks me over and smiles. His face is covered in scruff and dirt licks his skin. "I approve."

There's an arrogance surrounding this man, and I have the urge to silence him.

"You approve of what?" I ask and cross my arms defensively. My eyes narrow, unpleased.

"I approve of you joining me in the bathhouse. Though I admit you look pretty clean already. Guess I shouldn't be surprised." He reaches out to touch a strand of my blonde hair and I swat his fingers away and force his arm down to his side.

"You've lost your mind." My grip on his wrist is forceful, showing him who's boss.

"What do you think you're doing?" he asks, glancing down at my hand still holding his wrist.

Three Questions with the author, Ravyn Rayne

All your romance novels tend to be novella length, can you tell us why that is?

Sure! I find I prefer reading and writing shorter romance novels, especially when it comes to romantic erotica. I want my readers to enjoy the novel, the romance, and the sex without feeling boggled down by too many plot details that aren't necessary. (Have you ever read a book and thought, wow this scene was totally unnecessary?) If I want to write a subplot or have a specific direction I desire the story to go in, then I will continue the series in another book. Some of my favorite romantic erotica novels are 22k-30k words, which tend to be the length I'm writing. This also gives me the opportunity to write a lot and publish often. So readers will be able to pick up a new Ravyn Rayne title every month and sometimes two per month!

Is there going to be a third book in the Palace Secrets series?

Yes! Grave Misfortune has already been written. It's scheduled for release September 24th.

Where can readers find out information on your upcoming novels?

I have a page on my website Ravyn's Books, that exclusively details the books, blurb, release date (if available). It also includes information on the current books I'm working on. Sometimes there's changes to the page if a book hasn't been released yet (title, slight blurb change), but for the most part it's fairly accurate. It's also the most up to date place I keep information.

My Review

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

In Maiden Claimed we follow along with Lady Hannah; Queen Isabella’s Lady in waiting and King Alexander’s mistress. Hannah is sent to the market in Paris to buy a present for the Queen; her birthday is coming up soon. While she is there she witnesses a woman being abused and wants to help her. So Hannah takes her back to the palace with her so she can find her a husband and hopefully the woman can then move far away and will then be safe and live a happy life. She has to keep this woman a secret from the King and Queen or she could get in trouble.

The woman is in great need of a bath so before she takes her to the palace she pays for the woman to have a bath at the public bath house. While she is waiting for the woman a man comes up to her and starts a conversation with her and wants her to join him in the bath house. But Hannah puts him in his place real quick like. She lets him know that she is not that kind of person.

After Hannah returns to the palace with the woman guess who she runs into. Yep the guy from the bath house which she finds out is a Duke and his name is Lucas who is at the palace because he is looking for a bride. Lucas knows Hannah’s secret and she is afraid that he is going to tell the King and Queen what she is up too. She tries her best to play it all off by having to tell lies which she doesn’t like but she has learned that sometimes you don’t have a choice.

While Hannah is playing all nice with Lucas to keep him quiet she starts to have feelings for him and wonders if he is doing the same. But of course being the kind of person she is she doesn’t believe that there is no way someone like the Duke would ever care for her. But before she has the chance to find out the King lets Lucas know that Hannah is his mistress and that she is off limits and that he must look elsewhere for a bride.

Hannah is a very strong woman. Stronger than most women with all that she has been through and all of the things that she has had to do. All the secrets that she has and has to live with would make any woman strong. Well now let me rewind here with all the things that she lives with could actually break quite a few women.

I think I have already said this but some things can’t ever be said enough. I have read everything that Ravyn has written and I have truly loved each and every book. The more she writes the more I want to read. Ravyn has a style of writing that I don’t think I have ever come across before and I can’t get enough of it and I want more of it. I can’t wait for the third book in the series Grave Misfortune. I hope this is not the last book in the series. I hope Ravyn has plans for more books in the Palace Secrets series in the future.

Love comes in many forms and always at a price.

At twenty-three, Princess Isabella must settle down for the sake of her kingdom. Caught up in a secret affair with her lady-in-waiting, Hannah, the princess knows it can only last for so long.

When Prince Alexander arrives to court her, he confides that his father is on his death bed, and he will be crowned king soon. Isabella hastily agrees to the proposal, desiring to be queen, knowing little about her soon to be husband.

Murder, secrets, and lies combine with menage, spanking, and erotic encounters in this steamy medieval romance.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

*FREE during the KDP Select Tour, August 17 – 21*

EXCERPT:

“I want answers. In the hospital, I sensed something about you when we met… Your mother was Mary Scott. Correct? She died in that hospital room while you were there?”

“I didn’t do that. It wasn’t my fault,” she blurted out.

“Okaaay,” he proceeded cautiously. “Did you touch her before you left?”

She considered him, her mouth going dry. She had touched her. She’d given her that final kiss on the forehead.

“Yes,” she whispered.

Ruth couldn’t look at him as she began to realize what all of this might mean. Had her bizarre handicap really killed her father, and now her mother, too?

She was a killer.

“You’re not a killer,” he said, rolling his eyes.

“I thought you couldn’t read minds!” She sobbed, tears choking her throat closed.

It’s my fault. I AM a killer.

“You’re not,” he insisted. “I think you’re a reaper, like me.”

Her heart starting beating faster and her vision started to go blurry around the edges. The whole room sped down a black chute into darkness. She was going to pass out. She was going to pass out with a strange supernatural man in her house.

God help me.

"If something happens to me, promise you'll look after her."

Luck's driving so he only glances at me for a second. "Why you thinkin' like that, Dante?"

"Nothing. This whole fuckin' mess is making me realize I should make sure she's better taken care of.

He told her I sent him to pick her up because the club was on lockdown and he was takin' her to our safe house."

"Don't be so hard on yourself. You haven't been together that long. She's young. It's not a stretch that you wouldn't have shared everything with her."

"No. But he used that against her. Someone else could." I stare straight ahead. "I told her she can trust you. I'd send you. Explained we ain't got a safe house."

"Good."

"But beyond that. We all know the risks. You seem to understand…know her needs. So if something happens to me, I want you to make sure she's okay."

Luck doesn't seem to know what to say to that.

I think of how to explain it better. "I don't want someone like Romeo gettin' his hands on her."

"Yeah. I hear what you're saying. Of course. But can we not talk about something happening to you. It's bad luck."

I can't help laughing at that. "I ain't sayin' 'fuck my girlfriend,' bro. Just-"

"Yeah, I got it," he says with a snicker.

"I'd want you in my role too. But Romeo already knows that."

"Thanks."

Feelings time over, I relax into the seat and plan how I'm going to murder Hemi when I find his disloyal ass.

I want more answers from her, but I think she's done. She yawns and I pull her against me, reassuring her that she's okay. Hell, reassuring myself.
