Eye of the Storm

Summary_zps6616f72e

Commercial pilot Captain Grant Montgomery III lives for the rules; flight attendant Tess O'Brien loves to break them. Tess hates running into Captain Montgomery when she's working. On her best day, he's intimidating and kind of an ass. On her worst, he bore the brunt of the most embarrassing moment of her life.

So when she's forced to drive from Columbus to Cleveland with him in the middle of the worst snowstorm Ohio's seen in years, Tess can't imagine anything more terrible. The storm brewing between them might be even wilder than the record-breaking blizzard outside.

But as they drive further into the storm and further into danger, Tess discovers that so many of the assumptions she'd made about Grant are flawed, exaggerated and even just plain wrong. She was hoping the trip would finally confirm once and for all that he's a jerk, but instead, she finds herself increasingly fascinated--and attracted--to him.

BehindTheStory_zps5158b8d1

Ironically, I wrote this story when I was in Mexico on vacation in July. For a story that takes place mostly in the freezing cold of an Ohio blizzard, it definitely seems odd that I wrote it in the sweltering heat of Cancun. But whether we're talking about love and hate, or hot and cold, extreme situations tend to bring out either the best in people or the worst. Typically, they bring out the worst in me. I'm a bit of a control freak, so I'm not good with having my walls broken down without my permission.

I gave Tess my horrible habit of laughing and cracking stupid jokes during stressful situations. When I was much younger, maybe 13 or 14, my family and I were driving to my grandmother's house in Colorado. It was the height of summer, we were in the middle of nowhere in Utah, and our SUV broke down. To make matters worse, it was a Sunday and it was a fairly small town. Nothing was open.

My dad was angry and probably frightened and instead of keeping quiet and letting him work out the problem, I started laughing hysterically. It was definitely not the best reaction I could have had. I don't think my mother has ever moved that fast before or since as she dragged me away from the broken down car. That memory was the first thing I thought of when I had these two characters, so fundamentally different, who didn't understand anything about each other. By putting them in a stressful, potentially dangerous, situation, they were both forced to be honest to each other and about themselves.

Excerpt_zps3e081652

"Looks like they moved up the storm warnings another hour," Tess said. "At least two feet of snow this afternoon, with another two tonight."

Grant grimaced. She could see it clearly, even though his face was only in profile. "It's going to be a rough drive," he said, and she was suddenly so thankful she wasn't alone.

Growing up in Seattle had given her quite a bit of experience driving in the rain, but very little in the snow. If it had been up to Tess, she might not have ever made it to Cleveland. And because the last half an hour had been so different, so odd, she didn't even hesitate to say so.

"I'm glad I'm not trying to do it alone," she said. "I don't really know how to drive in the snow."

His mouth quirked again, and Tess wished, despite the obvious hazard to their safety, that he had glanced over at her again, because she was almost certain that had been even more of a smile, and she wished she'd seen it in its full, forward-facing glory. "The year I turned sixteen, Virginia had one of the worst snowstorms in a century. My father believed in not wasting a single learning opportunity, so he had me out on the freeway, when everyone else was terrified to drive down to the corner market."

"Sounds intense."

He shrugged restlessly, and flicked on the windshield wipers just as Tess realized the snow had begun to fall, flickering white specks against the gray sky.

"Like I said, he was a great believer in learning opportunities." Tess was beginning to understand just how different their upbringings had been. Her father, gregarious but fiercely protective of his only child, would never have dreamed of dragging her out in the middle of a snowstorm, learning opportunity or not. She'd grown up cozy and a tiny bit coddled, always certain of her father's love. From what she had heard of Grant's father, an Air Force colonel, love sounded more like a reward doled out in miserly quantities.

Maybe, Tess wondered, the difference explained Grant's extreme self-possession and cold reaction to Tess trying to break his ice with teasing humor. He'd probably never experienced teasing humor in his entire life, and Tess thought that was a real shame. A childhood should be full of laughter, laughter, and more laughter, as far as she was concerned. Not just learning opportunities.

"My father makes every Irish cliché real," she volunteered. "If he wasn't so funny and nice, it would almost be embarrassing."

Grant's eyes swung towards her face, almost as if they were magnetized and he couldn't help it. They were wide, and a little bit surprised, and Tess almost stopped, but she forged on because that was what they were doing, wasn't it? Sharing their childhoods and backgrounds? It was perhaps a little stupid, but maybe if they could understand how different of a place they were coming from, they could meet somewhere in the middle.

It was even stupider, but Tess desperately wanted to meet him there, maybe with his lips on hers. She'd never been so intrigued and turned on by a man than she was by Grant Montgomery, and that was a tiny bit alarming, but then the last hour had been so different from the first ten. If this was what he was really, truly like, then perhaps there wasn't a reason to freak out.

"He sounds like he's nice," Grant observed carefully.

"He is. And protective. He hates me being so far from home, and I do miss it sometimes, but most of the time I like being so independent." The snow was falling heavier now, and Tess scooted closer to the windshield and craned her neck up towards the sky, almost wishing that they could actually stop and she could taste the icy flakes on her tongue.

Excerpt from Book Two:

My heart skipped a beat. It was my birthday. And I had a boyfriend. A super-sexy almost super-hero like boyfriend. This birthday ruled.

One last look in the mirror and I bounded down the stairs, slowing when I reached the bottom so I could project some semblance of cool as I walked toward the common room.

I found Taren chatting with Callie.

"Wow," he said, his hazel eyes widening and his jaw on the verge of dropping.

I blushed furiously and looked down. I'd tried too hard.

"You look..." he walked over to me and took my hand.

"Maybe a little overdone for a picnic?" I said. I should offer to go change; this was ridiculous.

He smiled that semi-crooked smile of his and said, "Breathtaking."

He gave me the lightest of kisses.

"Well, I'll let you two get to your picnic," Callie said with a mischievous grin.

"What was that about?" I asked.

"She thinks you're going to approve of your birthday surprise," he said. Now he was grinning! "Well, don't keep me in suspense," I said. "What is it?"

I readied myself to react with great enthusiasm when he told me we were going for a walk before my mom got here and we all ate lunch in the cafeteria.

"Wait, what?" I was so busy mentally preparing I was sure I'd misheard him.

"A day pass," he said again. "Or, part of a day, anyway. Long enough to get lunch at your favorite Indian restaurant.

Now my jaw dropped. "No freaking way," I said.

"What can I say?" he said, putting a hand on my waist and pulling me closer. "I'm good."

"You are," I said, my grin nearly splitting my face. "You are so good."

I threw my arms around him and squeezed him tight. "That is so the best gift you could have gotten me."

Taren took my hand and led me out the front door. Before I was fully aware what was happening, we were walking down the path that led toward the parking area. My mind cycled through a litany of thoughts.

Are you crazy? It's all well and good to wish you could leave the Institute, but there are Dahrak demons out there.

But it's been months! And Indian food! And Taren went to so much trouble...

And Reds will go to a lot of trouble-

They'll be guards everywhere-

"You OK?" Taren said, interrupting my stream of thoughts.

"Yeah," I said, squeezing his hand. "Just excited. And maybe a little nervous. It's been awhile since I've been out in the real world."

"Trust me," he said, "up here is as real as it gets. Down there, all they're concerned with is Botox and carbs. Besides, I'm here. And as long as I'm here, nothing bad gets near you."

He put his arm around me and squeezed my shoulder, which pretty much settled things as far as I was concerned. I smiled and leaned into Taren as we made our way toward the edge of the Sanctuary. This was going to be my best birthday yet.

Return Of The Wolf (Eye Of The Storm #4) By Dianna Hardy
Published October 30th 2014 by Satin Smoke Press
Summary from Goodreads:
The fourth book in the dark paranormal fantasy series, Eye Of The Storm.
The full moon has been and gone, beginning a new phase of greater surety for the wolves of Surrey and the mated four who lead them. As Lydia and Lawrence heal old wounds, finding solace in each other, Ryan battles with his own past. He'd do anything to keep the pack he loves safe, but 'anything' might have consequences he never imagined.
Meanwhile, Selena's sole focus is in keeping herself intact as Gabriel relishes in breaking her. What will she have to become in order to survive?
And Sarah has some tough choices to make, all of which will test her beliefs and challenge her boundaries of what makes good, and what makes evil.

Excerpt:
“No. Don't say it's okay when it's not. I've been asking myself over the past two days what the hell he's doing here – why he broke his vow to stay away after all this time. I thought, at the very worst, it was 'cause he wanted me back at every full moon – that that would be his request for what The Order are providing, and I've been going insane trying to figure a way out of it.
“But now, I fear it's you. I don't know how he found out you were human – probably his Seers – but it's you. It's you he wants.”
“Well, he can't have me.”
“He can. He takes. He will take, Taylor – he can demand whatever he wants. It's the law, and do you know what the penalty is for breaking it? Death. We're backwards like that. We've got no law system – none – because our penalties have always been our biology. We don't deny our mates when we find them, because we can't; we don't betray our mates because of the pain it causes; wolves rarely upset pack members – small upsets, yes – but big ones? No. Because the consequences are huge: you either get chucked out – and none of us want to go rogue, not really – or you challenge each other to the death – something almost never done, because the death of a mated male will kill his female. We didn't need laws because our make-up never allowed us to go against the grain. Then this law gets added as some favour to The Order a couple of hundred years back, with no bloody plan in place for when things go wrong.” That knot of anxiety was back and growing. “If he asks for you to—”
“No, Ryan. It ends now, here. Nikolai's reign is over.”
“How? I can't see an end. He's always been there – the Alpha of The Order for as long as I can remember.”

My Review:
I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.
In Return of the Wolf book #4 of the Eye of the Storm series we get to know Ryan a little bit more. We get to find out where he came from. We find out who he was and what he went through as a child. We find out who his pack was and how he ended up with Lawrence and his pack. We learn all about Ryan's old pack leader who he is and what he did to Ryan and other males in their pack. Ryan has been holding on to his past and keeping it locked up inside of him all these years but now it is time to let it out. Ryan is kind of worried about what his mates will think of him when they find out. But what Ryan hasn't quite figured out yet is that his mates are some very amazing folks who love and care for him more than he knows.
In book #3 Selena wanted Taylor for her mate and she was determined to get him no matter what it would cost him or his mates. But when she tried to get him she screwed up and ended up mating with Gabriel. Gabriel thinks he is god's gift to women. He is a male chauvinist pig who thinks that women are beneath him that they are no more than floor mats for him to walk on. A part of me thinks that Selena got what she deserved after what she did to Taylor and Lydia but the other part of me thinks that no one deserves what she has to endure with Gabriel. But she is a strong person and will fight until the very end to get what she wants.
Lydia has a lot of different things of her own that she is having to deal with at the moment so when she hears Ryan's story she decides now is not the time to lay her problems on him. She knows she will have to tell him sooner or later and she will. But right now she is just thinking about Ryan and how he feels; which is a person with a very good heart in my book. I loved that she puts her mate's feelings before her own. But so do her mates.
I have truly enjoyed reading the Eye of the Storm books. I really don't know which one is my favorite. I loved the first one where Lydia, Ryan, Lawrence and Taylor all three mated. But I have really loved finding out more about Ryan the one who seems like the "Big Guy". I think I am kind of jealous of Lydia having three "hotties" for mates. She is one lucky girl!
I can't wait to read more about Lydia, Ryan, Lawrence, Taylor and also Selena and what she may put ole' Gabriel through. What kind of punishment will she come up with? What about Sarah and Amil will they end up together?
If you have not read the Eye of the Storm books then you are definitely missing out. Dianna knows how to take words and wrap them around your heart. She will have you crying one minute and laughing the next. Oh and once in a while she will have you cussing out some of the characters and wanting to beat the sh*t out of them. So if you have not read any of the Eye of the Storm series then you need to get to clicking and a reading because you are going to want to start with the first book Releasing the Wolf.

International bestselling author of
The Witching Pen series, and the Eye Of The Storm series.
"I write both full-length novels and short fiction. As a writer, I like my stories to move along at lightning speed without compromising character build-up, and I like some humour entwined in them too. My books are fast-paced, and I liken reading a good novella to watching a TV episode of a series - something's happening in every scene and there's always one hell of an ending!"
Dianna Hardy combines a titillating mix of contemporary and paranormal romance in to her writing, as well as urban and dark fantasy, to bring you stories that are action-packed, fast-paced and not short of heat, with the focus on both character development and the plot. She writes full-length novels and short fiction. She has also written poetry (first published in 1997) and esoteric books and articles. Nowadays, she chooses to concentrate on writing fiction.
In December 2012, Releasing The Wolf hit the Kindle Paranormal Fantasy charts in both the US and the UK, where it stayed for three months, enjoying a highest ranking of #20. Both books in the Eye Of The Storm series have enjoyed success in the top 100 of Fantasy charts on Kindle US, Kindle UK, and iTunes (Australia, top 40). The Witching Pen series, 'Til Death Do Us Part and A Silver Kiss (Vampire Poetry), have also hit the top 100 of iBooks charts (Fantasy, Romance and Horror) in ten different countries worldwide.
Although quite active online, Dianna prefers the quiet company of nature and animals to the hustle and bustle of people. She loves anything paranormal (she doesn't really consider it "para"), organic food, walking barefoot, the smell of the woods after rain, and summer days.

ANNA
The worst night of my life just got worse. Nobody explained why I've been dumped in this run down house, or who this hulk with the filthy mouth is. All I know is he wants me, he says I'm his, and I'm ignoring my instinct to run like hell.
When he pulls me into his embrace, I want to push closer to his warmth, his strength, his vicious tattoos.
Can I trust him? Can I trust myself? Or will obeying his wicked words confirm all my worst suspicions?
DAVID
So sweet, so pure, so confused...I almost feel bad about claiming her. Almost.
Too bad she's a Rossini, and I don't regret making her old man sign her over to me for one second. I was born a Strelkov, a killer and an outlaw, and I second guess nothing.
The instant my hands are on her, I know I've made the right choice. The crazy ache in my lips when they're not on hers doesn't lie. Revenge is a dish best served hot, sweaty, seething with passion, and Anna's tonight's special.

"Hope you get those fucking tears out of your system soon, pet. They're not gonna delay a damned thing."
"What're you talking about? Delay what?" I snorted.
David jerked me against his chest, this time tighter. His hand rolled down my side, pressing my sweater snug. He didn't stop until his brute hand was clapped on my thigh, giving it a possessive squeeze.
Dangerous heat flooded me, rage and lust mingling in the dance I despised. It gave me my answer before he opened his mouth again.
No. Not there. Please!
"You're gonna do your fucking duties like a good wife, same as I'm gonna do mine like your lawfully wedded man. We've got certain traditions we respect around here, Anna. Shit means more to me than breathing. You'll figure that out fast." He sighed, hissing hot, guttural desire onto my neck, stopping just short of stamping his lips to my skin. "Nothing's gonna stop me from fucking your brains out, love. Nothing. This little contract gives me all the rights and privileges a husband deserves, and I'm not taking that shit for granted. You can whine all you want, but sometime in the next twenty-four hours, I'll be balls deep inside your sweet little pussy. Then you'll understand. Once you have this dick in you, you'll never be able to imagine another, especially not one attached to some pissant who doesn't know shit about blood or sex or ink like I do."
Shit! I stared deep into his eyes, searching, wondering if this entire thing was some sick bastard's joke.
There was amusement in his eyes, but it wasn't playful. The handsome psycho holding me was deadly serious.
I tried to keep breathing. It wasn't easy when the lust was overpowering my anger, one ruthless piece at a time with his hand so close to where I gushed and ached. I was coming unraveled right there, lusting after a man who filled my heart with total contempt.
He pulled himself away in one rough movement, sending me crumpling down again, clawing at the chair for support. I caught myself and stayed on my knees.
"I'll give you the day to get used to this house and screw your head on straight. Dry those bright eyes," he said, stepping away and pointing his finger at me. "Tonight, babe, it's just you, me, and a bed. Welcome to your fucking honeymoon."

Excerpt:

I stand at the top of the landing, watching Conner make his way through the crowd of police and witnesses, and just as he opens the door to exit the building, a familiar dark-haired girl gets up in his face.

She's one angry chick. Her manicured finger is pointing, her sensible nurse shoe is tapping, and her electric pink scrubs make her very hard to ignore. Even for Conner, the master at indifference.

He stands still for a moment as the girl says something, and then he turns and points straight at me.

And that's when I see her face.

Bebe Chambers.

She actually pushes Conner out of the way, almost mows down a uniformed police officer, and heads straight for the stairs.

I look over at that asshole detective to see if he's gonna stop her, but he's sporting a smug smile. OK. Here we go. My very first in-person meeting with Bebe the BFF and it's not gonna be pretty.

"You," she accuses me loudly. Loud enough to make people stop talking. "You are the reason she's gone."

I walk down the stairs slowly and put on my movie-star smile. "Miss Chambers. It's unfortunate that we have to meet under these circumstances-"

"Oh, no," she says, putting her hand up as I reach the bottom of the steps. She's tall. A lot taller than Grace. And she's seething. "You do not get to pretend like we are meeting under normal circumstances, Mr. Asher." My name comes off like an insult. "My best friend was fine for ten years and you come along and rip her life apart in a matter of weeks. If something happens to her, I will-" And then her eyes well up and tears burst forth. "I'll… I'll make you pay somehow. If she's hurt. If that freak has her again. If you did something to her and dumped her body-"

"Whoa, Bebe. You can't really believe that I'd hurt her?" "I really can, Mr. Asher. I read that spread about you in that magazine. They paint a pretty convincing picture of a sociopath."

"Socio-" I can't even say the word. "Look, Bebe. I love her. I realize we've had an unusual start to our relationship, and I understand that there are some very unique problems we have to work through. But you can't really think I'd hurt her."

"Then where is she?"

"I don't know."

"Her entire Filthy Blue Bird account is gone from Twitter! Just gone! She was on there for years! And now it's gone!"

"Miss Chambers, is it?" That asshole detective appears by her side. "We've contacted the corporate office and we're trying to retrieve her account, if that helps. We need to make sure there's no more incriminating evidence against Mr. Asher before we allow it to be deleted. Come, have a seat over here and let's try and piece together what might've happened." Bebe is led off and takes a seat on the couch I slept on last night. I follow them, but the detective stops me with a hand. "You stay there. I'd like her opinion without your interference."

Interference? Now I'm interference?

Adult Contemporary Romance

Description:

I just want my Grace back. I want the girl I found sending me dirty tweets on Saint Thomas. I want the girl who reluctantly gave in to my charms and let me boss her around. I want the girl who sent me to my knees and made me imagine what her fairy tale would look likewith me in it.I just want to move on.I want to plan the future and think about kids and preschools and college funds. I want everything she ever wanted, and I want us to make it happen together. But the media needs more from us. More dirt. More pain. More payment for past transgressions. You can't change the past. And even though Grace is ready to put her demons to bed, mine are just starting to get restless. Because when you've silenced as many enemies as I have, you know that secret won't stay buried forever.

About the Author:

 photo JA.jpg

J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really–Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master’s degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.
