How does music affect your writing?

I'm pretty sure that if I had been an extrovert instead of an extremely shy, nerdy introvert I'd be in a rock band. And yes, I can actually sing, but my throat gets dry and seals itself shut the moment someone asks me to sing for them. So instead of being the next Gwen Stefani, I listen to music while I write. Some of the scenes in First Frost and Glass Frost were actually inspired by certain songs.

For some reason I always start listening to Imogen Heap before I start writing. I love her music, it has such a dream-like quality to it and sometimes I feel as though it takes me to a completely different place in my mind. One of my favorite songs of hers are: "Hide and Seek", "Let Go", "The Moment I Said It", "2 - 1", "Can't Take It In" and "Glittering Cloud".

The song "The Cave" by Mumford and Sons inspired a scene in First Frost. It was this particular part of the song that made me stop and think:

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

I could picture Bianca with black ribbons around her neck as Queen Mirabel slowly drained the life out of her. What was amazing to me was how clearly I could imagine this happening to Bianca so it became my goal to get my characters to reach that point in the story. And then I had to ask myself will Bianca survive? Who will come to her rescue? What will happen to Mirabel afterwards?

Last year while I was thinking about the sequel to First Frost, I was listening to "The Catalyst" by Linkin Park. I hadn't written a single word yet, but as I listened to this song I had a clear image of Bianca crawling out of a pit. I was driving at the time (which is a dangerous thing to do if you have my brain because I literally go somewhere else when I'm writing) and I just burst into tears. I wanted to know what happened that made Bianca fall into that dark place. How was she supposed to get out of there? Why wasn't there someone there to help her? So that was another plot point that I could reach.

Like memories in cold decay
Transmissions echoing away
Far from the world of you and I
Where oceans bleed into the sky
Lift me up, Let me go...

It was that particular part of the song that just got to me for some reason. I can't wait for you all to read that scene in the book. I hate torturing my characters, but sometimes that's the only way they will learn and grow.

Another song that inspired a scene in Glass Frost is "Shipping Up to Boston" by Dropkick Murphys (yes, my taste in music is ALL OVER THE PLACE). I can't really tell you about it because it'll ruin part of the book. But I can say that Bianca learns a very harsh lesson on karma.

"Enchanted" by Taylor Swift. When I first heard that song I could only think of Bianca and Terrance dancing to it. I love the romance that has blossomed between them. Their relationship goes through many trials in the sequel. I really push them to the edge and I test their resolve to stay together. I do everything in my power to see if these two characters really are meant to be together.

I also listen to classical music when I write, because sometimes the lyrics get jumbled up in my mind and get in the way of my writing. I'll sometimes listen to Mozart, Beethoven and Vanessa Mae's album "Storm". I've also been listening to Vitamin String Quartet Performs Imogen Heap, all of my favorite songs of hers are played by a four string quartet.

Again…I love music. I think it has the power to transport you to another place in time. It can inspire you to write (even when you think your creative well is dry). It's one of the few things that can touch your soul. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my post and definitely check out some of the singers and bands I mentioned. You never know, it might inspire you to write something.

Guest Post Marketing with Kimberly Kinrade

So you wrote a book, or are currently working on it. That's awesome!

But writing your book is only one part of the process. It's a big part, don't get me wrong, but if your goal is to actually make MONEY doing this, to make a living or, at least pay a few bills, then you need to take the marketing part of your novel seriously.

Most writers aren't

marketers. That's where

I come in.

I went from being a single mom on welfare after my divorce years ago, to an award-winning, bestselling author making a 6 figure income on ROYALTIES ALONE. That's right, ALL of that comes from book sales.

I don't say this to brag, not at all. I'm not a New York Times bestseller (yet), or a household name (yet), but I am a successful mid-list author who has hit a few bestseller lists and sells consistently, particularly the titles I published under my own imprint. (Why I believe SO MUCH in being your own publisher, but that's a story for another post.)

While I have a lot of books out, the first 10 are with a publisher, and I have very little say over marketing, so they don't sell a whole lot. My recent books starting this January were under my imprint, allowing me to control the marketing, and they TOOK OFF! I'm now having months where I make more in 30 days then I did in a whole freaking year before.

Author Interview:

The Avid Reader: What inspired you to write The Waves?

Jen Minkman: The numerous reviewers who begged me to write a sequel to The Island or told me the story of the Island had to be expanded upon! I normally don't do sequels, but in this case, I felt like I had a lot more to tell.

The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Jen Minkman: I never consciously decided to be a writer; I just always loved inventing stories. I wrote my first story at age ten, and I haven't stopped ever since. However, I first wanted to be a PUBLISHED writer when I finished writing Shadow of Time (my first book) and felt the need to share it with the world. First I landed a print book deal in the Netherlands (my home country) and then I translated the book into English and self-published across the border.

The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Jen Minkman: At age three. I taught myself how to read with a little help from my dad. I didn't have the patience to wait for my mom to read me bedtime stories, so I decided to learn how to do it myself. They say patience is a virtue, but I beg to differ ;)

The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Jen Minkman: Lots of genres, but I mostly lean toward the fantastic genre (such as sci-fi, paranormal, fantasy, fairytales) as well as romance (especially paranormal romance). I generally enjoy YA more than I do adult fiction.

The Avid Reader: What is your favorite book?

Jen Minkman: Too difficult. There are too many! However, I feel that Lord of the Rings, The Martian Chronicles, The Belgariad, The Unearthly Trilogy and the Hunger Games deserve special mention.

The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Jen Minkman: Again, too difficult! Among my favourites are Ray Bradbury, Stefan Zweig, Renate Dorrestein, Tonke Dragt, Thea Beckman, Suzanne Collins, C S Lewis and JRR Tolkien.

The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Jen Minkman: I'm torn between choosing the moment man first invented words or the moment Jesus did his Sermon on the Mount. The birth of language has always fascinated me (and I'm convinced there are more animals that have language, such as dolphins and crows/ravens), but I also think it would be an awesome experience to be present at one of Jesus's most important moments. I'd like to know how much of his speech was faithfully preserved in the Bible and what it sounded like when he said it in Aramaic (or quite possibly Greek).

The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Jen Minkman: No, it comes very easy for me. Once I have an idea in my head, all I need is time and peace of mind to write it down. I have never suffered from writer's block in my life.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Jen Minkman: I have two really cute zebra finches. About a year ago, I taught them how to leave their cage safely and fly around the living room. So now they leave their 'house' in the morning, fly around and have a hanging spot on the curtain rails (I put paper on the window sills now because they poo there!) and return for baths and food in the afternoon. I think they are the happiest birds in all of The Hague!

The Avid Reader: What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Jen Minkman: I love sushi and Thai food, but whenever it's that time of the month, I can't stay away from peanut M&Ms.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Jen Minkman: Just do it. But don't publish too quickly; give your work to beta-readers and take their advice seriously, or you'll never learn to hone your craft.

My Review:

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Walt lives on an island that is divide by a wall and on his side of the wall Walt and everyone on his side have been taught by their ancestors that Lady Annabelle lives on the other side and that one day Lady Annabelle will be returning for them on a beautiful ship. Walt and his cousin Yorrick who just happens to be the son of the Bookkeeper, one who takes care of and reads all the books on the island, are starting to wonder if all they have been taught about Annabelle is true or not. They are being to think that they have been lied to all these years. Yorrick tells Walt that he thinks it is time he talks to the priest about what he has figured out by reading all of the books on the books they have. Yorrick goes to the temple one morning and tells the priest that he doesn't believe that Lady Annabelle exists. Walt gets in trouble at school and decides to leave early and go meet Yorrick a little earlier than was planned. When he gets there he sees Yorrick stretching getting ready for his run. Walt sees someone rushing toward Yorrick and before Walt can comprehend what is going on and warn Yorrick the guy pushes Yorrick off the cliff. Walt thinks that the person that pushed him off the cliff was an unbeliever from the other side of the wall. Walt goes for help to rescue Yorrick but he doesn't tell anyone that he was pushed off the cliff he is afraid that whoever killed Yorrick will kill him if he tells.

After Walt's cousin Yorrick is murdered Walt becomes the Bookkeepers assissatant because he is his next living relative. Walt now gets to read all of the books and he learns the truth the same as Yorrick did. Walt with his Dad's help builds a ship to sail to the other side. He doesn't think that Annabelle is real and is going to return for them so he is going to find out for himself what is on the other side. Walt keeps his ship building a secret he thinks if the wrong person finds out then they will kill him too.

I loved reading The Island and learning about a group of people who were taught to believe in a book that was not real. They believed that this book was real because of what they had been told all of their lives. They were told the same thing year after year so eventually there was no one left alive who knew the truth. These people were known as the unbelievers and lived on one side of the wall while the people on the other side of the wall were known as the fools. I liked reading The Waves and finding out about the unbelievers who live on the other side of the wall. You've got these two groups of people who a hundred and fifty years ago was brought to this island and I guess they got into an argument as to what was right and what was wrong. They couldn't agree and probably started acting like the kids they were and thought hey we don't have to put up with you or live with you. So they decided to build a wall so they wouldn't have to be together any longer. I would love to know the who, what, how, why and when the children of the island's trouble all began. I would also like to know more about Leia and Walt's life together. Do they set sail on the ship that Walt built? What do they find on the other side? Do I recommend The Waves? Yes of course I do but I do suggest that you read The Island first so that you can learn why and how they ended up on the island.

Jen Minkman (1978) was born in Holland, in the town of Alphen aan den Rijn. When she was 19, she moved between The Hague, Salzburg (Austria), Brussels (Belgium) and Cambridge (UK) to complete her studies in intercultural communication. She is currently a teacher of English, career counsellor and teenage coach at a secondary school in Voorburg, Holland. She tries to read at least 100 books a year (and write a few, too!). She is a published author in her own country, and translates her own books from Dutch into English for self-publication.

Adam felt his breath catch when a dark-haired beauty stepped out of the carriage. The long, intricate lace veil she wore covered her elaborately styled hair but did little to hide the ebony strands. Rounded with delicate cheekbones, and a high upturned nose, her face was flawless, beautiful-unlike any other woman's he'd ever seen. Her olive complexion was so different from the aboriginal women his father had employed.

He shivered as her eyes lifted away from her older companion and met his. With the force of a kangaroo kick, attraction slammed into him. He inhaled, frozen, unable or unwilling to break eye contact. Her eyes widened a degree, and he saw her plump lips part in a soundless gasp before she ducked her head, a wave of pink staining her cheeks.

He glanced away as he walked toward the team. He wasn't the son of an affluent man here; there was no room for anything between them, not now. As Adam strode forward to hold the horses, he caught the look of disparagement, the lack of emotion in the depths of the older gentleman's eyes. Adam stared at the wealthy, distinguished man for a moment then began to unhitch the wheeler.

"You will do well," the man said, venom lacing his words, "to keep your distance. A criado has no place near royalty." The well-dressed gentleman stared down at him, condescension in his eyes.

Adam lifted his head to glare at the self-important man. "Señor, welcome to Los Santiago Hacienda."

About the Author:

Reading has been such a large part of my life. I cut my literary teeth on such authors as Louis L'Amour, Nora Roberts and Janet Dailey. For me it wasn't such a jump from reading the wonderful tales these authors spun to imagining my own.

Soon I was writing poetry, short stories and by junior high I'd written my first full length romance novel. Since then I've taken my love of history and my passion for writing and combined them into what I hope will continue to prove a successful career.

With six books contracted, four of which are currently available in print. All are available in electronic format with the last two ebooks due for a release in May and the other in the summer. I'm currently working on three projects, an erotic paranormal romance featuring a witch who loves Christmas, another Ancient Ireland novel, rich in the history of the Irish Celtic peoples, and plotting out a Cowboy Series tentatively titled "The James Gang".

Of course I've got a lot more on the go. I'm developing and growing my editing company with some amazing authors, working on polishing my concepts and plans for upcoming books within the paranormal genres, and keeping up on my writing and being a full time mom, working outside of the house…it's amazing what one can manage in a 16 hour day.

Born and raised in the rural Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Jonathan wrote his first fantasy/sci-fi novel at the age of 13. After studying writing and communication at James Madison University, Jonathan turned his passion for writing into a full-time technical writing career in the DC Metro area, working for companies like Sprint/Nextel, Time Warner Cable, and Sirius XM Radio, where he had an opportunity to combine his love of music with his love of writing.
