Excerpts:

Jorr had never seen snow before. It wasn't the kind of weather that Elves traditionally preferred, and so they had little to do with snow.
Stepping shakily out of his boat, Jorr's foot sank deep into a mass of the damp substance. If the wetness of the sea couldn't get through his oiled leather boots, he knew this snow would fare no better. Still, the cold was unpleasant.
He stood and stretched, satisfied that he could do so after three long days on the sea. He looked out over the vastness of icy, dark gray water he had just crossed and frowned. It had taken so long, it was hard to believe that he had sailed across the narrowest part. Crossing that water again was not something to look forward to.
Then another thought - depending on what he found here, maybe he wouldn't have to?
In any event, he was here now. He still had a good distance to travel if the maps were correct.
Jorr grasped the side of the small boat that had been his home for the past three days and pulled it completely onto the shore.
The snow had stopped falling, yet there was plenty of it already on the ground here. The day was overcast, but was beginning to get darker, and the wind wasn't helping with cold or visibility. Waves of snow dust were washing over him. He pulled the hood of his cloak over his bald head. He had waited too late. The hood had collected snow inside of it, and now it fell down past the side of his face and down his neck.
What a vile substance!
He resigned himself to the sensation, then looked around some more. The snow-covered beach was stark white, contrasted with a row of dark, dead trees a short distance away.
A very lonely place.
Jorr dragged the boat through the snow up towards the trees. He was so tired, but he had to get to those trees and start a fire, or he might fall asleep and freeze to death.
If that happened, the hope of the Elven people would die with him.
Grasping the small pouch he carried reminded him of how painfully little food he had been able to bring. The Elves had little enough at all in these dark times, and Jorr had hidden away as much as he could before his trip. It was not mucht. He had hoped for a bountiful forest where he could hunt, but as the island had grown into view bit by bit he had realized the forest was dead.
Just as the Elders had said it would be.
They were right about this, but that didn't mean they were right about everything. In Jorr's opinion, the Elders were wrong about most everything, and were not relevant any longer. Only a little time left, and they would see that he was right. Although he was but fifty years of age, and considered a child, he felt he was the one seeing reality, while the Elders were content to meekly accept their fate.
Shivering, Jorr realized that he was standing around freezing instead of building his fire.
Leaving his boat by the forest edge, he made his way through the trees and found what he considered to be an acceptable spot to make a fire. There was a row of trees grown tightly enough together to block much of the wind and the snow, so beside them the ground was only lightly covered.
Jorr opened his pack and withdrew the Fire Element.
The dull red rock glowed warm in his hands. Powerful guilt came over him. Although snow was new to him, the Elven people were no strangers to cold. They lived in a land that was nearly all desert, and the nights were as mercilessly cold as the days were hot. It seemed every night you would wish for the same burning sun that you cursed during the day.
Fire Elements were precious. They represented the last vestiges of magic the Elves still possessed. Supposedly they were used as children's fireworks back in the Before-Times, but now the few they had left were critical to surviving the cold nights of the ShirraLand Expanse where the Elves resided.
All Elves were now taught to make a fire as soon as they could hold a stick, so Jorr knew he could make one from the wood in these dead trees if necessary, but he couldn't take the chance that there would be no forest here. He had to be sure he could survive his journey, so he had stolen one of the Fire Elements the night he left.
It would all be worth it. He did this not for himself, but for all the Elven people.

RAVE REVIEWS for the Midnight Fire Series!
"The writing is effortlessly mind blowing. I could not put this entire series down. Once you're hooked, you won't either because it'll eat you up not knowing what happened! And then you'll pick a team like I did and you'll fall in love with all the characters and you'll want all the bad guys to die horribly! Just trust me when I say it really is your loss to miss out on this series! It's a blaze of glory!" - Happy Tales and Tails Blog

"Kaitlyn Davis writes some of the best action scenes I have come across in a young adult book; they are fast paced and so well delivered making this more than just a silly romance." - Reflections of a Bookworm

"The only downside to this series, is that it ended. But the ending was beautiful." - My Seryniti

"Kira isn't a human girl who is one dimensional and in love with a vampire. She's a well-thought out character who comes to life from the pages and steals into your heart. Read the books. Do it." - Urban Girl Reader

"I love and hate how fast of a read this was! I love it because I couldn't get enough of it and hate it because once I finished I wanted more!" - I Just Wanna Sit Here And Read

"I really enjoyed Ms Davis's writing, I was riveted throughout and was eager to see what would happen - there was drama, danger, action and romance that was wonderfully detailed and described." - Obsession With Books

"You'll make friends with Kira, choose sides with Tristan and Luke, and fall in love with the story at heart about a girl with so bright a future....even shades aren't gonna cut it." - Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers

Guest Post: "The Lure of the Bad Boy"
Okay…let's face it - bad boys are hot! The brooding, dark, tortured soul is something we girls can't resist… but why? What is it really that makes these guys so irresistible? What is the lure of the bad boy?

In my opinion it boils down to one thing: excitement. Danger is exhilarating. Why else do we ride roller coasters or watch scary movies? We seek the thrill, the moment that your stomach catches in your throat and you're reminded that life is fleeting. The danger makes you feel alive. And what girl doesn't want a guy that makes her feel things for the first time? It's downright sexy! Even the most well behaved girl secretly dreams of doing something crazy, of feeling the passion in recklessness.

But, most girls (myself included!) would never do these things in real life! In real life, the bad boy is a bad idea. They are misguided, mean and often beyond redemption. In real life, the bad boy is too dangerous, which is why we turn to books! There is no better way to live out a fantasy than to read a book. In a story, the bad boy can be saved - he is not a bad person, just a tortured soul waiting for someone to come along and see beyond his rough exterior. In books, the bad boy comes with a soft heart and the reader can be the one to save him. The danger is exciting, but it is also safe because we, the readers, know we can't really get hurt. We get the sexiness of danger without the risk of heartache… can I just say, amazing!

In my Midnight Fire Series, I couldn't resist including my own brooding bad boy. Tristan is definitely a tortured soul, a boy with a past he is running away from but can't escape. He fights the rules, those of the humans and those of his own paranormal world, and he feels completely alone. He retreats into his artwork and pushes those around him away. Well, at least he did until my main character Kira comes along, but you'll just have to read Ignite to learn more about that :)

I do have to say, I love the good guys too, which is why I love my other leading man Luke! And like my main character Kira, I'm sort of torn between who I like more… but that is another post for another time!

What are your favorite fictional bay boys? I'm sort of in love with Damon from Vampire Diaries, Will from Infernal Devices, and, the original bad boy, Rhett Butler from Gone With the Wind!

About the Author
I've always been a writer. I grew up duct taping my novels together, started writing complete manuscripts in high school and studied creative writing at Johns Hopkins University. Upon graduating, I decided it was finally time to actually give my dream career a chance. So, of course, I started writing a young adult paranormal romance series -- and no, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon. I've been a true paranormal supporter for my entire life! I blame my obsession almost completely on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, my all-time favorite television show. And, before you ask: Yes, I own every season... even the post WB ones! I especially challenge anyone to watch the first three seasons and not fall in love with Angel, securing a lifelong love of vampires! Other culprits of my paranormal obsession are some of my favorite authors: JK Rowling, Raymond Feist, Meg Cabot, Richelle Mead, Lynne Ewing and Tamora Pierce.

B.K. Walker brings you a new twist on a Zombified tale, with a mix of dystopian big girl romance, humor and gore. This is one short story you won't want to miss!

Author Interview:

The Avid Reader: What inspired you to write Zombies Love Big Girls Too?

B.K. Walker: I wanted to do a Halloween treat for my readers and this is the story that came forth. My Muse is all over the place, so sometimes we branch out on genre, lol.

The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

B.K. Walker: 8 years old is the age I remember writing stories to tell to my stuffed animals during storytime while we played school. I would write the story then line my stuffed animals up on the bed like they were sitting at desks in a classroom and read the story to them.

The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

B.K. Walker: Oh boy...I don't have many memories before the age of 15. Small things pop into my head, as with the prior question, and from talking to my Mom asking her questions about when I was little, but I can't remember not ever reading. I'm not sure if it's repressing memories or from being hit on the head with a bowling ball. Don't ask, lol.

The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

B.K. Walker: Paranormal Romance, but I will read anything at least once.

The Avid Reader: What is your favorite book?

B.K. Walker: It's a series. The Scanguards Vampires Series by Tina Folsom. LOVE her writing.

The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

B.K. Walker: Tina Folsom. I get so lost in her books. As soon as I start reading one, there is no tearing me away until I'm done and she ALWAYS leaves me wanting more. I get so disappointed when her books end and I can't wait for the next. She actually introduced me to Paranormal Historical Romance, my first endeavor in Historical anything! Haven't found anyone to compare yet. Love her!

The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

B.K. Walker: I would go to Ireland. Probably back to the 50's or 60's. I love that time era and always wanted to go to Ireland. :)

The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

B.K. Walker: This is a mood question. It really depends on my mood, and if I don't fight with my Muse, the story flows so much better. It does come easy to me, telling the story, but when I have to add scenes to fill in the blanks or just to make it longer, that's when I struggle most. I've always been able to tell a story in a small amount of space, and that's my gift I've decided, and right now it works best for me as I don't have much time these days for writing. So, I just write shorts and still give my readers a taste of something new. I will release more as I get more time, but right now, shorts are good for me.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

B.K. Walker: Haha! Okay, I have four dogs (2 Catahoola's, a Pit Bull, and a Daschund/Corgy Mix), I have 5 cats, 11 chickens, a cow, 2 goats and a fish. We did have 5 pigs too, but they were raised for a reason. Yes! I'm an animal lover. I lucked out when I got married because my husband loves them just as much. This year we're looking to get a miniature donkey!

The Avid Reader: What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

B.K. Walker: My husband makes the best Chili in the world! It's got a little kick, but not too much to take away from the flavor. It's delicious and to die for!

The Avid Reader: Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

B.K. Walker: Yes, I do *winks*. As a coach and mentor, I find that many would-like-to-be-authors are so afraid to write the book that's inside of them dying to get out. My biggest advice to them is this...

Just show up. Don't put it off, don't listen to other people, don't think you can't do it. You can, and you should. You deserve to reach for your dreams and live your passions, and if writing or wanting to write is a passion, to tell your story, then just do it. (No, not a Nike endorsement lol, but I do wear Nike sneakers). You'll never know how great you are until you take that first step!

My Review:

The following review is my honest opinion and not a paid review.

Millie is a young girl who lost both of her parents to zombies. Everyone in the whole world has been infected. But for some reason the zombies don't want to eat Millie. They are not repulsed by her smell. The zombies will kill and eat all the other humans but just not Millie. She doesn't understand the reason for this. Until one day she realizes she is being followed. What is following her? Millie is awe struck and joyous all at the same time because she believes she is the only human left uninfected by the virus. Then one day she runs into to the person or shall I say zombie that keeps following her. Right away Millie realizes that something is not quite right with this zombie. He is different than all of the other zombies she has come in contact with. What makes this one zombie different than all the rest? Want to know? Want me to tell you? As they say sorry Charlie can't do it, no way no how. To find out why this zombie is different than all of the other zombies you have read Zombies Love Big Girls Too by buying your own copy today!

Zombie's Love Big Girls Too is way different than most books about zombies that I have ever read. I hope to read more about Zombies having affairs in the near future. I can't wait now to read more of B.K. Walker's work. You want to read something new and exciting well then Zombie's Love Big Girls Too is one book you will probably want to add to that list.

I also enjoyed reading the first chapter of The Immortyl Kisses: Rise of the Phoenix by B.K. Walker at the end of the book. It sounds real intriguing as well. I love reading about vampires too.

I won a copy of Zombie's Love Big Girls Too from Bikers With Books on Facebook. Thanks B.K. and Bikers With Books. You guys are awesome!

Review of The Boy in the Woods By Jen Minkman

The Boy in the Woods Cover photo TheBoyFromtheWoods.jpg

Title: The Boy in the Woods
By Jen Minkman
Publication Date: October 4th, 2013

Blurb:

Julia fell down on her knees next to his lifeless body, her heart filling with dread as she noticed the left side of his face was covered in blood. He had fallen off the motorbike, hitting his temple on a sharp-edged rock. His head injury looked really, really bad.

"Michael?" she whispered softly, putting a trembling hand on his forehead. "Can you hear me?"

Julia has been in love with Michael for years. He's the hottest guy in school, and she can't believe her luck when they finally hit it off during Senior Prom. Her dream doesn't last, though: after a few dates, he callously dumps her out of the blue. Summer vacation starts with Julia feeling heart-broken and miserable.

But then she rescues Michael in the woods when he has a motorcycle accident in a heavy thunderstorm. From that point onward, her life is turned upside down. Michael has changed completely after the blow to the head that nearly killed him... and he wants her back. But why is he so different? And will she be able to trust him this time around?

Can the boy who broke your heart ever win it back again..?

Soundtrack to the Book: Youtube & Youtube

Excerpt:

Julia trailed behind her boss as she walked over to the cash register, looking left and right to catch a glimpse of her other colleagues.

"Kolbe!" her brand-new boss shouted toward the entrance. "Come and help me out, will you?"

Julia stopped dead, frozen in her tracks. Was she going deaf, or had Martin just said… Her heart hammered ridiculously fast as her eyes zoomed in on the front door.

"He'll come and help you at the register." Martin's voice sounded as though it was coming from far away. He left her standing there, rooted to the spot.

Julia tried to snap out of her paralysis and stumbled the final few steps to the counter. Her breath hitched when she saw an all-too-familiar figure walking in her direction. She swallowed. But surely it couldn't be. Oh God, no. No, no, no. This was not happening.

And then, she couldn't look anywhere else but up, straight into two eyes green as the forest.

"What on earth are you doing here?" Julia stared at him in alarm.

"I work here," he replied unfazed, a half-smile tugging at his lips.

"Since when?" It was simply not possible that she, in her unfailing stalker mode, had somehow missed this: Michael holding a job at the same bookstore she'd applied to two days ago.

"Since last week."

His smug composure quickly turned her initial befuddlement into outright infuriation.

"Why?" she demanded fractiously.

He raised an eyebrow. "To earn some extra cash?" he declared in an 'isn't-that-really-obvious' tone.

"But why here?"

Michael started to chuckle. "Why are you giving me the third degree?"

"Are you following me or something?" she grumbled, her heart treacherously leaping in her chest for a moment as she considered the possibility.

"Well, I'm sorry to burst your bubble here, but I think it's the other way around. First, you turn up at the pub I always hang out at on weeknights, then, you decide to take a jog near the place where I almost had a fatal accident, and now you turn out to have applied for a job at the same store I've been working at for the past week. What does it look like to you?"

Shucks, he was right. Julia resisted the urge to stamp her foot like a little girl. "In your dreams, you arrogant bastard," she muttered. "Everybody says I should stay away from you."

In the silence that followed, she could still hear her heart beating in her throat.

My Review:

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Julia is a young girl who lives in a small town where everybody knows everybody as the saying goes. Julia is in her last year of school. In the fall she will be going to the University where she lives. A while back Julia went out with this guy and ended up at his house in his bedroom with him. Julia gave herself to him and had never heard from him since. He hurt her very badly and now Julia doesn't really trust anyone especially him.

But even after everything that she has been through she still has feelings for Michael. She knows she should stay away from him even her best friend Gaby tells her the same thing but at the same time Gaby is like you know it is your life and I can't tell you how to lead it.

At the beginning of the school year a new guy Thorsten moves in the house across the street. Julia's little sister Anne and Thorsten's little sister Sabine are best friends. Julia likes Thorsten and thinks that he is a really great guy but she is still being drawn to Michael. Julia feels as if she is sending mixed signals to Thorsten and really she is.

Julia gets a job for the summer at a bookstore. She thinks this is real cool as she loves books and reading. She finds out on her first day of her new job that the guy that hurt her is working at the same store that she is. She loves her new job and figures she can handle working with him.

How can anyone be so lucky as to have two guys be in love with you at the same time? Julia is very lucky in this department because she has both Michael and Thorsten in love with her. They don't fight over as a matter of fact they get along just fine. Now that is two very grown up people you know when they can get along with each other for the feelings of a girl. They both care so much for her that they will both sacrifice their own feelings just for her.

The Boy From The Woods will keep you in suspense all the way through the book wondering who it is that Julia really cares about. Is she in love with Michael or is she in love with Thorsten? Who will she chose? Will she choose the nice guy Thorsten or will she choose the bad a** guy Michael? Or does she even have to make the choice? Want to find out? Well then you are going to have to head on over to Amazon there and pick up a copy of The Boy From The Woods and find out. You won't regret it because it is a book that is just filled with a whole lot of mystery and suspense. You will fall in love with all of the character as if they are your best friends too.

Excerpt:
When the concert finally ended and people began to file from the hall, Dean put his arm around my waist and led me out the door into the cold night.

"Was that the lamest thing ever to do on a first date?" he asked.

I laughed. "No, it was fun. And you have quite the voice, Mr. Riley. When they did the sing-along, I thought you might just sort of lip synch along, but you were belting it out. I'm impressed."

Dean chuckled, covering his face in embarrassment. "There's something about a group of people all singing together," he said. "You should see me at concerts. Or karaoke."

"Well, maybe that's what we should do for our next date…" I bit my lip, hoping I'd sounded casual.

"Maybe," he said slowly. "Although I think I'd like to go somewhere I can actually look at you and talk to you." He glanced over at me, his gaze unwavering. "You know?"

I nodded. He was still looking at me, and the intensity of his gaze made me go warm all over, despite the chill in the air. I was about to reply when I slipped on a patch of ice and skidded forward, letting out a little shriek.

I braced myself to hit the cold, hard sidewalk, but Dean managed to catch me before I reached the ground. He was laughing as he helped me straighten up, his arms wrapped loosely around my waist.

"Well, that was embarrassing." I buried my face in the shoulder of Dean's coat. I could feel the laughter vibrating through him, and I started to laugh too, shaking my head. "I feel like I should make some cheesy crack about how I'm falling for you."

Dean's laughter stopped abruptly, and I whipped my head up to look at him.

"Oh god," I groaned. "I should just…stop talking. Forever. Then I wouldn't embarrass myself anymore. You know, unless I fall on my ass in the snow or trip over my own feet or spill coffee on you like I've already almost done twice now."

Dean's lips quirked slightly as he placed a finger over my lips to stop my rambling. "Are you falling for me?"

"It's too soon," I said. "I can't be. I mean, you don't just fall for someone this fast, right? We knew each other when we were kids, but that was a long time ago. And even though I was in love with you then, I don't even know you now. So I can't be falling for you. Right?"

"You were in love with me when we were kids?"

Crap, had I actually said that? I had been right: I did need to stop talking forever. Maybe I could become a nun and take a vow of silence. Or since I wasn't Catholic, maybe just the vow of silence part. "Y-yeah, I think so," I said finally.

"Huh." Dean released me and took a couple steps away, then came back and repeated the process. He was pacing in a tiny, tight circle, and after a few turns I put my hand on his arm to stop him before we both got dizzy.

"What are you thinking?" I asked, although I wasn't quite sure I wanted to hear his answer.

"I was thinking…" he said slowly, meeting my gaze again. "I was thinking how mad I am at myself for not coming back sooner. I was thinking of all the time we wasted when we could have been together. I should have come back that summer, and the next, and then moved here when my granddad was still alive."

I was so shocked I didn't know what to say. I could feel my eyebrows up around my hairline somewhere, and my lips were parted in surprise.

"I mean, I knew I had feelings for you when I was sixteen, and I knew you had a crush on me, but I thought that was it. Two years age difference when you're that young seems like a big deal, you know? And then the next year when we were older and we talked until I went to college, my feelings for you grew, but I didn't see how it could work since I was there and you were here. But now…now there's nothing stopping us. Not distance or a miniscule age difference, or anything. Unless…"

"Unless what?" I asked breathlessly.

"Unless you think this is just some…I don't know, some leftover childhood feelings or something." He shrugged. "That we're both remembering how it was back then and imagining that there's something between us now."

Was he right? My mind whirled like the snow around us, and I closed my eyes, trying to gather my thoughts.

No. This pull, this attraction, the way I felt whenever he looked at me or touched me or smiled at me, wasn't imagined. It wasn't some remnant of feelings from six years ago. I had been a child then, but I wasn't now. "I have a pretty good imagination, but I don't think it's that good," I told him.

He let out a little laugh. "Me either." Gripping my shoulders, he pulled me closer so our bodies were pressed together. "I think I know how we can know for sure, though," he said, his eyes sparkling in the dim light.

"Like an experiment?" I asked, trying to hold back my laughter.

"Something like that." With a smile flitting across his face, he lowered his mouth to mine.

For six years, I'd imagined what it would be like to be kissed by Dean Riley. Even when I'd told myself to forget about him and had moved on after we stopped talking, he still slipped into my dreams and fantasies from time to time. But every dream, every fantasy, couldn't compare to the reality of Dean's warm lips on mine, his hands gripping my shoulders, his tongue touching and then entwining with mine.

And I definitely wasn't imagining the warmth that blossomed inside me and spread in tingling waves to every part of my body.

"I'd consider that experiment a success." Dean spoke softly, but I could hear an underlying huskiness that sent a delicious shiver zinging through me.

Laughing breathlessly, I threw my arms around his neck and closed my eyes as I hugged him. "Are we really going to do this? See if what we felt all those years ago could turn into something real?"

"I'm willing to try if you are," Dean said, his breath tickling my ear. "And I think we've already made a pretty good start."
