Published By- Staccato Publishing

Blurb:

Sergeant Justin Shaw returned from the war with what is left of his unit, though instead of being hailed as heroes, they are being sought as test subjects. Their last mission behind enemy lines to obtain a WMD ended with them exposed and on the run. Their goal is not only to destroy the weapon, but also the program being run by their own government. Justin and his men have sacrificed everything for their mission. Will it be enough? Samantha James, a girl whose father disappeared almost twenty years ago unwittingly holds the key. When her father returns bodies start to fall. Sam doesn't know who to trust. Both Justin and her father have their own agendas and either one of them could end up with her dead.

Excerpt:

Carefully, she pushed open the door and entered her apartment. The growling ball of fur in her grasp was having no part of it. Clawing at her with his sharp back claws, Bill took a few chunks out of her forearms as he finally leapt free of her, racing down the hall and out of sight. Sam didn't give chase or even turn her head to see where he went. He wouldn't go far, he never did on the rare occasion he got out. In a few minutes he would be beating at the door with his soft, declawed front paws. Her focus was on what had incited such panic in her even keel pet. Why was Bill so scared to go inside? He liked Paul. Even more unsettling was the feeling crawling down her spine. Something was very wrong. She could feel it.

There was no sound or movement coming from inside. When Paul was over he always had the television turned on a game whether it was football, basketball, soccer, whatever. He always had to have background noise. Unlike Sam, he liked noise.

"Paul?" Sam realized she was crouching. Telling herself she was being ridiculous, she forced herself to stand up, pushing the door open and peering inside. There was no answer. Maybe he was tired and had nodded off she told herself. It did nothing for the now painful gooseflesh covering her body. "Paul?" she called his name again, whispering it this time. He wasn't in the living room or kitchen. She pushed a cabinet door closed with the back of one hand as she walked past. He had to have been here, she never left drawers or cabinets open. Glancing around, she noticed a piece of mail hanging over the edge of her sorter. What had he been doing in here, snooping? With considerably more effort, she forced her feet toward the bedroom, stepping over one of Bill's toys lying in the middle of the floor.

"Paul?" His name died on her lips as she walked past the open bathroom door and froze. Without knowing what she was doing, Sam drifted inside and stopped just inside the doorway. Her hand flew to her mouth too late to stop the scream.

Character Bio's:

Justin Shaw, born to humble roots, was raised on a small family farm outside Nashville, TN. Working alongside his father in the fields after school and with his uncle in his metal shop when Justin was in high school, he often asked about his family's time in the service. It was a natural choice to enlist when he turned eighteen. A hard worker and intelligent boy, Justin impressed his superiors. And when they recommended he try for the Rangers, he did. Loyal to a fault, Justin lived for his men. They, in turn, followed him without question and had one of the highest success rates in their missions.

Evan Marcus has always pursued facts. Graduating at the top of his class from school, he ran out of money to pursue his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering. The Army offered a logical solution: four years of service and they would pay for his education. Ever a believer in logic, Marcus enlisted. In his first year, his girlfriend found out she was pregnant and they wed. Their daughter, Marianna, became the new love of his life and everything he did, he did for her. Evan looked forward to raising his family and pursuing his career in science after serving.

Samantha James, the only child of Steven and Brenda James, was abandoned by her father when she was nine years old. Never quite getting over his loss, she worked hard to please her mother. A good student, hard worker, she was a favorite of her teachers and bosses throughout her career. That same need to please did not extend into her relationships where she was unwilling to let anyone close enough to hurt her the way her father did when he left. Brenda and Sam were very close and there was nothing Sam wouldn't do for her mother.

Bill the cat. Knowing Sam needed someone to give her heart to, Brenda gave the tiny gray kitten to her daughter when she moved to her first apartment. Her confessor and companion, Bill has never been a quiet one. They often joke he is part Siamese, one of the most vocal of the cat breeds. With a steady diet of good food and love, Bill grew from tiny kitten to beast. By the time he was a year old he weighed in at nearly twenty pounds, not all of it muscle. Bill loves Sam but he is a cat and their loyalty can be fickle. A few treats and a warm lap are all it takes to entice him over to the other side.

Excerpt:

"So you're warning me away from you?" I was appalled. "Then why are you doing this…guarding me at all? Why the torment? Why watch over me when you know that…that we should be more?" I felt on the verge of tears, which amazed me. How could pain be so sharp in the afterlife? "Answer me, Eran. Why?"

He sighed. "Because it is my job."

I gasped, more offended than I'd ever been. "I'm a job to you?" I stared at him and waited for his head to rise but he refused to look at me.

"Yes," he said weakly, defeated. His beautiful, rugged voice released as a whimper and the pain inside me grew. "You are just a job."

I didn't think it was possible but the emptiness I'd felt with Eran being gone those many weeks held no comparison to the magnitude of what I was experiencing right now.

I felt as if I had been gutted.

"No…" I shook my head. "I don't believe you because you see, Eran, I can feel your emotions run through me. Whether you want to admit them or not, I know how you feel about me."

Stunned, his head jerked up, his brilliant blue-green eyes drilling into mine. "You feel me too? How can that be?"

"I don't know. But I do know that I feel in you the same emotions I have."

He groaned and turned away. "That's not possible…" he muttered, pausing. When he spoke again his voice was strained, determined. I drew in a breath as the intensity of these emotions ran through me. "It doesn't matter. I won't let this happen. This will not happen…I will not let us be together."

"Because you are my guardian? Then let me make it easy on us…You're fired."

"It doesn't work that way, Magdalene," he said, quieter but still resolute.

"I didn't want you to watch over me, Eran. I never asked for it."

As if he'd become an entirely new person, his reply was flat and detached. "You're a messenger. You require a guardian. It's as simple as that."

"Then we've just solved the issue, didn't we?" I said causing him to finally look up. "This will be my last message. It's from me to you…goodbye Eran."

Turning swiftly, I walked away just before the tears came.

Author Interview:

What inspired you to write Fallen?

I started writing my first book in January 2009, after Joyce Durham lost her battle to colon cancer. I am good friends with her daughter, Erika, who was then faced with the very difficult task of learning how to deal with the loss of her mother. Witnessing her struggle and that of the Durham family, I wished there was someone who could visit with those who had passed over to the other side and bring back messages to the living, reassuring them that all was fine with their loved one. And from it, Magdalene Tanner was born. I went on to write FALLEN in just under two months, releasing it in March 2009.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

My first story was about a girl who survives a nuclear blast. I stored it in the freezer, where my dad said it would be safest in the event our house burnt down. I still laugh at myself over that one.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I was in sixth grade when I read The Mad Scientists' Club by Bertrand R. Brinley. It was stacked in the small shelves of books we had in the back corner of my classroom, and once I read it I asked the teacher if I could take it home. I still remember her eyebrows shooting up in surprise. She told my mother later that I was her first student to ever ask to keep a book.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

All, fiction or non-fiction makes no difference. If I find it appealing, I read it.

What is your favorite book?

When I was younger it was Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. In college it was Young Men and Fire by Norman Maclean. A few years ago, it was Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Currently, I'm in search of that next life-altering book that will stir my emotions and make me stay up until dawn to finish that last page.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Not to be difficult here but I'm a fan of Annie Rice's prose and of Aaron Sorkin's dialogue. They write in different genres and with divergent character personalities, so I would never combine the two. Each stands on their own distinct podiums of greatness.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

London during the Black Plague. Like Magdalene in the Guardian Trilogy I'd like to spread the truth on how it spread in hopes of saving a few of those lives. This comes to mind because I'm writing the second prequel to the Guardian Trilogy and this place and time period is where the novel is set.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Novel writing, for me, begins agonizingly slow, but as the novel progresses I become a bundle of frenzied energy completely immersed in the concept of the book. At that point, I'm waking myself up at 3am from a dead sleep to run to my desk and write a reminder note on a character quote or plot angle. By the end of the novel, I'm thinking about it while walking, sleeping, eating, breathing. So while it's not easy or hard, per se, it is a gradual immersion into the world in which I'm creating. If you think this is odd, that's all right. I do, too.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I currently have the honor of taking care of two fantastic dogs, both of whom are right now waiting patiently to be walked.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Okay, this is very veggie of me but I'm openly admitting this is my current go-to food. Sweet potato wedges with my homemade chipotle aoli dipping sauce. They smell like roasted marshmallows and they taste like a blend of sweet salty goodness. I have them every week.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Here, I'm going to pass on the best advice I've ever been given, directly or inadvertently. Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. I think Einstein coined that phrase. I cannot express enough how true that is in the world of writing. We writers may have a phenomenal idea but if we don't mold it, rework it, and slave over it then it will never come to fruition.

Author Interview:

What inspired you to write FRONTIERS?

First of all, thank you for having me, I appreciate this opportunity!

FRONTIERS: Book Two in the Cybersp@ce Series, is the second novel in the Cybersp@ce series, an exciting vision of an optimistic near-future, and is set after CYBERSP@CE but before NEW BEGINNINGS. Here's the blurb for FRONTIERS.

*A Dream to Unite Humanity...*

Scientists discover the technology to successfully construct Earth's first interstellar spacecraft, code named Frontier. Hank Reynolds, a gifted and courageous test pilot for the United States Air Force, is assigned to test pilot humanity's first interstellar spacecraft on a historic flight to Alpha Centauri. With their dreams crumbling around them, will they be able to discover who is behind the plot to steal the alien technology, and to murder those closest to it?

The concept for FRONTIERS came out of my interest in science-fiction, politics, religion, and a positive vision of the future. As the Cybersp@ce Series progresses from Cybersp@ce to Frontiers to New Beginnings, the novels become increasingly

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I've always enjoyed reading, but in terms of when I knew I wanted to be a writer, I suppose it was when I was when I was in college and I took a creative writing class that I first realized how much I enjoyed writing. It wasn't until I did some soul-searching a few years ago however about what I'd really enjoy doing with my life that I decided to give it a whirl.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I believe I was probably four or five years old when I was given a copy of Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It's amazing that I can even remember that!

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I enjoy reading several different genres, but I mostly enjoy Christian Fiction, Sci-Fi, and Tom Clancy-type novels.

What is your favorite book?

In terms of all books, the Bible, hands-down. In terms of fictional literature, I've really enjoyed Tom Clancy's novels, as well as traditional favorites like War of the Worlds, Tale of Two Cities, and others.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

As I mentioned earlier, I really like Clancy, and many others, but I believe I'd have to pick H.G. Wells as my favorite author of fictional literature. Wells was an incredible visionary, and a fantastic storyteller. If you ask me tomorrow, however, I might pick another, there're so many great writers!

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I'd go back to the Garden of Eden to warn Adam and Eve that the fruit was definitely not worth it. I might also want to go back and inform Heron, the ancient Greek geometer and engineer from Alexandria who lived around 2,000 years ago, and built the first steam engine- called an "aeolipile,' how important steam engines would become in the 19th and 20th centuries. It would alter the entire course of history, of course but hey, why limit ourselves?

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

It generally comes rather easy. I think all authors eventually develop a method that works for them. For me, I start with the idea, write the first few chapters, and then work on building a complete outline.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I have four, but only one of them is fuzzy (my teenage son). Seriously, I have no pets at the moment, but I spent a good part of my childhood with dogs.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

I worked for a Steak and Ale restaurant many years ago, and the food back then was absolutely incredible. Steak, French-only soup, a steak, baked potato, etc.-awesome!

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Absolutely. If you love writing, then write, write, and write. The more you write the better you get. There's an enormous amount of people writing books, however, and the competition has never been greater. If you love it, do it, and work as hard as you can to get you work seen and to rise above the noise of so many works coming out every month. You might also want to read books like Writing the Breakout Novel, by Donald Maas, a literary agent out of New York. I'm not sure there's a magic bullet but if you come across one, please let me know what it is! Bonne Chance!

    photo Amazon-UK-Kindle-Icon-150x150.png

Excerpt:

'I… er… overslept and I wanted to get down here early before they…' Brooke tailed off, realising she was telling this boy more than she wanted to, and suddenly feeling self-conscious, she flicked her hair and tilted her head up to meet his eyes. She'd been to enough new schools to know that you couldn't act like a mouse on your first day, unless you wanted to get ignored and dismissed for the entire school year… which might not be a bad plan, she supposed.

The boy pushed himself away from the wall and suddenly stepped towards her, surprisingly close, and too intimate. A shiver ran down Brooke's spine and a heat rose to her cheeks as he stared into her eyes. His eyes were gorgeous, a deep violet blue with an unearthly luminescence, ringed with long, dark, girlish lashes. His hair was a dark blonde and pulled back into a messy ponytail at the nape of his head. He looked at her softly, gently, as if he'd known her his whole life. As she stood frozen to the spot, she watched with wonder as he lifted his right hand to her face, no… her neck. He brushed back her hair and bent his face to her ear.

'Brooke, he hurt you… I can heal you. Let me…'

'W..what? How do you know my name already?'

'You're the only new girl this year, and after last night everyone knows your name, but I can stop them staring. I can help you.'

'How? It'd take a bloody miracle,' she whispered.

'Not quite,' he said, with a quirky smile.

'Hey, boy! Get away from Miss Gardner now, do you hear me?' a male teacher suddenly shouted down the corridor, making the few students in his way turn their heads and stare at the couple.

About The Author:

Emma Mills is a stay-at-home mum, who after a recent move 200 miles south now lives in the beautiful county of Somerset, in the UK. She shares her home with her husband, two children, a dog, 3 cats, a house rabbit and a tankful of fish.

Emma grew up and later went to university to study English in the city of Manchester and for the first decade of her adult life lived in a small town on the edge of the Peak District. It was here, looking after her babies and compulsively reading YA fiction that the ideas for her debut novel, WitchBlood began to take root.

A UK literary agent was secured, however it soon became apparent that she had missed the paranormal popularity boat by about six months, as all the publishers lists were full. With the characters not taking 'no' for an answer Emma decided to join the huge ranks of indie authors out there and go it alone. WitchBlood was published in 2012, swiftly followed by WitchCraft and WitchLove. Emma finished the series and published the finale WitchHunt a week after moving her family south to Somerset, in November 2013. A tie-in novel 'Flying With Fire is scheduled for summer 2014.

Emma is now working on a new and exciting YA project. A three book series unlike her last, where all the characters are human, there are no vampires, no spell casting and no demons rising. A series that will rip your emotions to shreds and leave you breathless.
