Blog Tour: The Black Song Inside By Carlyle Clark

The Black Song Inside
by Carlyle Clark

Author Bio:
Carlyle Clark was raised in Poway, a city just north of San Diego, but is now a proud Chicagolander working in the field of Corporate Security and writing crime fiction and fantasy. He has flailed ineffectually at performing the writers' requisite myriad of random jobs: pizza deliverer, curb address painter, sweatshop laborer, day laborer, night laborer, twilight laborer (of the fang-less variety), security guard, campus police, Gallup pollster, medical courier, vehicle procurer, and signature-for-petitions-getter.
He is a happily married man with two cats and a dog. He is also a martial arts enthusiast and a CrossFit endurer who enjoys fishing, sports, movies, TV series with continuing storylines, and of course, reading. Most inconsequentially, he holds the unrecognized distinction of being one of the few people in the world who have been paid to watch concrete dry in the dark. Tragically, that is a true statement.

Title: The Black Song Inside
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Publisher: Make Luck Press
Release Date: November 14th, 2012

Synopsis:

Shortlisted for the 2012 Faulkner-Wisdom Award

Newly engaged private investigators Atticus Wynn and Rosemary Sanchez have seen the dark and violent side of life. Atticus's dry wit is born of a traumatic childhood that's left him emotionally scarred and estranged from his homicide detective sister. The medals Rosemary earned during her tour of duty in Iraq are little reward for returning home to San Diego missing a leg and tormented by PTSD and her continuing failure to save her younger brother from his own violent nature. Still, nothing they've been through has prepared them for an explosive murder investigation that tests the couple's trust as they struggle to solve a case where the best result leaves them in prison or dead.

Atticus's manipulative and gorgeous ex-girlfriend, Claire, bursts back into their lives wielding a secret about Rosemary's family that she exploits to force the couple into investigating the execution-style slaying of her lover. The case thrusts Atticus and Rosemary headlong into the world of human trafficking and drug smuggling as well as rendering them pawns in Tijuana Cartel captain Armando Villanueva's bloody bid to take over the Cartel. Villanueva Machiavellian scheme sends one of his minions, Rosemary's own gangsta brother, after Atticus, and as if that weren't bad enough, Villanueva dispatches "The Priest", a former child soldier for a Colombian rebel group who is now a messianic mercenary whose religious psychosis has launched him on a trajectory that can only end in mayhem.

The Black Song Inside is a vivid crime thriller rife with the murder and madness, melded with gallows humor and the heroism of two flawed protagonists who, in struggling to unravel a skein of human suffering, learn the nature of redemption and the ability to forgive others and themselves.

Excerpt:

Rosemary suppressed a sigh. As the only child of parents who had wanted a brood, her life had been spent as the wobbly point of an inverted pyramid, forever attempting to balance the burden of hopes and expectations meant to be spread over a half-dozen children. Instead, it was only she and her adopted brother Johnny, the mayhem magnet.
"The leg I have now isn't agile," Rosemary said, rapping it with her knuckles. "With this new one, I can step over things, walk backward, change directions quickly. I'm no longer stuck just going one way and having a change in direction be a major ordeal. I'll be free."
Rosemary maneuvered the X2 case for a better view, marveling at the complexity encompassed in its artistic form. "Come take a look at it."
Mama stayed put, offering a wan smile. "It's very fancy."
Mama sniffed as she levered herself out of the armchair. She pivoted toward the window and pushed the silk drape aside. The waistband of her stretch pants dented her torso. From behind, her hair-sprayed bob seemed smooth and solid, as formidable a protection as the brass dome of a deep-sea diver, the hose stretching from the helmet up to a world of stability, sameness. "So much bad weather this summer."
Rosemary felt the urge to knead her mother's shoulders. "You could change, Mama."
Her mother's neck stiffened. Still looking away, she shook her head. "I happen to like who I am."
Ah, and there it was, the roundabout implication that Rosemary was somehow betraying Mama by being with Atticus-the only thing that had set the pyramid to wobbling as much as her joining the Army Reserves. Hadn't Mama's fears been grimly vindicated when an IED exploded under the Humvee she was driving? Didn't she have an "I told you so" moment when the explosion transformed the man who'd been next to her in the front seat, Specialist First-Class Yukio Morimitu, an always smiling human being with a new bride and a child on the way, into a spatter of blood and bone clumped in her hair, clogging her ears and nose, and filling her mouth with gobbets of flesh.
Rosemary hobble-stepped to the window, leaned against the sill, and put her arm around Mama's shoulders. Lightning flickered in the lining of steel gray clouds. "More rain coming," Rosemary said. "Maybe you better go now."
"I rearranged my day so I can take you to rehab. We could have lunch, relax, then go." She studied Rosemary's face a moment and squinted. "What? You don't want me?"
Rosemary forced her expression to be neutral. "Of course I do, but you said you couldn't go, so I asked Atticus."
"So. You'd rather have him than your own mother."
"Oh for God's sake. I asked you to take me first. You said you were busy."
"So Atticus can't change his schedule?" The sky cast a greenish tinge on Mama's face.
Here we go again, Rosemary thought. Countdown…three…two…one…
"Atticus, Atticus, always Atticus. I'm sick of hearing his name."
"Blastoff."
"What?" Mama blinked.
"Cape Fucking Canaveral." Rosemary shuffled back to her bed.

Review: H10N1 By M.R. Cornelius

H10N1

Title: H10N1

Author: M.R. Cornelius

Published: April 12th 2011

Fromat: Kindle Edition

Pages: 236

BOOK DESCRIPTION

H10N1

A deadly influenza virus rages out of control. There is no easy-fix vaccine. No eleventh-hour containment. Only death. With no workforce, power plants have been shut down, police and fire departments have collapsed, crops lie unpicked in the fields.

When Dr. Taeya Sanchez finds herself unceremoniously dismissed from an emergency medical facility in New York, she decides to steal the hospital's armored van for a midnight escape. Unfortunately, Rick DeAngelo, a driver for the hospital, has already stocked the van for his own getaway.

Thrown into an unfriendly alliance, these two must pick their way across the dangerous wasteland of America in search of a safe haven. And as the miles roll by, they discover that the living should be feared much more than the festering corpses out there.

MY REVIEW

H10N1

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I first purchased a copy of H10N1 from Amazon with my husband's account before having an account of my own. After getting my own account with Amazon I downloaded it from Amazon as a free download.

Dr. Taeya Sanchez works for the CDC and when the flu virus H10N1 started spreading all across the world. The virus is believed to have started in North Korea. Taeya while working for the CDC has been stationed at a New York hospital the only one still in operation. Her job is to sort out the patients that may or may not survive. Taeya goes head to head with her boss because of what he says is best for the patients that Taeya doesn't agree with. When she is dismiss from her duties she knows it is a matter before she is fired. She is no mood to wait for that confrontation much less the consequences. So she decides to pack her bags and as they say "get the hell out of dodge". She has a friend who lives in an experimental bio dome in Arizona. Her friend is a member of a scientific team who all live in the dome trying to stay alive.

Taeya never expects to run into anyone when she makes her escape at midnight but she runs into a guy, Rick DeAngelo who drives a truck for the hospital looking for supplies and whatever else you make need. Rick has been planning his trip for a while now gathering up all the supplies he will need for his trip across country to his friends place in Arkansas who live off the land. Rick and Taeya are not happy at all about their meeting under the circumstances. But Rick can't bring himself to leave her to her own defenses knowing what he does about the people who are in charge at the hospital. He knows they will track her down and bring her back.

Rick and Taeya make their journey across the country not fighting zombies as with most apocalyptic novels but they do have to fight the ones who are still alive. Fighting for their own lives in some cases as well as fighting for their supplies and weapons. Rick and Taeya for the most part are usually bickering back and forth among themselves. They each have their own things in their past that they each have to deal with in their own way. But they each have to lean on the other one to stay alive. In a world where you don't know who you can trust you still have to have someone who will cover your back for you.

I absolutely enjoyed reading H10N1 it is an amazing novel about the apocalyptic. I loved reading that world ended with a virus and not a zombie outbreak. Now don't get me wrong I still love me some zombies but H10N1 was a refreshing breath taker that keeps you turning those pages as fast as possible. I loved the bio dome and all their experiments and that each person had their own job or part that they had to do to help out and earn their way.

While I am pretty sure the world would not end with zombies but is possible. I do believe that the world could end with a flu virus or any type of virus as bio weapon or just as an outbreak weather by accident or not. If the world did end with a virus then I think that there would be looters and thieves whom we would have to defend ourselves from just as M.R. Cornelius has written it in H10N1.

If you have not read H10N1 then I highly suggest that you do that is if you like reading apocalyptic books. Well even if you don't and have been considering it then H10N1 would be a great book to start with. I know M.R. Cornelius has thoroughly did her research on viruses among other things in writing H10N1 and who knows you may just learn something while reading a great book.

Promo Blitz: Monster Night By P.B. Azeltinex And M.E. Drewry

Monster Night

Young Adult Fantasy

By Pb Azeltine, Me Drewry

Date Published: November 2012

When a drug surfaces in town that turns teens into the mythological creature of the chupacabra, David Copperfield Finkleman is called in to help. Why? Because David possesses a rare gift. He is a true blue, magic out of the fingertips, potions and spells, wizard. Well, that and because his grandfather is the  lead investigator on the case and the drug is circulating in David's own high school. David is thrust into a world of danger and monsters he never knew existed, all the while living his normal daily life. He learns that he will have to save the very bullies who torment him in school and the chemistry teacher who wants nothing more than to flunk him. Adding to his problems, he deals with girl troubles, a boss who doesn't appreciate his sarcasm, and saving an agent's life before it's too late...no pressure!

Excerpt

I retrieved my wand, held it over the potion and willed my energy into it. The potion began to bubble as if boiling on the stove. It became thick and turned blood red. The contents bubbled and expanded, spilling out from the bowl and on to the table. Then suddenly the bloody goo began to form into a shape, sprouting legs, and then swirling around and making a body, and lastly a head. I pulled back my energy, but it was too late. A Mastiff-sized chupacabra stood on the table, snarling, snapping, and baring its teeth at me.
I jumped back and cried out at the same time. The creature lunged at me. I dove under the table, feeling the breeze from its body brush my face. The animal thumped to the ground and scrambled, its paws slipping and scratching on the linoleum floor. I clambered to my feet, just in time to throw a wall of energy out, three inches thick and a large doggie-door size wide and high.
The chupacabra hit the wall, bounced back, and came at me, frothing and scrabbling at the energy again and again until he broke through and pounced on me, sending me hurtling backwards. My back, butt, and head smacked the linoleum at the same time, followed by my feet, the chupacabra’s teeth sinking into my coat. Its head thrashed from side to side. The material resisted at first, and then a loud ripping echoed in my ears. The animal won the battle with a mouthful of my stuffing and cotton-polyester blend material. Using my hands and feet and all my strength, I shoved the creature off of me, scrambled to my feet, and sent another stream of magic at it. This time I was able to throw it into the back door. Stunned for a few seconds, it slowly stood, shook its head and body, and showed me his fangs, the whites of them flashing in the bright light of the room.
Was something or someone controlling this creature? Its glazed eyes indicated that the lights might be on in its head, but no one was home, or at least in that house. But who or what was controlling it? And maybe even why?
The creature gathered itself for round two. It rose on its two back legs to full height. Long claws jetted out from its pads ready to slice me in two. Its gray body had a green hint to it with black spots. Black spikes stuck out along the spine and looked as sharp as its claws. Drool dripped from its long tongue and sides of its mouth. It growled, a low menacing hum that rose louder into a snarl.
For a moment, I was fascinated by its ability to balance as a human. Red eyes glowed and I kept from looking at them for fear of not knowing if it could hypnotize or freeze me.

A classic novel, updated for the 21st Century!

MY REVIEW

Witch Hunt

I always like reading books that are about the Salem Witch Trials and witches in general. So when I read the description for Witch Hunt I knew I had to read it. I love how Witch Hunt goes from present to past filling us in on the lives of the Hawthorne family. We get to read about witch trials in 1692 all through the years up until present day. We get to read about the Hawthorne family and all the things that they lived through and all the things that they lost or gained in their lifetimes.

In present day Craig Hawthorne's father and brother was killed in a plane crash. Craig is taking his wife, son and daughter home to his mother's for their funeral. Craig and his family are witches but his wife, Leigh has no knowledge of this. Craig moved away from his family a long time ago.

There was a preacher, an evangelist on the plane with Craig's father and brother. This evangelist, Preacher Cody was so afraid that he was going to die that he didn't even help his wife or daughter try to escape all he was worried about was himself. His wife called for him over and over. She just kept repeating his name but he wouldn't listen to her. Craig's brother and father starting chanting some spell that save Preacher Cody, his wife and their baby's lives. But Preacher Cody saw a way to become famous and put his name in the papers and on tv. So he saw evil in what Craig's brother and father did for him and everyone else on the plane.

Preacher Cody called them witches and had the whole town out helping him to prove that the Hawthornes were witches and that they need to be punished for their evil doings. But the Hawthornes are not evil people they are good and decent human beings and would not cause harm to anyone.

Why do people look at others and judge them just because they are different than them or they don't believe the same way that they do? Why can't they get to know that person to find out what in his their heart? Just because someone doesn't believe in the same things as you do doesn't mean they are cruel and evil people. It defiantly doesn't mean you are going to be mean to them or hurt them.

I really loved reading Witch Hunt as I said before I love reading books about witches. I loved all the characters in the book. But I wasn't too fond of Preacher Cody I mean here he is claiming to be a child of God and look what he does to the Hawthorne family. Isn't a preacher, a child of God supposed to love all creatures? What was he doing? He was playing God judging these people. When he probably had more evil in his heart than they had in their little finger. Look at what he did to his wife and baby on the plane. How he explained that to her I don't even know. How could she stay with him and pretend it didn't happen the way it did? I don't even want to know what went through this man's mind. Because if I did then that would make me just like him and in no way do I ever want to be like that. How can anyone claim to be a child of God and want to hurt people like that? I just don't get it.

Enough of me ranting and raving. If you like reading and learning about the Salem Witch Trials then you would love Witch Hunt. It is well worth the price you would spend on it. And I honestly don't think you would regret it. So why don't you go on over to Amazon and get your own copy and start reading it today. Publisher: Satin Smoke Press
Ebook

BOOK DESCRIPTION
Cry Of The Wolf

The full moon is a week away, and although Lydia is as excited as it gets to run as a wolf for the first time, she is also fighting to keep her independence while trying to understand her role in the lives of the three males that have come to rule hers: compassionate, tender Taylor; impetuous, fun-loving Ryan and distant, cold Lawrence.
There's also a fourth man in Lydia's life. Brendan, her previous "friend with benefits", is tirelessly searching for her. He's about to uncover things that should be kept hidden.
However, the testosterone surrounding her is the last thing she should be worrying about. Her family bear truths about her heritage she's not ready to face ... she may not have a choice, because the greatest danger to them all comes from within. The past never stays buried for long, and among the shadows of their species it is rising with a vengeance, threatening to tear their pack apart for good.
Notes: Book two of a series - it is highly recommended that book one be read first. This is an adult, paranormal fantasy short novel (over 55,000 words) containing scenes of explicit sexual content and some violence, entwined with romantic elements. (Written in British English.)

GUEST VIDEO

MY REVIEW
Cry Of The Wolf

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.
Lydia is trying to figure out her relationship with the three males, her mates in her life now. How to deal with each of her of them and what they each mean to her. This is not to even mention the guy Brendan she was seeing on occasion before her wolf came out. Brendan is treading in dangerous waters by not letting her go or forgetting about her but he doesn't know this nor does Lydia. Brendan may not be the only one in danger either. Lydia having mated with three of the pacts males could stir up some bad trouble between herself and some of the other members of the pact.
Ryan is the male wolf that Lydia has been in love for years but only in her dreams. Lydia had dreamed about Ryan and their love making for years she didn't know that he was real. Ryan is a very sweet and hot dude. He along with her other two mates all do very good with sharing Lydia while at the same time they do find it hard to share their "woman".
Taylor is still in love with his wife Sarah and is having a hard time letting her go. He knows he has to let her go but he is not sure that it will ever be possible. He knows he should be thinking about Lydia now and Sarah but he was in love with Sarah for so long. Lydia understands this if the men don't exactly get it.
Lawrence is a tough dude with an attitude at times. One minute he can be so sweet and the next not so sweet. Lawrence has a past that he has tried so hard to keep in the past. But his past is about to catch up with him. His past is about to be brought into his future and may end up causing him a lot of trouble and pain.
Dianna you have done it again, written an out of this world novel. Dianna's writing just keeps getting better and better not to mention her story telling. Cry Of The Wolf is the bomb and this one will keep you bouncing and not able to turn the pages fast enough wanting to know who Lydia is going to be with next. The ending of Cry Of The Wolf just blew me right out of the water. It was a great surprise that I did not see coming. When you find a book with an ending like this one then you know you have just finished a fantastic book. You are hooked straight away oh not that I wasn't hooked from book #1 in the series.
Book #1 Releasing The Wolf was a great book too all by itself. If you have not read this series yet then I highly recommend that you do. But as Dianna says you need to start with the Book #1 first so you will know what is going on. I can't wait for the third book in the Series Heart Of The Wolf which is due to be published December 2013.
Thanks Dianna for letting me read your novels and thanks as always for taking the time out of your busy schedule and visiting with us today! Thank you for making the Guest Video, love it!
Purchace Releasing The Wolf so that you can have it read by the release date of Cry Of The Wolf on April 18, 2013.
